|:| Chapter Two - Protective Custody |:|

Kaeda was lost in the facts, sitting behind her desk her eyes scanned over the piles of paper work. It was starting to make her eyes burn, so like always she removed her glasses and flopped her head down on her desk. Her once shiny brown lock, had grown duel and she could have sworn she saw gray strands in there this morning. If things weren’t crazy enough, Naraku had to go and get himself murdered. She was all ready up to her eyebrows in his case alone. They guy was involved in everything. You name it he did it! Well the only problem was they couldn’t prove it; he was cleaner than a new born baby. How a man guilty of prostitution, illegal gambling, murder, robbery, blackmail, and so much more get off with a clean slate?

“Captain, the gangs all here.” She looked up smiling at her young intern.

“Thank you Rin. I’ll be there shortly.”

“Ok.” She nodded her head before closing the door.

“Cute kid.” She smiled pulling her shoes back on, and grabbing her jean jacket on her way out the office.

She walked down the hallway, everyone giving off their normal morning greetings. She was up since eleven with very little sleep, working on the case. She’s made up her team and she’d leave the case up to them. With a quick knock on the open door they all looked up, some worse for wear, but god forbid she say anything about it. Taking her seat at the head of the table she got right down to business like always.

“Good morning boys and girls.”

“Morning Kaeda.” They all answered together like school kids.

“Ok, so as you have guessed. You’re my team for the murder case last night. Sango and Miroku, you’re partners. Kouga I’m going to team you up with Inuyasha this time.”

Kouga groaned with a deep scowl, “…bullshit.”

“You say something Kouga?” Inuyasha darn well heard him, he was just starting stuff.

“Nothing…partner.” The sarcasm oozed from his mouth like venom.

“Lastly, Ayame I’m going to partner you up with Sesshomaru.”

“That’s fine with me.” She looked to Sango both girls started to snicker.

“Something funny?” Kaeda lifted an eyebrow.

“Not at all Ma’am.” Sango pulled herself together quickly.

“Sesshomaru is the leader of the whole group, any of you hit a problem you go to him, Inuyasha is second in command should anything happen to Sesshomaru. Am I clear?”

“Yes.” Once again they answered as a unit.

“Ok now lets go over the basic. Miroku was on call so he should up first, then Sesshomaru was called in followed by Inuyasha. Miroku you showed up around what time last night?”

“It was 10:00pm.” He pushed up in his chair flipping though his pocket notebook.

“Very well, Sesshomaru you spoke with a…Hakudoushi Sato?”

“Yes, he was an employ of Naraku’s. He was coming by to pick him up, said they had earns to run. He waited for him outside for forty minutes, before using a spare key to enter the house. That’s when he found the victim’s body on the floor.”

“I see, Kouga what did you and you boys find out on the scene?” Kaede glanced down to the right of the table.

Kouga growled, “Not a damn thing…no scent trail. No footprints, no fingerprints. They knew what they were doing. They went straight for him, not making any side trips, house was clean. Not even a forced entry.”

“That’s means an inside job.” Inuyasha frowned, tons of people worked for Naraku, but not everyone had a key to his house.

“What about the sister…Kagura Nitta?” Sango questioned.

“Alibi, was out from 8:30pm until 10:30 when she showed up on the scene with the victim’s girlfriend.”

Inuyasha shifted in his seat a bit, “ Girlfriend?”

“Yes, Miss Sakura Yomiuri. Funny thing is, we don’t have a damn thing on her. I ran tons of background checks, and its like she doesn’t even exist! Not a place of residence, no listed family members, no school records. They nearly didn’t take her at the hospital because of it.” Kaeda was still frustrated with the whole thing.

“ Question…” Everyone turned to Sango.

“Does anyone know, if the rumors are true? Did Naraku really have the Shikon no tama in his position?”

“No way, that’s well guard in the heart of Japan. No one can get passed those mikos!” Miroku stated.

“Naraku did.” Everyone gasped looking at Kaeda with shocked faces.

“I called and as of three weeks ago, the jewel has been missing. After speaking with Naraku’s sister Kagura, she did in fact confirm that her brother had the jewel. She listed a number of reasons as to why people would want him dead, too many to count as far as I was concern. Yet she feels this is the most logical reason for his death.”

“So…where is it?”

“Good question Ayame, but I don’t have an answer. Instead I have more problems.”

“Problems?” Kouga repeated.

“Kagura stressed the importance of protecting Miss Yomiuri. Kagura informed me, that Naraku trusted no one, but her. So if anyone would know where the jewel is hidden, she would.”

“So let’s ask her, the sooner we have it…”

“I can’t.” Kaeda looked deeply concerned.

“Wha…what’s wrong Kaeda.”

“She’s not in the best of shape right now, the poor woman can’t keep anything down. I called the hospital, they reused to let me speak with her. She won’t eat anything, won’t say anything to anyone. She just stares out the window of her room. She’s in danger of being killed over the jewel. In her condition we can’t risk that, losing her would mean losing the jewel as well.”

Kouga shrugged, “Easy fix, protective custody.”

