When the worlds collide

Chapter 7



"Well, we've looked her over, and fortunatly there doesn't appear to be any lasting...physical damage to her body." reported the nurse, leafing through the paperwork that had Kagome's condition printed on it. Miss Higurashi looked slightly relieved at the news, glad that permanent harm wasn't done to her daughter, but still being in a state of distress.



"As far as bones go, four of her ribs are bruised, along with her upper right arm and both of her legs. Numerous skin bruises as well, particulary in the...lower regions, from any number of causes, including bite marks, which we may be able to match dental records with. Trace amounts of semen was also extracted, but as there were apparently multipule assailants, we may not be able to match it to any one person." said the nurse, going through the report, before glancing up to Miss Higurashi.



"There was no blood, either from the victim or her assailants, on her person." added the nurse, pointedly glancing up at Suji.



"I'm sorry, I'm afraid that most of it was washed away. Her assailants did throw her into a shower before letting her go." replied Suji, leaving out the part about cleaning up Kagome, although a light blush did come to her face.



"Okay, I have some forms for you to fill out, medical insurance and release forms. She's doing well, I would say, and seems to be in a stable emotional state right now." said the nurse, handing the paperwork over to Suji.



"Thank you very much nurse." replied Miss Suji, taking the forms and turning around, when a familiar voice stopped her.



"I'll be taking those forms, Miss Higurashi." came the voice of Lieutenant Sakanami.



Miss Higurashi turned around to see both him and the deputy standing behind the nurse, who had also turned around in suprise.



"Excuse me? What is going on?" demanded the nurse, a little angry after being startled by the two officers.



"We are here to place Miss Kagome Higurashi in custody, pending an investigation into the illegal activity of drug possession and possible usage." spoke up deputy Saji, holding out a pair of handcuffs for emphasis.



"Your crazy!" Suji practically screamed, and was backed up by the nurse.



"We've just finished her physical examination, and we detected no signs of substance abuse." said the nurse.



"We have a witness who reported the trading of illegal substances between this girl and another one from the same high school in front of the shrine." spoke Sakanami in a low voice.



"And that's all?" questioned the nurse.



"Pending a search of the grounds for any signs of drugs present, yes." replied Deputy Saji.



"Don't you need a search warrant for that?" backfired the nurse.



"Yes, and unfortuantly, the only way we can get one is by having the consent of the owner of the property." replied Saji.



"Well Miss Higurashi, what will it be? If we find no drugs present in the premises of Higurashi shrine, then your daughter will be free to go, with our apologies." added Lieutenant Sakanami, glancing at his partner.



Miss Suji Higurashi stopped, glanced at first to the nurse, then to the two policemen, before nodding her head.



"You have my permission to conduct a search of the premises of our shrine." said Miss Suji.



"Very well. Unfortuantly, we still need to take Kagome into custody at this point, but we'll refrain from putting her into a cell until the search is completed." said Sakanami, nodding to Deputy Saji who moved into the hospital room.



"Wait...let me talk to Kagome first." said Suji, stopping the deputy from entering into the room.



Deputy Saji glanced at his partner, who nodded to him. Saji stepped back, and allowed Miss Higurashi to enter into the room.

"Kagome..." Miss Suji looked into the room, and saw her daughter sitting up in the hospital bed, her eyes gazing out the window, her hands resting on her legs.



Kagome glanced over at her mother, and offered up a weak attempt at a re-assuring smile. Suji felt her heart breaking just a little bit as she watched her daughter rise from the bed, her injuries giving her difficulty to do so.



Kagome's breathing came in ragged gasps every so often, the result of injured ribs and damaged organs, and her steps were unsure, due to the amout of damage done to her legs and her waist.



But she did walk none-the-less, and came over to give her mother a fierce hug.



"I was so scared..." said Kagome, before tears began to flow from her eyes.



"It's okay honey, everything will be okay." said Suji, fibbing the truth slightly. She sighed, before pulling apart from Kagome.



