Torn In Two

Chapter One


“Two years. How much could have changed in two years?” Yusuke asked Kurama as they walked to Kuwabara’s place. They had only come back because they had another mission and this one apparently involved Kuwabara somehow. Yusuke had hoped he would have time to go and see if Keiko, was she still mad at him? Surely she wouldn’t be after two years. A lot of time had passed. Had she moved on and found someone new? If she had then he would be happy for her. He’d been the one to leave and end things, not her. They reached the door and knocked. After a minute Kuwabara answered the door.


“Uremeshi!” Kuwabara looked at the friend he hadn’t seen in over two years. Where the hell had the man been? It was getting to the point the man was barely in his thoughts. With so much going on and so much time passing it was hard to think about the guy. Even with what was going on, it was strange seeing the former detective standing in front of him along with the fox.


“How’s it going Kuwabara?” he asked. He saw that his best friend hadn’t changed at all. He was still ugly with a bad hair style. He took the time to inspect the place as Kuwabara led them into the livingroom. The house felt nice and cozy. Yusuke looked around the room and noticed that the house was not what he was expecting from his friend. There were a lot of pictures along the wall of new friends and family. The place was clean and tidy, nothing out of place.


“Not much has changed here. How long are you here for?” Kuwabara asked. What were they doing coming by here? A tingle went up his spine, something was up but what? He wasn’t going to believe that he was the first person they’d want to see when they returned. Had Kurama went to go see his family? Had Urameshi went to go visit Keiko or his mother?


“We’re just waiting for Koenma to let us know about another assignment. All we know is that we had to meet him here. He said something about having to talk to you as well.” Kurama said. Kurama really wanted to see his family. He missed them and had thought of them often. He knew that his mother was being taken care of and if anything had happened Koenma would have let him know. Did Shiori miss him? Perhaps when this was done he’d be able to drop by and say hello. How was his stepbrother doing?


“Well the toddler had better not want me to fight more demons for him. I got a much bigger, more important situation on my hands right now.” Kuwabara beamed as Yusuke and Kurama looked at each other with puzzled looks. “ Yukina sweety! Would you come in here for a minute?” He was glad they’d come back now so they could see for themselves. Him and Yukina were so happy, now his friends could learn it from them.


Still looking at each other Yusuke and Kurama whispered “Sweety?” They knew that they were together but to hear Kuwabara call the woman and endearment was just too weird. They looked up as the teal haired girl now walked into the livingroom. And she answered to it. Both of their mouths dropped. Yukina was very much a woman, a woman sporting a big round belly. The koorime had matured some in the face and was now pregnant.


“Kuwabara!” Yusuke shouted. “Congrats man. And here I always thought that you would die a virgin. I guess even dorks like you get laid.” Hell even he hadn’t gotten a chance to experience the act of an sexual encounter. He was still a damn virgin and Kuwabara was getting some regularly, which one was the bigger loser? It was hard to imagine the two going at it but to each his own.


“Hey Uremeshi, you’re just jealous but thanks. We got married a year ago. The doctor told us it is to be a boy. I just know that he is going to be just as good looking as his dad.” Kuwabara said with a big grin on his face. Yukina had been wanting a boy since she’d never been able to find her brother. It was the one thing he couldn’t give her no matter how much he tried. It was a constant shadow over their happiness.


“Riigghhtt.” Yusuke replied. “So, have you seen Kieko lately?” He was still hoping to see her before they left out again. He wanted to make peace between them. He didn’t know how he would react if she hated him. She’d forgiven him for leaving the first time, he could only hope that she’d be over it and they could keep their friendship.


“Yeah, she came by last week and brought something for the babe. She didn’t say too much. She has been really busy from what I heard. She is looking pretty good though.” Not that it’d do the toushin much good. From what he’d heard Urameshi had dumped the girl before leaving. It was time for Keiko to move on and find someone that would love her the right way. The way every lady deserved.


“Did she mention me?” Yusuke asked. If she’d ask anyone about him it’d be Kuwabara since he was the one that knew about their missions. She’d come to the man for any information to be had. What if she hadn’t? Not that he’d blame her. He had walked out on her again. A girl wouldn’t wait forever before moving on. Plus Keiko was a beautiful girl, she’d find someone real fast.


