Chapter 6 – Sango.
Kaeda stood near the entrance of her village trying to shake her uneasy feeling. Many of the villagers had traveled to the North East to some of the nearby villages to search for more of her special herbs and potions that only grow around this time. So despite a handful of farmers and wives, the village was empty.
Even though there was an increase in rogue demonic activity since the disappearance of Naraku, their presence hadn’t seemed to pose any real threat. But Kaeda still felt worried and wanted the group to hurry and return. She idly swept at a few fallen leaves trying to occupy her mind. Suddenly in the distance, she heard a young voice calling to her.
“Lady Kaeda!!” it was Shippo.
Overcome with urgency, the young fox demon leaped off of Kirara and into Kaeda’s arms. The old woman stood, confused with his actions until she saw Miroku draped across the demonic cat’s back.
“Oh my word, what happened?”
“Oh Lady Kaeda, it’s terribly. Miroku fell off of Kirara’s back and hit his head on some rocks. He’s been bleeding and unconscious since we left.” Shippo’s childish voice quivered with fear and concern.
Kaeda frown as she watched Sango and Kirara land in front of her. Sango tossed down her hiraikotsu and helped to pull Miroku off of Kirara. Some of the farmers had come to help when they heard Shippo and grabbed Miroku’s body and legs to help him to the ground. Sango sat with his head in her lap cradling his head trying to cover his wound. Kaeda knelt down to look. “He’s also a severe wound to his back.”
“Quickly!” she shouted to 2 of the farmers, “Help me get him to one of the empty huts!”
As the farmers lifted Miroku’s lifeless body and carried him to the hut, Kaeda instructed one of the women and Shippo to go to her hut and gather herbs and dressings. Sango felt a little useless among the others. She was a demon hunter, not a nurse.
“Sango, what happened to Kagome and Inuyasha?” Kaeda finally asked.
She was walking quickly to the hut and pulling Sango along.
“Inuyasha thought he smelled Naraku and ran into a dark wooded area a few miles south of here. And Kagome ran after him. When we tried to follow, we got knocked back by some kind of barrier.” Sango grabbed her arms, frustrated with anger at the very sound of Naraku’s name. Every mention of that demon reminds her of the tragedy with her family and her missing younger brother Kohaku, who’s been under Naraku’s spell ever since.
Sango sat in the doorway of Miroku’s hut, anxious. She had changed into her yokai taijiya outfit and wanted to return to the wooded area, but Kaeda pointed out that only Inuyasha and Miroku were strong enough to break demonic barriers. If Inuyasha and Kagome were inside the barrier, then she would need Master Miroku’s help to enter. She sighed heavily as she watched Kaeda and the other woman of the village work on him. The 2 women proceeded to mix herbs and potions together. They removed all of Miroku’s clothing leaving Sango blushing at the door when she caught sight of his manhood. Careful of his wind tunnel wrappings, they placed their mixtures at the wound site and at various points on his body to drive out his fever. They were able to extract all of the rock fragments that were left in his back. They then covered both wounds with tight dressings to stop the bleeding. Once they were finished treating his wounds, they left Sango there to watch over him. Lady Kaeda had an ulterior motive for wanting Sango to stay. She knew that Miroku cared about her and figured that her presence would promote a quicker healing in him.
Sango sat near the door until it started to get dark then she decided to sit a little closer to him, grabbing his hand to confirm that he was still alive. Miroku was lying on the mat floor with his head turn toward the wall. He had been pretty much unconscious and unresponsive since the accident and now, she was finally starting to worry about him. As she sat closer, he didn’t stir or make any lecherous attempts and that was the weirdest thing of all. She laid her head down on his chest listening to his faint heartbeat. Then she began to hear his voice softly whisper something. “Og…nas…” he whispered his eyes slightly opened. Sango frowned trying to hear him. Is he waking up? Does he need something?
“Oog…naas...” he whispered again as his eyes went back out of focus. Sango was completely bewildered. Deep down she was beginning to fear that he was calling the name of some woman that he loved in the past. The word danced in her head fueling her anger and fear. Finally overcome, she let go of his hand and stormed out of the hut. Shippo was feeding Kirara and turned around when he saw Sango exit the hut.
“Sango, Sango, is Miroku awake?”
“No, he’s too busy dreaming about his precious Ognas.” Sango growled. She didn’t want to show that she was felling bitter, but couldn’t help it. And the flames behind her head were a dead give away.
“His what…?” Shippo cocked his head to the side, confused. He thought to himself for a second about the name then laughed.
“What’s so funny?”
“Silly Sango….” Shippo couldn’t speak for laughing, “Ognas is your name backwards.” The little demon chuckled some more and he walked back over to Kirara.
Oh Gods, now I’m getting jealous of myself. Sango kicked herself. She shook her head, feeling stupid that she constantly let Miroku get to her. But it wasn’t really Miroku, just her own inability to speak and act on her own feelings.
“Oh Miroku..” she whispered sorrowful.
