Chapter 2: You’re Hired!
Kagome was as angry as she could be walking back to her apartment in downtown Tokyo. ‘Why does he get under my skin so much!? What the hell am I going to do now!? Maybe, I shouldn’t have quit like that.’ Kagome thought mentally kicking herself in the process.
When she arrived home, she changed out of her work clothes and into something more comfortable, and went into the kitchen to get something to snack on. She opened the fridge and grabbed some strawberries and put them on the counter, and went to grab the sugar out of the cabinet when her black kitten Remmie jumped up on the counter in front of her and scared her half to death.
”Remmie don’t scare me like that!” Kagome said chuckling to herself when the cat began to purr when Kagome scratched behind his ears.
Kagome grabbed her bowl of strawberries with sugar, and headed into her office, and sat down at her computer, and turned it on. Waiting for the computer to start Kagome grabbed a strawberry and bit into it, making a funny face when doing so, because she wasn’t prepared for the sweetness that invaded her mouth.
‘I guess I should look for a new job, since I quit.’ Kagome thought to herself as she logged onto the computer and started searching for jobs. As Kagome searched on she was about to give up when she saw something that caught her eye.
“Personal Chef for Hire!” Kagome read on the screen. She clicked on the link and was surprised at what she saw. The same man that she had run into was looking for a personal chef. She read some info on the job description and smiled to herself.
’Hmm…I guess I could be a personal chef. The pay looks good. He is even willing to let the person stay there in a guest house, and plus he is good looking too.’ Kagome thought to herself but then kicked herself mentally again remembering that he could be married.
”Well, I guess I will give this a try.” she said to herself and tried to find a contact number.
”Sesshomaru-sama I ate all my food, can I have some dessert now?” Rin asked looking up at her adopted father.
“I suppose so. Wait till the waiter gets here to ask if there’s anything else he can do for you, and let him know what you want. I’m going to go talk to Uncle Inuyasha. Stay here and don’t get up unless you have to go to the bathroom, okay?”
“Okay Sesshomaru-sama.” Rin said in delight and waited for the waiter to come to the table.
Sesshomaru looked back at the little girl to make sure she stayed put while heading to the kitchen. When he arrived there he saw his younger half brother steaming with anger.
”Hey little brother, how are you doing?” Sesshomaru smirked to himself knowing that the answer was not so well.
”Ah, I don’t know. I keep getting these stupid cooks in here with their crazy attitudes. They drive me nuts. The last one just quit so now I gotta find a new one, even though she was considered the best around.” Inuyasha said remembering the way Kagome had quit, and getting annoyed again.
Sesshomaru knew that his younger brother was quite stubborn, and that Inuyasha probably was the one who drew the cooks crazy.
”Yea, anyway I wanted to ask you about that. What was her name?” Sesshomaru asked smirking at the skeptical look on Inuyasha’s face.
“Why?” Inuyasha asked back, not liking where this was going. He knew his older brother was looking for a new personal chef, and wasn’t sure if he was comfortable with any of his prior chefs working for his older brother.
”I was just wondering. She looked quite upset with you, the way she stormed out of here.” Sesshomaru said trying to get another rise out of his younger brother.
”Ah, that stupid Kagome Higurashi, she doesn’t have any reason to get mad at me anyway. She’ll be back, just watch.” Inuyasha said not realizing he had slipped up Kagome’s name to Sesshomaru.
Sesshomaru smirked to himself, he had found out the woman’s name.
”Well good luck with that.” Sesshomaru said and walked back out to the main dining area. When arriving back at his table he had noticed that Rin had finished her dessert.
”Are you ready to go home Rin?”
”Yes, Sesshomaru-sama.” Rin said taking Sesshomaru’s hand and leaving the restaurant.
Sesshomaru wasn’t worried about paying. He had a personal tab with them, and knew they would just take the money out. Getting into the car with Rin, they headed home.
When they arrived home Sesshomaru told Rin to go play and called his highest servant Jaken down to him.
”Yes, Lord Sesshomaru, what can I do for you?” Jaken said looking up at his master.
”Jaken I want you to do some research for me. There is this woman, Kagome Higurashi, she is considered to be one of the best chefs in Japan. I want you to find some information out about her.” Sesshomaru said looking down at his servant.
”Of course Lord Sesshomaru, I will get right on that.” Jaken said before disappearing to go look up some information about this Kagome Higurashi.
Sesshomaru was about to head to his bedroom, when he felt his phone vibrate in his pocket. He fished it out of his pocket and looked at the caller i.d. It read unavailable. ‘Hmm…’ he thought to himself and answered the phone.
”Hello?” Sesshomaru answered.
”Hello, May I please speak with Mr. Taishou?” Kagome asked back.
”This is he. How can I help you?”
”Hello Mr. Taishou, this is Kagome Higurashi. I saw you were looking for a personal chef, and was calling to tell you that I am interested.”
Sesshomaru smiled to himself. ’Fantastic‘ He thought to himself. He didn’t have to try to find her after all. She had found him.
”Umm yes, please do not mind me asking but are you busy at the moment?” Sesshomaru asked.
”Umm no. Why?” Kagome asked back.
“Well I was wondering if you could come and meet me at my house. I would love to meet with you, and we can discuss the job.” Sesshomaru answered back.
”Uh, sure, but I need your address.”
”Don’t worry about it. If you can tell me yours, I will send a driver for you.”
”Okay, it’s 459 Meiji Dori. Got that?” Kagome asked.
”Yes, thank you. A driver will be there in about 20 minutes.”
”Alright see you then, and Mr. Taishou?”