“Nah. She pretty much has forgotten you.”


“Oh well. I guess that is good.” ‘Had she really forgotten me? Nah! She would never. We have been friends for far too long. But then again I did break her heart two years ago. Who has she been busy with? Is she with a guy? If she is he had better be good to her or he will get a spirit gun up his ass.’ In a way he was happy she’d moved on but he did miss her at times.


They sat back and talked for a few hours. Discussing the case they just finished, about Kuwabara’s job, his new wife, and the babe on the way. They were interrupted when the front door opened. They had been so distracted that they hadn’t heard the car pull up. Yusuke and Kurama stood up ready to fight as the intruder burst in. They could feel the powerful aura filling the whole apartment. Had someone managed to revive Sensui? The energy was much like that only more powerful; a sacred power. If they had they would die before he got a chance to succeed in killing any of the people in this house.


“Kuzuma, have you seen my...” she stopped as she turned the corner to see the two men standing in the livingroom. Kagome paused seeing her cousin had company. The red head was cute but there was something about him that she just didn’t like. ‘Never date a man prettier than you are!’ The dark haired one on the other hand was great looking and had that bad boy image going on. She tried to give her best smile showing off even white teeth.


“What the fuck?” Yusuke said. He was expecting some huge ass threat to come rushing into the room. The power he had felt was immense. He sure as hell didn’t expect some sexy chick to turn around the corner. When the hell did they start building them like that? She was a tad short but had long raven hair and stunning blue eyes. The smile had butterflies going haywire in his stomach. Kuwabara walked over to the girl and put his arm around her shoulder. He walked her over to his two friends. Yusuke knew that this had to be the same girl he had bumped into two years ago. She was beautiful now that he could see her face. Who was she?


“Guys, I want you to meet my cousin, Kagome. Kagome, these are two of my friends that I was telling you about.” Kuwabara made the introductions. Her eyes studied both men. They were demons. Powerful ones too. She definitely wouldn’t let her guard down around these two. Kuwabara had told her stories of him and his friends. About the tournament that they fought together in and how they had won. It was hard to believe that the same bad ass looking guy in front of her was the one that Kuwabara respected as a fighter so much.


“Kuwabara, just how much did you tell her about us?” Kurama asked. He could tell that she was a miko but she was still a human. Humans weren’t allowed to be involved or know what took place between the human world and the Reikai. Hell most humans didn’t know about the Reikai until they went there. Enma preferred them to remain ignorant of the spiritual world completely. The less they knew the better it was to keep order.


“Oh don’t worry. She has seen her fair share of demons too. She came here right before you two left the last time.” Kuwabara wasn’t sure how much he should tell them. It wasn’t his place to explain about her past or who she was. If Kagome wanted them to know then she’d tell them. He knew her well enough to know that she liked to keep her life private.


‘So it was definitely the one that had bumped into me.’ Yusuke thought as him and Kurama sat back down and the girl took a seat next to the pregnant Yukina. Everybody was quiet. Yusuke was looking at the girl. She had some nice long legs. She was wearing a pair of black jeans and damn if they didn’t show every curve. The girl looked over at him and caught him scooping her out. There eyes meet and Kagome rolled her eyes at him. Yusuke was just about to ask Kagome something when Koenma appeared.


“Hello everybody. Kuwabara, Yukina let me go ahead and congratulate you on your upcoming arrival. And as soon as all of us get here there is something I need to discuss.” Koenma eyed the swelling belly with much contemplation. Was the child a koorime offspring or from a union with the human male? He had to wonder because he’d never thought Kuwabara would know how to become sexually involved with a girl. Hell for all they knew the man had rubbed against the woman as they lay in bed and now thought he’d done a man’s job.


“Well who else are we waiting for?” Yusuke asked. He could only think of one other person that Koenma would want to attend and they had left him sulking in the Makai. If Koenma was bringing the team together again then it was another important mission. Would that would take some time to get done.


“Hn. I wonder.” Hiei said. He was standing next to the window. Of course Yusuke hadn’t seen him come in, he was too busy staring at the raven haired girl. A stunt like that would get the fool killed. She was nice looking but no woman was worth letting an enemy come up unexpectedly. He should have stayed in the Makai and let Koenma know he was tired of being called upon when the toddler needed something done.


