Chapter 3: The Secret
Dark ruby colored gems scanned the lunchroom quickly. Her blood red lips twisted into a smile and then into a disgusted grimace.
Queer her mind whispered, seeing her beloved boyfriend with that... that...
She shuddered, not even wanting to think about it, and yet she couldn't understand for all the world why Miroku would hang out with that filth, Hiten. Then again, the irony of it all was that, the scum's sister was one of her best friends. It was really tragic seeing as how Hiten was infatuated, obsessed, or even in love with Shippou, his younger sister's boyfriend. Too bad, it was either going after something forbidden or watching from the sideline's as Souten basked in happiness with Shippou, but sometimes...
...Sometimes she had the feeling that Shippou wasn't in love with Souten, there was just something about him...
...Something that wasn't right, but she couldn't put her finger on it, couldn't quite grasp what it was.
It was like when he was with Souten he was thinking of someone else. Now-a-days Shippou's eyes didn't have the happy or enthusiastic glow they usually held; instead they looked rather sad, almost as if he were suffering.
But what was he suffering from?
Kagura blinked, startled.
Where had those thoughts come from?
She gave herself a mental shake and closed her eyes momentarily before opening them again. Her red eyes narrowed in jealousy and possessiveness. It was obvious that Hiten was gay, especially by the way he put his hand on Miroku's knee. She strode forward, intent on telling him where he could put his hand, but then Miroku would get mad. She stopped in the middle of the lunchroom and frowned. She had asked Miroku countless times why he had bothered with Hiten and he always, always brushed her off by saying something like, Hiten's my friend or Back off Kagura.
She would feign hurt and stare at him with glossy eyes and then almost grin evilly when he would comfort her and try to shush her by kissing away all the tears. He didn't do that any more, in fact she often found herself wondering if Miroku loved her, let alone care for her. He often acted guilty, and she wanted to know why. Maybe it was that fruitcake he hung out with.
But...
... Whether or not the person was gay or straight, that person had a strange effect on Miroku.
Like Sango.
Her eyes narrowed into slits.
She knew Sango held a strong attraction for her boyfriend and that was all fine and dandy, as long as he wasn't attracted to her. Miroku belonged to her, and her alone.
Her lips curved into a grin. She started to walk forward again intent on surprising him. Seconds later, she was behind him and her arms instantly shot out to wrap themselves around his strong, solid shoulders, her lips brushing against his ear and she felt him stiffen momentarily before relaxing again, although not quite. She briefly wondered - what that was all about?
"Hello lover" she whispered, her voice sounding low and sultry.
Miroku turned around and gave her a small smile. He grabbed her by the waist and pulled her down on to his lap. Kagura let out a giggle and Hiten grimaced in disgust. She sneered at him and he gave her the finger. Miroku placed soft open mouthed kisses on her neck and Hiten pushed his chair back.
"Excuse me" he muttered darkly stomping out of the lunchroom, thoroughly disgusted by the display of... something... he couldn't quite place.
Kagura smiled triumphantly, before she nearly melted underneath Miroku's touch.
"Miroku" she groaned as his fingers ran over her smooth and silky thighs. She unconsciously spread her legs for him and felt his fingers slip even higher than before making her breath hitch in her throat.
He looked at her with dark and deep blue irises before he glanced somewhere else in the lunchroom and she saw his expression change instantly. His expression changed from lust to something akin to guilt.
Why would he feel guilty?
She turned her body to see what he was looking at and understood why.
She nearly growled out loud.
Sango...
Her lips curled into a cold smile. She watched, slightly fascinated as Sango watched them in mute horror. Her eyes lowered to glance at the position they were in. Kagura's grin lowered into a frown and she watched entranced as sad tears filled Sango's eyes. She shot Miroku a look before turning on her heel to run.
"Sango!"
Kagura froze. She just couldn't believe it. She just... she couldn't.
She was paralyzed.
Miroku... had... Miroku had called Sango's name.
She tilted her head up towards the ceiling and blinked back tears. She pushed herself off of Miroku's lap and gave him a dirty look before turning to leave the lunchroom.
