Chapter One

“I’m going exploring. Bye,” yelled Rin as she shut the door. She heard a muffled, “Alright Bye!”

She walked down the porch stairs and stopped at the start of the sidewalk. It was the afternoon and the weather was nice enough that she only need her blue jacket to keep warm. Which way? Rin thought. Her mother and she just moved here Friday. She was in-rolled in high school that same day, and would start Monday. Now, it was Saturday and she’s going to find a job.

The reason why her mother wanted to move was not to get out that small ass apartment they were living in, but to be closer to her boyfriend. Her boyfriend had happened to pass through the diner where her mother worked, they met and things began from there. Later when he told her he was moving to different town, because of his job, her mother instantly wanted to be near. Hints where he goes, they go.

Through she wasn’t mad about the sudden move, maybe a little happy. She didn’t have any friends to leave behind, mostly just bullies. Probably, because she looked too young for her real age as well as too smart for her own good. Next thing you know not only are you getting pick on by the regulars bullies, “Do my homework and I won’t give you a new face,” “Hand over the money now,” “Move it you little Bitch,” (etc…), but the nerds too. The nerds too for crying out loud, what kind of person gets pick on by the nerds. They only play tricks on you, set their science projects off on you. However, it was not her fault, the damn principal said it over PA system, announcing her test scores to everyone. Thinking it would inspirer the other students to be more like her, wrong.

But, not this time she was going to stand up for herself. She hoped. Or at least keep her head up. Maybe these people would be nice. She turned left walking down the sidewalk.

At least now they live in a house. Before they lived in a too small apartment building, where the sounds traveled too easily. Now, she had a larger room that could fit more than just her bed, and a connecting bathroom.

Rin pull out a folded piece of newspaper from her cargo jeans. Opening, it was the career section, with blue marker circled square boxes. Most type of jobs circled was fast food restaurants and coffee shops. She wanted a job at the library, but it didn’t have an ad in the paper, so she was going to ask if they needed volunteers. She was a book-nerd and worked a library before. Fast food places were her very last choice, too much grease; she didn’t like to clean it. A café place is her second choice to get, because they tended to have mellow atmospheres, it’s a place to come and relax. She took her time walking around her neighborhood before she began her job hunt. It was a quiet place, every lawn has green grass, and there wasn’t a piece of trash anywhere, or at least she hasn’t spotted any yet. After about a half an hour of memorizing the neighborhood Rin started her job hunting.

-

About three and half hours later, Rin returned home, with a hand full of job applications. To her disappointment the city library wasn’t hiring and didn’t need any volunteer help either. It was something about all the volunteers’ workers being juvenile delinquents. “You want to volunteer, break a few minors laws and you can work off your community service hours here,” was what the security officer said.

Upon opening the door, she heard her mother giggle. Rin signed to herself, then, announcing her presence, before closing the door behind her. Her mother boyfriend is here, she probably called as soon as she said “Bye”. But that wasn’t the reason why she was angry and annoyed it was, because they had been dating for about two months and she never met the guy. Or really seen him, it was just the back of his head and even the back of his head was glance because she accidentally walked in on them, humping on the kitchen counter, when she lived in the apartment. They didn’t notice her and she made a mad dash to her room and put the pillow over her head. And the only reason she knew his name was, because her mother was screaming it. Now things would seem to be the same, Rin would leave the house for a couple of hours and come back home to some kind a noise that she shouldn’t be hearing. Why don’t they go to his house!!!

“Did every thing go well” her mother said it a followed by ‘sounds’.

“Yeah,” Rin replied. And with that she covered her ears going went up stairs, to her room locking it behind her. Placing the papers down on the desk she went to her bed on the opposite side of the room, she pulled the peach color cover off the made mattress. Gathering the cotton fabric in her arms she went back to the door stuffing it underneath to help block the sounds. She sat down at her desk, and went to work filling out the applications.

-

“Six done. Two to go,” said Rin, an hour later. She stood up and stretched her body, moving her aching fingers from the constant writing.

Her stomach growled, hungry she thought. After kicking away the blanket, unlocking the door Rin opened it a little and listened. She heard nothing that she shouldn’t be hearing and walked down stairs to the kitchen. This is another reason why she liked this house, the walls were not thin and sound didn’t travel as far. It was why she could work in peace for an hour.

Her mother was in there cleaning the counter; some kind of white cream got adsorbed in to the dishcloth.

Burn that towel. And we need a new counter space. Rin thought.

Rin wanted to make a sandwich, but wasn’t sure of the cleanliness of the counter. So, instead she went and opened the refrigerator and pick up a pear.

“Rin”

“Hm,” she said leading up, with a month full of fruit.

“What do you think of Naraku?” Asked her mother.

“What do I think of Naraku” Rin said slowly, looking up at the ceiling.

He has a high sex drive, you two hump like bunnies, and he has black hair.

“I don’t know what to think of him, because I’ve never really met him before.” She said returning her graze back to her mother.

“Oh, right. You probably only seen him when we were…” She trailed off her cheeks glowing pinks.

Rin had the urge to roll her eyes, and walk out the room but refrained from doing it.

“I wanted to tell you, tomorrow we are going shopping for your school uniform and later in the evening we are going to dinner so you can officially meet Naraku.”

“Okay, but can I also turn in my job applications, any time in between?” Rin asked.

“Sure, there should be some extra time, but you don’t have to get a job anytime soon, all expenses are being pay for. Naraku said he wants to take care of us, like a family”

She was wondering how her mother had enough money buy this house; they had barely had and saving. Before, Rin had been helping her mother pay the rent and buy food for them. Her mother was working at 24-hour diner that barely paid enough for the rent. Most of the time they didn’t have electricity or heat. So, as soon as she was old enough she got a job to help her mother.

“You mean, like he wants to get marry.”

Her mother laughed putting her hands on her cheeks saying, “It does sound like that doesn’t it?”

Does she even think of my feeling about this? However things have been hard for us for a while and I haven’t seen her smile or laugh like this in long time. My mom needs this person so it’s alright.

“He must really like you then,” stated Rin.

“Yes, I love him so much,” her mother, signed.

“I am happy, that you’re happy and I would like to met him,” she said.

“Rin” her mother said “One more thing, I wanted to apologize for my behavior in the last couple of months. Those were things a sixteen year old girl shouldn’t be hearing or witness to and I’m sorry for that.”

And after that, she went into great detail about the birds and the bees. That was one talk that Rin never wanted to go through again. Her mother was smiling as she said goodnight to her daughter, thinking she had a good conversation with her. It was more like Rin, just stared her at like she had two heads, while she lectured her child about the male and female species.

Inside her room Rin pull out her wireless laptop from the draw of the nightstand beside her the bed. Turning it on, it had taken her almost two years to save up for it. Setting it down on the desk, and sitting down as well, she got online.