“Aaahhhh. Hey man don’t be sneaking in my house like that!” Kuwabara screamed. Yukina covered her mouth to hide a smile. Hiei had done this a number of times. And every time he had caught Kazuma off guard. She would have thought that he would have gotten used to it by now.


“Well, now that we are all here. We need to get down to business.” Koenma crossed his arms remembering the last time he’d addressed them all while together. Time sure was flying by. Would they accept this mission as well? He was almost certain they would.


“Hey wait a minute. What about her? She doesn’t need to be here.” Yusuke said while pointing to Kagome. She took that as an insult and stuck her tongue out at the moron. He shrugged at her, this was business. They didn’t someone uninvolved hanging around getting involved. Keiko had done that and her life had been put in danger just by knowing them.


“Actually Yusuke, she does. Kagome is one of the vital assets that we need in order to complete this mission. I won’t get into too much details now. The only thing I can say is that a powerful demon has sided with someone, a human we believe, to take over the demon world. We all know that the barrier between human world and the demon world is no longer there. But with Enki winning the tournament he has made it so that demons can not hunt humans and keep them safe. Well these people that we are up against wants to kill Enki so that the demons can hunt humans and take over their world as well. We now know that the last mission that you were on Yusuke is connected to this one. The same people are behind both. We don’t know their names yet. My people are looking into it as we speak. Right now though, we must all go to Genkai’s temple. She has the other person we need there with her. Once we have all the information we need everybody will go to the demon world to fight this. Of course, Kuwabara you can remain at Genkai’s. We don’t want to do anything to put Yukina and the babe in jeopardy. After we are gone Genkai will help you look after Yukina until the babe is born. We all know that when the time comes Kuwabara will be so out of it that the poor girl wouldn’t make it to a hospital.” The whole group started laughing at Kuwabara.


“Hey that’s not funny. Everybody just quit picking on me okay.”


“It’s alright Kazuma. I’m sure this Genkai will be able to pick you up off the floor after you faint.” Kagome said. She stood up and put her hand to her head and pretended to faint. The whole group continued to laugh when Koenma cleared his throat they quieted down.


“Alright everybody. We can pick on Kuwabara more when this assignment is done. We meet at Genkai’s in one hour.” he said and disappeared.


Yusuke took this time took look back over at Kagome. She was standing up now and he was getting a good view of her body. Her hair was like the night sky with no moon to light one’s way. Her eyes showed so much depth. He looked a little closer and he knew he could she her fiery spirit glowing there in her sea colored eyes. Kagome turned and caught the one they had called Yusuke staring at her again. Now he was just pissing her off. She put her hands on her hips.“ You see something you like?”


“Actually, yeah I do,” he replied honestly. Yusuke could see the rise and fall of her chest. Really it was the constant moving of her breast that he was looking at. He wanted to just touch her. Damn he really needed to get laid. The sudden urges he was having couldn’t be good.


“Well I suggest you take a picture because it will last longer and that picture is as close as you will ever get buddy.” She hadn’t given it up yet and wouldn’t. Not until she met the right one for her. He was out there she just hadn’t found him yet. She’d thought it was Inuyasha for awhile but had been wrong there too. She’d make sure before giving herself to a man.


“Wanna bet honey?” Yusuke could see the flush rush to the girl cheeks. Oh this was going to be fun. A mission with this girl by his side for who knew how long. He knew he had to have her. He liked the way she stood up to him. In a way it reminded him of Keiko but he didn’t see this one nagging to get her way.


“Come Kagome. Let’s go pack.” Yukina said grabbing the girl’s arm. As she was leaving the room she took one final look at the guys. They were all looking at her of course. The moron had a smirk on his face. Gods, she wanted to go deck it clear off of his face. The one who they never mentioned his name also was glaring at her. She could feel his crimson eyes burning right into her. This was definitely going to be an interesting trip. Before she turned the corner to go upstairs she extended her middle finger to the guys and walked out of sight.


“That is Kags for ya. She is tough for a girl. So you guys, who do you think the other person is?” Kuwabara asked.