"Kagura wait" he called, but she was already half way out of the lunchroom.
He grabbed her by the shoulder and spun her around to look at him. She glared at him and her hand blindly shot out and she felt her hand connect with his cheek followed by a loud slap that resounded in the lunchroom.
The noise instantly died down.
She looked at him through tear filled eyes. She took a tentative step back when he took one forward.
"Don't" she hissed and glared at him through teary eyes. This time when she turned around he let her go.
His fingers lifted to his cheek, where he felt the imprint of Kagura's slap. He rubbed it, as if that would stop the stinging sensation of the slap he had just received. He lowered his dark blue eyes.
I'm sorry... Sango.
- - - - -
Artists are quite often misunderstood. His fingers moved in sync with the piece of charcoal he was holding, quickly moving over the paper, trying to finish the sketch he had started a few days ago, and here he was, a few days later finishing it up. Something that he had never done before in his life. When he started out a quick sketch, it didn't take him long, and yet here he was with one sketch that he was moving over, delicately, as if afraid he would make a mistake. He tried to sort out his thoughts, but they kept going back to... him, to Hiten.
He smiled wryly.
Something that keeps me from finishing this sketch he thought with a sigh.
His fingers stopped in mid-stride of what he was doing and he looked up briefly, with sad glossy colored eyes.
Why? Why must I go through all of this? Can't I... Can't I just be with the person that I love? He thought miserably, but then wondered who he was talking about.
Was he talking about Souten... or Hiten?
He let out a soft sigh and looked down at his sketch. It started out as his girlfriend Souten, but then the image transformed into something completely different, to someone else. Now the sketch was of Hiten, and he was horrified, because of the fact that he was with Souten.
I am with Souten, but why am I thinking of Hiten?
Or maybe it's because Souten looks so much like Hiten that...
He paled and put down the piece of charcoal he was just holding.
His body was shaking, trembling so badly.
But was it because of fear or something else?
"That's a pretty good sketch" someone said, making his body tremble in anticipation.
Please... he thought, looking at the person with hazy colored gems.
His lips parted in a silent gasp of shock.
"Hiten" he breathed in shock or amazement, he wasn't really sure.
The only thing he was sure of, was that he was happy, happier than he had been in days, maybe even weeks.
Hiten's bright orange or red - he wasn't really sure at the moment, nor did he choose to care - colored orbs were staring at him in worry, although he saw the way Hiten's mouth curled into a smile, something that reached his eyes, especially from the way his eyes crinkled in delight. Shippou let out a soft audible gasp. Hiten never smiled - could it be that he feels the same way...?
He lowered his eyes, blushing hotly and mentally began to chastise himself for his thoughts.
"Thank-you" he mumbled, his blush intensifying.
"Shippou, are you all right?" Hiten asked and he felt the concern in his voice. He lifted his eyes, his face tilting upwards, nodding his head in consent. Seeing Shippou with his face tilted upwards made Hiten immediately want to kiss him. Looking at Shippou from this angle made him want to lean forward and press his lips against Shippou's, but...
... He knew he could never do that, especially since Souten loved Shippou... and - he took in a deep, sharp intake of air - Shippou loved Souten.
He stumbled backwards, his fingers automatically clutching his shirt, where he felt his heart pounding loudly and felt the pain in his heart. He landed hard on the grass with a thud. Faintly he heard someone call his name. He didn't know admitting something to himself could be so painful, but it was.
"Hiten" Shippou yelled, moving from his sitting position.
He watched horrified, as Hiten toppled onto the ground with a loud thud.
"Hiten" he whispered, moving forward. He sat down next to him and lowered his head, to see if he was breathing and thankfully he was.
"Hiten, are you all right?" He asked quietly, his cheeks flushing darkly.
Hiten opened his eyes to stare at Shippou and was surprised to see him go teary-eyed.
"I'm fine, don't cry" he mumbled.
"No, you're not fine, you're hurt" Shippou cried out loud.
"I'm fine... Shippou" he whispered, smiling softly at him. His fingers tentatively reached upwards to brush the bangs away from his eyes and then he wiped away the tears. His hand stopped moving, it stayed on Shippou's cheek and he stared at him with an emotion that Shippou couldn't quite define.
