Epilogue (part 5)

DISCLAIMER: I DO NOT OWN INUYASHA AND CO., NOR DO I MAKE MONEY FROM THIS.

AN: These epilogues are being posted in parts because my son managed to lose my original doc. I was three quarters of the way through and poof, it was no more. Therefore, to avoid that problem I am going to post the parts as they get finished. When I am done with all them, I will probably go through and condense them down to one chapter. Again, thank you for reading this story, and dealing with my method of posting.

Epilogue (part 5)

The pack was whole, but this was not to last for long.

The happiness had been felt by all, and though there had been minor squabbles, nothing seemed to be able to penetrate the strength of the West. Yet as time always manages to do, some bonds strengthen while others weaken. The pain that would descend on the alpha and his mate would take centuries to heal.

Maybe the tragedy could have been foreseen. If Masumi’s absence had been detected sooner, it might have been forestalled. All the previous unknown failures weighed heavily on a mother’s heart. Unseeing eyes allowed the heat of the funeral prier to dry them, never once blinking.

Masumi’s wanderlust had been seen as a trait that she had garnered from her father and uncle. The eldest daughter of the West had never spoken to others of the call she often felt on her soul, pulling her somewhere to the north. As the years passed, the young female began to realize that there was something dark festering within her.

Kagome stood stalk still next to her mate as neither one knew how to comfort the other in the face of losing a pup. The small immortal human could not stop the torrent of guilt as she recalled all the times she had looked upon her eldest only to catch the glimpse of a haunted soul. Masumi had been isolated within her own pack, and none of them had taken the time to really notice.

Masumi had died upholding the beliefs that her mother had instilled. In one of her meandering ventures north, she had come across the last of the dragons wreaking havoc on a small village. It had been her mother’s voice that spurred her into defending the panic-rending peasants.

It was when the dragon lay dead and Masumi heavily wounded that the villagers turned on their savior. The pain and the horror that they had witnessed needed a sacrifice so that the night did not seem so foreboding. The great silver inu-youkai never lashed back at her attackers.

What stayed her hand would never be known. Too late had Sesshoumaru and Kagome come upon their daughter for the might of Tensaiga to work. The great sword hung with dead weight from its master’s hip. The impotence he felt at that moment fueled the rage of his beast.

The village never stood a chance against the vengeance of the tai-youkai of the West. Within a half an hour of their arrival, the pristine attire of Sesshoumaru hung heavily with the blood of those who wronged his pack, his daughter.

Only three remained breathing in the chaotic ruins of the human settlement; a grieving inu-youkai, a heartbroken mother, and pitiful, sobbing, a bruised child collapsed over the body of a long cold Masumi. The child would not be forsaken.

The guilt of that night would plague the former miko for many reasons. The first and foremost was the loss of her daughter, but another would be that she never once spoke up to defend the villagers. She had told her children never walk the path of vengeance, but then she allowed the one that held her very soul to walk it. Her heart did not truly mourn for those that had turned on their savior in their fear, but it mourned for the weight that now rested on her mate’s shoulders.

Peace was a precarious balancing act between the humans and youkai, and his bloodlust had definitely done nothing to ensure that balance.

All that was left were the smoldering embers, and it was at this time that Kagome allowed the tears to fall. She had failed, and she had failed many. Turning to her mate, her love, she searched for the words to break the silence.

As though he sensed her floundering, he cupped her face and spoke, “This Sesshoumaru does not apologize. Come who may, we will stand strong against them, and our daughter’s memory will be carried on for many centuries to come in our hearts.”

The tears flowed more fiercely. “I-“

A clawed finger sealed her lips before she could say anything else. Thin lips descended upon her brow as she was wrapped into her mate’s embrace, his strength. His words were whispered into midnight tresses.

“This is life. We cannot change the past, however together we are strong enough to keeping moving forward.” She sobbed harder into his broad chest. “Stay with this Sesshoumaru, Kagome.”

At his statement, she pushed back from his warmth to stare into his amber eyes. There was fear hidden deep within their depths. She knew then what he feared.

“Sesshoumaru, I can never be lost in the sea of insanity with you as my anchor. You are my very soul. To stay by your side, I would endure the pain of a thousand lifetimes if not more.”

The kiss clearly spoke of the things that he would never be able to voice. In the middle of their pain, one truth shone as a divining light. They had each other. Time would pass, but they would always have their hard forged bonds.
