Helping A Friend
Author’s Note: Thanks for the ratings and reviews, they’re greatly appreciated! Umm... something about the way I wrote the near-end of this chapter doesn’t sit right with me. I don’t know, it doesn’t flow right or something. If there are any grammar specialists who notice anything or have a suggestion, let me know- I’m always trying to improve my writing. I’ve proofread it many times but something seems... un-flowable... lol. Enjoy!

Chapter II- Helping A Friend
Inuyasha awoke to the same smell of forest and dried blood as he had the night before. However another scent caught his nose, the smell of bacon and eggs. He shut his eyes and took in the smell as memories of when Kagome would cook breakfast entered his mind. Since her death, the hanyou had to fend for himself and eat whatever he could find; something that he had gotten used to after his mother had died. On the downside, he had been having a hard time finding anything to eat. Inuyasha quickly got out of bed before his pained memories got the best of him. He walked into the main room, surprised to see Abotto already awake and placing plates of food on the small table in the middle of the room. After putting the last plate down, he looked up at the inu and smiled. “Good morning.” Inuyasha’s eyes widened and he licked his lips and his mouth began to water at the sight of the food before him. “Hungry?” The half-demon nodded anxiously and sat down at the table. He didn’t waste any time before stuffing his face with the bacon, not caring that it just got off of the stove and was still hot. “I guess that’s a yes.” Abotto laughed.
Inuyasha suddenly stopped before finishing off what was left of the bacon. He looked up at Abotto who was standing beside the table smiling at him. Remembering that Kagome had taught him about something called ‘manners,’ the amber-eyed male pushed the plate toward the other male. “I’m sorry. Here.” he said, offering the food to the boy.
Abotto laughed again and sat down. “It’s okay, I made it for you,” he said pushing the plate back toward Inuyasha. The hungry hanyou grinned and began to eat again.
“Thank you.” Inuyasha got out in between bites. As he was eating, the half-demon couldn’t help but be a little surprised at himself. As hard as he tried, he couldn’t think of the last time he had used the words ‘sorry’ or ‘thank you.’ Again, he blamed his politeness on the death of his friends. Usually having the world against you led to one of two things. Either you would become over aggressive and wouldn’t trust anyone, or you would become submissive and afraid of the world. Inuyasha had turned into a little of both and was embarrassed about it; however, he decided that he could trust Abotto and was happy for that. He hoped that by staying with the boy, he could rebuild his confidence and maybe even have a permanent home, something which he has never had.
“So...” Abotto started, trying to break the silence. “I found you in kind of a bad state.” Inuyasha’s eating stopped and he looked down at the table and nodded slowly. He had expected Abotto to be curious about what had happened, especially after he had asked a few personal questions of his own the night before; however, the hanyou was prepared to tell the boy anything he wanted to know. “Were you attacked before I found you?” As soon as the words left his mouth, Abotto realized how dumb he sounded. *Were you attacked?* he thought to himself, *of course he was attacked, he had an arrow lodged in his back!* As Inuyasha opened his mouth to answer, he jumped at the sound of five hard knocks on the door. Abotto quickly got up and grabbed the other’s shoulder. He knelt down and whispered, “get in the other room, hurry!” Inuyasha looked at Abotto with a little fear in his eyes; nonetheless, he quickly went into the bedroom leaving the surprisingly calm boy in the main room.
A voice from outside boomed, “Boy! Open this door!” and more strong knocks followed.
Abotto groaned and walked over to the door, yelling. “Okay! Okay! You don’t have to break down the damn door.” Once he yanked open the door, he was face to face with a large group of villagers. Some had clubs, spears, and bows and they all had the same look of fury on their faces. “Good morning,” Abotto said feeling a little intimidated but in no way allowing himself to show it.
“Where’s the demon?” One of the men shouted from the group.
Abotto stood there, finally understanding why there was an angry mob outside of his house. They were here to kill Inuyasha and by the looks of it, anyone who defended the half-demon as well. Abotto decided then that Inuyasha was his friend and he had to protect him, even if it risked his own safety.
~*~
Inuyasha sat against the bedroom door, his breath shaky with fear. He knew that Abotto had promised him the day before that he wasn’t like the hanyou hating villagers; however, he didn’t know how the boy would react under being threatened. There was a possibility that Abotto would be frightened enough to let the villagers into the house. Inuyasha stood up and made up his mind, he wouldn’t let his friend suffer from the hands of ignorant humans. He wouldn’t let another one of his friends be hurt. Looking around the room, he spotted the Tetsusaiga in the corner. He went over and grabbed it before returning to his spot by the door, ready to attack at the first sign of trouble. He was determined to not let anyone hurt Abotto.