If only things were... different. Is it wrong to be in love with a guy... if you're a guy? Maybe I'm better off keeping my thoughts to myself, maybe I should go on without loving, stay cold, then you'll never get hurt. Is it so bad to have unrequited love, if it makes someone else happy? But the temptation is there, lingering, waiting for you to grasp it. And his lips... they look so soft and he's crying for me... right? But... why? He thought with anguish.
It hurt him to know he was the cause of so many problems.
"I'm not worth your tears" he said quietly, so quietly that Shippou had to strain his ears.
Then there was silence. The only thing they could hear was the wind ruffling softly. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, Shippou spoke.
"I-I-yes... you are" he said at last, biting his bottom lip wondering if he said the right thing.
Hiten shook his head, his fingers moving from his warm cheek, to the back of his neck. He felt the hair on the back of Shippou's neck rise underneath his touch and yet Shippou showed no indication to pull away. In fact he seemed to want Hiten's touch. Hiten pulled Shippou's face toward his own, his fingers tangling in the silky strands of his fiery red hair. He just wanted... just wanted to touch his lips, if only just this once. Shippou instinctively closed his eyes and just as their lips were about to touch, someone had called both of their names.
They pulled away from each other quickly, both flushing darkly.
Shippou flushing in embarrassment and Hiten, in guilt.
Hiten looked up and watched as his sister came into view. He felt his heart lurch painfully and realized what he had almost done with Souten's boyfriend. His heart was beating furiously within the confines of his chest. He smiled guiltily and watched as Shippou scrambled to get his things together, placing them in his book bag blindly and avoiding eye contact with him. He grimaced and was startled when he felt someone hug him.
"Eh... Souten" he said, avoiding eye contact with her.
She smiled at him and grabbed his hand, starting to drag him over to Shippou.
"Souten what are you doing?" Hiten whispered frantically, his eyes widening considerably.
Souten just smiled.
He watched in mute horror and fascination as Souten grabbed Shippou's hand, dragging them both into school. Souten smiled brightly, Hiten smiled guiltily and Shippou grimaced.
Both Hiten and Shippou kept quiet as they allowed Souten to drag them into the school.
"This is great! My brother and boyfriend are bonding" Souten exclaimed with a laugh.
Hiten's guilty smile turned into a wry grimace.
If only it were that simple Souten, if only it were that simple...
- - - - -
She closed her eyes, leaning against the wall for support. Her heart was beating rapidly from the scene she had just witnessed in the lunchroom and she clenched her eyes shut tighter, but she kept seeing the same thing.
Kagura on Miroku's lap, Miroku caressing Kagura, Kagura spreading herself for Miroku, she could have sworn she even heard their groans, but then she saw the guilt in Miroku's eyes, the confusion in Kagura's.
She slid down against the wall, sitting on the floor, knowing she couldn't handle this, but...
... But, I don't like Miroku, do I? She thought and shook her head.
No, of course not!
But, then why did it hurt seeing Miroku with Kagura?
She didn't get to dwell on it too much because she heard the shrill ring of the bell, startling her. She got up from the floor, pushing herself off of the wall and started walking to her final class of the day, something she had with Kagome. She sighed gratefully before she felt her body shudder visibly. She also had that class with Kagura and she really didn't want to see Kagura today... or ever again, not when she could flaunt the fact that she was with Miroku.
But then why did she care so much?
She sighed and walked into the classroom. She grimaced again; too bad her last class was math class. She slowly started to walk toward her seat and saw Kagome. Kagome gave her a small smile and Sango knew immediately, that Kagome was feeling guilty.
But why would she feel guilty? Sango thought, giving Kagome a suspicious look.
"What... did you do?" Sango asked, her voice laced heavily with suspicion.
Kagome laughed sheepishly, knowing Sango already saw through her act.
She faked a gasp.
"Sango how could you so blatantly accuse me of something?" Kagome asked in a hushed whisper, taking out her notebook as the teacher started to write on the board.
Sango shot Kagome a dry look.