“I don’t know but I’m willing to bet that it is another human. The big question is, is what makes them so important?” Kurama answered. What could be so special about the miko that Koenma would bring her into a mission. Killing demons easily was one thing but himself, Yusuke and Hiei could do that on their own. So why bring the girl in?


“I don’t know either but if it looks as good as that one then I’m definitely looking forward to working this case.” Yusuke said. Looking at her would be better than looking Hiei or Kuwabara all the time. She might tempt him to distraction if she kept wearing tight clothes.


“Hn.” Hiei said. ‘We shall see who gets her first.’ He felt the power the miko had been producing and had felt it rise when Yusuke mad her angry. Only someone of her stature was worthy of him. She was not for Yusuke, the boy would be better off with someone like Keiko. Obviously the detective wasn’t happy unless he had a woman ordering him around like a second mother. He never could understand why the male had put up with Keiko’s attitude.


“Hey man that is my cousin you are talking about.”

“Sorry man, but you have to admit she is fine.” Yusuke replied. Especially considering who’s family she came from. Then again Shizuru was the dude’s sister and she wasn’t to bad on the eyes either. Where Kuwabara had come from he couldn’t quite figure out.


Kurama just shook his head at the two guys. “Let’s get going shall we.” They didn’t have time to be ogling a female. She was nice looking but she was just another female. He’d seen some better and worse. If he had an hour then he might just run by and take a quick peek at his mother just to satisfy his curiosity. Shiori would want him to stay if he showed himself but he wanted to see that she was well before heading off for another long mission.




They all arrived at Genkai’s and headed up the stone steps exactly one hour and ten minutes later. Yusuke was the first to reach the door having ran up the steps. He was anxious to see the old hag again. Was his old mentor still alive and bitchy as ever? As he slid it open his eyes met a familar brown pair that he hadn’t seen in two years.


“Hey what’s the hold up?” Kuwabara asked making his way to the door. He looked inside and saw why Yusuke had stopped dead in his tracks. “Whoa! This should be interesting.” Yukina reached up and slapped him in the back of the head. “Sorry dear.” What the hell was Keiko doing here? Had the girl stopped by to visit Genkai?


Yusuke walked inside followed by the others. His eyes never left Keiko’s. ‘What the hell is she doing here? This is not how I pictured our reunion. I wonder if she is still pissed at me.’ So much for having time to sit down and talk to her about things. Maybe after the meeting he could find out how she was doing. She hadn’t slugged him yet so that was a good sign. They all sat in a circle surrounding Genkai and Koenma, except for Hiei.


‘Yusuke looks good. I thought I was prepared to see him, but now that he is here I feel like I want to puke. I’m so nervous. I need to tell him that I forgive him. I realize that he was right before. How will things be between us?’ Keiko thought. Two years was a long time to do some serious thinking. She saw Yusuke still looking at her and lowered her head to look at the floor.


“Okay. Now we are going to discuss everything we need to know. And I believe the best place to start is with Kagome.” Everybody looked at the girl. “Now, Kagome is the high priestess Kikyo reincarnated. Over five centuries ago Kikyo was killed by a demon named Naraku. She had the jewel burned with her. In doing that the Shikon no Tama was embedded in Kagome’s side. Now some years ago, Kagome was transported through time and the jewel ripped from her body. Kagome was sent back to fuedal Japan fifty years after the priestess was killed. Of course before she died she fell in love with a hanyou and thought he had betrayed her. She pinned him to a tree right before she died. Now once Kagome was in that time, demons wanted what she had. She released the hanyou from his prison and sought out his help. Now for some reason” Koenma faked a cough and eyed the miko in question. “the jewel was shattered into hundreds of pieces. Kagome had no choice but to find them all and complete the jewel. She did so with the help of the hanyou. That hanyou was named Inuyasha who only wanted the jewel so he could become a full demon. Luckily, he changed his mind. Now that whole time they searched for the jewel shards that same demon, Naraku, was after them as well. To make a long story short, Kagome and her friends succeeded in getting all the pieces from Naraku and killed him. In doing this, Kagome was allowed one wish. Please inform us what you wished for Kagome.”


