Waking Up
Chapter Two
Kagome slowly came to, a light shining down on her face. Confusion set in, fear that she had been killed by the one man she loved. The last coherent thing she could remember was looking up to see Sesshoumaru striking him. What had become of the group, her friends? A terrible feeling started to sink in her heart, something had gone wrong. Why had it happened? A lump swelled deep in her throat at the memory. Surprisingly her body didn't feel like it had been injured recently. Instead her muscles felt like lead, sluggish. Her head rolled to the side, tension filled her shoulders.
A nurse gasped and ran over to peer at her. Kagome felt like cursing at the woman, fingers pried her eyelids open. The light caused pain to shoot through her skull. Several machines were hooked up to her, beeping was heard. Voices soon filled the room causing her head to ache more. Thoughts of telling them to shut the hell up came to mind. How had she gotten back to her era? They had been days away from the well.
An elderly man came to the bed, peering at the lines being written out by the machine next to him. "Seems you are finally awake, can you hear me?" He saw her try to nod her head, "Good, don't try to speak. You're throat will end up sore, it has been awhile. We weren't sure if you'd ever wake up, it was begining to look hopeless. Do you have a name girl?"
"Kagome," The stress from trying to speak just her name took alot of strength. What the hell had happened to her? "Where?" She wanted to know where she was, how she'd gotten back home. Had Sesshoumaru taken her through the well? If so where was her family, shouldn't they be here.
"You are safe, you're in Setahiro hospital. You have been asleep for a very long time young lady. Over two years to be exact, we weren't sure why. This is a hospital for patiences that are in a comatose state." The doctor explained while checking her vitals. "You seem to be in excellent health still. You just wouldn't wake up even after your wounds had healed. We couldn't find any brain damage either. Some of my associates stated it to be a case of shock that resulted in your current condition. I'm going to have a few tests ran and we'll see what comes back."
Kagome closed her eyes, she'd been asleep for over two years. Where was her family? Would they be informed of her waking? What would happen now that she had awoken? Wait two years here in her era, what did it mean for Inuyasha that was still in the fuedal era? She prayed that he'd broken through the spell that held him. So many questions entered her mind, she needed to know what happened.
A few nurses came in to take her for some tests. The whole time she worked on moving her muscles, praying that they would work. Much to her amazement, she was able to move without much effort. She protested when they kept trying to stick her with needles. The thought of being used as a pin cushion didn't sit well with her. The nurses finally left her alone after a severe cursing session from the now tired miko.
Kagome layed down on the bed, why hadn't her family shown up yet? Wouldn't they be worried about her? Indecision was her constant companion while she tried to rest. Tomorrow she would leave, go home to see what was keeping them.
Shiori answered the phone as her family sat down to dinner. Shuichi looked up from the his place to watch the conversation. "Hello." She spoke into the reciever, smiling at her son. He seemed so happy lately, for that she was glad. He took to helping his stepfather running the business, plus he was trying to be a good stepbrother. It was a nurse from the hospital, "Yes, this is she."
"Yes, we have a Jane Doe here. We have no information on her, just your name to contact if there was any new information on her status."
"Of course, sorry forgive my lapse of memory. It has been so long since the last call, almost two years actually. I was the one that found her, how is she?" Shiori was suprised to hear that the girl had woken up finally. "Really? That is wonderful, does she remember anything? That is so sad, has her family been located?"
"She gave us her name but no family has been located."
She listened to the options they would present the girl, once she fully recovered. She was suddenly very thankful that she had insisted on being put down as a contact. Seemed the girl didn't have any family to speak of. If she did, they couldn't be found. "No, I don't know her personally but I'll help if I can. Great, I'll come by in the morning." She hung up the phone and went back to the table.
"Who was it mother?" Kurama pulled the chair out for her. He tried to smile, hoping she would tell them. It looked like his stepfather and stepbrother knew what the call had been about. But she'd said something about almost two years ago. During that time he'd have been in the Makai, during the first tournament.
"Oh, a little over two years ago while you were away. I was on my way home, driving down a side street when a girl suddenly appeared out of nowhere. She was barely walking, stumbling all over the place. Naturally, I stopped to see if she was okay. The poor thing had been attacked, was injured real bad. Seemed whomever had done had raped the poor girl viciously as well. I checked up on her the first two weeks she was in the hospital. No family ever came forward to claim her, nor did they ever find out who she was. To make matters worse she was in a coma of some sort. I asked them to put my name down to be contacted if there was ever any change in her condition, in case no family was ever found. They just called to inform me that the girl had just woken up after all this time. No family can be located on her either. I want to go in the morning so the poor thing will have a friendly face."
"Are you sure that is wise?" Kurama didn't want his mother to get involved with someone no one knew. There was no telling who this girl really was or what she was. Two years ago the barrier had been gone, which meant the girl could be anyone. "If you really want to go, then I will take you."
"That would be great. I can only imagine how she must be feeling right now. She must be scared to death, waking up and being all alone in the world." Shiori began dinner, the topic quickly changed to business and school.
All the lights were off, the hallways were silent due to only one nurse being on duty. She was now sitting at the station watching a horror flick, unaware what was going on in one of the rooms. There was no reason for her to pay much mind to patients that did nothing but sleep. All being hooked up for any sign of change, she was free to do as she wished.
