The Long Kiss Goodnight
Warning: shonen-ai, with a pinch of necrophilia.
It is time.
The sound of the wind made the Lord of the Western Lands look up in the sky. In his stillness, his servant ceased his arguments with the young human girl and fell into respected silence.
For quite sometime the dog demon lord did not turn around as he instructed his servant, Jaken to take Rin with Ah-un and to go as far away as they can.
Jaken did not question the will of his lord.
Something was wrong, even a lowly demon like him had felt a terrible burst of power.
-----
Sesshoumaru remained stoic as his half brother stepped out into the dark woods. The hanyou was no more. Inuyasha was now a demon, a merciless and malicious killing machine that fed unto the power of the jewel.
He had expected to see Inuyasha in a state of derangement, somehow akin to a brute beast or a berserker just as he had encountered before but instead he had met a different person.
Inuyasha made his presence known not to far off and had walked slowly and purposefully towards him.
He was composed, too serene that it alarmed the older dog demon that perhaps it is this sort of calmness that belied a twisted and sophisticated sort of madness.
His younger brother betrayed no emotion as he came nearer. The mark of being a true highborn youkai was evident on Inuyasha’s face.
With lips barely moving, Inuyasha uttered:
‘Take a good look on me.’
‘Do you like what you see now, brother?”
They soon faced off in a respectful distance.
Sesshoumaru would not dignify to answer. In his constant coldness and pride, he would not acknowledge that Inuyasha had indeed become his equal.
Innately he sneered on how his hanyou brother had gone to collect the shards of the Shikon jewel, just to wish to be a full demon. It was pathetic and demeaning. In his eyes, the stain of humanity would not be removed from Inuyasha.
And from this Inuyasha could sense what Sesshoumaru was thinking.
“Am I not enough of your caliber to at least deserve your answer?”
Like a child, he speaks what he thinks and feels.
As an answer, Sesshoumaru turned around and began to walk away.
In a flash, Inuyasha cut off his path and attacked him. The dog demon lord then fought back with the same speed and ferocity. For days they had fought and tested each other’s strength. It had irked Sesshoumaru to see Inuyasha ecstatic in battle. It is as if he was merely playing with him.
As an ultimate attack, Sesshoumaru transformed into his true form with the sincerest intent of finally ending the battle. To his shock, Inuyasha unleashed a new power in the form of another dog demon. And as monsters they fought, with the earth trembled beneath, shaking under their thundering dance of death.
For days and days the battle continued, and both men and youkai crept under mountains and caves, covering their ears from the deafening roar and rumble outside.
In the end, one of them finally lay down unable to move from where he fell.
------
Slowly Sesshoumaru , opened his eyes to see himself again in humanoid form with Inuyasha watching him too close for comfort.
Reading his intentions, Inuyasha said.
“You cracked your spine; you won’t be able to get up before it would completely heal.”
They were rested under a lone tree on a grassy hill. It was night and Inuyasha had his back on Sesshoumaru as he observed the new landscape.
“Instead of a forest, now we have a valley!” Inuyasha laughed, “or a lake if it would rain tonight.”
He turned around to face Sesshoumaru whose disdainful expression was apparent even under the shadows.
Sesshoumaru noted the mirthless tone behind his companion’s laugh. This was not the hanyou that he remembered. The person that replaced Inuyasha was just a shell of what his brother used to be.
“Who are you?”
“I am your shamed, once and always worthless half-brother Inuyasha.”
Inuyasha sat down beside Sesshoumaru.
“Do you know why I sold my soul for this?”
The dog demon did not respond. He saw his two swords pierced to the soil far from his reach.
“Just as the Tessaiga was repelled by you so is your sword by me.” Inuyasha showed his burnt hand to his brother.
Without warning, Sesshoumaru’s hand plunged through Inuyasha’s sternum where his heart rests. Inuyasha writhed under shock and pain, and just as the dog demon lord thought he had finally killed him, Inuyasha’s hand tore through Sesshoumaru’s chest.
“I don’t need my heart to live.” Inuyasha said a matter of factly as the dog demon further crushed the mutilated organ.
“Listen to me, Sesshoumaru!!!” Sesshoumaru coughed out blood as Inuyasha’s hand added a subtle pressure around his beating heart.
The jewel was Inuyasha’s lifeforce. It was what Sesshoumaru concluded and with this he focused his eyes on Inuyasha.
Just as Inuyasha said, Sesshoumaru could not see his brother’s soul in the eyes the stared back at him.
“I learned from you that having emotions and feelings were just too troublesome. You let me believe that my humanity was what kept me away from you.”
Sesshoumaru listened in quiet disbelief that such bold words would come from a face so placid.
“Now that I am what you do not hate. Why do you still not acknowledge me?”
“You are a fool, I will always despise you.”
“I am a fool, I had loved you too.”
To Sesshoumaru’s shock and surprise, Inuyasha deeply kissed him. With the metallic sweet taste of his brother’s blood, Inuyasha became more pressing as his tongue explored and teased Sesshoumaru’s mouth.
Memories about the hanyou flashed in Sesshoumaru’s mind as he was assaulted with kisses. Somehow an empty feeling welled inside of him as he felt the loss of what his brother used to be. He found himself kissing back, desperately holding on to the aftertaste of the love that was once offered to him.
Inuyasha stopped to kiss a minute after his brother’s lips became cold and unresponsive. He stared at the bloodied hand that had inadvertently crushed Sesshoumaru’s heart.
Gently, he closed his brother’s half-opened eyes and smoothed down Sesshoumaru’s clothes and hair. Inuyasha sat in front of Sesshoumaru and looked up as drops of water began to fall on him.
Unmoving, Inuyasha closed his eyes as he let the rain drench him with tears.