~*~
“The demon?” Abotto asked, scratching his head. “What demon?” The boy thought it best to try and play the ‘I’m innocent’ game in hopes that the villagers would believe him and leave.
One of the men tried to push past Abotto who stood in the doorway, firmly holding his ground. The man grunted out of frustrated and answered the boy. “Old Man Godo said he saw you carrying a demon into your house last night.” Thinking back to the story he told Inuyasha the night before, it seemed the villagers didn’t see any difference between half-demons and full-demons. Either way, they wanted to eliminate his friend and Abotto was not about to let that happen.
“Well Old Man Godo must be losing his eyesight.” Abotto argued. “I wasn’t even outside last night.” Now he decided to try the ‘I’m lying’ game.
“So then you wouldn’t mind if we looked around your house.” The man said, trying to push through the doorway, again, to no avail.
“Actually,” Abotto grunted as he pushed the man back, “I would mind since this is my house. You can’t barge in here, it’s called invasion of privacy. You’re just going to have to trust me.”
The man scowled before he and the rest of the villagers backed away from the door. “You know boy,” the man said through clenched teeth, “if there is a demon in here then we will have no choice but to take you both out and I don’t mean out to lunch.” At that, the group of angry villagers turned and left, now angrier than before.
“Hey!” Abotto shouted out the door, “I can honestly say that there is no demon in here!” Abotto slammed the door, turned around, and leaned against it. “Goddam lousy freaking pieces of shit,” he murmured. A relieved Inuyasha walked out of the bedroom with the Tetsusaiga over his shoulder, bringing a surprised look from Abotto who had forgotten about the hanyou’s sword. “See? I told you that you were lucky that I found you instead of them.”
“Yeah...” Inuyasha smiled faintly. “But you know you can’t hide me forever. Those people will be back and I don’t want to put you through that danger.”
Abotto’s eyes widened. “Put me through danger? I’ve had to fend for myself my whole life. I can handle danger!” Inuyasha was shocked at the similarity to his own life. He and Abotto had a lot more in common than he had thought. “I told you I had no family, so I provided for myself, I defended myself, I practically raised myself.”
“That’s really sad.” Inuyasha said with a sigh. “But I don’t want to get you into trouble. I mean, if they find out that I’m here, would you be able to fight all of them?”
Abotto chuckled lightly and gestured to a pair of daggers hanging on the wall. The daggers were about a foot long and very clean. It was apparent that the weapons were greatly cared for. “Those aren’t for decoration ya know. If those guys try to start something then I’ll use those,” Abotto explained and sat down on the couch.
“Okay.” Inuyasha smiled softly. The Tetsusaiga turned back to normal, which startled Abotto, and Inuyasha placed it against a wall. The boy made a mental note to ask about the sword later. The older man then sat down next to Abotto and grunted as he stretched. “I’m used to that kind of stuff, being a half-demon and all.” Inuyasha sighed. “Humans think I’m ‘different,’ demons think I’m a disgrace and have ‘tainted blood.’ I’m constantly forced to defend myself.”
“Yeah? Well that’s stupid. You shouldn’t be treated like that. There had to have been someone who was nice to you though.” Abotto said trying to cheer Inuyasha up. Instead, he received a very pained look from the golden eyes.
“There were a few people who cared for me.” Inuyasha shut his eyes and took deep breaths that gradually became shaky. He slowly opened his eyes, a river of tears threatening to flood them. “They were murdered though, I couldn’t protect them.” he whispered. The hanyou closed his eyes again and a stray tear fell down his cheek, followed by a stream of them. Abotto placed a calming hand on his knee, cursing himself for bringing up the topic.
“I... I’m...” Abotto stammered, not sure of what to say. The boy put an arm around Inuyasha’s shoulders, wanting to pull the hanyou closer and hoping that he wouldn’t resist. Needing the comfort, Inuyasha fell into the boy’s embrace and pressed his face into Abotto’s neck, soaking it with tears. He wrapped his arms around the smaller male’s waist, pulling himself closer to the boy. “I’m so sorry Inuyasha.” Abotto whispered, shivering as one of the tears ran down his own neck. Abotto ran a hand up and down the other man’s back, causing the hanyou to release a hot shuddering breath that slithered down Abotto’s neck and gave him goosebumps. “It’ll be okay,” Abotto whispered into a furry ear. Those three words affected the half-demon on a scale that Abotto couldn’t imagine. These last few days for Inuyasha had been anything but okay. Hearing his friend’s reassuring voice seemed to take away from the pain that was tearing at him. Inuyasha pulled away from the boy a little to look into his caring brown eyes. “Are you okay?” Abotto asked. After receiving a nod and a slight smile, he reached a hand up and rubbed his palm against Inuyasha’s cheek. The hanyou took the boy’s hand into his own and traced his thumb over the back of it. He then wrapped his free arm back around Abotto’s waist and pulled himself closer to him. Abotto sighed at the warmth that Inuyasha’s body was bringing and moved his other hand to the back of the inu’s neck and massaged it to soothe the hanyou.