"Kagome, I need you to be strong. There are two policemen waiting outside the room. They want to escort you down to the station, and question you about the incident today. Please, do this for me, it'll be resolved soon." now Miss Higurashi was outright lying, and she knew it, but couldn't help it, she didn't want to cause her daughter to panic, not so soon after the 'incident'.



"Okay mom. I'm ready whenever they are." said Kagome. She felt that her mother may have been lying, and suddenly remembered about what the boys had said about drugs. A sudden fear creeped into her, but she resisted it's hold. She was tired of being afraid. It was time to start fighting back.



"Okay honey." said Miss Higurashi, pinching Kagome's cheek before exiting the hosptial room.



Outside, she glanced to the two policemen, well, glared at them was more like it.



"I told her that you two would be escorting her down to the station for questioning about the 'incident' earlier today. Please, don't make and scene and handcuff her. She said she's willing to go along with it." said Miss Higurashi.



"Okay." said Deputy Saji, before entering into the room. A moment later, he came out with Kagome, guiding her by holding onto her right shoulder. Kagome flinched, slighly uncomforted by being in the presence of another two male strangers.



"Come along, Kagome." said Lieutenant Sakanami, leading the his partner and the girl into the elevator. Miss Suji Higurashi watched as long as she could, before the doors closed. After they did so, she went to sit at a nearby bench. Only then did she begin to cry.



In the elevator, Kagome glanced at either of the policemen, then down at the ground.



"Do you know what you're being taken in for?" asked deputy Saji, his tone slightly sarcastic.



"Yes." replied Kagome.



"Do elaborate then." said the deputy.



"One of the boys who attacked me, he said that if I told the cops, that they would turn me in for substance abuse." explained Kagome.



Saji glanced up at his partner, who shared a look with him.



"And are you on any substances right now?" asked Lieutenant Sakanami.



"No." stated Kagome, firmly. Her voice held nothing but the truth, and the lieutenant faltered for a moment, before he remembered what he had seen in her room. But his head did begin to swirl with several thoughts.



"We'll be searching your house just to be sure." added deputy Saji.



"I told you, I don't abuse drugs. Go ahead and search, I have nothing to hide." said Kagome, her voice still strong with conviction.



"Very well." said Saji, his voice sullen as any hopes for a confession started to disappear.



The elevator reached the ground floor. The doors opened, and the two officers lead Kagome out into the lobby, heading for the parking garage.

Inuyasha headed out the door, his nose working into overtime, tracking the scents that he had detected earlier. His ears were perked up to full alert, waiting for any sounds to reach them.



He found Kagome's scent, picked it apart from the other scents. It disappeared at a point, to be replaced by one that was smelly in oil, the 'scent' of the ambulance thing that had transported Kagome to the hospital.



Working from the track, Inuyasha made his way to the hospital. It was a difficult journey, because so many similar scents intermingled with the scent of the ambulance that were similar.



Finally, being totally lost in the middle of the city, he asked one of the local shopkeeps which direction to the hospital.



Several minutes later, Inuyasaha reached the front of the lobby doors. He stopped dead where he was, detecting the presence of his beloved Kagome, coming in his direction.



The sliding doors opened, and there before him was Kagome, flanked on eithe side by a pair of policemen.



"Kagome..." he said, his eyes growing wide with concern and worry, some of the anger dissipating from him. His ears could detect the problems with her breathing, and his eyes saw many of the bruises, and his nose picked up the scent of recent fear and anguish, although he could tell that her spirit was still very strong.



"Inuyasha..." she said when her head came up and she recognized him, her eyes going wide with sudden joy and hope. His heart raced as he saw this, and he was overjoyed to see her again, still very much alive.



She was jerked aside though by deputy Saji, roughly grabbing her arm and yanking her to stand beside him.



"Ow..." complained Kagome, using her free arm to rub her sore arm.



"Who are you?" asked Lieutenant Sakanami, his hand on his holstered pistol.



"I was about to ask you the same thing." replied Inuyasha, his claws flexing as all hints of happiness disappeared, his voice again laced with the hatred he had earlier felt, a hint of redness beginning to enter into his eyes....
