Author Note: I found this story in MM.org (thanks to my friend Ketcham ^_^), it's called Whispered Voices from Sorrows Tenshi. So I started to read it... It's a good story though somehow it seems kinda familiar to me... Who knows, maybe it's just me. I think you should read it, and maybe leave a review to let her know what you think of it... Chapter 37: He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not, He L...
Somewhere between the time Kohaku dropped me off at home after our date that night and walking into my room to see my keyboard lying scattered across the bedroom floor - my newfound sense of lightheartedness simply melted away. One look at the mess - and everything I'd seen in bold print and bright color splashed across my computer screen earlier - came running full force right back into my gut. I sank down on my bed, covering my face with my hands and tried my best to control the emotions that were raging deep within me.
Why was everything always so damned complicated?
Heaving a sigh, I slid to my knees on the carpeted floor and started picking up the keys that had bounced off when I'd attacked my computer keyboard in a fit of rage. I'd scooped up a handful when my mobile chirped and thinking it was Kohaku calling to wish me goodnight once he'd returned safely home, I popped it open and answered the call, depositing the loose keys atop my desk in a pile.
"Still wanting me?", I purred into the phone and then giggled as I imagined the look on his handsome face.
Dead silence greeted me from the opposite end of the phone and confused, I brought the phone down so I could take a peek at my caller ID. God knew that if Hitomi had phoned and caught me talking that way, I'd NEVER live it down, no mr her her apologies from several nights before. I was sure some things were just TOO juicy not to share with half the teen population in our town.
"Oh God!", I moaned as SESSHOMARU flashed almost angrily back in my face.
"RIN!", I could hear him literally screaming my name from where I held the phone cradled in both my hands, simply staring at it. "GODDAMNIT!"
I lifted the phone to my ear in time to hear him utter a few more choice words for my listening pleasure before clearing my throat to let him know I was at least on the line.
"RIN!", he shouted once more, even louder, if that were possible.
"Don't you scream at me, Sesshomaru Hara.", I said softly. I was more than surprised that I'd discovered some hidden source of control and grasping it firmly by the horns, I held on tight.
"I'll scream at you if I want!", he shouted, regardless.
Breathe in, breathe out. Breathe in, breathe out. It was as if I could see things crystal clear for once.
"Sesshomaru. If you yell at me any more, I'm going to hang up on you.", I said just as softly as I had before.
"You will NOT hang up on me!", he said before bursting into brash, drunken laughter.
"Are you drunk?", I asked, sure that he WAS beyond any doubt now. His speech was slurred, his breathing heavy, his voice loud and his manner HORRID!
"Fuck!", he laughed, dropping the phone with a loud thump. I heard him cursing under his breath as he fumbled for it and grunting, come back on the line. "RIN! You better not leave me! Do you hear me?", he shouted.
"Sesshomaru, where ARE you?", I asked.
"Hotel bar.", he answered, a hiccup escaping him.
"Where's InuYasha?", I asked.
"Why the hell do you want InuYasha? InuYasha's not your boyfriend! Just who IS your boyfriend? Wait a fucking minute - what the hell did you just say when you answered the call??" he cried.
"What call?", I asked.
"THIS call... MY CALL!", he was becoming more agitated as the conversation wore on.
"I don't remember!", I said and truly, I didn't. He had me so upset, worried and confused now that I didn't know which way was up much less what I'd said not a minute before.
"YOU thought it was HIM calling, didn't you?", he accused, his voice bordering on a whine.
"Sesshomaru? Are you alone right now?", I ventured. God, how I hoped she wasn't there. God how I wanted him to be aching for ME, needing ME!
"Well... YEAH! Of course! Aren't I always?", he asked.
My heart dropped to my stomach at the lonely sound of his voice and I closed my eyes, leaning back against the bed, unsure what to say to him or what he needed from me.
"Sesshomaru?", I said, just to break the silence. I was afraid he'd passed out or worse and I knew that if that happened, I'd go crazy trying to find out if he was OK or not later.
"Rin Matsumoto... Hara.", he chuckled sexily and a shiver worked its way down my spine. How fair was this? How fair to either of us? I swallowed past a lump in my throat and forced myself to remain calm and centered. Damn! But it was near to impossible!
"Walk out of that bar, Sesshomaru.", I said softly.
"Where you want me to go?", he whispered dramatically and again, my heart turned over at the sound of pain in his voice.
"To your room. Is InuYasha around?", I asked.
"Fuck - YES! Why don't you tell him to leave me `lone!? ...sees too fucking much!", he grumbled as he made what sounded like a half assed attempt to cover the mouth piece and shout some abuse InuYasha's way.
"Sesshomaru! Let me speak to InuYasha!", I shouted, hoping he could hear me.
"What did you say, Rin?", he mumbled after a moment.
"InuYasha. Let me speak to him a second.", I said.
"NO.", he grumbled. "You don't need to speak to InuYasha. He's not my babysitter!", he argued. "YOU'RE NOT MY BABBY SITTER!", he screamed presumably toward poor InuYasha.
"Sesshomaru. If you don't let me speak to InuYasha right NOW, I'm going to have to let you go.", I said, holding my breath as I waited for the inevitable clicking sound of him ending the call himself.
"Rin?", InuYasha's voice came across the line and relief surged through me like a tidal wave.
"InuYasha? Is he OK?", I asked, gripping the phone in my hand.
"You heard him, didn't you?", he asked. "No, he's not. I'm sorry I didn't get the phone or get him to bed before he called to bother you.", he apologized.
"No, no... please! Sesshomaru knows he can call me anytime he needs to, InuYasha. I'd be very upset with him if he didn't!", I assured him.
"But not this way, Rin... not like this. He'll go absolutely mad once he realizes what he's done. He has nothing but the best to say about you, worries about you and all.", he said.
"Where is he now?", I asked, fighting the ache in my belly.
"Asleep. Head down on the bar.", InuYasha said. "Damned bitch...", he muttered.
"InuYasha? Did she... did she hurt him somehow?", I asked, wondering where my courage had come from. Maybe it was simply my worry over Sesshomaru. Whatever it was, I wasn't going to back down now. He was mine, no matter that he refused to accept it, and I had an obligation to him.
"Rin...", InuYasha's voice faltered over the line.
"Just tell me. I know he's supposed to keep her a secret, he's just not doing a very good job anymore.", I said.
Clearing his throat, he simply said. "Yes".
I clenched my hand into a fist and beat the floor with it just like I wished I could beat a bit of common sense into Sesshomaru. WHAT could I do? He'd never listen to me! Hell, he wouldn't listen to anybody!
"Rin? I should get him up to bed. We have to be up very early for a meeting in the morning. Don't know how he'll get through it but somehow... you know, the show must go on...", he said.
"Take care of him, InuYasha. He's special to me.", I said.
"I will, sweetheart. Goodnight.", he said and with a whispered goodnight of my own, I ended the call.