Kagome looked around at everybody and said, “ I wished for the jewel to be broken in half. One half in me and the other half in someone who is pure of heart. Someone who is always protected. Someone who if they knew they had it would never try and use it.” She had wanted the jewel to be safe. With Kikyo gone there had been no one strong enough to purify it in order for it to be released from this world. While she could keep it from being tainted by malice she didn’t have enough power to see it forever gone. She’d thought if someone else pure of heart had half then it’d be safer. “Well, obviously that person is sitting here with us. The other half is in Keiko.”


Gasps were heard throughout the room. Yusuke looked right at Keiko. Yusuke made a desparate attempt to clean out his ears. He knew he had heard wrong. No way, his Keiko, was someone that they needed. How the hell had she been chosen? “How the hell is that possible?”


“If you shut up dimwit, it will be explained.” Genkai said.


“Leave me alone you old hag!”


“Anyway, the jewel appeared in Keiko two years. Obviously it couldn’t have appeared in her any sooner. If she have had it in her when she went to the first tournament all the demons would have felt it and they would have killed her. Once I realized it I brought her here to Genkai’s to train.” Koenma knew that the toushin would be upset that it had been kept from him. Yusuke looked over to Keiko. He knew how it was like to train under Genkai.The old bitch never gave a person a break. He felt sorry for her all of a sudden. “Now as I’ve said earlier. The same people that tried to assassinate Enki are the same ones we are dealing with now. I believe that they are still going to try and kill him. But at the same time they are creating a demon army to invade the human world. If they succeed than the human world as we know it will become hell on Earth. We can not allow this. Now my people have informed me of who is behind all of this. It is a demon and a human that we have believed to be dead. The demon is Naraku himself.”


Kagome gasped. “ No we killed him! I saw him die!”


“No Kagome. It turned out that he was not dead and waited for you to make your wish. He knew that he could not win with you still around. He waited until you were sent back to your own time and killed Inuyasha and your friends. They didn’t stand a chance. I’m sorry.”


Kagome felt the tears start to flow. Inuyasha could not be dead. He had to be alive.“You lie!”she shouted. Aura flowed through the room and everybody jumped as the girl panted. She got up and ran out of the temple. Yusuke was about to get up and follow the girl when Yukina beat him to it. They watched the teal haired girl disappear through the doorway and continued.


“She will be fine. She is just in shock. If anybody knows how to calm her down it is Yukina. Now the human, who we also believed to be dead, is none other than our favorite Sayko. It seems that he didn’t die when that stadium collapsed. How he has been hiding I don’t know. Now, once again you all will be going to stay at Yomi’s. He has already been informed of all this and is awaiting your arrival. Now we don’t know exactly what Kagome and Kieko are supposed to do on this mission but we do know that Naraku is still looking for the jewel. So I will strongly suggest that you all keep both girls safe. If he should get a hold of the jewel he will become unstoppable. Now you all leave in the morning. Try and get some rest. After tonight I fear that our lives will never be the same.” he disappeared.


Kagome was sitting on the stone steps holding her face in her hands. He couldn’t be dead. She continued to cry and looked up into the sky.


*Flasback*


“Inuyasha!” Kagome threw the jewel to him. She saw that Kiyko was a few yards away. Sango and Miroku were fighting off Naraku’s minions. They almost had him. Naraku would pay for all that he had done to the ones she loved. Inuyasha caught the jewel in his hand and looked at it. He had it in his hand. If he used it then he would be a full demon and then kill Naraku in one swift blow. He looked over at the girl who threw it to him. It was there in her eyes. She loved him for being what he was. A hanyou. Even though she knew that it was Kiyko who had his heart she still loved him. He would not do that to her. He turned his head to Kiyko who was sending a blast of pure energy at Naraku.


“Kiyko, here.” he yelled.


She turned to look at him. She reached for the jewel catching it in her and and turned to the demon she was fighting. Naraku saw what the miko was planning to do. He could see the hate in her eyes. Before he could back away the miko had pierced his heart with her hand while holding the jewel. Naraku gasped for air. A flash of light shot out of every orifice.