Kagome laughed again, nervously.
She twiddled her thumbs together nervously, before placing them in her lap. She began to fidget with the hem of her uniform skirt, tightening her grip on it, then forcing herself to relax, although not quite. She cleared her throat and lowered her voice a notch.
"Well you see, during lunch..." she paused and bit her lip, whereas Sango was struck with the image of Kagura and Miroku together in that position for the umpteenth time today. She blinked back the tears that quickly gathered in her eyes. "Seeing as how we're going to the pool hall and you already have a ride, whereas I did not, I asked Miroku to give me a ride and he agreed."
The door opened with a loud bang, startling everyone in the classroom, including the teacher.
Speak of the devil Sango thought, her chin quivering.
Kagura seemed to have felt her eyes on her because she turned her head to look at Sango and what Sango saw simply amazed her.
Kagura's eyes were swollen, as if she had been crying and her nose was red as well. But what amazed Sango the most was that when Kagura's eyes landed on her from, she looked at her with a deep sadness, a deep indescribable pain.
Sango paled considerably and felt her hands begin to shake, for what, she wasn't sure, but she knew she couldn't face Miroku today, not after seeing Kagura now, not after seeing Kagura like this.
Not after seeing Kagura this devastated.
Now, Sango was honestly afraid. She cleared her throat loudly, moving her eyes away from Kagura's. The teacher was surprisingly quiet as well, as if she knew that Kagura was upset, yet she said nothing at all. In fact, she kept her mouth shut.
"All right everyone, get back to taking notes" she said, rather loudly making the students wince.
Kagura slowly walked to her seat, her feet shuffling on the floor, her head down, her shoulders slumped in defeat, surprising most of the students in the classroom. Slowly, the eyes moved away from Kagura's form back to the board and slowly everyone began to take notes once more. Kagome and Sango began to resume their conversation.
"I know there's more Kagome, what else i-i-is Miroku going to do?" Sango asked, stammering, her eyes meeting Kagome's and she saw the surprise forming in Kagome's blue irises.
"Well... during our conversation... I kind of... invited him to go with us to the pool hall" Kagome whispered, praying that Sango didn't hear her.
Too bad she did.
"Kagome" Sango hissed, rather loudly. She dug her fingernails into her palms until she felt her skin being torn open and felt the cool liquid of her own blood, gathering quickly on her fingertips.
"You know how I feel about him" she hissed angrily.
Kagome responded with a cat-like smile, something that immediately reminded Sango of the Cheshire cat from Alice in Wonderland. Her smile eerily replayed a message or rather a hidden message that Sango couldn't quite grasp and yet something in her smile allowed Sango to know that Kagome knew her true feelings for Miroku. Kagome's eyes smiled as well, dancing if she really thought about it. As if twinkling in mischief.
I know Sango... Kagome thought with a sad wistful smile. I know all about unrequited love, I know about love that was abused, I know about being broken and I know how much you love Miroku, but I want you to tell me what you feel. I want to hear the words coming from your mouth, because when they do, even you will have to accept the truth and live with it.
Instead, Kagome opted to say something else.
"I know exactly how you feel Sango" Kagome said in all seriousness. "But you should at least talk to someone about it."
Kagome gave Sango another wistful smile, and Sango's eyebrows rose in surprise. Kagome acted as if she had gone through this before, as if she had felt the pain that she was now going through.
Maybe she had.
After all, I don't know everything about Kagome's past she thought with a small frown.
Kagome smiled, her eyes twinkling.
"Your secret's safe with me Sango-chan and I won't tell anyone, unless you want me to" she said with a soft mischievous smile.
Somehow, despite her pain, her lips curled into a real smile.
"Thank-you, Kagome-chan" Sango said. Kagome nodded her head and turned toward the board once more. Minutes later the bell rang and everyone was quickly getting out of their seats, rushing to get out of this 'hell hole' they called school.
Kagome was walking slowly towards the entrance of the school and was shocked at how quickly the time seemed to fly by. Then again, she was talking to Sango during most of the period. She sighed and quickly turned towards her locker and pulled out some books, stuffing them in her bag quickly. As she shut her locker, her fingers ran over the cool metal and she remembered the incident that had occurred earlier. She closed her eyes briefly. She had easily melted underneath Inuyasha's touch, something she should of never done...
