A Life Unlived

Chapter Three


Kurama and Yusuke walked into Koenma's office, both with confused and worried looks on their faces. Kurama wasn't happy about the information he and Yusuke had found out. There had only been one thing found on the girl named Kagome Higurashi. That had been her obituary, over six years ago. There had been an article how the whole family had been killed in their home.

He informed the small man of everything that had happened and demanded answers. Koenma left for over an hour then came back with a book and shook his head. "You just had to bring this to my attention didn't you. Let's see here, yes here it is. Kagome Higurashi, born nineteen years ago, died six years ago." His eyes widened when he saw the attachment on the page. "This can't be good. And you say that girl used the name?"

"Yes, mother found her two years ago. She was in a coma for over two years it seems, now she's awake and loose in the city. What we need to know is, is she dangerous." Kurama was worried about his mother. What if there was a chance this girl remembered seeing his mother's face before slipping into her comatose state. Someone with an unrational mind could easily blame the last face they saw on their misfortune.

"This could really be bad. This Kagome Higurashi was suppose to be reincarnated with the soul from a miko that died over five centuries ago. It says here that the girl was indeed reincarnated but most of the soul had been missing at the time. Says during the fight for the Shikon Jewel during the fuedal era, most of the soul ended up missing." He took the report that was under it and began to read. "NO they didn't! Those idiots, what were they thinking? This report says that the jewel was brought back to that time by a young miko that was rumored to be from the future, five centuries from the future to be exact. Which would make it now, her name was Kagome Higurashi. Says here she was also stated to be the reincarnation of Kikyou. Very confusing, what a mess."

"So what the hell does it all mean?" Yusuke demanded, his brain was starting to hurt to keep from getting lost.

"To make it simple Yusuke. Five centuries ago Kagome Higurashi somehow tampered with the past. When she did, a part of her soul was stolen and it given to Kikyou that was brought back to life. So both Kagome who had majority of the soul and Kikyou who only had a small portion existed. Somehow, Kagome managed to change the past and in doing so it changed her future. This report states that the miko Kagome suddenly disappeared one day. Eventually, Kikyou died again, when she did the small part of the soul was brought back here. Time passed, centuries went by; the morons that work in the reincarnation department reincarnated the soul even though it wasn't complete. That went into the present day Kagome Higurashi, the girl that died six years ago."

"So is it possible the Kagome that was in the past somehow got lost in time? If she somehow changed her future, she couldn't exist now could she?" Kurama asked, it was indeed confusing. Then again messing with time was always a funny thing.

"Yes, she could still possibly exist. If she was still alive when the event that changed the loop of time took place. My guess is something happened five centuries ago that changed her future, for some reason she was sent back anyways. Our records show that Kagome Higurashi died and is dead still. But what if whatever forced her to return knew what would take place, and wanted her here? My guess is that she was supposed to have died but didn't. She still contains the majority of the soul, so her existing isn't a question of how but why. There is always one way to find out, we ask the portion of the soul we have."


Koenma waited for the soul to be brought in, it no longer had it's physical form. It floated above his desk, waiting for the reason it had been brought. Yusuke walked over to it, he'd seen a few souls before; this one looked normal to him. "Are you sure this isn't a whole soul, looks normal to me."

"I assure you I am not complete, far from it. Is that why you have brought me here? To ask about the girl that the rest of my soul resides in? Don't look so shocked, I am very aware of my past. Seems being incomplete had it's effect. I still retain my memories from the time I was seperated from my original host. I was torn from the girl that had become my reincarnation, my name was Kikyou. Would you like to know about the girl? If so I will have to tell you a long tale."

"Yes, the reports here are sketchy at best. What happened five centuries ago?" Koenma sat back in his desk wanting to hear everything.

"Five centuries I was a miko that was chosen to guard the Shikon No Tama due to my unusual purification abilities. I took my duty serious, keeping all manner of youkai and human that would have used it away. One day a hanyou showed, I fell in love with him and began to regret my duty as a miko. I longed to have a normal life with him. He was going to use the jewel to become human, to be with me. A bandit that I had rescued by the name of Onigumo craved the jewel and me. He offered his body and soul to youkai, soon he was reborn into a hanyou known as Naraku. He decieved both me and Inuyasha, making us believe we had betrayed each other. I pinned Inuyasha to a tree, sealing him there forever. I died but managed to get the jewel back. It was cremated along with my body, sent with my soul into the afterlife. The next thing I remember, I was brought back to life by a witch. She used my ashes along with graveside soil to do this. Seems my reincarnation from five centuries in the future somehow came through a well. When she did she brought back the jewel inside her body. It was removed and then shattered into many shards."