“I can’t say I didn’t think of the idea already, still Kouga I’d like for you to handle the details for me.”

“Sure thing.”

“Well, that’s all I have for now. Sesshomaru I’d like to speak with you in private, the rest of you are dismissed.”

They all stood, excusing Sesshomaru as the rest filed out, Inuyasha stuck his tongue out at Sesshomaru who frown giving him the finger with a dark smirk. The door was closed and Sesshomaru turned to the woman at the end of the table.

“I understand Inuyasha saw the other side of things last night.”

He looked down, not sure how to answer “He’s not use to it. He’s either chasing them down, beating them up, or finding them dead. He’s never seen just how it affects the people around them. It really shook him up I can tell. He seems fine now, but he’s still thinking about it.”

“Look if he expects to take over as Captain, then he needs to be able to handle all types of the job. Not just the ‘fun stuff’ as he would call it.”

“You mean…”

“I still think you’re the best guy for the job, seeing as you’ve been with me the longest. Yet you have made your point clear you’re not interested. So that leave Inuyasha. If he can solve this case, then I think he’s ready to take my job. This is the first murder case I’ve ever put him on. I know you care about your little brother, so help him.”

“I will, I always do.” Sesshomaru stood picking up his folder.

“I’m going to leave the protection of Miss. Yomiuri in his hands.”

“What?” Sesshomaru spun around.

“He may not like it, but it’s something he’s never had to deal with before. I think it would be good for him.”

“He’s not going to agree with being some damn babysitter.”

“Then you take the job, and Kouga can become Captain, he’s next in line. Then Sango, Ayame and Miroku are good but this isn’t the right job for them. They need more time.”

“So if Inuyasha says no…I have to watch Naraku’s wench, and Kouga becomes captain. How is that fair?” He growled.

She pushed her glasses up on her face and smiled, “Dear Sesshomaru, whatever gave you the idea this world was a fair one? You want fair, quite the police force and start up baseball.” Her smile grew as she stood leaving him alone in the room.

“He’s not going to like this shit…not at all.”

She looped her arms around his neck, kissing him softly. He didn’t hold back pressing her against the back of his desk, more than happy he was given an office. His claws raked along the naked flesh of her thighs making her shudder against is hard body. The knock on the door made them part and she smiled shyly. Sitting on the edge of the desk, as he fixed his pants trying to hide the slight bulge.

“Come in.” Sesshomaru opened the door, welcomed by the light scent of arousal.

He lifted an eyebrow at his brother, “Your just nasty…you know that?”

With a clever smirk he nodded, “Yeah… I know.”

“Hello Kagome.” She blushed looking at the floor.

“Hey Sesshomaru, long time no see…guess you’ve been busy.” She smiled softly.

“You could say that, Inu I need to talk to you.”

“Oh, yeah sure…babe, we still on for lunch?” She nodded quickly with a smile.

“Cool.” She got down of his desk, with a quick kiss she made her way towards the door.

“See you later Inuyasha, bye Sesshomaru.” She looked at him flashing a quick smile.

They waited until she closed the door, then they sat at Inuyasha’s desk.

“She was worried when I left last night…so what’s up?”

“You know I’m in charge right?” He poked at the pencil cup on Inuyasha’s desk.

“Not happy about it, but yeah…I know. Did you come to brag?” Inuyasha growled snatching the cup away.

“No…just wanted to tell you, your assignment.”

“Assignment?” He looked confused.

“Would you say the safety of Miss Yomiuri is of great importance?” He’d work this carefully.

“I guess, still if she wanted to fuck a dead beat, she should suffer with the cost.” He scowl looking out the window to see Kagome walk to her car.

“I see…still she knows where the jewel is hidden.”

“So we think… she might not know shit. What are you getting at?”

“I’ve decided…to trust you with her protection.”

“Say what?” Inuyasha turned sharply.

“Kaeda, made it clear of how important she is. If that jewel got into the wrong hands, we’d all be screwed. If have to protect her until we find out who the hell killed Naraku.”

“Bullshit, I’m twenty five, not fucking fifteen I ain’t babysitting Naraku’s whore!” He slammed his fist on the desk.

“I can’t say I didn’t try…Kouga will do it.”

“Damn right he will! I didn’t bust my ass to become some nanny!”

“Your right…still moving up from nanny to captain is something Kouga won’t mind.”

“Come again?” Inuyasha paled slightly looking wide eyed.

“Did you say…captain…you mean my captain job?” Inuyasha stammed.

“Kaeda made that clear as well, if you decide not to take on the task of becoming Miss. Yomiuri’s, personal bodyguard I guess you could say, then I have to do it, and Kouga will be given the promotion when the case is solved.”

“Sessy…come on, don’t mess with me…can…would...she can’t pull this shit on me!”

“She can, and she did. So you’d better pick.”

“This isn’t fair!” He shouted.

“Then go play baseball…” He smirked at the cruel irony.