”Yes?”
”Thank you for the opportunity.” Kagome said smiling through the phone.
”Uh, you’re welcome. See you soon.” Sesshomaru said taken aback.
”Alright, bye.” Kagome said hanging up her phone.
”Bye.” Sesshomaru said doing the same.
Kagome rushed around looking for something to wear. ‘I guess I should bring an apron with me.’ She thought to herself looking around for one wishing she had not thrown her apron she usually wore down on the floor in the restaurant earlier. Finding one, she headed to her bedroom to change, and then brushed her teeth and brushed her hair and did it in the same style it had been in previously and then put a little make-up on. When she heard the buzzer to her apartment sound, she examined herself in her mirror, and then headed to her speaker.
”Hello?” She answered.
”Hello Miss Higurashi, this is Jaken, you don’t know me, but I work for Sesshomaru-sama. I am here to pick you up to bring you to his home.” Jaken said.
”Yes, uhm I will be down shortly.”
”Take your time.”
Kagome grabbed her purse and slipped on her shoes before heading out her door and down the stairs. When she arrived outside she was greeted by Jaken.
”Hello Miss." Jaken said as he nodded his head and opened the car door for Kagome.
Kagome nodded and got into the car. Jaken shut the door and entered the driver’s seat and looked at Kagome.
”Are you comfortable?” Jaken asked Kagome.
Kagome nodded.
”Alright, we will arrive at Sesshomaru-sama’s house in about 20 minutes.” Jaken said and started the car and took off.
The car ride had been silent, and Kagome was glad, she didn’t know what she would of talked about with Jaken. He didn’t seem to mind though; he didn’t seem like the talkative type. Kagome’s breath was taken away when they finally pulled up to the house, or more like mansion. It was so beautiful, she stared on in awe. It was built out of white stone, and had so many types of flowers around it, Kagome wasn’t sure if she would ever be able to name all of them.
“Please come this way miss.”Jaken said leading Kagome into the home.
“Lord Sesshomaru, we have arrived.” Jaken called to his master.
“Thank you, Jaken.” Sesshomaru said as he appeared into the foyer.
“Ah, you must be Ms. Higurashi. It is a pleasure to meet you.” Sesshomaru said nodding his head in greeting.
“The pleasure is mine.” Kagome said bowing back.
“Please come, I will take you to my kitchen. I have heard that you are one of the best chefs in Japan. I must know, where did you study?” Sesshomaru asked leading Kagome to the kitchen.
“Study?” Kagome asked.
“Yes, where did you go to school?”
“Uhm forgive me, but I did not go to culinary school.”
“No? Then where did you learn to cook?”
“Honestly? My mom taught me. She has studied all over the world, and has taught me. I have also learned from other places I have worked, but my mom is how I got my first job as a chef.”
“Hmm…interesting.”
Kagome stared at the back of Sesshomaru and hoped that telling him that she had not gone to culinary school would not hurt her chances at getting hired.
Sesshomaru could sense that Kagome was nervous and smirked. He already knew that she was a wonderful cook, for he had eaten at his brother’s restaurant on many occasions when Kagome had worked there. He had particularly liked her tiramisu.
When they entered the kitchen Kagome was amazed. This was a beautiful kitchen and very spacious. She would be honored to work in here if she got the chance. The floors were hardwood; the counter tops were green granite with some gray in them; the cabinets were made out of cherry; the walls were painted a neutral gray color, and sported beautiful green subway tile and the appliances were all fantastic. Kagome admired the double stainless steel apron sinks, and the two 40’ stainless steel gas cook tops, and the two ovens and the pantry and the beverage area and the integrated refrigerator and freezer that blended seamlessly into the kitchen's decor. She loved it all.
“I see that you like the kitchen.” Sesshomaru said noticing the sparkle in Kagome’s eyes.
“It is very beautiful.” Kagome said back in reply.
“Well here is my test. I will give you one hour to familiarize yourself with this kitchen. When I come back, I will start naming certain items, if you can show me where they are all located, then I will hire you, if not then I am afraid I cannot.”
“Alright.” Kagome nodded accepting the challenge, but wondering why he didn’t want her to cook for him.
“I will be back in one hour.” Sesshomaru said and exited the kitchen.
Kagome started walking around admiring the kitchen by herself. She went to work familiarizing everything in the kitchen. She looked in cabinets, drawers, in the fridge and freezer and in the pantry and on shelves. When she was done she still had time to spare and sat down on one of the bar stools that went with the island in the kitchen and pulled out a book from her purse and started reading. When Sesshomaru returned a half hour later, he was amazed to see Kagome waiting patiently for him reading instead of being caught still looking around, like all his past cooks had been.
“Done?” Sesshomaru said looking at Kagome.
“Yup.” Kagome answered back in reply looking up from her book with a smile.
“Alright then. Let’s get started. I want you to show me where the strainer is.”
Kagome laid her book down on the counter, and got up from the stool and walked around the island pulled the strainer from a cabinet underneath the island and put it on the counter top.
“Show me where the mixer is.”
Kagome walked over to the fridge and stopped just short of it and opened a cupboard and pulled out the mixer and laid it out on the counter. This went on for another 20 minutes and Kagome smirked when Sesshomaru wore a face of surprise. He had even asked her to put all of the items back where she had originally got them, and she had done so with ease.
Sesshomaru looked at Kagome in surprise. None of the previous cooks had memorized his kitchen as fast or as well as she had. Kagome had gotten every item out of its correct spot and had even remembered where they went when he had asked her to put them back.
Sesshomaru looked up at Kagome and smirked.
“You’re hired.”
