The First Impulse
Chapter 1: Misunderstandings

“I didn’t do it…” She whispered between chapped, bloody lips. Her wrists were swollen and raw from rubbing against the freezing cold chains that bound her. Her voice was barely audible from the screams that the uncaring Taiyoukai tore from her throat.

The poison he had released in her system was slowly draining her strength, and soon, should nothing be done, she would be dead.

“I don’t believe you, miko! Her scent was all over you…” he growled to her, his face holding nothing but anger as his eyes narrowed into thin red slits.

“I would never harm a child…” she whispered again, her eyes closed from being swollen, and her body hanging limp from both the beating, and physical abuse she had endured for a week now. Her stomach pains were the least of her aches, as the rest of her body screamed in protest at the trials it was experiencing. She was dying, and there was nothing she could do to stop it.

A slightly squeaky voice interrupted anything else that would have been said. “Milord…Madam Tsubaraki is here, as requested.”

Turning quickly to his toad servant, the taiyoukai nodded firmly. “Bring her in. The truth will be brought forth from this insolent wench.” He growled. Normally, he would have just killed his brother’s bitch, but if it was true that she didn’t kill his ward, then it was up to him to find out who did, and to take their life in exchange for the one they had taken. He had not taken any time to grieve, and he wouldn’t, until she was avenged.

A short woman with dark eyes and brilliant white hair entered the dungeon, her face empty and blank with no emotion. She could tell the girl who was chained had holy power, but other than that, the girl seemed weak, as any normal human girl. Tilting her lifeless eyes to the Taiyoukai, she asked in a monotone voice, “What is it you wish to know, Milord?”

“She continues to defy me.” He almost snarled at the woman. “She denies killing my ward, however, she was found near her dead body, covered in her scent.”

The woman nodded solemnly. Should he kill the wrong culprit, then there would be no true revenge, and his honor would suffer, something the Taiyoukai would never adhere to. Stepping closer to the girl, she began to glow a light blue, locking her eyes on the girl’s sapphire ones.

Kagome’s holy powers weakly tried to fight off the woman’s strange youkai power, but in her current state, nothing could be done as the woman quickly breezed past her mental barriers, and pulled her memories forth.

The Taiyoukai lord watched semi-patiently as the girl’s memories were projected above her head in a faint smoky cloud, showing what had transpired within the past few days, with his onslaught of abuse, and then before that, watching her friends being slaughtered.

Kagome screamed silently, her face contorted in pain. She had relived those few moments of time enough over the past days to last her a lifetime, and here she was being forced to relive them again…

“Oye, wench! Hurry up! You’re the one who said you sensed a jewel shard, so hurry it up already!” Inuyasha yelled, looking back to his female companion and the rest of their small group.

“Inuyasha…” she said, her tone holding an unspoken warning. The girl was of average height, with sparkling sapphire eyes and raven dark hair. For the time period, her clothes were indecent to say the least, her lime green school uniform skirt barely long enough to cover her thighs, while her white top did a better job of covering her from waist up.

He swallowed any retort that he was close to saying, instead he diverted his attention back to the front. He was also of average height, but taller than the girl, with long silver hair, and dark yellow eyes. He was also half demon, as shown by the cute pair of dog ears atop his head. The fire red rat kimono he wore contrasted sharply with his silver hair, giving him an even more ethereal appearance.

Alongside Kagome, were three of her very best friends; Sango, a demon slayer, wore an all black outfit, and she had a large boomerang made of demon bone strapped to her back. She also had long dark hair and brown eyes. Miroku, a monk, wore purple robes that trailed down to cover his feet, and had his dark hair pulled back. In his hand he held a staff, and on his left hand was a set of sky blue beads, holy beads that closed off his deadly curse, the wind tunnel. And finally, there was a small kitsune child by the name of Shippou, who was currently holding onto Kagome’s hair as he sat on her shoulders. The kit had on green pants with a leaf design upon them, and wore a brown vest. His green eyes were quite mischievous, but at the moment, he could be seen with a smile on his face.

Kirara, a fire cat, was also trailing behind the group, sniffing the air lightly for danger. A happy squeal got their attention, as a young girl ran up to launch herself at Kagome’s leg. “Kagome chan!”

Smiling softly, the miko hugged the small girl back, patting her head. “Hello Rin, how are you?” she replied softly, taking a few seconds to look around for Sesshoumaru.

