A/N: Sorry for the looong wait. To answer some questions yes, Kagome is stuck in the past but there will be a twist in the future chapters. She will meet Youko from the past and a young Hiei. I want to warn the readers again; this is a dark fic. Youko is and will be a murdering and thieving kitsune and Hiei will be different too. Furthermore Kagome has changed, she will no longer behave as the young and happy fifteen-year old she once was.
Oh and sorry for spelling and grammar mistakes, I still haven´t searched for a beta and english is not my native language. Now enjoy.
Fire. Everything was under fire. The heavy scent of burned wood filled the air. Women and children were screaming in terror and animals were running aimlessly. Struggling, weapons clashing against weapons, groans, insane laughter. The sounds were extending for miles. Yet the only thing she could hear and feel was her own frantic heartbeat and the warm blood on her hands and damp clothes.
Kagome woke up with a start. That damn nightmare again. She was still in the hot spring and fell asleep but not before she created a barrier around her. She would be foolish not to have done so now that she was by herself. No one was here to protect her if someone would attack. Well, she was not all alone. The miko looked back to the hut where she stayed for the time. There in front of the entrance lay a white and a brown wolf.
When Kouga found her travelling alone two years ago, he insisted that she take Chi with her. The male wolf was huge and had dark brown fur with almost black eyes. He was trained to protect the cubs and could fight viciously but still accepted her as his new mistress without a hitch. Only almost one week after getting Chi, Ayame found her by scent with her own pack. Kouga didn´t want to mate with Ayame but they were still on friendly terms so he informed the wolf princess of Kagomes state. Ayame being concerned about Kagome brought also a wolf with her. Yuki, the white mountain wolf with blue eyes was trained like Chi only she was female. Both wolfs are intelligent and she could ride on them while hunting or patroling. They also understood the miko by body language. She was really grateful to Kouga and Ayame, they proved to be true friends. Even if Kouga still wanted more from her.
She finished bathing and doned the traditional miko garbes. It was easier if she wanted to avoid attracting attention while going into a human village and she needed to purchase food and clothes. Then she combed her long hair and let it loose. The long tresses really could use a good trim, now that they reached her thighs. Strapping a dagger to her waist, the quiver on her back and taking her bow in her hand she whistled for Chi and Yuki. It was time to go.

He was running for hours now but the damn youkais were still after him. The snakes poison was affecting his body too strong now and he couldn´t go on any longer. He tried to hide in the underbrush but the worm youkai captured him at his ankle and draged him back. The youkais laughed at the small and battered form. A boar youkai with an axe sneered down at him “Finally! We have the forbidden child. Now you die!” “Yes! Kill him now, I´m hungry”! Yelled another beast. Hiei closed his eyes in defeat and waited for the killing blow. Before the boar could swing his axe an arrow hit his body and disintegrated it in a pink light. The light caused a chain reaction and before any of the other youkai could escape they dissolved too.
Hiei didn´t know what happened but he was still alive. He could hear someone running and felt a cold snout nuzzle him. Kagome arrived on Chis back to see Yuki over a huddled form, scenting it. She knelt down to turn the figure onto his back. It was a small male youkai and his breathing was laboured. The maturity of his aura belied his small size and youthful appearance and he was in great pain.
The youkai growled in his defense and opened his red eyes which were glazed over. Was he dreaming or was it really a human miko above him. If so then why was he still alive? He could feel the pain of the poison so he had to be alive. Kagome brushed his hair out of his face, he was sweating strongly and needed medical treatment immediately. “Shhh”, she soothed him “I´m going to help you. If I wanted to harm you I could have already done so.”
The small youkais growl stopped as he passed out. Kagome pullud Hiei on Chi, he was larger than Yuki, so both could ride on him and she could hold on to the youkais body. The wolfs were really fast so they were back in her hut in no time. She pulled him onto her futon and cut the rags from his body to clean his wounds. The antidote for the poisen was given to him in liquid form so he just needed to rest to get better. He would get more in about two hours and in the meantime she could go to the village as she had planned. The miko covered him with a blanket and put a wet cloth onto his forehead. Kagome got up and went to Chis side and patted him on his head. “Please protect him, I´ll be back soon”. He whined until she scratched him behind his ears then left with Yuki.

About almost two hours later the miko was back with three bundles full of chlothes and food. She didn´t have money but the nearest village gave her everything she needed. In return she healed the sick ones, protectet them from wild youkais and assisted them wherever she could. They respected her, some even feared her just because of her choosen companions which are wolf youkai. She couldn´t blame them though; almost everyone was afraid of things and situations they couldn´t comprehend and the people in this era were worse than the ones of the future. Ignorance could be very dangerous.
Kagome went to Hieis side to give him the second dose of medicine. While she gave him the liquid he woke up and glanced at her warily. “Why are you doing this, aren´t you a miko?” She diped the now dry cloth in cold water and put it on his still feverish forehead again. “Yes” she answered him hesitantly “I´m a miko but not a traditional one.” He was still watching her as if she hadn´t said anything. The priestess sighed and stroked Yukis head which was now nestled in her lap. “Look, you are hurt and I want to help you because I can. I will answer your questions when you are feeling better, but for now just rest”. She turned her head as Chi whined and then laughed. “Oh, don´t be jealous! It´s late so lets sleep.” Going over to the pallet on the other side both wolfs sprinted to her side immediately and curled up around her body. She giggled as the fur tickled her sensitive skin but was soon lulled to sleep by the soft growls of her wolfs.
Hiei watched the scene in wonder. What a strange human. He had never seen a human who was so relaxed around youkai not that he had much contact to humans. The bandits who raised him held humans to satiate their lust or hunger hence all the humans he saw were terrified of youkai. Before he could continue to mull over the strange miko the medicine took effect and he fell asleep.
