Chapter Six:
Gratitude

Kouga awoke to a nauseous
feeling. It wasn’t the same nausea as
all those times Shi’en had made him suck him up over
and over again, swallowing everything until he vomited it all back up and ended
up fucked (quite literally) none-too-pleasantly for his efforts.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> In truth, it often seemed that class=SpellE>Shi’en was most pleased with himself when class=SpellE>Kouga was in such pain that he could barely stand, let
alone walk.

This now though—this was different.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> It wasn’t so much his body that wanted to
vomit as his heart. ‘My soul feels
sick,’ he realized. ‘It’s strange.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Why this feeling?style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Why here now?’style='mso-spacerun:yes'> And then he remembered Miroku’s
burning hands. That’s right.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Today wasn’t for feeling guilty or sad or
resigned to a black fate—today was for finally fighting back.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> And if all went according to plan—today would
be for gratitude as well. He noticed a
man’s blue kimono left on the chair by the door for him and stood carefully.

Inuyasha stirred slightly.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> “Kagome, it’s too early,” he complained
sleepily, arm flopping over onto the empty tatami
that Kouga had just risen from.style='mso-spacerun:yes'>

Inuyasha’s nose started going
before the rest of him. He smelled class=SpellE>Kouga and an eye shot open suddenly.

“Get up, Inuyasha,” class=SpellE>Kouga said. “I don’t
want to be late because of you.”

Inuyasha remembered then what was
going on and watched Kouga a moment as the wolf demon
fiddled with the kimono’s sash.

Oy, what are you doing?” he
asked.

Kouga grumbled, “I never style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>could figure these stupid things out.”

‘He doesn’t know how to put a kimono on?style='mso-spacerun:yes'> That just figures,’ Inuyasha
thought. “Come here, I’ll do it, moron,”
he sighed. Geez,
what were you raised by a pack of rabid…”style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Kouga’s raised
eyebrow reminded him not to continue. class=SpellE>Er…nevermind.”style='mso-spacerun:yes'> ‘Idiot he is
a rabid wolf, geez.
Me an’ my big mouth.’style='mso-spacerun:yes'> “Alright done.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Let’s go.”

“Uh… …thanks.”

Che.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Don’t start being polite now, you damn
wimp. It doesn’t suit you.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Just tell me to shove it the way you always
do. I hate you better that way.”

Feh.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Whatever.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Let’s go watch Miroku
kick ass,” he said confidently, though his insides were churning and his mind
added, ‘I hope.’

Heh.style='mso-spacerun:ye Now you’re talking.”

*#*

Miroku had been meditating since
before dawn. Now, the sun beginning to
rise higher in the sky, the monk stood and sighed.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> ‘I get myself into such troublesome
situations,’ he thought.

Walking over to Shippo, he poked
the kitsune pup.
“Rise and shine, Shippo,” he said.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> “It’s time for my big show.”

Shippo crawled out from under the
blankets and yawned loudly, rubbing his eyes with the back of a closed
fist. Miroku
smiled to himself. ‘He’s a cute kid, class=SpellE>Shippo.’

Oy, Miroku.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> After you beat Shi’en,”
Shippo said ‘after you beat Shi’en
like the outcome was already obvious.
“What are you going to do?”

“Go back to the way things were, I suppose.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Kouga’s too
simple-minded to let this get him down for long.”

“I mean about the scent thing,” Shippo
frowned at how the monk avoided even thinking about the subject.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> “They weren’t lying.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> It’s gross.
That snake’s smell and the smell of sex is all
over Kouga.”

Shippo, aren’t you a little too
young to say stuff like that so easily?” Miroku
scolded.

“I know what it is,” Shippo rolled
his eyes. “Are you gonna…?”
the kitsune tried to ask.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> The question was obvious: ‘do you intend to
mate him.’

“Don’t be silly. I’m
only interested in beautiful women.
There’s just no way a guy would ever interest me.”

Shippo rolled his eyes at the monk
again. “Then you’re not really saving
him,” the kid said.

“Well, time for my big fight scene!” Miroku
said cheerfully, ignoring the kitsune’s comment.

Kouga will be fine.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> He’s stubborn and he won’t be caught
off-guard again. All he really needs is
an excuse to get out of here. Anyway,
it’s impossible. I’m not interested in
men, and even if I was, I wouldn’t touch a guy who’s been traumatized like
this.