“Rin is fine! Sesshoumaru sama went to hunt and told Rin to stay and play with Jaken, but Jaken went away too! Can Rin stay and play with you?” she asked, in a span of about five seconds.

She laughed softly and nodded, before the young girl turned to Shippou. Instantly, a game of tag was formed and she looked to Inuyasha. “What do you say, how about we have some lunch?” she asked, ignoring his soft scowl and “feh”.

“I’ll take that as a ‘yes’.” With that, she pulled stuff out of her bag to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with chips. Sango got water from a local stream to drink, and Miroku found a nearby rock to meditate on, while Inuyasha found the tallest local tree to settle down into. The peace that had enveloped their small choice of clearing did not last long, as a gentle mist started to float over their area. Before anyone who was on the ground could understand what had happened, they started to fall, one by one, as the mist did what it was supposed to do, and that was to put the group to sleep.

Kagome wasn’t sure if it had been seconds, minutes, or even hours, but when she opened her eyes, she found that Naraku was standing before her, his dark, glittering eyes filled with malice, hate, and something that Kagome could only identify as great satisfaction. Those eyes paused as they turned in her direction. She couldn’t even scream as she felt a fierce wind surround her, and in that wind, the entirety of her oxygen supply started to wane. Opening her mouth to shout at the others, she could only rasp her protests as she tried to tap into her miko powers to dispel the demon wind around her, to try and free herself so she could protect her friends.

She knew what was coming next, and she was powerless to stop it.

Naraku only smirked in her direction as he lifted the strongest of the group first, Inuyasha. He was planted down in the ground as he had fallen from his place in his chosen tree. He held the hanyou around the throat and his eyes glittered maliciously as he turned to stare straight into her frightened, sapphire eyes. In just a moment, blood joined the vortex of wind, and splattered on her white and green uniform. Inuyasha’s blood. Her hoarse scream wasn’t heard, as he continued his destructive rampage on her friends. Miroku was next, and his blood too, joined Inuyasha’s. Her head was pounding with the lack of oxygen to it, and her screams had only made everything worse. She mentally willed herself to wake up from this hellish nightmare, but nothing was happening. She couldn’t seem to close her eyes and tear them away from the gory scene before her. Each one of her comrades went in the same manner, traumatizing the miko further as their blood soaked her uniform. What was once a pure white, was now brick red, as the blood flowed down her body.

She struggled to tear her top away from her body, not wanting to wear her clothes anymore, but they wouldn’t budge under her meager strength. A small noise got her attention as she tore her head back to the demon before her, and with horror, she saw him hold Rin in one outstretched tentacle, and Shippou in the other. Her scream was lost in the vortex of wind as she finally passed out, her body crumpling beneath her onto the cold, drenched, forest floor.

When she awoke, her upper body was straining to hold itself up as she noticed she was chained down, and she became aware that she was in a dark place, and her clothing hadn’t been changed. With one, blood curdling scream, the images of what befell her friends came back to her before she passed out once more.

Sesshoumaru hadn’t let her sleep for long though, as he tore her out of her dark sleep with one well-aimed golden tendril to her body, slicing a large gash into skin. Blood flowed like a river from the wound, and her scream nearly deafened him, but that was the least of his worries or concerns right now. Right now, all he wanted to do, was kill her for killing his beloved ward.

~*~

Sesshoumaru had come upon the clearing and was appalled at the sight before him. The small group of Shikon searching travelers were around him, all of them decapitated. What brought him to this area however, wasn’t their scent, but his wards. The scent of death and blood around him nearly choked him, but he forced down the urge to vomit in favor of finding out just where in this carnage was his ward. He prayed to all the gods he could think of that she was just a wandering passerby, and that she wasn’t immediately involved in this mess around him. He couldn’t quiet pull her scent from the rest of them, but he didn’t have to, as his eyes fell on her body, and then, her head, which was lying close to the kitsune kit’s that traveled with his half-brother.