She was starting to feel guilty. Sango was about to go back into the hut when she spotted a dark creature in the distance sky. Without a word, she scrambled to get her hiraikotsu and ran to a clearing to track the beast. Kirara sensed the demon as well and quickly transformed into her full demonic form joining Sango. The beast flow into view as Samgo readied her weapon.
“Aye child! Wait!” Kaeda yelled to Sango as she was about to throw the boomerang. “Look there!”
Sango looked at the approaching beast. It was a twin-headed demon wearing a bridle. On it’s back was a little girl and another figure draped across the demon’s back. The demon beast circled then finally landed in front of Sango and the others. Kaeda gasped when she realized who was lying on the back of the creature.
“It…it’s Kagome.” Sango quickly reached for her and pulled her down from the demon. Kaeda and the woman from before removed the fluffy scarf and wrapped Kagome in blankets rushing her back to another empty hut. Sango held the scarf as she watched the women and Shippo disappear in the hut.
“If Kagome is here, where is Inuyasha…” she whispered. Sango wasn’t expecting an answer so it shocked her when the little girl spoke.
“I know that name.” Rin reached out for the scarf. “That’s Lord Sesshomaru’s half-brother. I hear him and Jaken talking about him often.”
Sango’s eyes narrowed as she looked at the girl trying to place her face. “Wait a minute, you’re the little girl that was with Jaken when he tried to steal Inuyasha’s sword. You flew in to rescue him.”
“Oh yeh,” Rin smiled as she rubbed the back of her head, “Sorry about that. Jaken wanted to give a gift to Lord Sesshomaru.”
Who is this kid? Sango thought to herself. She couldn’t place the child’s positive mood.
“You brought Kagome back here. Where was she? Where’s Inuyasha? Can you take me to them?” Sango handed Rin the scarf still trying to press the child for information.
“Sango?!” she heard a familiar voice calling to her. She turned to find that Miroku was weakly stand at the entrance of the hut. He seemed very dazed and disoriented and suddenly he lost his balance and collapsed against the doorframe of the hut. Sango instantly ran to help him. She grabbed his arm and tried to pull him to lean on her. Miroku regained himself enough to weakly point in the direction of the girl. It seemed that Rin used the distraction to leave.
“Bye. Nice talking with you. I’ll ask my Lord if he can send Inuyasha to you.” It was amazing how Rin was rarely in a dishearten mood. She flew away on Ah-Un’s back to Sesshomaru as Sango could only watch.
Sango helped Miroku back into the hut. His body stiffened with pain as he groaned a little, but he tried to hold it in for her sake. She helped him back to the center of the hut and laid him down on the mat.
“Miroku are you crazy getting up like that? You could’ve aggravated your wounds.”
Miroku smirked. “Sango, Sango, Sango…I can’t let the future mother of my children do everything.” He said weakly, yet candidly.
“You’ve got to be delirious!” Sango scoffed. He sighed deeply then his eyes when back out of focus and he was unconscious again which made Sango question if his statement was wishful thinking or delirium. She put her hand to his chest and gasped when she suddenly realized that he didn’t just pass out, but stopped breathing as well. An instant wave of panic struck her as she tried to lightly shake him.
“Miroku, this isn’t funny. Wake Up!!”
“Miroku!”
“Miroku?”
Desperately she bent down and covered his lips with her own. She blew air into his mouth hoping that it would trigger his breathing.
“… you can’t do this, Miroku… I.., I can’t lose you…I love you.”
Sango didn’t realize what she had said until she said it. Quickly she blew more air into his mouth until finally she felt him lightly inhale against her lips. Miroku started breathing normally again and Sango leaned back with frazzled nerves. Turning all different shades of pink, red and purple as she remember what she said. Her embarrassment doubled when she realized that she was sitting on top of him straddling his body. Apparently she had jumped on him without any thought to her position, but now she froze as she realized that she was perched slightly atop of his manhood. A weird feeling tingled through her body originating from her female center. She eased back to her spot next to him; her face flushed with guilt and embarrassment. Sango couldn’t believe that she’d have such thoughts about a man while he was down. If he would have awoken that would have been a terribly arousing position. But the question was, arousing for whom…him or her? Sango figured that she had had enough awkward moments with Miroku and decided that this would be a good time to go and check on Kagome.
Meanwhile, Kaeda and the other woman from the village both checked out Kagome and found that she didn’t have any visible wounds.
“It appears that the child be in some sort of shock.”
They left her to sleep in the hut with Shippo watching over her. The young demon decided to draw a few pictures of the beautiful spring they had visited earlier and pin them up on the walls.
“See Kagome, you really need to wake up to see this.”
After a little while Sango entered to check on her. “Anything Shippo?” she asked kneeling beside Kagome.
“No it’s like she’s sleeping, but she won’t wake up.”
“Something really terrible must’ve happened in those woods.” Sango bit her lip. At this point, with both Kagome and Miroku unconscious there was nothing she could do. She was full of frustration and undetermined anger towards Inuyasha. If he’d never run off into those woods, everyone would be alright!
Kaeda walked into the hut and placed a wet compress on Kagome’s forehead.
“Lady Kaeda is there anything we can do to wake her and find out what happened?”
“Unfortunately child, we’re at a point where we have to just sit and wait.”
