Kagome hopped out of the well and dropped her bag. She stretched her arms over head and took a deep breath. “Ahhh, nothing like the smell of InuYasha’s forest,” she thought. She could appreciate why InuYasha hated going to her time. The stench of the future was disturbing compared to the simplicity of this time. Grabbing her bag, Kagome started down the path to Kaede’s village. She wondered if InuYasha was waiting for her there.

Kagome knew that she was early. The others didn’t expect her back until tomorrow morning, but she couldn’t wait. She had finished her exams, packed her bag and thought, “Why not go? Its not like InuYasha won’t be happy. He doesn’t like it when I’m gone anyway.”

She slowed and shuddered, ”Besides, Naraku has almost all the jewel shards. We need to get to the remaining ones before he does. Of course he’ll have to come to us to complete the Shikon no Tama.”

Pausing in the gathering twilight, Kagome stood letting the evening breeze wash over her, soothing away the frightening thought of meeting Naraku in the final battle. “InuYasha will think I’m being silly.” she said out loud and started walking again smiling. The half demon was unlike anyone she had ever met. She thought about how he looked when they were on the trail of one the shards, the passion in his eyes and the sureness of his steps. “Kami, if he looked at me like that I’d melt” she thought blushing. He was so sure and strong and gentle and maddening and intoxicating. It was driving her crazy. And he didn’t even know. Of course he might know. Its not like she was very subtle, although she’d die of embarrassment before she admitted that.

Musing over her growing feelings for the hanyou, Kagome didn’t realize how gloomy the forest was becoming now. She cursed under her breath at her impulsive decision to return to the feudal era early. “Not early enough to get to Kaede’s hut before dark,” she muttered, ducking her head under a low branch and trudging on. “Where is InuYasha now, when I need him to carry all this ramen I’ve brought back for him?”

The girl was walking through the woods still muttering, when she entered a small clearing in the trees. Looking up Kagome stopped abruptly, she gasped in horror at the carnage in front of her. A mutilated body swung from a rope tied to a tree branch and splashes of dark blood were sprayed all over the ground. The man’s face was missing and a limb looked as if it had been hacked off with a blunt sword. “What a terrible way to die.” Kagome thought and put a hand over her mouth to hold in her supper.

It was difficult to see clearly in the deepening shadows, but over to her right, something seemed to be moving. Kagome froze and waited to see if it really was something or if her eyes were playing tricks on her. A low growl came from the blackness and a large shape stepped into the clearing.

Kagome stifled a scream and turned to flee back along the path to the well, but she tripped on a root and almost fell. Her backpack was flung into the bushes but Kagome was too terrified to look for it. She scrambled frantically to regain her balance as she pulled her foot out of its trap and ran. Kagome could hear the sounds of something crashing after her. Whatever it was was getting closer to her. She ran blindly through the woods trying to get away.

“InuYasha!” Kagome screamed in fright. “If only he can hear me,” she thought desperately.

Kagome ran for hours, stumbling and falling over and over again, but always picking herself up and moving forward, until her lungs burned and her legs gave out. She couldn’t go on. She fell onto her knees and sucked in air greedily. The forest around her was quiet and still. She couldn’t hear anything above the sounds of her harsh breathing, but it seemed whatever was following her was gone. She didn’t know where she was and night had truly fallen now. Thanks to millions of shining stars, Kagome could see well enough. As she calmed she looked around her and saw a small hut nestled at the edge of the tree line. It was then she realized she wasn’t in InuYasha’s forest anymore. There was a stream a few feet away from her and after a few moments she slowly got to her feet and shuffled to the bank. She sank down next to it and cupped the cool water over her heated face. Sighing softly Kagome sank back on her heels trying decide what to do.

“Should I try to get back to the well or the village? I don’t think I could walk very far. I’m so tired. Maybe I should stay here and wait for InuYasha to find me.” she wrapped her arms around herself and shivered, wishing for the sweater in her pack. It was a lovely summer night but the earlier scene in the clearing and the chase had left her feeling cold, very cold. “If only InuYasha were here,” she whispered.

She glanced at the hut on the other side of stream and tried to sense if there was any danger. She couldn’t feel anything. Not wanting to be out in the open any longer, Kagome pushed herself up and looked for a way to cross the water. Her legs shook violently and her breath hitched on a sob as she spied a wooden plank stretched across the stream. She just wanted to be inside the hut now and wasn’t paying much attention as she stepped onto the little bridge. No sound warned her of danger and her cry echoed in the trees as the rotting wood crumbled and broke beneath her feet.

Kagome stood shin deep in the fast running water. It was cold. She was cold. And now she was wet too. She sloshed out of the stream and stood on the bank, shaking her legs and trying to get the water out of her shoes without actually taking them off. Kagome sighed and gave up. At least her feet were too numb to hurt anymore, she thought. She turned to the hut and started toward it, determined to ignore the squishing, slurping sounds her shoes were making.

When she got to the door Kagome closed her eyes in disbelief. “As if this situation can get any worse!” she whined. “Geez, this isn’t a hut, it’s a shack. And its falling apart!” Kagome gingerly pushed the door open and stepped inside.