The roar that filled the forest was filled with pain unimaginable, and sorrow. He was almost unaware of anything else, until he noticed that there was one being that was alive, and he nearly snarled. The miko. She had most likely brought his ward to stay with them, and in the process, brought her into danger. His anger could not be quelled by any god or numbers of gods. Taking her body, he raced for his home, and threw her into the dungeon. With that done, he left and made preparations for the funerals that were to come. Finally, after two days, he returned to find the miko still unconscious. He quickly rectified that, as he sliced her flesh open. He relished in her screams and cries, and took all of his aggression and sorrow out on her human body. She would pay for bringing his ward into danger, and for not protecting her. However, something nagged at the back of his mind. She had protested at first, but the longer that time passed, her protesting seemed to wane. He had to know the truth, and he didn’t want to bother with her trying to explain it to him. He would see for his own eyes what she had gone through, and what had happened to her companions. He didn’t forget that her clothes were littered with her companions, and his wards, blood. She was uninjured. There had to be some reason. Either she killed them all, or something drastically different had happened. That was when he entrusted in the help of Tsubaraki.

~*~

And now, as he saw the images flash above Kagome’s head, he felt his demon heart drop into his stomach, somewhere where it wasn’t going to come back up anytime soon. Rin had found them, because Jaken had not been watching her carefully, and she was caring for her. None of her friends could have anticipated the surprise attack from Naraku, and the way he did it, was nothing less than cowardly and low. He couldn’t help but feel his stomach lurch at the scene that Kagome had been forced to watch and endure. He could see that she was immobilized by demonic winds that could only belong to one demon he knew. He watched, as she did once more, the falling of each of her friends, watched as their blood began to coat her clothing and in her hair, watched, as she fell into darkness only to reawake in a dark, and familiar place, only to relive her memories and pass out. Then, he watched, finally, as she awoke to the piercing pain of his whip, and his poison, and even more so, his voice of accusations and anger.

He had been gravely mistaken, and he wasn’t sure how to deal with it.

Tsubaraki spared one glance at her lord and frowned. Something was seriously wrong here. Apparently what they were watching wasn’t what her lord expected to see, and his slightly ashen face had her worried. Word had spread across all the lands that the Lord’s ward was killed in a most vicious manner, and that almost all of the shard-hunters of Inuyasha’s pack had been killed as well. One could only naturally assume that Naraku had some involvement, but it seemed like her Lord had taken out all of his aggression on the small, petite human before them. The female girl was thin and bleeding, and her arms were shackled to the wall as she hung limply from her wrists, which looked to be immeasurably bruised and possibly even broken. She had fought, and struggled, but it seemed like her Lord had not shown any mercy to the human girl. She pitied her, but if her assumption was right, the girl would die soon, within hours even. She had not missed the marks on the girls neck where her Lord’s poison was injected. She didn’t envy her any, but it couldn’t be helped. If she were involved with the slaying of her Lord’s ward, then she had earned every bit of pain that had been inflicted on her. However, by the look that was on her Lord’s face, perhaps the girl wasn’t involved at all.

As if just realizing what he was doing, Sesshoumaru looked up quickly to Kagome’s limp hanging form and he strode forward before he slashed open the chains that held her up, and as soon as the bonds broke, she fell heavily to the floor, no where near strong enough to hold herself up in any position. Kagome was tired, and confused. One minute her mind was being split open to pull out her memories, and the next, she was in a heap on the floor, the cold of the stone beneath her seeming to be warmer than the air around her. The heat radiating from her fevered body seemed to soak up the cold in a loving manner as she breathed in harshly, her chest moving with much difficulty as it pulled oxygen into her lungs and expelled the carbon dioxide her body made. She knew that a couple of her ribs were broken, but it was a minor inconvenience considering she was feeling just a tiny bit of relief because of the cold stone now on her skin.

Before she knew it, she was being lifted up into a soft, but hard body, and she opened her mouth in a silent scream of pain as her voice had left her long ago. The pain was enough to send her once more into the world of darkness.

Sesshoumaru nearly growled at himself in anger as he saw her body crumble to the floor. She had taken all that he had dished out, and she had not died. For that he didn’t know if he should praise her, or scold her, but either way, he was rather glad to not have this particular girl’s death on his conscience, considering all that he had found out in the past half-hour. Kneeling down beside the girl, he picked her up with his arm and tail, before he shot glares at the guards at her door. “Get the healer now. Tell him to bring wraps, antiseptics, and antidotes. Tell him to meet me in the Lady’s bedchambers.” As soon as his order had been given, both guards were racing down the hallway of the stone prison to get the healer, and Sesshoumaru looked with glowing eyes to Tsubaraki. “I trust you can see yourself out by now. This, Sesshoumaru has other matters to attend to.”

