"I Knew I Loved You"

//Maybe it's intuition
But some things you just don't question
Like in your eyes
I see my future in an instant
and there it goes//

I watch you lovingly as you sleep, your chest rises and falls rhythmically, and my own heart soars when I think how lucky I am to have you here with me. Your eyes slowly open as the sun hits you from the crack in-between the trees and I smile at you as you shade your eyes from its warm rays. You look up at me and smile groggily back, your free hand reaching up and touching my cheek softly. The look you give me is enough to know that my future is secure and there is no one else in this world that I would rather be with.

Without you I would be but a mere shadow of myself.

I know that it might sound more than
a little crazy but I believe//

And to think we started off on shaky ground. Fighting and arguing were second nature to us then, and we still have our moments, but they are quelled by an understanding and silent love that is irrevocable. Best friends and soul companions; that's something I never thought we would ever be. Something I never believed I could accept of myself.

It's always seemed a little crazy for my head to get a grip on, but now I believe.

I have been waiting all my life//

Is it wrong to say I have loved you somewhere in another time long before we met? That in our dreams I called out to you, reached out across time and brought us here together in this time by the bonds of love?

Waiting for you to find me as you did and release me from my restraints, waiting all of my life just to have you near. Waiting to love you like I do.

I still have problems trying to understand it myself.

I feel satisfied with you by my side, something I have never felt in my whole life, always searching for that elusive power, trying to be someone else, hiding from my weaker side; a side that I was so ashamed of. If it wasn't for you believing in me, believing in all that I could become, I know that I would have never felt the happiness that I am feeling now.

I lean over and look into your eyes and the missing pieces of my life seem to fall gracefully into place.

Home... Home was a word I used to hear too frequently for my liking. I guess I was always jealous that you had that and I never really had. And the heart, so l heard, would always lead you home. So many times I wondered what that meant and could never understand the true meaning. How could one such as I, have ever known the love of a home and a family when I was never accepted by any of my peers growing up? Only my mother, that I can remember, showed me affection of any kind when I was a small child and life was cruel once she left this earth.

But you, you have given me a home and a new life here with you.

I have been waiting all my life//

So much has happened since our first meeting and I have no doubt that there is much more ahead of us, and at least until this mission is finished I can have you here by my side, although I have to admit, I don't want to wake up from this if it is really a dream. I don't think I could bear for you to leave my side, not after everything we have been through.

My only wish is for you to stay with me forever. Selfish, I know; then again, you always say I am, but I think this kind of selfish is a little different. I want to lay by your side like this more often and dream with you some more. I think it's worth the trouble of an argument here and there. After all, I have waited this long for our love to be acknowledged within our own hearts, so I'm sure it won't hurt to wait a little while longer before we have the courage to admit it verbally and honestly to each other without trying to hide it...

Badly, I might add.

I am complete now that I found you//

You yawn and sit upright, brushing the fallen leaves from your shirt. The sunlight hits your face and I find my cheeks are burning. It seems that whatever gods are watching over us have sent their minions to protect you.

But there is no need to have their angels dancing around you.

I will protect you. Protect the one I love.

I look away, a little embarrassed as you give me a curious stare.

"Inu Yasha?"

I want to say it, but I can't. It's just too difficult a thing for me to say just yet. "You've slept too long again. We need to hurry up and get those shards."

I hear you sigh disappointedly and I wish I could say those words you want so badly to hear me say. My heart seems to wrench and I turn to face you with all the courage I can bear and wrap my arms tightly around you. "I promised you I would always protect you, Kagome, and I meant it, even if it means my life. Is that enough for now?"

I have been waiting all my life//

I feel your head pressing softly into my shoulder as you return the embrace. You say nothing, but I know that you, like I, understand that waiting a little longer to fulfill our silent dream of being together as one is nothing more than a moment in the eternal flow of time.

But here with you now I am complete...

Life may be fleeting.

But love is eternal.

And I will always love you.