*#*

Sango sat beside class=SpellE>Kouga with Inuyasha and Kagome on
his other side, and the demon exterminator glared threateningly at anyone who
so much as looked at the wolf youkai.style='mso-spacerun:yes'>

Kouga tried to grin at her and say
something witty, but he was too nervous.
Miroku…he’s going to win, right?” he found
himself asking.

Inuyasha whacked him over the head
for his trouble. “I told you…”

But Sango cut him off.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> “Don’t underestimate that lech.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> He’ll definitely win.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> I can’t think of anyone I would rather fight
beside.”

For some reason, Sango’s
reassurances were more convincing than Inuyasha’s and
the wolf prince sighed, and then tensed as Shi’en
entered the room and looked at
him.

Inuyasha, he still has a jewel
shard,” Kagome whispered. And hearing
this only made Kouga more nervous.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> ‘He’s only human.’

“Relax,” Sango whispered.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> “Even if Shi’en style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>is strr, Miroku
still has his wind tunnel.”

‘Oh, that’s right!’ Kouga
realized. He’d forgotten all about it.

Shipo scurried over and hopped
into Kagome’s lap and Miroku leveled a calm stare at
the wolf for a moment before playing it up, waving, winking, and blowing him a
kiss.

Kouga blushed brightly.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> ‘What the hell is wrong with my face?!’style='mso-spacerun:yes'> He wondered why it felt so hot and
flushed. ‘Blushing? N—No
way!’

“Have you made your peace, monk?” Shi’en
taunted.

“I have,” Miroku returned.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> “Now I can say with certainty that I won’t
feel guilty about killing you at all ♥,” he said cheerily.

The comment angered Shi’en.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> “You won’t take him from me!” he
demanded. “He’s mine, no one
else’s!” The viper prince charged, claws
extended, and the clanking of metal signified the maneuver being blocked by class=SpellE>Miroku’s staff.

Miroku swung said staff in an arc
across Shi’en’s midsection, but Shi’en
jumped back, avoiding the blow. class=SpellE>Miroku knew better than to stop and led the demon attack,
so he stepped forward, following with an overhead strike.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Shi’en blocked the
blow, but not the charm that Miroku pinned to his
chest immediately afterwards.

“Ah!” he screamed and fell backwards under the power of the
magical kanji which burned up immediately after Kouga
read it. ‘Burning
hands.’
The wolf class=SpellE>youkai remembered Miroku’s own
burning hands and was hit by the physical memory of everywhere they had touched
him. Those hands burning through his
skin, his shoulder, his back, a memory of last night’s embrace.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> His heart thundered in his ears and he leaned
forward unconsciously swallowing. ‘I never
noticed it before, but he’s…extremely hot for a human.’style='mso-spacerun:yes'> The thought caught Kouga
off guard. No, he realized, he was just
in denial before. To be completely
honest, as he thought back, he’d always known Miroku
was…attractive. Sadly, he also knew the monk
to be painfully straight. class=GramE>‘Damn, stupid Shi’en.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> If it wasn’t for you I’d never have realized
that I… that I want his burning hands on me, all of me.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> He sighed slightly, a bit dejected.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> ‘It’s got nothing to do with love.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> I don’t know the first thing about love.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> But I want to feel those burning hands again,
to know his taste, drown in the scent of him, to make him moan.’style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Suddenly, the wishful image of class=SpellE>Miroku writhing in ecstasy
floods out all coherent thought and Kouga
clutches, white-knuckled, the table before him.
‘Holy shit.’
He figured it was a safe bet that he wanted him.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> It was purely physical, of course.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> ‘Too bad you aren’t…like me.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> I want to do all sorts of perverted things to
you,’ he thought.

Sango had misinterpreted his
sudden clenched muscles since as he leaned forward and tensed,
Miroku had just been flung some ten feet backwards
and crashed into one of the tables to the right.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> She placed a hand on his shoulder and told
him, “don’t worry. He’ll just get serious
now.”

“Uh…yeah…” Kouga replied with a
swallow.

And sure enough, Miroku swept class=SpellE>Shi’en’s feet out from under him and stood, stabbing
through the youkai’s shoulder with the end of his
staff. Shi’en
screamed in pain and tried to stab the monk with his venomed
claws, but Miroku dodged, only getting slightly
burned on his right ankle as a good chunk of his robes were eaten away.