A few minutes of silence passed before Abotto whispered Inuyasha’s name. Receiving no answer, the boy removed his hand from the loose grip it was in. He grabbed the hanyou gently by the shoulders and held him back to discover that he was asleep. With the frequency that Inuyasha had been sleeping since Abotto found him, it seemed that he hadn’t had much sleep since the tragic event. Abotto smiled at the sight and carefully got off of the couch. He gathered Inuyasha in his arms and carried him into the bedroom. Upon leaving the main room, Abotto did not notice the group of village children looking into the window who had witnessed the whole thing.
Abotto placed Inuyasha onto the bed carefully. He pulled the blanket up to the hanyou’s shoulders and knelt at the side of the bed. He folded his arms on top of the furniture and rested his head on top of them so he could watch the sleeping male. He liked how peaceful Inuyasha looked when he slept. He had no idea that the half-demon had all of these emotions bottled up inside of him. *That can’t be healthy,* Abotto thought to himself. He frowned, realizing that he did the same thing; however, now he had somebody to share his feelings with. He hoped that Inuyasha would listen to him and be compassionate just as he had done earlier. He figured that if anyone could understand him, Inuyasha would. Abotto’s eyes trailed down to Inuyasha’s blanket covered chest. He watched the fabric rise and fall with each of the hanyou’s breaths. The motion of it all was almost hypnotizing and the boy felt his eyes slowly closing. He gave the sleeping hanyou a small hug before he decided to settle into a slumber of his own.
~*~
When Inuyasha woke up, the sun was down and he was surprised to find himself in a bed. He looked around and found Abotto napping, halfway on the floor and halfway on the bed. He laughed at the cuteness of it and reached out to hold his hand. Apparently Abotto wasn’t into a deep sleep since the slight motion woke him up. He lazily looked up into golden eyes staring back at him. “Good morning,” Abotto said lazily.
Inuyasha laughed, “It’s night Abotto.”
“Oh... well then good night.” Abotto put his head back down and shut his eyes.
“Why don’t you take the bed tonight? I’ve hogged it since I got here.” Inuyasha suggested.
“No, you’re the guest. I’ll take the couch.” Abotto insisted, sluggishly standing up. “Good night Inuyasha.” Abotto smiled before stumbling towards the door.
“Good night Abotto.” He smiled back. Abotto left the room and Inuyasha rolled over. The hanyou cursed as he realized he forgot to ask Abotto a question that he’s been wanting to ask about the boy’s past. “Oh well.” Inuyasha yawned. “I’ll ask him in the morning.”

Meanwhile, in a nearby house... “You say you saw the demon?”
“Yes Daddy.”
“I’ll talk to the rest of the men in the morning, you just get some sleep.”
“You gonna kill ‘em Daddy?”
“Yeah I’m gonna kill that youkai and that lying little brat as well.”

Mater Tenebrarum::: You get a cookie for being the first reviewer! Yeah, I’m fine with PWPs and stuff- it just didn’t feel right having one as my first fic. I’m glad you like Abotto, I’ve slowly fallen in love with him lol. I’m using him in another fic I’m working on too so... yep. Hope you liked this chapter!
DemonLadySesshomaru::: Well I do like sweetness lol. Actually since it’s Easter there’s a lot of sweetness! I’ll keep it updated, promise! What’s regular for you though? I’m thinking anywhere from a week to a month but that’s a big gap. What do you think?
Rucina::: I felt so bad writing the last chapter! I’m not an angsty person at all so it was hard to do that to Inu and totally not like me to write something like that. It seems like it will be cute? Hmm... I don’t know, I tend to be very unpredictable and I like my stories that way too. We’ll see I guess ^_^
wolfluv::: Oops, I forgot to mention at the beginning that Inuyasha would be a little out of character. But I thought that the death of his friends would be enough to break him and make him vulnerable. But he’ll gain parts of the ‘old’ Inuyasha back, little by little.
