Running

Prologue

The night was dark. Very dark. The wind was whipping around her, slapping her wet
hair against her face. The icy cold rain was stinging her skin, freezing it. Still... she wouldn't, in
fact couldn't, look away from the horror unfolding before her.
The night was so complete, so utterly black, she shouldn't have been able to see
anything at all. But even without the constant flashing of the lightning, she could see him. And even with the crashing of the thunder she could hear him; hear them. Even with the storm raging all around her, inside of her, she couldn't think to move inside, to seek shelter from the bitter cold. She felt nothing of the storm but her own anger, her own rage, and also her own impotence. She had lost. She knew she had lost. Lost to that undead bitch. Lost him to that undead, worm-eaten, maggot-infested whore.
She should have went in search of warmth and shelter. Instead, she left to the night. She didn't want to see them anymore, she didn't want to hear them anymore. So she closed her eyes and covered her ears, and she ran. But to no avail. There was no escaping it. She could still hear the hanyou she had loved, had thought loved her in return. And she could still hear the voice of the woman who took him from her.
'I love you Inuyasha. Do you love me?' The bitch had asked in between the half-demon's kisses.
'Of course I do, Kikyo! Have you ever doubted me?' Came the reply.
Kikyo smirked and said, 'I need a favor dear lover.'
'Anything. Anything you want, it's yours.' Said Inuyasha. He was slowly lowering Kikyo down to the ground beneath the huge old tree she had pinned him to more than fifty years ago. They were relatively dry underneath it. It's large branches and thick foliage providing more than adequate shelter.
'I want my reincarnation gone. You no longer need that child, my love. The jewel has been completed, Naraku is dead, and now you can become a youkai like you've always wanted. She needs to go.' Kikyo had said with such a sickly sweet look on her face Kagome had felt the bile rising in her throat.
'What do you suggest, my dear?' Inuyasha had asked while trying to move his wench to a more compatible position.
'I want her dead, lover. So she can never come between us again. So she can never steal your love from me again.'
'She never had my love, Kikyo. Never.' The hanyou paused, 'Are you sure this is the only way you could trust me? Trust in us?'
'Inuyasha, I know you only used her for her ability to sense the shards, so what use do you have for the child now? Certainly you don't have... feelings for her! Do you?'
'No, my love. I couldn't care about her either way. What you wish will be done.' He had smiled slowly, spreading her legs and sinking deep inside of her. 'But I do believe it can wait until the morning.' He smirked as his woman screamed beneath him, moving against him and tearing at the rest of his clothes.
In the shadows, Kagome felt her heart drop into her stomache, could feel the acidic liquid eating away at it. She could believe she never had his love, could even except it, but she had no idea he hated her, let alone despised her enough to kill her!
So she ran. Ran away from the tree where she had first laid eyes upon him. Ran away from the tree in whose bows the co-conspirators of her death were now engaged in the ultimate act of love. And the thought of her death was fueling their passion
