Epilogue (part 1)

DISCLAIMER: I DO NOT OWN INUYASHA AND CO, NOR DO I MAKE MONEY FROM THIS.

AN: Okay, I had way more written and then lost it due to a magic move by my two year old. My thought is that I am going to post these little snippets of time as I write them and then when I am completely finished I will combine the entire epilogue into one chapter.

Thank you to all who voted for this story in the Dokuga quarterly awards where this story won first place in the Dark Fic category. Also, to those who voted for it in the IYFG where it placed second in the Best Action category for their fourth quarter awards.

Epilogue (part 1)

She walked down the hallway staring into the face of her small bundle. It had been over fifty years since the last time she had cradled one so small to her chest. The joy of this new life weighed heavy with loss discovered just days after his birth.

Kagome sighed softly while she willed the tears not to fall. She had to remind herself that she was no longer human, but her fate did not absolve her friends of their humanity. Miroku had been full of life all the way up to his death a few months prior. He had lived well and long, cherishing those around him and sharing his wisdom with those who would listen. His death had hit her hard. Locking herself in the shared chambers of her and her mate, Kagome had cried a river.

Sesshoumaru had allowed her mourning until he became worried for her health and the subsequent health of the growing pup within her womb. This had been the first time that the great tai-youkai had felt comfortable with allowing his mate to carry again. Unrest within the lands and his court had made it so that Sesshoumaru would not risk another fiasco, like the one that his mother had caused, by pupping his Kagome before he was sure of loyalty.

Their daughters had been Kagome’s focus and she was amazed at how quickly they grew, within twenty years they had looked grown. However, it was then that she was enlightened on youkai maturation. The body grew quickly, but the mind was slow that was why youkai were not considered grown until they had reached their hundredth year or so. It was around this time that a youkai would grow beyond their rash stage and think in a more tempered manner. None could explain why there was such a long ‘adolescent’ phase, but the sad fact that this was when most youkai met their demise.

Now, one week after the birth of their son, Osamu heir to the West, Kagome was still reeling from news brought by Ichiro and Kirara. Rin. Rin was no more. Rin’s eldest child had brought the news that in last weeks of her life she seemed to just be waiting for news that her Sesshoumaru-sama’s next pup had been born healthy. Ichiro had stated that his mother was looking forward to once again being by her husband side.

Kagome’s great pillar of strength had been so shaken by his ward’s passing that she had not seen him in the last two days. The stoic dog had thrown himself into the mundane details of running his lands. Inuyasha was not here for her to turn to, for the hanyou had fled the Citadel when they had received word of Miroku’s passing. They would hear tales of the silver-haired hanyou saving village after village from rogue and lower level demons. Really, Kagome suspected that her dog-eared friend was trying to redeem himself from some self-perceived failure at the loss of one his first true friends.

The listless steps had taken her to the door outside of his study. His aura caressed against her and she no longer cared if she was interrupting some important meeting. Before she could knock, his rich baritone bid her to enter.

Not paying attention to any others within the room, her tear rimmed eyes focused solely on her angle in white. Her voices was coarse with days of none use. “Is this my fate?” A raised brow was the only indication of his perplexity. “Is this my fate, to outlive all that I care for until, in the end it is only I and eternity?”

Snarling orders for all in the room to leave, Sesshoumaru moved in a flurry of silk to pull his mate to him. Burying his nose into her hair, he said, “There is no force great enough to pull this Sesshoumaru from you. Nothing will part us.”

“But you shut me out from your pain, and I used to be human. Then the Kami decided that I would be immortal. Youkai are long lived, but are they immortal? Do I have to face eternity by myself? Already, there have been so many that I have lost to time. Will I live so long that my memories fade? Is becoming a shell a better fate than what the Kami originally intend?”

Rumbling softly within his chest, he yearned to sooth his distraught mate. “We are pack.”

Kagome stiffened for a moment. Yes, they were pack and she knew how deeply that bond bound her soul to his. Her sadness and insecurities eased under the one statement. They were pack.
