Part IV

"Well, how is she?" asked Grandpa when Miss Higurashi came out of his grand-daughter's bedroom. Of course she wasn't fine, but he was wondering how she was coping with what had happened to her.

"She's confused, and angry, and scared, as about any of us would be if what had happened to her had happened to us. I can't tell whether or not she'll recover, but we'll certainly do our best to see that she does." said mom in a low voice.

"The authorities are on their way over. I think it will be too early to let them talk to Kagome. We'd better handle this ourselves." said grandpa, heading for the front door.

"I agree. It will be difficult to stand up under their scrutiny after seeing my daughter in this condition, but I think I'll be able to bear through." agreed Miss Higurashi, before joining grandpa at the front door.

A few minutes later, a squad car pulled up to the base of the stairs leading up to the shrine. Two uniformed police officers appeared, one carrying a notepad, and together they ascended the stairway.

When they reached top, they found Miss Higurashi, and grandpa waiting for them. The two of them introduced themselves.

"Good afternoon. I'm Lieutenant Sakanami, and this is my partner, deputy Saji. We're here to investigate the report of a rape on a young schoolgirl. I take it your her mother and grandfather." said the more senior looking of the two officers.

"Yes, I'm Miss Suji Higurashi, and the man behind me is Mr. Sako Higurashi." responded Miss Higurashi simply.

"Where is the victim currently?" spoke up the deputy officer.

"My daughter, Kagome Higurashi, she is sleeping and recuperating in her room. I thought it would be best if we answered any questions that you might have." replied Mrs. Suji.

"Very well then. We'll start off with the basics. When and what time did this attack occur?" asked officer Sakanami, giving the notepad to the deputy to copy down her answers.

"The attack, as recounted by my daughter, took place about five minutes after the final bell, which would have been at 2:15 PM. As for where, she told me it occured in the boy's locker room." recounted Miss Higurashi.

"Did she say what she was doing in the boy's locker room?" interjected the deputy officer.

"She was dragged there by her assailants, from the main hallway." answered Miss Higurashi with a little huffiness in her voice.

"Were there any witnesses to this attack?" asked the senior officer.

"None in the hallway, according to her. And she didn't remember seeing anyone else in the locker room." she replied.

"How many assailants were there?" questioned the officer.

"According to my daughter's memory, there were four initially, maybe more after they dragged her into the locker room. And she told me they were wearing the uniforms of high school juniors." added Miss Higurashi.

"Ok. Can you recount for us how your daughter described the attack?" asked the senior officer. The deputy officer gave his hand a quick shake, getting ready for some serious speed writing if necessary.

"She said that four men confronted her in the hallway, and dragged her into the locker room against her will. They forced her down onto a bench. She tried to fight back, clawing, kicking, but they beat her, before they..." Miss Higurashi stopped, gulped, wiped the beginnings of a tear away from her cheek before continuing.

"Please ma'am, take your time." said the senior officer.

"They tore her clothes off, and she said that she could feel their hands running all over her body. One of them straddled her and began, she said it felt like being hit with a hammer over and over again to her stomach and chest. She went out. When she awoke, they were all gone. She found some spare clothes, and managed to make it home ok." recounted Miss Higurashi.

"Okay, we'll take the investigation from here. It sounds like your daughter needs to go to the hospital." said the senior officer.

"Yes, an ambulance is on the way. I just wanted to calm her down some before they arrived." replied Miss Higurashi.

"Very well then. We'll run down some leads, and let you know if anything pops up. In the meantime, here is our contact information, should you need anything or remember anything else." said the senior officer.

Grandpa stepped forward to take the card from him, and the two officers nodded their heads, before turning and leaving the way they had come.

Miss Higurashi put her hand over her eyes and began to weep, with grandpa coming over to put his arm around her.

Watching from her bedroom window, Kagome herself was crying. One thing kept circulating through her head, one name, one person, one loved one.