Sesshomaru waited a good ten minutes but Inuyasha just stood facing the window. His head was down, and his hands rest at his side. The sun was high in the sky shining though the glass windows over looking the busy streets below. He had to be hot standing there in that black leather jacket. Still that was his thing, his black leather jacket, and bad boy sunglasses. Not forgetting the sliver dog tag that hung down to his mid-chest. Sesshomaru looked down at his own dog tag, thinking of his father. He’d been in the military and fought to the very end. This was all the two of them really had left. Sure they had money left to them, and half a company they knew nothing about.

Each of them had one of their father’s tags, then one of their own. Name, blood type, and race were printed on them. He’d had enough, standing he made it to the door before Inuyasha finally answered.

“I will be captain…you know that right?”

“Yeah…I know.”

“Can I stay home…or…”

“No, for her safety and your own you’ll be relocated. Only members on the team will know where you’ll be.”

“Fine. I ain’t happy about this…but I can’t let the wolf take my job. I’ve worked too hard.”

“Glad to hear you’ll do it. I’ll go inform the others. See you around.”

“Whatever.”

Rin leaned back in the desk chair her eyes closed, a huge pink bubble coming from her mouth. Her dirty black and yellow chuck’s rested on the desk tapping to the beat of Green Day’s American Idiot. Her camouflage overalls were unfastened at the top, and to keep them from fall she used a belt that looked like a seatbelt buckle. Her black sports bra could be seen clearly thought the bright yellow fishnet shirt she wore over it. This was the first thing Kohaku saw coming onto the fifth floor of the police building. He cleared his thought but she didn’t move or even make any signs of noticing him. Taking a different stand on the matter he tapped her foot. Rin jumped up startled to meet the love of her life…he just didn’t know it yet.

Pulling the headphones from her ears she blushed, “Ca…Can I help you?”

“I need to speak with Kaede Shinko; she is the captain of police is she not?”

“She kind of old for you…” Rin frowned.

“It’s about Miss Yomiuri.” He tried not to sigh.

“Oh! Oh course…sorry. I’ll call her up right now.”

“Thank you.” He took a seat across from her desk, giving Rin a perfect view of him.

He was good enough to eat on all levels that mattered. His deep chocolate eyes studied the floor, as his dark brown hair fell from the sides framing his angelic face. He had the most adorable freckles on his face over his nose and cheeks. Looking all professional in that black and gray suit. He looked, all grown up. That was good; though Rin was turning seventeen soon she thought older men were much better than younger boys. He sat straight up, quite as a mouse. Until he lifted his eyes to her, they meet and Rin could feel the blush creping across her cheeks. To advert his gaze she went to the phone calling Kaede’s office.

“Yes, there’s a gentlemen here to speak with you on behave of Miss Yomiuri.”

“Ummm ok, excuse me; may I have your name?”

“Yes, my name is Kohaku.”

“Ok, he’s names Kohaku.”

“Yes, ma’am.” She hung up the phone and stood from behind her desk.

“Would you please follow me?” He stood and Rin tried not to smile.

He was tall; thank god she loved tall guys! They walked down the hall lined with gray walls, and office doors, some open others closed. They reached the office at the end of the hall; Rin gave a quick knock before entering the room.

Kaede looked up from her paper work, “Kohaku?”

“Yes.”

“Please have a seat.” Rin watched him in a dream state.

“Thank you Rin, that’ll be all.” That was her hint to leave.

Rin didn’t get it. He turned looking at her confused and she laughed nervously.

“Rin! Don’t you have some filing to do or something?”

“Oh…ummm yeah…just call if you need me…anything ok. Just call…I’m right outside.”

“I know where you are Rin, thank you.” Kaede sighed, but the whole thing had caused Kohaku to smile.

“Nice…meeting you Kohaku…” She blushed.

“You too Rin.” She looked shocked that he knew her name, not thinking about the number of times Kaede had called it.

When the door finally closed shut, Kaeda exhaled looking at Kohaku.

“Now…just who are you and what do you want here?”

“My name is Kohaku Mitsui, I’m one of Naraku’s spokes men, I deal with smaller things in the job.”

“An earn boy.” Kaeda stated harshly.

“Yes.” Though the name didn’t seem to bother Kohaku at all, like he was use to it.

“Your last name…Mitsui, would you happen to know a Sango Mitsui.”

“She’s my older sister. Though I’d like for her not to know I was here, nor speak of her.”

“Fair enough, so what do you want?”

“Ms. Nitta told me she informed you that Miss. Yomiuri’s life may be in danger.”

“Yes, we’re taking steps to see that’s she safe.”

“That’s why I’m here. That’s not needed. Due to resent news, Miss. Yomiuri has been named the new Lord, or in this case Lady of the eastside. So with that said, she will be taken care of by our own men. There is no need for you to interfere.”

“Interfere…look little boy. She may be the new drug princess, but that doesn’t mean she’s safe. If anything that put her in more danger. We know this was an inside job. Meaning ‘your own men’ killed your former drug lord. So until we solve this case, she’ll remain in police custody. Am I clear?”

“Very clear, though you’ll have to deal with more than you bargained for.” He sighed stand up.

“Well just have to see then won’t we?” She watched the young man leave her office, still not feeling well about how the whole thing went.