In the room all the way at the end of the hall, the girl inside was making plans. Kagome got up out of bed, stretching her sore muscles. She almost screamed when her body collapsed under her weight. It took several moments before it happened, a strange tingling sensation filled her body. The ache of her muscles started going away. It almost felt like every nerve and muscle in her small frame was readjusting itself.
There was no clothing for her to put on, not that she cared. Naked or dressed she was leaving this place tonight. She had to know what had become of her friends and her family. The doctor had informed her that there was no Higurashi family living in the Tokyo area. That couldn't be true, where else would they have gone? The shrine had been in their family for generations.
Besides the doctor had informed her that the local authorities would want to talk to her. Seemed her case was still open, they would investigate now that she was awake. What could she tell them? That she'd been in the fuedal era and her boyfriend had turned into a full youkai then attacked her? Somehow she had ended up back in her original era where she belonged. They would call in the paddy wagon, someone grab the jacket. She wouldn't be put away, she couldn't be here when they arrived in the morning.
The view out the window was haunting, the image grim to her. She had to be over ten stories up, there was only one way out for her. The front door seemed to be the only option but would they let her just walk on out? There was only one way to find out, she'd know in under a minute.
Kagome walked to the door slowly opening it, peering into the hall. She took a hesistant step out, looking down the hall. No one was spotted until she got near the nurse's station. Fear filled her at seeing the young woman flirting with a man in uniform. They turned when she was heard, Kagome took a step back. The man took a step forward, seeing the panic on her face.
"Calm down miss, maybe you should return to your room." He frowned when the girl shook her head no. The nurse had informed him that the girl had appeared to be hostile earlier. They had no idea who she was or what kind of condition she was in. They couldn't allow her to leave until a few things were cleared up. "I must insist that you return."
Kagome knew from the look on his face he wasn't going to allow her out the front door. His hand went to his radio, he was requesting for help. What did he just call her? She wasn't a possible threat, she just wanted to go home. There was a stand off for several minutes while she weighed her options. The elevator opened and another officer stepped out. The nurse hit a button on her desk, locking the elevator and the doors. There was no way out for her now, she felt her anger rise. She'd done nothing wrong, why would they try to keep her here?
The only other option was leaping out a window. They screamed at her as she turned on her heels, she ran as fast as she could. The doors flew past her vision as she picked up speed. The double windows were right in front of her, someone yelled for her to stop. She jumped at the last second throwing her arms up infront of her face. The glass burst as her body pushed through, then she was falling through the air. Panic filled her seeing the ground coming up fast. A barrier was erected to protect her body, the impact merely jarred her. Disbelief filled her when she landed effortlessly on her feet.
Wasting no time she started running, needing to put some distance between her and the hospital. The cold ground was harsh on the tender pads of her feet. Sirens were heard in the distance, she took another turn. She wouldn't be caught now, thirty minutes later she found a house that was up for sale. Appearing deserted she broke the window and slid inside the abandoned house.
There was no furniture inside but it would have to do for the night. Come daybreak she'd continue to the shrine, to see about her family. Exhaustion forced her to find a place on the floor where she could rest.
Shiori stepped out the elevator with Shuichi on her heels. No one stopped them as they walked up to the station. A few cops were standing around talking, which didn't seem right. It was a little after nine in the morning, visiting hours had just started. The nurse smiled at her weakly when she stopped, "Hello, someone called me yesterday. I'm here to see the girl that woke up yesterday."
"Oh, hang on, I'll be right back." She took off down the hall to speak to the cop that was standing near one of the doors. Then she walked back asking them to follow her.
Kurama looked around, why would there be security on a coma floor? Then he noticed the janitor cleaning up glass at the end of the hall. Had someone tried to break into the place? Impossible, not from this far up and there was no reason. Had something happened here last night?
"Good morning, I'm Detective Takagashi. I'd like to ask you a few questions if I can. How well did you know the girl in question?"
"What's going on? What's this all about? I didn't know her, I was the one that found her when she was injured. Has something happened?" Shiori felt her son place his hands on her shoulders trying to calm her.
"Nothing to worry about. Seems she got up in the middle of the night and made a run for it. The details are still sketchy, to say the least. We are trying to get all the details straight." He looked at the window behind him and shook his head. "The nurse and two officers on duty are all saying she managed to jump out that there window, highly doubtful since there wasn't a body at the bottom."
Kurama walked over to the broken glass ignoring the man's warning to stay away. The faint smell of blood lingering. The story must be true, seemed she'd gotten injured on her way out. Then where was the body? Only a youkai could have jumped that distance and still lived. He walked back to where his mother was standing giving her a quick squeeze on the shoulders, before entering the room. The girl's scent lingered in the air. She was definitely human, something else was there, her power. It wasn't strong enough for him to pin what type it was down. Whomever she had been she wasn't an average human.
Shiori turned to her son when he walked back out. "The poor girl must be out of her mind. Imagine waking up like that, no telling what happened to put her there to begin with. She was in such a bad state when I found her."
"They'll find her mother, I'm sure she will be fine." He left his mother to speak to the officer and walked up to nurse. His best smile was given which caused the woman to blush, "Can you tell me if the girl gave you a name?"
