Chapter 1

Chapter 1:

Bound by Decision

It had been five hours since Kagome had last seen her mom… her time… her world. How foolish could she have been to not pick up on her mother’s signs? Now that she thought about it, they had all been there; plastered in front of her. Had she just taken the time to see her mothers face and really listen to her sad whispered words, maybe- just maybe she could have prevented this twist in her already complicated life.

Kagome had already decided that when Naraku was defeated she would remain in the past… but first she wanted to say her goodbyes. Now that would never be the outcome for her story.

She had tried to go back, but rather than feeling the familiar blue light engulf her, she hit solid ground. Tears rushing past the ones that had already stained her flushed cheeks. But she kept trying. Never truly admitting that her own mother would not allow her the chance of closing her chapter of life in her born time. For hours she sat there pounding into the earths muddy surface, not even bothering to shield herself as dark clouds descended and the earths tears fell.

---------------

When the passing villager told Inuyasha of what he had heard while passing by the well, Inuyasha instantly sprang to his feet knowing exactly what—or rather -- whom those sounds were coming from. Kagome.

The storm hadn’t even reached its peek, as the trees thrashed around and the wind carried out its angry howls into the night. The only visible light in the sky was the crescent moon, somehow finding the ability to glow before the darkest of clouds.

‘Damn it... why in the hell didn’t she come straight to the village?’

Inuyasha’s thoughts halted as he reached the wells clearing. His senses driving him mad with the despair and defeat that hung in the air. Even with the wind thrashing it’s furry around him and the rain slightly stinging his pale young face from the force, he could sense all the signs of tragedy that clung to the area… specifically the well.

Without another thought, Inuyasha dashed to it and saw Kagome’s body lying unconsciously at the bottom. The water had risen above her tiny frame, almost above her chin.

‘The Gods must be looking out for her. Had I come a minuet later, she might have drowned. Damn woman.’

Using his demon speed, he quickly snatched Kagome up into his arms bridal style, making no hesitation to retreat back to the warmth of the village and the healing hands of Kaede.

---------------

Kagome’s eyes opened slowly, praying to the gods that the previous little episode with her mother was but a dream… but as her light brown eyes took in the area that surrounded her, she knew her fears were now confirmed.

She didn’t care that her friends were there… she didn’t care that her cloths were covered in mud, all she cared about was the well and her missed opportunity with her family.

Quickly springing to her feet, she sprinted out of the old hut and towards the well. Her heart was racing, the slight sting from her right ankle ignored as her mission to get back to the well was her only focus. She could hear Sango calling after her, begging for her to return, but that didn’t matter now. All that mattered was the well.

Suddenly she could hear in the distance Inuyasha’s enraged voice, as he ran after her. But she only ran faster; air not seeming to be a necessity anymore. With the well in view now, her body had a mind of its own. Kagome didn’t even bother to stop at the wells edge to ready herself for the jump.

Then darkness. Nothing. No blue light. No sheltered storage room; just ground and open skies.
Her eyes didn’t have the tears she wanted to shed, her body didn’t have the energy to crawl back up and believe that she could just jump back home. It had been so simple before… never had she realized up until now how privileged she had been with such a luxury.

She looked down in defeat, and rather that seeing the dark earths surface she expected, she saw her yellow pack and the suitcase her mother had insisted Kagome bring with her.

With savage strength, her tiny arms lunged both her yellow pack and her suitcase out of the well. As if something possessed her, she made easy work of quickly getting back out of the well and tore open the suitcase.

Inuyasha stood quietly at the clearing, watching her, trying to get a clue as to what in the hell was happening with his friend. But she just sat there, looking down into the opened suitcase.

“Kagome… What is going on here? Are you ill? Has something happened?”

Kagome stood, turning and looking him in the face for the first time since her return. Her eyes no longer held the depression in those brown depths, but rather, an emotion he himself could not quite understand.

She made no movement towards him. The only movement he could see was her now white knuckles clutching two books and a package.

Her eyes searched his for what words her mind was trying to provide.

“I am no longer able to return to my time Inuyasha. There was a prophecy made by my grandmother from many centuries ago that gave strict instructions to seal off the well and keep me in this time. My mother had to seal off the well in order for me to carry out my destiny. I didn’t understand why she would go about it this way until I opened my suitcase and saw the letter she taped onto my history book.”