With those parting words, he moved out of the dark cell before he raced for the Lady’s bedchambers, that were connected to his own, and mentally berated himself for all he had done in the past week to the girl before him. She had not been involved at all with the harming of his ward, and he had taken all of his anger and pain out on her fragile, ningen body. He was afraid that she would die. He had not been gentle at all with her. He had smacked her, punched her, kicked her, attacked her with his most deadly poisons, his energy whips, and even with his claws. He wondered if the gods were protecting her for some reason, but he couldn’t even ascertain as to why that would be. With gentleness, he reached the Lady’s room and moved inside, before shouting to the handmaids laying in wait, “Draw water and boil it. Bring clean cloths and when the healer arrives, see him in here.”

His order was quickly obeyed, and he moved her over to a large desk before him, thinking that this would be the best place to put her, lest the blood soaked in her clothes and dripping from her get on the bedsheets and covers. Quickly, he raked his claws through what remained of her shirt, and was surprised when he found another clothe of some sort binding her breasts together. The clothe looked to have been blue but with the extent of blood that was on her clothing, it was now a dark purple color, as the two colors mixed. He quickly removed her of that article as well, before he let his claws rake through her skirt and her underwear, leaving her bare to his thorough inspection. He would have found himself enjoying the view she provided, but with the blood caking her form, it was difficult to see her flesh. It didn’t look like an inch of her went without having droplets of dried blood, both her own, and her companions, on her body, and he growled internally to himself. One of the maids came up behind him and set a steaming bowl of water upon the edge of a nearby table, before she bowed and held out a stack of clothe to him. He didn’t spare her a second glance before he dipped one of the cloths into the water and slowly proceeded to wash away some of the blood on her face first, and then moved down to her breasts. His willpower and her condition were the only things keeping him from doing anything more than this right now. The fact that he was uncovering wounds that he had made, and some that he knew he hadn’t, just proved how much the girl before him had endured. Scars that were both fresh and some that were not, had his beast demanding retribution. The guilt that he felt was deep, and unknown to him. He never felt guilty over anything he said or did, however, now, he was angry with himself over what he had done. He had acted rashly, and on impulse, something that was very out of character for him. He had to wonder if something else was in that clearing when he came upon the miko and her fallen comrades.

He couldn’t be sure, and he wasn’t going to leave her side to find out just yet. She had been put in this state mostly by his hand, so he was going to do all he possibly could to save her. This would be his apology to her. In a couple of minutes time, the water that had been brought to him was a brilliant red, tinged with the blood from her body. He ordered the maid to take it away and bring back more, and in that time, the healer finally came to his side. “Milord. You have called for me?” he asked, his eyes slightly wide at the condition of the girl before him. Apparently, his Lord had taken another human under his wing, but for her to be in such a condition to begin with had him wondering if his Lord was setting himself up for heartache. The girl looked like she wouldn’t survive the next hour, let alone any length of time at all, and he expected to be able to save her life?

“She needs attention. Give her the antidote first. She had been injected with a moderate amount of poison and will need to have it neutralized to start out with. Then check for other wounds on her person. Also, check for broken bones. Splint the bones, and wrap the wounds that are bleeding. See if you can get her fever to come down.” He ordered quietly, not telling the good healer just who put that poison in her body, or who broke her bones. The healer nodded in understanding before he watched Sesshoumaru leave the room and the girl’s side. He seemed agitated, far more than normal. Shaking his head of the lingering thought, he looked to the battered and nearly broken human girl before him and sighed. Only his Lord would bring a human in her condition to him and expect miracles.

Quickly though, he followed his Lord’s orders, and was surprised to find that she was still alive, but only barely. His final assessment had been difficult to ascertain, but he did not stop checking her bones until he found every broken one. Her left wrist had been broken, and her right one badly strained. Three of her ribs had been cracked and the poison that had been in her body had been very deadly indeed, and he was almost afraid that the antidote wouldn’t even work, this late in the game. Her right leg had been broken in two places, and her skull had been fractured. Beyond her internal injuries, there were the outer injuries to speak of. Numerous lacerations blanketed her skin, and beyond that, burns that looked like they came from either the sun, or wind. Her face was a mess of bruises, lumps, and swelling as he tried to clean up the remaining blood as best he could. After a couple of hours of frantic work, he found that his patient was stirring.

