Chapter 6: A Christmas Miracle…
Six months since he’d come bursting into my life with his beautiful smile and gorgeous amber eyes. Six months since I’d taken on my physical therapy as if it were my greatest challenge, and I suppose it was. Where had the time gone?
I stood at my window, looking out over the front lawn. Everything was covered by a thick dusting of snow and the bright, fat, multicolored lights that decorated the Christmas Tree the home had put up in honor of the holiday reflected off it’s brilliant surface. I leaned my head against the cold window pane, closing my eyes.
I’d always loved Christmas. The lights from the tree outside reminded me of the tree my grandparents always decorated in the front room of their modest home. Homemade ornaments, popcorn and cranberry strands and a beautiful angel placed atop. A regular storybook Christmas and one I’d missed sorely since they’d both passed away two years before the accident.
My mom had decided to make the following two Christmases even more special than usual. I, being the only child on both sides, had been spoiled and pampered, my mom didn’t want me to lose that feeling, I suppose.
Mom loved Christmas as much as I. We’d go shopping, watch the carolers, bake cookies, and attend services all season long. I would always be thankful that I’d had that time with her. It still hurt, but time was doing it’s job, I guess… healing my wounds both inside and out.
“Happy Christmas, Rin.”, a soft, husky and unmistakably familiar voice spoke up from behind me a second before two strong arms wrapped around my waist. I looked down, heart thumping.
Sesshomaru’s hands were clasped against my stomach and every breath I took, pressed me deeper against him. I felt my belly do flips, my breath come fast. “Have you got a kiss for us?”, he asked, his breath warm against my ear. I placed my hands atop his and slid my forefinger against his silver ring, laying my head back against his chest.
“No?”, he asked, spinning me around to face him.
Beautiful.
Please just forgive me while I state the obvious for the hundredth time. He fair took my breath away, he did.
“A what?”, I asked, my eyes lowering to his mouth even as my hands grasped his firm biceps through two layers of smooth leather and soft cashmere.
He wore an offwhite cashmere turtleneck sweater with dressy black slacks and black boots. Over the sweater he’d worn a beautiful black leather coat and I saw the ends of his matching driving gloves peeking from his coat pocket as well as his offwhite scarf slung about the neck of it. His cheeks and nose were pink from the cold, his eyes glittering merrily.
Simply Stunning. Simply Irresistible!
I closed my eyes and inhaled, smiling. I barely had time to enjoy the fact that he smelled of JOOP before he slid his hands back to my waist and surprised the heck out of me.
“A kiss.”, he answered mere seconds before his lips met mine very briefly… but for the very first time. I wondered if it was the magic of the season that allowed for it. Whatever it was, I thanked the Gods above that night when I at last climbed into my warm, soft bed… a million stars shining in my eyes.
“Happy Christmas”, he said once more, his eyes gazing into mine. “You look great!”
‘Happy Christmas, Sesshomaru. Thank you. So do you.”, I answered, holding to his arms NOW just to steady myself.
“Thanks. So you like the dress then?”, he asked, smiling down at me.
“I love it! It’s beautiful!”, I said, looking down at the dress he’d had specially delivered to me from a designer he’d searched out in France while he had been there briefly many months before.
The dress… oh God… how can I do it justice even now with MY words? It was of a soft, thick, green velvet, so smooth it felt like a hug against my body. A low scooped neckline, nipped in waist, and straight skirt that fell just at my knees brought out curves I’d never realized I possessed. It was simple but it was elegant and it WASN’T a dress that most girls my age would’ve dressed in. It made me look and feel as if I belonged in his world of glitz and glamour. It made me feel special and beautiful.
Sesshomaru had contacted Sango at some point, telling her what he was planning, asking for her help and to please keep it a secret. He then had further asked her to take my measurements under the guise that they at Sacred Heart wanted to see just how much I’d progressed since first arriving there… since I’d become human again, I supposed.
I’d never suspected what he was up to… and that was what made it even more lovely the day IT arrived in it’s gorgeous pink box, all wrapped in clouds of pink tissue paper with a note from Sesshomaru tucked safely inside.
