Epilogue (part 4)
The trees were thinning as they ran towards the stronghold of the West. Years had passed since his bare feet had felt this soil. In his grief, he had abandoned Kagome for longer than most humans’ life span. It had been years.
Feeling the one next to him falter as she took in the majesty of the West Citadel, he knew that he could stay away no longer. It had been years, and the pack had grown. Now was the time for all the members to be acquainted.

Kagome had been talking with Michi when the commotion arose though she never heard it herself. In fact, she never would have known there was a problem if she had been alone. However, she clued into Michi’s slightly tensing posture, and then immediately felt out the entire area to understand what had put her companion on edge.
It was a blinding smile that graced her features as she recognized the long missed aura of a certain hanyou. He had come home. With all the speed that her attire would allow her, Kagome raced down to the gates.
Before her arrival, she and Michi could hear the gruff voice of the second born son of the great and terrible Inu no Taisho, and it seemed that his years of travel had taught him even more interesting expletives. Inuyasha would never allow the currents of time to change him.
The seventy-year absence had made the guards forget who the Regent of the West was though, in their defense, it did not help that Inuyasha was accompanied by an ookami youkai. The West had not been able to establish sound relations with the wolves of the eastern and northern mountain ranges, and as such all wolves were to be distrusted on sight.
In the rising tide of humanity, many of the more refined youkai began to see the threat that allowing instincts to run wild truly held. Therefore, any group that allowed instincts to rule them were not easily trusted. There had also been added animosity between the wolves and dogs when a strong alliance was made between the inu and kitsune youkai.
Tadashi had found his calling in diplomacy by accident. He had been playing childish pranks on villagers, when he found himself caught under a boulder. The vixen had used the smallest of pebbles to contain the overly zealous dog. It was meant to cut at his pride to be caught in a trap that even the youngest of kits could escape. What the female did not know, was that this dog had years of practice escaping from these predicaments.
Villagers forgotten, the chase was on. Short months later, the West found an alliance to the kitsune when one of its generals had mated one of the most well acclaimed tricksters among the foxes. Both sides benefited immensely, however, there were those outside of the allies that looked upon it with jealousy. It had caused strain in other dealings for the last century.
“Stand down to your Regent.” Kagome’s voice rang out with the authority that she had learned by mimicking her mate.
Inuyasha’s anger quickly dissipated at the sight of his long time friend. He flashed her a lopsided grin as he said, “Feh, I could have kicked these pansies asses without even breaking a sweat.”
She shook her head while sharing a glance with Michi. Her mate was on a fast approach to their location as well. Perhaps she should reprimand the hanyou before her alpha decided that public demonstrations in etiquette were in order.
“While I do not doubt your need to brandish your ‘large sword,’” Kagome began, “I do not think that this is the proper time or place.” Smiling at the female standing behind Inuyasha, Kagome continued, “Why do I get the strange feeling that in all this time you have been gone that you have been visiting Kouga?”
“Feh.”
“Welcome back, little brother.” The deep baritone of the supreme alpha washed over all present. “Though this Sesshoumaru understands that you may have lost all civility in your wanderings, the entryway is not the proper place for reunions. Take your mate, and refresh before the evening meal. There is much to be discussed.”
Sesshoumaru turned on heels and left, leaving his gapping mate to regain her composure alone. Why was her life full of arrogant dogs?

Dinner had been tense and quiet. Kagome had lost tract of the number of times she had seen Inuyasha’s ears twitch in anxiety. It seemed that all were waiting for her mate to begin. Sending her Sesshoumaru impatient glares, the stoic inu resigned himself to giving into her curiosity.
“You will inform this Sesshoumaru why you felt the need to mate a pup without even referring to your alpha first.”
The statement was met by many different reactions, but the most noticeable were those of Inuyasha and his mate, Kazumi. The black-haired, green-eyed female growled viciously while her muscles tensed in anticipation of attack. Inuyasha took an entirely different approach. Yes, he attacked, but not physically.
“Oy, she ain’t no pup, and at least I took the honorable path.” When his claim was met with a raised brow from his brother, the hanyou explained further. “Unlike some here,” his eyes bore into Michi, “I gained approval from her alpha before I began courting her. I did not sneak around having a supposed ‘secret’ affair under my alpha’s nose.”
Sesshoumaru just closed his eyes to the antics of his brother. It was Kagome that took up the role of appeaser.
“Inuyasha, there is a difference between being ‘sneaky’ and being ‘discrete.’ However, her actions are not for you to judge. What is of importance here is that you have formed an alliance between the West and her clan without ever involving any of your pack. Do you truly believe that you mean so little to any us that we would not take offensive to such a blatant slight?”
Ears pinned to his head, Inuyasha knew better than to respond. However, the same was not true of his young mate.
“Who are any of you to question him? And, I am not a pup for I have already reached my fiftieth year.”
Michi could no longer hold her tongue. “We are his pack,” she bellowed. “I do not know what rank you presume yourself to be among your cave dwelling kin, but now you are sitting in the private dining area of Sesshoumaru-sama, tai-youkai of the West! So, in all of your maturity of fifty years I suggest that you find a way to silence your tongue before you dig your own mate’s funeral.”
With all the maturity that Kazumi had, she did not back down. “I am Kazumi, daughter of Kouga, the prince of the Eastern Wolf Tribe! I do not-“
Her rant was cut short by the burst of hysterical laughter coming from Kagome. For some reason her uncontrolled cackles lessened the ominous mood of the entire room. She laughed and wiped the tears from her face as all stared at her.
When she finally regained control of herself enough to talk, she said, “Oh Inuyasha, for all the years that you berated Miroku for being a pervert. This truly is priceless. You turn out to be an even larger cradle robber, and to add to it, you stole from Kouga’s pack. I believe that you have given our dear departed friend more than enough reason to laugh through the next several life times.”
Kagome smiled warmly at her long missed brother and his new mate. “I am sure that you will make a wonderful addition to this great pack, Kazumi. It is good to see that Inuyasha has chosen a female that will not be cowed by his overly abrasive personality.”
She turned to her mate and bared her neck. As he leaned in to brush her cheek with his own, she trailed tiny kisses along his jaw line. Usually their affection was not displayed so openly, but the only beings within the room where pack making it so that many of the strict rules of behavior could be lax.
When she had a mate that was growling softly in contentment, Kagome ventured, “Sesshoumaru-sama, I believe that Inuyasha’s pride has already been wounded enough by having to grovel in front of Kouga. When it comes time to remind him of the importance of pack, I simply ask that you remember this.”
The pack was whole once again, and this time with more members than it had before.
