Chapter 2: Broken

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

“Inu Yasha!” Kagome screamed as she ran towards the fallen hanyou. She collapsed next to him, picking up his head and placing it in her lap, there was blood running down his pale forehead and into his eyes, his right arm was in a position that it shouldn’t be. Blood pooled around his crumpled body, making tears well up in Kagome’s eyes

“It’ll be okay, Inu-chan, I’m here now, You’ll be fine” she whimpered, nuzzling her face into his disheveled silver hair, her own tears mixing with the blood that was drying in his hair. When the rest of the group caught up they all surrounded the fallen hanyou. In her emotional state, Kagome hadn’t bothered to even look at the wounds and Sango had to almost drag the distraught girl away from Inu Yasha.

“Kagome-chan.” Sango said seriously looking into her friend’s teary eyes. “We’re going to take care of him”, she pulled the sobbing Kagome into a hug, “I promise, just don’t think about it…”

“Sango!” Miroku called, “Come here, I need your help” the houshi looking up at the two sympathetically. Sango pulled away from Kagome and smoothed her hair and whispered something more to her young friend before joininging the monk.

“Is he… alive?” Sango asked, trying to find some sign of life in the hanyou that her friend obviously loved so much.

“Hai,” Miroku said loudly, so Kagome could hear it, but then the houshi lowered his voice, “ but I don’t know for how long… he needs Kaede but I’m afraid to move him, all I can really do is keep him from bleeding to death, until we get him better treatment”. The houshi frowned, “I don’t like this Sango-chan…” Miroku looked up at the chocolate brown eyes that were laced with worry, not for the hanyou, but for the girl that cared for him.

“Let her go to Kaede, it’ll give her something to do” the houshi whispered to the exterminator, “I’m going to try to bind a few more of his injuries before she gets here.” He gave the girl a half smile, trying to be reassuring but his eyes showed the doubt in his heart.

“Try your hardest, Miroku” whispered Sango, biting her lower lip as she took a look at Inu Yasha and winced at the severity of his wounds, understanding the houshi’s doubt. She stood up and walked to her friend who was now staring, wide eyed at the scene, backed against a tree and looking like she was going to run away.

“Kagome-chan” she gave the younger girl a little shake, “Kagome-chan! You need to go to Kaede-baba, and get her, Inu Yasha needs her!” Sango pointed at the pink bike Kagome tended to bring with her on their excursions. “As fast as you can, Nee-chan”.

Kagome looked startled by Sango’s intrusion into her thoughts but, “H-Hai Sango-chan”, she nodded, whimpered and moved off almost like she wasn’t in possession of her own body, climbed onto her bike and waved goodbye to Sango who was holding a bawling Shippo.

As she rode off, Kagome faintly wondered what could have done that to her strong Inu Yasha, then her thoughts carried to the task at hand, mainly avoiding dips and rocks on the path. However, the young miko didn’t have to wait long for the answer to her first question, as she rounded the bend, and saw a very large, what looked like a bear youkai laying in the middle of the path… covered in blood.

The girl glared at the bear… but as the youkai shifted in its sleep, she realized that the bear youkai wasn’t just a bear youkai. This ‘bear’ had scales… and talons… a dragon. One of the most feared youkai, but it still had most of the form of a bear… a half-breed, like Inu Yasha… only between two demons and not a demon and a human. The thought of that made her want to curl up into a little ball.

Kagome’s heart leapt into her throat and she tried to take the bike into the woods to hide from the beast, but as she did she tripped over a rock in the middle of the path and fell flat on her face with a yelp that she tried to contain, and failed. The dragon-bear youkai stirred and turned red eyes on her. She stumbled to her feet and pulled out her bow and arrows readying herself for battle.

Something like amusement entered the giant beast’s eyes as he stretched out a talon to swipe at the girl who let an arrow loose at him, which just bounced off his armored hide. Kagome dropped and rolled to avoid the deadly claws, ripping her skirt in the process.
She stood again and readied another arrow to shoot at the youkai’s eye. She let it fly and was only rewarded by the swipe of a tail that she never even saw. She hit the ground with a sickening thump; the last thing she saw was the great beast lumbering off in the direction from which she came.

“Sango, could you go get this wet for me?” the now blood-covered houshi asked, holding up a black piece of fabric that seemed to be ripped from his robes, “Hai, Miroku…” she looked down at the monk, fighting hard to keep the hanyou alive, wondering what she would do if that were HIM instead of Inu Yasha. ‘No… you can’t think about that, you and the Miroku could never be, he’s a lecherous baka, and a houshi to boot! You’ll never have what Kagome has with Inu Yasha…’ she looked sadly down at the half-breed demon struggling for life.

She nodded firmly to herself and took off towards where she knew there was a stream, hoping that Kagome got to Kaede-san soon, she didn’t know how long Inu Yasha could last without the miko’s help.

But before she got to the stream, she heard the warning mews of her companion neko, the tone of them sent shivers up her spine. The little neko was running through the brush behind her as fast as her legs would carry her… ‘Why is she so small if she wants to be fast?’ Sango asked herself, but the answer presented itself before she could wonder any further.

“Miroku…” she screamed, her brown eyes widening as she saw what was barreling towards them, “Oh.. kami” the exterminator whimpered before everything went dark. The beast… turned and headed back towards the clearing where Inu Yasha and Miroku were. Leaving Kirara to lament the girl who had cared for her.

Shippo’s sensitive ears picked the footsteps up before Mirkou’s weaker human ears could have, but it wasn’t quick enough. The little kitsune yelled a warning to his friend, who was so completely involved in his treatment of the hanyou’s wound’s he didn’t even really hear the young youkai’s warning.

He just pushed the child away when he tried to pull Miroku away, saying “If you want him to live, LEAVE ME ALONE!”, Shippo, not wanting to visit his parents so soon… and figuring that he was probably the only hope for the group turned and darted into the dense forest.

He looked back over his shoulder to see a big, green, scaled bear enter the clearing and Miroku realizing that he should have taken the kitsune’s advice… Shippo turned, with tears in his eyes, the loss of another family drove him to find the way back to Kaede… maybe Kagome was safe. His new mother, maybe she would protect him.

“Please Kami, I don’t wanna be alone again” the little fox whimpered as he darted through the trees, and away from Miroku’s shouts and the bear-dragon youkai’s roars.
