One Over the Other

Chapter 4: Attempt At A New Start





Two months had passed since Kagome moved in with her father and stepmother and she was the happiest she’d been in a long time. She was softening up a bit, so that she wasn’t so abrasive. Souta told all his friends in school about her and to Kagome, Jenny, and her fathers’ surprise used her as his show and tell at school. Inuyasha hadn’t come back to her father’s house and she hadn’t seen Sesshomaru since she chased Inuyasha that day. She and Jesse were even seen together frequently now.



"Souta come on Rin-chan and Sango-chan are waiting on us."



"Coming."



Souta ran down the steps and out the door into Rin’s arms smiling. They started walking down the street toward the boy Bankotsu’s house laughing and talking. He was Kagome’s age but his girlfriend Kagura had brought her younger sister Kanna and asked that Kagome bring Souta. Ringing the doorbell Inuyasha opened the door laughing. Since he and Kagome had made up the day after she chased him they’d started hanging out as friends.



"Hey Kags, San, squirts."



Rin and Souta smirked before sliding pass him, Rin to talk to Inuyasha’s best friends Kouga and Miroku and Souta in search of Kanna. Sango and Kagome just shook their heads laughing. After, closing the door Inuyasha pulled Kagome to the side, his smile dropping.



"Kags Sesshomaru and his new girlfriend Yura are coming to see Bankotsu. But, I don’t know when."



"Thanks for the heads up Inu, but I’m fine. If I can’t deal I’ll take the kids down to my house for cake. Oh, Jenny made you a chocolate cake."



Kagome smiled when Inuyasha’s eyes lit up like Christmas was early.



"If you leave I’ll go with you!"



"Deal."



"Hey Inu return my girlfriend."



Sango yelled from her place between her twin brother Kohaku and Rin. Inu stuck his tongue out and pulled Kagome close.



"No, she’s mine."



Kagome laughed and danced over to Sango giving her a light kiss. Miroku and Kouga whistled and Sango flipped them off continuing to kiss Kagome.



"A perv and a lech, how lucky are we to have them in our little group?"



Inuyasha scoffed jokingly.



"Least we know they can take a beating."



Moving out into the backyard they removed all, but their bathing suits and trunks and jumped into the pool. The outside lights flickered on just as the sun finally set. Kagome seeing Souta and Kanna fast asleep on a pool side chair climbed out the pool.



"Guys, I’m gonna take Souta and Kanna to sleep in my room, I’ll be back. Inu will you carry Kanna?"



Inuyasha climbed out the pool and dried off, before picking Kanna up and following Kagome. As they were nearing the front door it opened and in stepped a girl Kagome didn’t know and Sesshomaru.



"Excuse us please."



Sesshomaru stared at her a moment before moving aside. Kagome and Inuyasha still dressed in only their swimsuits walked quietly down the street. Jenny was just coming home with Koichi and Kohana when they walked up.



"Okaa-san, otousan, if you guys take Souta and Kanna and let them sleep in my room, I’ll take Kohana."



Jenny looked a little worried.



"Are you sure she’s been very sick lately?"



Kagome nodded smiling brightly.



"I know you guys want her immune system to build up a resistance, but if anything goes wrong I’ll heal her immediately and bring her home. Promise."



Reassured they nodded and switched off children. Walking back toward Bankotsu’s house with Kohana’s baby bag over her shoulder, Kagome smiled. Inuyasha rubbed her back gently.



"You’d have been a great mom, Kags."



Kagome nodded not trusting her voice for a moment.



"Thanks Inu."



Her voice was quiet, but held a small smile. Opening the door they returned to the backyard. Settling on one of the lounge chairs Kagome focused her attention on the now awake Kohana. She didn’t notice that not only were her friends watching her but Sesshomaru as well. Kohana’s smiles, spit bubbles, and laughs brought Kagome great joy and made the part of her heart that still ached, stop hurting quite so much.



"Come on Kags we should head down to the Manor with the others."



Nodding Kagome let Inuyasha guide her as she continued to play with Kohana. Feeling eyes on her from the right Kagome looked over to see Sesshomaru watching her with Kohana. Stopping she walked over to him saying hello to Yura before speaking to him.



"How’ve you been?"



"Fine. Who is the pup?"



"My little sister Kohana. Want to hold her a moment?"



He nodded slowly and Kagome positioned his arms before sliding Kohana into them. His eyes widened at how small and fragile she was. He couldn’t even feel her in his arms she was so light. Inuyasha watched them for a few moments before clearing his throat.



"Come on Kags, we better catch up to the others."



Kagome nodded and gently scooped Kohana out of Sesshomaru’s arms. Looking up at him she gave a sad smile.



"It was a girl."



Sesshomaru nodded mutely and Kagome and Inuyasha left, Inuyasha carrying their clothes. Yura watched the whole exchange in confusion.



"Who is she, Sessho?"



"Do not call me that. She is none of your concern."