Dearest Rin,
This is the first part of my Christmas surprise to YOU! I hope you love it as much as I loved keeping this secret from you. I can’t wait to see you in it. Remember your promise to me…
Wear it for me on Christmas night, sweetheart.
All my love,
Sesshomaru
I’d taken the dress from it’s place in the box, carefully laying it across my bed. It was the most beautiful thing I’d ever owned! How had he known what size I wore? I peeked inside the neckline only to find the name of a designer I was quite aware of… Jean Paul Tressor! I gasped, my legs giving way underneath me so that I sank down quite suddenly onto my bed.
Sesshomaru and I had sat looking thru fancy dress magazines one day while he’d been visiting. He’d made me choose what dresses I liked and asked me why I liked them. I’d thought nothing of his curiosity as I’d quickly discovered that Sesshomaru was always interested in things… lots of things… and he’d quiz me to death if he ever got started on something! Several of the dresses I’d picked were by Tressor but I hadn’t realized it until Sesshomaru had pointed it out to me.
Now I realized what he’d been planning months before Christmas had even entered my brain. The birthday party he’d helped Sango to organize for me when I’d turned sixteen was NOTHING compared to this and THAT had been the most amazing time EVER!
He made me feel like a princess!
I’d smoothed my fingers down the lovely velvet of the dress, imagining how I’d look in it and hoping I wouldn’t disappoint him. I wanted to be lovely for him, someone he was proud to have as a friend.
Sango had of course made me try it on as soon as she’d walked in that weekend. I was amazed that it fit so beautifully but happened to glance over at her smiling like the cat who’d ate the canary and realized she’d been in on THIS as well. She and Sesshomaru were pretty sneaky, I reckoned. But I’d given her a huge hug and asked if she’d do my hair and make up for me on Christmas night. She’d agreed, squealing in delight!
“Rin? You’re zoning on me, right?”, Sesshomaru smiled, snapping his fingers in front of my dream filled eyes. I nodded, blushed and smiled.
“So?”, he asked.
“Hmm?”
“You have something for me then?” he grinned.
As a matter of fact I did. At first I’d thought it silly and childish to make him a gift with my own two hands but the more I thought about it, the more I realized what it would mean to him… and to me. I’d painstakingly knitted him a pretty scarf in a color that I thought matched his amazing eyes, wrote a poem inside a special card I’d made just for him AND baked him an apple pie to take home with him when he left me to go home. I had to say I was quite proud of myself. Six months ago, the girl I was would’ve never accomplished any of it, I had so much to be thankful to Sesshomaru for.
I turned to reach for the brightly colored gift bag that sat on my desk just to my right, feeling the tug of his hand at my waist and I looked back at him.
“Uh un.”, he said, smiling down into my eyes. “You know what I want, Rin.” Realization dawned on me then and I nodded, suddenly nervous.
He backed away from me to the doorway of my room, his eyes bright and shining on mine. He’d been gone for over a month from me this time and I felt as if I were drinking him in with every glance we shared. I felt DIFFERENT somehow, and a bit scared.
I bit my lip… and took the first of ten steps that brought me to where I’d ended up in his arms once more, watching as the smile spread across his handsome features.
I’d worked hard for him, even getting Sango to help me out with my exercises as well as swimming with me in the pool. As soon as we’d accomplished it, and it had taken months to do so, AND as soon as the dress arrived… Sango had taken it upon herself to go into town and buy a pair of beautiful, black velvet, mid-heeled slippers for me. She’d had me practice walking in them until I had to practically BEG to stop. But it had all been worth it.
Just the look in Sesshomaru’s eyes now told me that!
“I’m so proud of you, Rin. So fucking proud’!”, he said, tears standing in his eyes as he took both my hands in his.
“Thank you, Sesshomaru. For everything.”, I said, standing on tiptoe to place a kiss on his cheek. I felt the gentle pressure of his hand at the small of my back and sighed. This was as close to perfect as it could get. I was sure.
I was wrong.