... Ever...
But his lips... oh his lips...
Inuyasha had the most softest and sweetest lips Kagome ever had the chance of touching.
"Inuyasha" she whispered and her blue eyes opened in shock.
She took a few awkward steps backward, stumbling in the process, but she quickly regained her footing.
What... am I thinking? W-why am I thinking about Inuyasha and his soft lips and how... he was able to make me easily succumb to his wishes with just one tender touch? She thought, her stomach churning.
She swallowed thickly and practically ran out of the school and into the school's parking lot where she saw Miroku. She quickly walked over to him and his baby. She tried to make herself appear calm and relaxed, but knew immediately that Miroku saw right through her, especially with those haunting, vivid blue eyes... the same eyes that she...
She broke off quickly, blinking as she saw Miroku's hand waving in front of her face. She let out a high pitched nervous giggle.
"Sorry" she mumbled automatically, lowering her lashes.
Miroku nodded, handing her a royal blue helmet to put on. She quickly took it, slipped it on, and took a seat behind him, placing her arms around his waist and placing her head on his back. She never noticed the three pairs of eyes soaking up her form.
Sango smiled softly, she knew Miroku cared for Kagome like a sister and she knew Kagome loved Miroku like the older brother she never had. She shook her head and saw her cousin hand her a helmet and frowned. Hiten wasn't telling her something and she wanted to know what it was.
She sighed and shook her head, getting on the back of his motorcycle.
"Are you okay Sango?" She heard her cousin ask in concern.
"I'm fine" she said, although her mouth didn't attempt to lift into a smile.
Hiten nodded and let the subject drop. He cranked up his own motorcycle and took off with Sango clinging to his form. Sango closed her eyes as the air seemed to comfort her momentarily, willing herself not to lose control.
After all, it was the only thing she had left.
- - - - -
"Kagura what's wrong?" Kikyou asked, seeing her best friend's body shake and tremble.
Kikyou turned her head to see what her friend was looking at and she realized why Kagura was shaking.
Higurashi.
Kikyou's gray eyes hardened, yet she said nothing.
Kagura's eyes grew wide and her body seemed to quake until she felt her knees collapse, making her fall onto the cold, hard floor. This was too much in one day and she knew Miroku was keeping secrets from her.
She felt the stinging sensation of tears and tried to blink them away, but it was no use. This time she let the tears fall. She looked at Miroku with teary eyes, ignoring the fact that Kikyou was calling her name in worry. Kagura bit her lip and felt a wretched, broken sob escape her throat.
First Sango, and now... Kagome? Why? Why have you betrayed me... Miroku? Why don't you tell me anything anymore? Why can't you just... love me?
- - - - -
Inuyasha's golden orbs narrowed into slits. He didn't like the fact that Kagome was on Miroku's motorcycle, nor did he like the fact that she was so comfortable with him. He let out a low dangerous growl and then stopped.
What the hell... why am I growling? He thought, his golden irises clouding over in confusion.
He shook his head, deciding not to dwell on it too long, he'd probably get over in no time.
He hopped on his own motorcycle and raced off, leaving his previous thoughts behind... at least... for now.
- - - - -
The scenery passed by her in a blur, a series of movement. She'd glance and then divert her attention, before closing her eyes and hugging him by the waist tighter. She was so caught up in her own thoughts, in her own worries.
Worried for Sango and worried for Hiten, sad for Souten and sad for Shippou. And that forbidden kiss, that one kiss had changed everything.
It's the cycle of life, ne? She told herself, smiling bitterly and she blinked back tears. So many things affect me, so many things... I hate change because it ruined everything.
She blinked and felt Miroku's motorcycle slow down, before coming to a halt and then she heard the engine turn off. She pulled away from him and pulled off the helmet, handing it back to him.
"Thanks Miroku-kun" she said softly, giving him a small smile.
His frigid blue eyes softened considerably turning into the softest shade of a pastel blue she'd ever seen. He ruffled her hair and smiled.