He turned an took his drink from the counter and downed it.



"Go home Yura and do not call me anymore."



"But Sessho?"



"It’s over leave me."



Yura crying ran from the house. Bankotsu sat another drink in front of him.



"What the hell was that?"



"That was Kagome."



"I know who she is...damn didn’t think you meant that Kagome. She’s a hot piece of ass, the hell you break up with her for?"



Sesshomaru downed his drink and then another.



"She got pregnant and things went down hill from there."



Bankotsu made himself a drink and took a sip.



"Was that your kid?"



Sesshomaru raised an eyebrow.



"You ask to many questions."



"I got questions you got answers, give em up."



"No, that’s her baby sister."



"Well I’m late getting’ to your house, so come on."



Sesshomaru resisted the urge to roll his eyes and left when Bankotsu went upstairs to get something. Kagome noticed Kohana had fallen asleep and told everyone. All of them could see how happy she was caring for Kohana and those that knew the story felt pity well in their chest.



"Kags, you playin’ truth or dare?"



"But Ban’s not here yet."



"Yes, I am and I talked Sesshomaru into joining us."



Kagome shook her head.



"Then lets get started."



Forming a circle Sango offered to start the game and chose Kouga first.



"Truth or dare perv?"



"Truth."



"Why are you such a perv?"



Kouga smirked.



"The female body calls to me. Inuyasha truth or dare?"



"Truth."



"Would it bother you if Rin dated myself or Bankotsu?’"



"HELL YEAH, I’d kick both your asses."



"Just wanted to know."



Kohaku, truth or dare?



"Dare."



"I dare you to tongue kiss the hell outta Kagura."



Kohaku blushed lightly but reached over and pulled Kagura into his lap and kissed her lips gently at first then deepened it into one hellified tongue kiss. When he finally released Kagura her eyes were wide and she was shocked as hell just like everyone else in the room. Never had they seen Kohaku so assertive. He smirked a little and turned to face Kagome.



"Kags, truth or dare?"



"Truth."



"Why are you always so sad when we go out and see pregnant women or women with their babies?"



Kagome brushed her finger over Kohana’s cheek.



"I was pregnant about a year and a half ago and three weeks before I was due to give birth me and Sango were in a car accident. I lost my baby and even when they let me hold her dead little body in the hospital as I lay there covered in cuts and blood she as the prettiest little girl I’d ever seen. She looked just like her father, but she had my eyes from what the doctor told me before they took her away?"



The room was silent and still, all eyes focused on her.



"I think I’m gonna go. I’ll see you guys tomorrow."



No one noticed when Sesshomaru slipped out of the room a moment before Kagome let the room. When she closed the door to the room he touched her shoulder lightly.



"Can we talk?"



Kagome nodded and followed him into his room, quietly. Sitting on the edge of his bed Kagome was silent.



"I apologize Kagome for all that happened after you got pregnant."



Kohana squirmed and Kagome laid her on the bed and rubbed her back. Seeing she was sleeping peacefully again she turned back to face Sesshomaru.



"I hate you Sesshomaru. You made me fall in love with you and then you couldn’t be consistent. You stopped being the boy I loved and became this cold shell, and then you’d change again and be so caring and attentive. I just wanted you to be the boy I loved again. Why’d you change into that cold shell? Did you not want me anymore?"



Sesshomaru sighed audibly; Kagome was one of the few people he’d ever explain himself to.



"I was scared of the pup growing within you. Everything was going to change and I would be a father. I stopped knowing what to say to you or around you."



"Did you not want me anymore?"



"I wanted you, but I couldn’t admit it then."



"What about now?"



Standing Kagome walked over to, him her breasts almost touching his chest.



"Nothing has changed."



Kagome leaned against him her eyes closed and her arms loosely

around his waist.



"It still hurts."



~A Month Later~



Sango had noticed that Kagome and Sesshomaru were spending more and more time together. She knew Kagome wasn’t cheating on her, but she could see the obvious affection they held for one another too. Picking up her phone she called Kagome, knowing she was about to meet up with Sesshomaru.



"Hey baby."



"Hey?"



"What’s wrong San?"



"I love you dearly Kags as both a friend and a girlfriend. But I think we should see other people. I know you love me but you love Sesshomaru more and I understand."



"...We’re still friends?"



"Of course."



"I’m sorry Sango."



"Don’t be you can’t help who you love."



"Are we still having girls night with the others?"



"Yup. See you there."



"Definitely."



Kagome felt bad for Sango but she couldn’t help being a little happy. It was then that Sesshomaru knocked on the door. Leaving with him she informed him of Sango’s decision. He was holding her hand already and intertwined their fingers when she finished. Kagome smiled and squeezed gently. Rin slipped out of the house and down to Bankotsu’s house concealing her scent the entire way. Bankotsu opened the door and was surprised to see Rin there.



"Hey Rin. What do you need?"