Kagome’s eyes briefly fluttered, but upon sensing light, she kept them closed. She wasn’t in the darkness anymore. She briefly had to wonder if she were dead. Shaking her head of those thoughts, she tilted her head towards a voice. The voice was soft and soothing, and she found herself straining to understand what he was saying. “…stay still, young one. You have been hurt very badly. I will make you some medicine that will help with the pain, and ease you back into sleep. Relax, and don’t be scared. No one will hurt you here.” It said, and Kagome had no option left but to believe it, as she felt bandages sticking to her skin. Her mind once more pulled back images of darkness, pain, and death, but she didn’t want to think about that right now. She felt a small cup at the bottom of her swollen lips, and she opened her mouth slightly at his prompting to feel something liquid and bitter flow down her throat. She would have coughed if she would have had the energy, but she swallowed it without incident as she felt another cup come up to her lips and slowly, she felt water run down over her cracked lips and dry tongue. The cool liquid felt heavenly on her swollen and sore throat, and she eagerly swallowed it, before another cup was put to her lips. She drank that one as well, before she felt her head being set back down upon a hard surface. Not trusting herself to speak, she just let the medicine given to her do what it was supposed to do, and let herself drift back into the land of dreams, not really in a position to care about where she was, or who was taking care of her.

~*~

Night came to the Taiyoukai’s castle, and he had returned from his trip to the forest of his ward’s downfall. He had sensed darkness and malicious intent floating all over the area, and he had almost smacked himself for not noticing it sooner. Naraku’s signature was all over this place, and he had barely registered it. All he noticed was that there was a survivor, and that survivor wasn’t his beloved ward. Pushing away his uneasy thoughts, he moved towards his chambers, and inadvertently, the miko’s. He moved to the door before opening it quietly. The healer was nearby, as well as a couple of the maids in waiting. He nodded to each of them before he moved in further into the room, and the light of many lamps illuminated his pristine figure, and the small figure of Kagome on the bed. He moved over to her side, before he took a seat and his healer came up to him to give him his report on all of her injuries. At each new one explained to him, he internally winced, before the healer fell silent, and allowed him time to reflect on the female before him. She seemed to be deep in sleep, and undisturbed, for which he was glad. He saw many bandages over the parts of her that were exposed, and even splints on both her wrist, and one of her legs, which was propped up on a number of pillows.

He had no idea what to do or say in this situation, but he felt that perhaps nothing was best. Before he knew it though, his hand had moved from his side to slip into one of hers. Her hands were so much smaller than his, and far more fragile. If he wished it, he could rip her entire arm from her body without so much as a flick of his wrist. He once more wondered how the human species survived, them being so weak. However, that thought left to leave him with the one that had been plaguing him all day: how had she survived? Letting out a soft breath, he almost took his hand away, before he felt her smaller one squeeze his gently. He quickly looked to her face to see if she were awake, but she was not, as she still kept breathing softly, however, it was unmistakable that her hand had moved of it’s own accord, and it apparently didn’t mind his presence.

The healer watched on with barely concealed interest as his Lord showed something akin to worry about the young girl before him, but if he was going to say anything, he bit it down. He had wondered if Sesshoumaru would ever learn to care for another creature other than himself, and had been surprised the day he brought Rin to the castle, but beyond that, he wondered if the Lord would ever find someone that he could mate to and create successors to the Taishou throne. He pushed those thoughts away as well, and just watched the seen carefully. Who was this girl and what had she done to his Lord?

~*~

Kagome was surrounded by darkness, but the darkness was welcome considering what her alternative was. She closed her mind to the dark and disturbing images that haunted her mind in favor of this welcome darkness that seemed to put her at ease, more than it scared her. She was unaware of much, except for the occasional twinge of pain from various locations in her body, and that was fine with her. If she had nothing to bother her, she could sleep in peace. Once more, she thought that she really, might have died, and she wondered if she were traveling between the realm of the living and the dead. Somewhere in the back of her mind, she registered that someone was holding her hand. The hand was clawed, that was easy to see, but it was gentle, and the owner of the hand had very soft, and smooth skin. She couldn’t help but close her own hand around it, as if this person’s gentle touch was rooting her to whatever realm she was in. She still wasn’t sure if she were alive or dead, but this person, be it a spirit or another living creature, would keep her in one place or the other. Letting this one thought calm her unsure mind, she once more submitted to the darkness around her.