"Anything for you Kagome, anything for my little sister" he said affectionately.
Kagome giggled and linked arms with Miroku, before proceeding to walk into the pool hall with him. She stopped short and frowned, her brows furrowing.
Why is Hiten's motorcycle here? He was just supposed to drop Sango off and then go to work, not hang out here or whatever they're doing she thought, confused.
"Kagome?" Miroku asked, brows furrowing in worry.
Kagome blinked, pulling away from her thoughts.
"Sorry" she mumbled automatically, black lashes sweeping downwards and across her rosy cheeks.
Miroku shook his head and smiled again, showing a set of pearly white teeth. They both walked forward together and into the pool hall. Kagome dislodged herself from Miroku's grasp and turned to see Sango and Hiten in the back. She frowned, brows etched in concern. She knew Miroku hadn't noticed anything at all yet, but seeing Hiten and Sango, practically clinging to each other scared Kagome to death. She walked towards the back, knowing she wouldn't be able to see anything at all from here, especially because of the dim lighting.
"Sango? Hiten?" Kagome called, unsure of herself.
They quickly pulled away from each other, and Kagome finally got a glimpse of their faces. Her lips parted in a silent gasp of shock. Hiten's face was stained and streaked with tears, his eyes looked so vividly haunting at the moment, so vividly sad. Sango on the other hand quickly swiped her hands against her cheeks, wiping away the few tears she had cried.
Why are you guys crying and why were you guys hugging each other so tightly? Kagome pondered, closing her mouth.
"Are you guys all right?" Kagome asked.
Both Sango and Hiten shared a look, something that Kagome didn't miss. The both nodded, looking away from each other.
"We're fine" they mumbled automatically.
Kagome shot them both suspicious looks, but said nothing else. She nodded her head, letting the subject drop... for now.
"Kagome!" Someone called. Kagome turned around and noticed Miroku was calling her name. She glanced at him before turning to look at Sango and Hten once again. Hiten moved forward and smiled.
"Listen guys, I've got to go, I'll call you later" he said, giving Sango a look. She lowered her lashes. Hiten kissed Sango on the cheek and then hugged Kagome, kissing her on the cheek as well. Kagome smiled at Hiten, although her eyes were saying something completely different.
She watched as Hiten walked out of the pool hall before turning around to look at Sango. She narrowed her eyes, but Sango wouldn't look at her.
"Sango" Kagome said, her voice strangely sharp. Sango gave a nervous laugh and kept avoiding Kagome's eyes.
"Sango." Kagome tried again, but Sango just shook her head indicating she didn't want to speak about it.
"What was that all about?" Kagome asked.
Sango finally looked up, maroon colored eyes fixed on Kagome's light blue ones. Kagome felt paralyzed.
"Sango" she whispered softly, her voice laced with sorrow.
"Kagome I..." Sango started off and was cut off when she saw Miroku approaching. She felt her eyes widen considerably and felt her hands start to sweat. She clenched them shut and hissed.
"Miroku's coming" she said quietly.
Kagome blinked, turning around and sure enough there was Miroku walking over to her with the balls in his hand. Kagome blinked in surprise again when she realized that she was leaning against a pool table.
I was so worried about Sango and Hiten, I completely forgot where I was and who I came here with Kagome thought frowning.
She quickly shook her head and watched as Miroku put the balls down on the table. She moved away from the table when a thought struck her.
"Miroku if we're playing pool and there are only three of us here, how can we all play?" She asked, tilting her head to the side.
Miroku looked at Kagome and smiled.
"Kagome there's another person coming" Miroku answered, blue eyes twinkling.
"What?" Kagome asked, confused.
Miroku shook his head and opened his mouth to speak.
"Kagome..."
But Kagome wasn't listening because another person came waltzing in, a person who lit up the whole room, a person who stood out, a person with stunning silver hair and cute dog ears. Kagome gasped and watched as that person turned to face them. His lips curled into a cold smile as he watched Kagome's eyes become as wide as dinner plates.
She only breathed one word.
"Inuyasha."

Sango.

"Inuyasha."
