Chapter 2

Sesshoumaru watched intently as the young miko began to open her eyes, her body still trapped in the vortex of her aura whipping around her. He could not suppress the look of shock on his face when he noticed that her eyes were red, the color of blood. Thankfully, he mused, no one was looking at him to see his shock. Then she began to speak in a voice definitely not her own, it was something otherwordly, and the hair on the back of his neck raised up involuntarily.

“The battle of youkai and miko within the jewel grows dire, the tides are turning. The outcast youkai prince and the miko not of this world must combine their powers, for only together will they have the strength to overcome. They must work as one to defeat those in hate, lest hell be unleashed upon the earth for all of eternity if they fail. Unleash the dragon of hell to destroy the hell that walks the face of the earth, or else death will come to all.”

And with that, Kagome’s aura began to shine in a white brillance, forcing all to shield their eyes. Then is faded away slowly, and died down completely.

She dropped unconscious to the ground.

The group sat silently around the campfire, each trying to work out in their own minds the events of the past few hours, and throwing careful glances at the sleeping girl.

“It is said that a prophecy from a miko comes directly from the kamis, and it should never be taken lightly.” said Miroku, breaking the silence.

“Aye, Houshi, it is. Kagome has been given a prophecy that ye need to heed. I feel that her powers awakening and this prophecy are very connected. It could be that her powers would not awaken lest the fate of the world were at stake,” stated Kaede, “and I have never felt such a large amount of miko energy coming from anyone like this before.”

“Kaede, do you know who the prophecy was referring to? It said that the ‘miko not of this world’ and ‘the outcast youkai prince’ would have to defeat the hell on earth. I guess Kagome is the miko, but who are the others?” Shippo questioned cautiously.

“The hell that walks the earth is obviously Naraku, runt,” barked Inuyasha, “and now we get to traipse all over Japan looking for some random outcast prince! How are we supposed to know where to find him?”

“There is no need to search for him, for he is already near.” Sesshoumaru stated flatly, not even bothering to glance at the rest of the group.

“What? Who is it? How do you know what it means?!” Inuyasha responded.

“Silence your barking, halfbreed.”

“Fuck you! And why are you still here? Shouldn’t you be out sniffing the butts of the bitches at court?”

Inuyasha choked out the last word as he found himself pinned against a tree, with a very large hand clamped around his neck, and poison claws slowly sinking into his jugular.

“You dare insult me? And here I was just beginning to think that miko was getting you properly trained, pup. But as it stands, the prophecy has been spoken, and you are not instrumental in it, so you should just die now.” Sesshoumaru said flatly as he began releasing a small amount of poison into Inuyasha’s neck.

Inuyasha felt the poison hit his system, and struggled to free himself. Through his fuzzy mind, he vaguely registered someone screaming his name . . . and then he blacked out.

“INUYASHA!” “SESSHOUMARU, PLEASE STOP!” Kagome had awoken and was standing behind them, with her deep pink aura flared out around her, and her arm out ready to instinctually throw a blast of energy at Sesshoumaru to get him to release Inuyasha.

Sesshoumaru didn’t bother to turn his head, but did manage to suffer a glance back at the voice and the very angry energy he felt attacking his back. His eyes registered shock, yet his face was unchanged. He turned his eyes slowly back to Inuyasha and squeezed harder, determined to rid his existence of the most painful reminder of his past.

“Sesshoumaru.” Kagome said flatly, but forcefully. “Sesshoumaru, I know. I saw in my mind. Please let him go.”

He paused, suddenly becoming aware of a new scent permeating his nose. ‘No, it couldn’t be . .’ he though. ‘But how?’

He released his grip on Inuyasha, watching him drop limply to the ground, and turned slowly around to face the miko. He stared intently at her, sniffing the air carefully while the rest of the group breathed a sigh. Kagome’s aura calmed, and her shoulders sagged with exhaustion and relief.

“How is this possible?” he asked, sure that no one else but her knew what he was referring to.

“Let’s sit down and I will tell you everything that I saw while I was unconscious.”

_______

“I remember seeing red and black flames, and feeling like I was burning from the inside. I thought I was going to die. I couldn’t wake up, I couldn’t scream, I couldn’t do anything. And then I felt something, a presence. It’s hard to explain, but it felt like I was waiting on it, like it was the trigger for something bigger.” Kagome said quietly.

The group had resumed their former positions around the fire, except for the hanyou who was conscious now, and sulking in the tree next to the camp.

“When the presence came, my mind exploded. It all went white for a minute, and then all I could see in my mind was the sacred jewel. I could see the battle happening in the jewel, I could see Mikoriko and the youkai still battling within the jewel.”

“Then I heard her speak to me. I don’t know who she was, but she was very beautiful. She looked like an angel. She turned to me and spoke the prophecy to me. I remember every word of it. When the prophecy was spoken to me, she also showed me images. Images of what would happen if I would fail. They were horrible.” Kagome put her head in her hands as she willed them to the back of her mind, not wanting to loose her composure in front of the group.

“Anyway, she told me that I am being entrusted with great powers so I may fulfill the prophecy, and that I was to wake up now because the prince was waiting on me to help mend his heart so we can defeat Naraku. And then I woke up.” she said, looking into the fire, and replaying the memories in her mind.

“Do you know who the prince is, Kagome?” Sango questioned quietly.

“I am the prince.” Sesshoumaru said icily, and he continued to stare at the crescent moon. He felt certain that the kamis were toying with him, and had to repress the urge to kill everyone in the group to exact revenge on the gods.

There was a collective gasp among the group along with several shocked glances at him.

Miroku was the first to speak cautiously, “Sessshoumaru, you are an outcast? Why didn’t you say something earlier?”

“I have no desire to explain my situation. You will accept that I am the prince referred to in the prophecy and leave it at that.” he flatly replied, cutting off further questioning.

“Sesshoumaru was the presence that I felt in my vision,” Kagome said, hesitating before speaking the last part of her sentence, “and we must journey to the underworld and claim So’unga.”