"The witch wanted my ability to find the shards for her. So she brought my body back and she found my reincarnation. My soul was pulled from Kagome, entering my new body. Somehow the girl managed to call the soul back, when she sensed that Inuyasha was in danger. Seems the girl had managed to release the hanyou I had loved. The soul you see before you is the part that I managed to escape with. The girl took most of it back within her that day. I fed upon the souls of dead women to keep by new body from rotting. Yes, condemn me if you must but I wanted vegeance for the life that I had lost. I soon found out the truth of Naraku and the trick that he had played. The girl Kagome stayed with Inuyasha, they became very close. In the end we all sought to see the jewel complete and to destroy Naraku. I put my hatred for Inuyasha aside, I still loved him."

"I don't know the details, I'll tell you what I know. Inuyasha was a hanyou and had trouble controlling his youkia blood. His body wasn't made for the full power of being a true youkai. He had a fang, a sword that helped keep the blood at bay. He travelled with my reincarnation and a small band of humans. One day Naraku managed to break the fang, and used tainted jewel shards to control his beast. The group was slaughtered by him and an offspring. From what I was told Inuyasha turned on the girl he loved and had sworn to protect. He raped her brutally and was about to kill her but his brother interfered. The girl was said to have disappeared minutes later never to be seen again."

"My body gave out on me making it easy for Naraku to kill me. My soul was then returned here, where I waited for the rest to join me. Needless to say I was once again reincarnated into Kagome, only to die again by the hands of Naraku. That large part of my soul has yet to return simply because the original Kagome still has it. I know she is here, in this time. After all it was where she was originally from, where else would she return to? Shame all she would have known would have been erased."

Kurama let it all sink in, it had to be true. "My mother said when the girl was found she'd been attacked and raped. But why was she sent back? She should have ceased to exist the moment history changed."

The soul turned to face the redhead, "My opinion on that matter. The jewel had a mind of it's own, it was made from the soul of a miko and youkai. Sometimes it had a way of reacting on it's own. I will now admit that with proper training Kagome could have been more powerful than even I was. Maybe since the jewel had already been reincarnated into her body, it had also experienced that time loop. It could have sensed it the moment history was changed. If the girl hadn't been sent back at that moment, she would have died. It would have wanted to spare the girl it had formed a bond with. The only person alive that would be able to stop Naraku. Seeing how the jewel was what enabled her to travel between the two eras to begin with. It wanted to send her someplace safe out of harm's way, it chose where she'd originally came from. In doing so she took the last jewel shard with her ensuring that Naraku wouldn't get his hands on it."

"As I said it was Naraku that killed me once more after I was reincarnated into Kagome. He came for the last shard believing that I would have it. If Kagome is indeed back, it will still be with her." The soul of Kikyou settled down on the desk, "If so, I wish to return to her. Complete once more, she can destroy Naraku and finish what I set out to do."

"Like Koenma is going to let you free so you can start eating souls again lady." Yusuke yelled at her.

"Calm down, if I let her, she will cease to exist. Kagome has the majority of the soul, it is her soul now. This small part remains to be Kikyou's until it is reunited with the rest. It is a good idea actually, the soul needs to be complete. I want you two to take the soul and find Hiei. With his help you will locate the girl, she needs to be brought in. Explain everything to him, there's a good chance Naraku will come for the remaining shard once he realizes it is back." Koenma picked the soul up and handed it to Kurama. "I'm entrusting you with this. See that the girl is brought back safe and unharmed. She will be in a terrible state as it is. When you find her, both of you will remember what she has been through, understood?"


Kagome walked up the long steps that should have been taking her to the shrine. A seal was placed along trees that shouldn't have been there. The entire city looked different, even her old school carried another name. Memory took her to where she'd grown up, where the well should be and her family. At the top of the steps, she saw that some type of temple or shrine was there. Yet the structure was all wrong, it wasn't her home.

There were too many trees around, it was now secluded from the city. What had happened to her home? She was in the right era, a little over two years from when she'd last seen her family. How could things have changed so much in only two years? It just wasn't possible, where had she ended up? Had something happened to change her future?

Blue eyes studied the structure right in front of her, a large building was there. Her guess a temple of some sort, she picked up the aura of a youkai. Fear had filled her upon waking, youkai were abundant now for some reason. An old woman came stepping outside, hands behind her back. Kagome could sense that she was powerful even for someone that age.

"Who are you and what do you want?" Genkai stared at the young girl, wondering what she was doing here. The only visitors that she got were her boy and the others. No one new ever showed up unannounced.

"I'm looking for the shrine that use to be here and the family. It was called the Higurashi shrine, what happened to it?"

"I'm not sure what you are talking about girl. I've been here for over fifty years and I am the only owner. It was a shrine when I first purchased it, now it's just me here. Is there anything I can help you with?" Genkai was shocked when the girl suddenly fainted.