“Go to hell Naraku. Leave us all to our lives the way they were before you ruined them. Let us all live in peace.” Kiyko shouted as she pulled her hand out of his chest. The jewel in her hand, despite the blood on it, shone as bright as a star in the midnight sky. Naraku fell to the ground and didn’t move. Sango and Miroku finished the demons off just in time to see Kiyko pull her hand out of Naraku. They ran over to where Kagome stood as he dispersed, turning to ash.


“We did it. We finally defeated him. Miroku look at your hand.” Sango yelled. Miroku unwrapped the beads that kept his curse under control and smiled. The curse was broken. He could live a nice long life. His first instinct was to grab Sango’s hand.


“Sango, marry me? Marry me tomorrow?” he smiled as he saw a blush sweep across her face. This was what he wanted.


“Oh brother. We just fought a major battle and all you can do is think of yourself. You must have forgot that Sango lost her brother again because of Naraku.” Kagome smacked the back of his head so hard his face meet the dirt. They started laughing and didn’t stop until Inuyahsa and Kikyo walked over to them. Kikyo held out her hand that had the Shikon no Tama in it in one solid beautiful piece.


“It is time for you to make a wish Kagome. And I’m afraid it is also time for you to go back to your own time. Your job here is done.” Kikyo said and handed the jewel over to the girl. Kagome took the jewel and looked at it for a minute. She wanted it so that no one would ever try and use the jewel again. She made her wish and all of a sudden the jewel disappeared. She was about to say something when she was trapped in a gulf of light. ‘No I can’t be going back yet! I didn’t get a chance to say goodbye.’ Kagome opened her eyes and she was staring up at the roof of the well house. She dropped to her knees and began to cry.


*End Flashback*

When Yukina appeared beside her Kagome wiped a tear off her cheek. She was hurting so much. How could she concentrate on this new mission knowing that all of her friends were gone? She’d left them behind to handle Naraku alone. How could he have killed them? Why hadn’t Inuyasha been able to kill the evil monster?


“I’m sorry. I wish I knew what to say to make you feel better.” Yukina said as she touched the girl’s hair. “So did you love this Inuyasha?”


“Well I thought I did. We argued a lot and he saved my life so many times. But deep in my heart I knew that he was still in love with Kikyo. I may have been her reincarnation ,but I was never her. He would never let me forget that. I think it is more the fact that I never got to say goodbye. See, once I made the wish I was back in my time. If I had known that it was going to happen like that and that he was going to die than I would have said it long before the final battle. Or what I thought was the final battle.”


“There was no way you could have known what was going to happen. I don’t want to bother you too much about it but you are my family now. I don’t think that this Inuyasha guy would want you to just sit back and mourn him. I’m sure he knew how strong you are and he would want you to do what is necessary. I’ll leave you alone so you can think. We leave first thing in the morning.” Yukina said and turned to walk away.


Kagome sat there longer thinking about Inuyasha. He would never be dead to her. She would always love him in some way. Naraku would pay dearly for what he had done. This time she would make sure his bloody heart was in her hand and then she would stomp the hell out of it. But for now she had to concentrate on completing this mission. She got up to go to her room and ran into the fire demon. His red eyes burning holes into her soul. What was he doing here? She shifted to the side so she could walk around him when he grabbed her arm. “Hey pal if you want to keep that arm I suggest you let go,” and she pulled her arm free. “What the hell is your problem?”


Hiei looked at the girl and gave a smirk. He knew that he normally didn’t care for humans but he knew that this girl was going to make this mission interesting. That was the main reason why he hadn’t told Koenma to shove his binky up his ass and went back to the Makai and continue with his life. “Since you have half of the jewel in you I would suggest that you stick close to one of us . We wouldn’t want you to end up in the wrong hands.”


Something told Kagome that he wasn’t thinking about her being in the wrong hands. Just in his. ‘Well shorty you can just dream on.’ “Hey bud, you aren’t the only one here who can protect me. And besides, I can take care of myself. What makes you think I need or for that matter would accept your help?”


Hiei didn’t reply he just disappeared into the trees. Kagome rolled her eyes at the thought of the fire demon watching over her like she was a child. She didn’t need any of them. She had trained hard in her two years back. Now she didn’t need a reason to purify something. She would be glad to do some target practice on the short one if he didn’t leave her alone. She walked back inside and headed for her room to get some sleep. She knew that tomorrow was the start of a new life for her.