“Getting a little frisky, eh?” the monk taunted with a very
slightly arrogant little smirk. class=GramE>“Too bad for you that I’m out of your league.”

“Yeah, kick his ass, Miroku,” class=SpellE>Kouga said before he knew what he was doing.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> “…er…uh…”

Nam’wa smiled to herself.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> ‘I’m sssory class=SpellE>Trin’da,’ she thought.
‘I know Shi’en is your brother, but those two
belong together. Even a fool can class=SpellE>ssee it,’ she thought.

“About time you started cheering him on,” class=SpellE>Inuyasha huffed.
“He’s doing it for you.”

‘That’s right, for me…I guess…because he’s a good person…but
it only makes me want to touch him more,’ Kouga
thought.

Inuyasha raised his eyebrow
slightly as a momentarily needy expression crossed the wolf youkai’s
face as he watched the monk whip out a charm card, throw it into the air and
hit it hard with his staff. “Water
Wall,” the slip read, and it saved Miroku from class=SpellE>Shi’en’s poison talons.

The jewel shard embedded into Shi’en’s
left eye pulsed. He was badly bruised,
but Miroku was also a bit wounded.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Even so, the young Viper Prince knew that he
was losing. His eye started class=GramE>glowing a bright, deep green, and venom shot out of it at class=SpellE>Miroku like a poison blade ripping through his right
shoulder. Hecried
out and fell to one knee, clutching at the wound.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Green poison dripped harmlessly down class=SpellE>Shi’en’s face as the monk forced himself to his feet.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> “You think…you’re the first person who’s
tried to kill me with poison?” he grit out. style='mso-spacerun:yes'> The pain was bad, but after class=SpellE>Naraku’s poison insects, he could bear it.

Thoughtlessly, when Miroku was
hit, Kouga leapt to his feet.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> He was awed by the monk’s resolve now.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> He couldn’t even stand when class=SpellE>Shi’en’s poison licked through him, but Miroku
kept fighting.

‘Not good,’ Miroku thought.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> The poison was spreading quickly and his
vision blurred. ‘Only one thing left
then,’ and he moved to use his wind tunnel.

“He can’t be serious!” Sango
gasped. “If the venom gets inside,
he’ll…”

Kouga didn’t need to hear the rest
of it. He knew the answer, and jumped
over the table, heedless of his own aggrevated
wounds, grabbing Miroku by the waist.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> From outside the battle it seemed obvious the
monk would win, even now. Though class=SpellE>Shi’en was physically stronger, their skill levels could
not be compared. “Don’t kill him!” the
wolf begged Miroku, the echo of what could possibly
happen to Miroku if something went wrong spinning
through his mind.

“What?!style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Why the hell not?!!?”
Miroku asked, startled.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> “After what he…!”

‘Why am I this angry,’ the monk wondered, twining the prayer
beads tightly about his wrist again.

“Because I hate him!” class=SpellE>Kouga demanded before calming down slightly.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> “I hate him so much that I want him to live.”

Miroku’sclass=GramE> eyes widened in something akin to understanding.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> He glared at Shi’en,
or at least thought he glared at Shi’en, his vision
was so blurry it was hard to tell for certain.

“If Kouga wants you to live, then
you live,” he said. “Without him,
knowing that someone else is touching him, and that he likes it,” the monk
stated.

“We aren’t finished…” Shi’en began
to protest angrily.

“You are quite
finished, my brother,” Trin’da said.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> “I am certain that father would agree.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> The victor is obvious.”

Nam’wa stood and handed the jewel
shards to Miroku and a glass filled with a
putrid-smelling yellow liquid. “Drink,”
she said. “It will counteract the class=SpellE>poisson.”

Miroku’s hand shook a bit as he
reached for the glass, so Kouga snatched it and
brought it to his lips.

“Ugh. Taste’s like
urine,” Miroku complained as his vision slowly
cleared.

“Stop whining,” Kouga stated
flatly.

“But…oh, forget it, here.”
He handed the jewel shards over almost absentmindedly, and class=SpellE>Kouga felt instantly more at ease as he put them back in his
legs where they belonged. Almost like
his old self, only that would never be the case again, because he’d been a
slave and discovered now that his first real
crush was on a man whose altruistic kindness was painful, who’s
touch burned, who didn’t desire him.
Well, isn’t life just grand?

…to be continued…