Rin glanced up at him with a somewhat heated look and slipped inside. Bankotsu closed the door and turned noticing she was walking up the stairs and followed silently. When he reached his door and opened it, it was to see Rin standing in a tube top that only covered her breasts and a pair of thong underwear, both black in color.



"Ri-"



She pressed her fingers to his lips closed his door and led him to his bed. Bankotsu to shocked to think properly let her push him down on his bed. Climbing onto his lap Rin straddled him and kissed him gently smiling when he kissed her back. Bankotsu placed his hands on her hips and squeezed lightly.



"Your brother’s gonna kill me."



Then before she could comment he kissed her and rolled so she was beneath him. Kagome squealed when Souta started tickling her as her wake up call and noticed that Sesshomaru was waiting in the hall. Souta ran out of her room laughing as Sesshomaru walked in. He closed the door and saw Kagome calming a fussy Kohana.



"She slept in here with me last night, dad and mom went out."



He nodded amazed at how easily she could slip into mother mode. He settled on the other side of her bed and watched her. Kagome patiently let Kohana squirm and twist until she was comfortable. Humming a soft tune while feeding her the rest of her bottle from the night before. Finished feeding her Kagome burped her and laid her down on her chest when she saw she was again falling asleep.



"How do you know what to do?"



Kagome looked over at him and smiled, pointing to a bookshelf on his side of her bed. On it were several books on pregnancy, child-development, baby names, and a few other topics.



"I should have known, what are you doing tonight?"



Kagome shook her head.



"I’ll have everything dropped off to you by 5, be ready by 7."



Kagome’s curiosity was peaked.



"For what?"



"Unfortunately, my father’s 25th Annual Business Ball. I’m required to be there and I was hoping you’d be my date."



He said it like it was obvious. She hadn’t been to any of Touga’s balls since the first year she’d been dating Inuyasha (their freshman year).



"Again unfortunately your mother is Touga’s date as Izayoi is ‘sick’."



Kagome shook her head in sadness.



"Does she know?"



"No, father has forbidden us to tell her."



Kagome’s eyes narrowed in anger.



"He can’t forbid me to do anything and I’m going to tell her she deserves to know."



A look of relief entered Sesshomaru’s eyes.



"I’ll inform Inuyasha. So you will accompany me?"



Kagome smiled nodding.



"Good."



Koichi knocked on Kagome’s door before poking his head inside. Spotting Kohana fast asleep on Kagome’s chest, he smiled and strolled over and gently as possible picked her up.



"How was she last night?"



"Fine her temperature went up a little bit and she had diaherra, but after her medicine kicked in she was ok. A little fussy but ok."



Koichi nodded and left reopening the door a moment later.



"Don’t think we forgot July 22. Jenny’s planning a surprise party for you so act surprised."



Kagome laughed, while nodding her head and he left again.



"Get out so I can get dressed."



Sesshomaru raised an eyebrow.



"I’ve seen you naked already."



He pulled her covers down revealing her black sports bra. Kagome swatted at his hand laughing and got out of bed revealing her black boyshorts. Walking into her closet Kagome came out dressed in black low-rise jeans and a black vest with a short-sleeved white t-shirt underneath. In her hand were a pair of black and white converses.



"Let’s go out somewhere today?"



"Where did you have in mind?"



By the time Sesshomaru and Kagome got to the Manor it was to see Rin screaming and crying while Inuyasha and Bankotsu fought. Kagome hurried to Rin’s side asking her what happened. Hearing the story of Rin’s late night escapades with Bankotsu for the last week and a half and she sighed. Muttering a quick chant while moving her fingers into various symbols, with practiced ease she cast two containment spells. Both Inuyasha and Bankotsu were yanked apart about three yards and held there by glowing chains. Rin sobbing ran to Bankotsu’s side sobbing into his chest as he held her and muttered in her ear. Inuyasha snarled at the picture they made as Kagome walked over to him.



"Inu, you need to calm down, Rin is an adult now. Her actions with Bankotsu are between them."



"SHE’S MY LITTLE SISTER, SHE’S TO YOUNG TO BE HAVIN’ SEX."



Kagome raised an eyebrow in question, imitating Sesshomaru.



"How old were you when you first had sex?"



"THAT’S NOT THE POINT."



Kagome laughed while shaking her head.



"Inuyasha, Rin will be 19 in three weeks time, let her live her own life. Besides look at her right now. She loves him Inu and the more you fight him, the more you’re pushing her away. Tonight is your father’s ball, she’ll bring him as her date if she comes and if we both crash the ball who will be able to claim innocence?"



"What do you have planned Kags?"



"I’ll be arriving late with Izayoi is all."



"But moms sick beca..."

He stopped mid sentence before just nodding in acceptance.



"Thanks Kags."



Looking mentally exhausted Inuyasha went inside behind Sesshomaru. Kagome turned to Rin and Bankotsu and shook her head.



"I hope you two know what your doing."



Then she walked home leaving her things in Sesshomaru’s car without thinking.