Kagome gently tore off the letter from her book and sat down. Inuyasha sat across from her and waited, knowing she was going to share her letter…

She used the moons prominent moonlight to read her mothers words;

“My darling baby girl,
I know by the time you read this, you will know that I sealed off the well. You must feel so angry with me… but please always remember, that even though it killed me to do it, I did it for you darling. I believe what grandma said. Your destiny must not be strayed from… Don’t think of this as goodbye, I am and will always be your mother. I will always love you dearly and think of you every second.
There is a small book that grandma said you had to have for your new journey. Though are not many pages, read them carefully. Also, inside the package is my real gift to you for your birthday. It will go lovely with your necklace. I hope you treasure them both. I tried to pack everything I thought you could use.
You mean the world to me Kagome, your father would have been so proud of the woman you have become.
The gods and your father will be watching over you honey as I pray for you from my end.
All my love,
-Momma”

A bitter-sweet smile crossed Kagome’s lips as she folded the letter and put them with the bookmark in her history book.

Inuyasha sat quietly awaiting her reaction. She met his gaze again and this time truly smiled.

“I’m home”

He smiled down at his friend as he stood to help her up.

“Welcome back.”

-----------------------

Kaede watched as the two walked back to the village, a smile placed of her aged lips. Kagome came up and gave her a tight hug.

“Thank you so much for everything you have done for me Kaede-san.”

Kaede’s smile grew as she embraced the young girl tightly.

“Child, ye never should bear thanks to this old woman. You are loved and respected by both myself and the people here. No matter the circumstance, you are always welcome in this village.”

Kagome looked at the elderly woman. She was so wise. It was as if Kaede knew everything that had happened to bring on her stress.

Sango and Miroku came in and gave Kagome a reassuring hug as well. Kaede stepped in and gently took Kagome’s arm, leading her away from her friends.

“Ye must rest for now child. You may tell us your tale in the morning.”

Saying goodnight to everyone, she went to the room Kaede had prepared for her. She opened her yellow pack and saw lots of ramen, a solar-powered flashlight, cooking supplies that she didn’t have there yet, lighters, matches, two first aid kits with extra bandaging and disinfecting ointments, tampons, markers, crayons and a few drawing pads with Shippo’s name on then in her mother’s fancy writing, and a few other things. In the side zippered part was a family photo of her mother, brother, grandfather and herself. Behind it was an older family photo of her mother, father, and her when she was a baby.

Kagome leaned in and kissed her parents photograph.

“You’re the best momma.”

After she put all her stuff back in the over packed yellow pack, she moved over to the suitcase and pulled out her extra cloths, panties, bras, hairbrush, toothbrush, shampoo, ingredients on how to make herbal shampoo, a small book on plants and how to use them to cure and cook, lots of toothpaste and every other thing a girl could need.

‘Yep, she’s always thinking ahead…’

Under all that was her history book, the package and her grandmother’s journal.

As Kagome laid down on her futon, a hard object hit her side.

“Ouch!!!!”

Grabbing into her pocket, she gasped.

‘The box!!! How did it get in my pocket?! I thought for sure I had accidently forgot it at home in my room!’

She opened it and looked at the piece of jewelry, remembering her mother’s words the day before when they went shopping. The strange couple engraved on the one side made Kagome sigh in defeat.

“Guess grandma didn’t foresee that I had horrible taste in guys. Ha! I’ll never find love.”

Her dull laughter couldn’t mask what she was feeling on the inside.

‘I’ll never find love…’

Kagome ran her fingers over the necklace as she dazed off in her thoughts.

The necklace began to grow warmer and warmer as Kagome thought of her secret longing for love. Before she knew it, the necklace was so hot she dropped it quickly to relieve her fingers from the scorch of the burn. Sucking on her fingers in an attempt to sooth the pain, she looked at the necklace in fury.

“What the hell was that?!!!’

Just as Kagome was about to try to pick it up again, the necklace began to glow. Kagome’s eyes watched entranced by the light as the necklace lifted off the hut’s floorboards, leading her out of her room.

‘Follow me…’

-The voice that whispers to me in such a soothing voice.-

‘Be free…’

-How could I even hope to not obey it?-

‘Sleep…’

-My eyes are heavy, how long have I been awake? Maybe I’ll close my eyes for just a few moments.-

‘Yes…’

-Just a few more moments…and then… then…-

She couldn’t stop to think, her body was moving on its own accord. No one in the village heard her as she left the hut and made her way out of the village.

Inuyasha was nowhere to be found.
