Chapter Sixteen
"Do you think she will ever come back?" Shippo sat on the edge of the well peering down into the darkness. Kirara meowed softly beside him.
Miroku leaned against the edge, tilting his head back. He had feared the worst at finding the village under attack. He came in time to see the men leaving, a broken village in their wake. A few people had informed him that they had gone after Sango as she ran from the village. To this day he didn't understand why they had attacked her or the village. It didn't matter, she was gone. But at least he could live with the hope that she was alive and well. Kirara had tracked her scent to the well and down. No body had been found to indicate her death. He'd tried to go through the well, hoping it would work.
He was still here, alone. Maybe it was what he deserved, to spend the rest of his life alone. Was she with Kagome? Deep down he wished it so. She would finally be able to find peace in a new world, a new home. As long as she let herself move on. If there was some way for him to reach her, he would.
Kagome decided to go take a walk and check how things were outside. Sango was still sleeping in Kurama's room. After two days of touch and go, she was starting to improve. Kagome had stayed with her as well as the fox. Now the miko needed some fresh air and to get out of this place.
She got dressed and slipped on her shoes. After informing Shiori of her decision she walked outside into the evening sun. People were going about their lives as if the event had never taken place. One wouldn't think they'd just been attacked by some unknown force. She guessed most humans denied the exsistence of anything besides themselves. Prefering to live in a state of ignorance.
Maybe now was a good time to give in to the craving she had. She took a step forward and was blocked by someone no taller than herself. "What do you want Hiei?"
"Where are you going?"
"If you really must know, a walk. Then I might stop at the shop down the street and get a shake." She looked at the short man, he had a bored expression on his face. "You can either walk with me or move out my way."
"Hn." He fell instep beside her.
She felt like shoving him in front of a car as he walked beside her. His attitude clearly stated he was ignoring her. Talk about antisocial. She also began to notice that everyone was giving them a wide berth as they walked. She glanced down at his face, no wonder. He was glaring at everyone, "Will you stop that, last time I walk anywhere here with you."
"I am here as protection not company."
"I don't need you to protect me, so you can leave if that's the case." She stormed off trying to put some distance between them. She continued to walk knowing he was still trailing behind her. It was more than obvious as people cleared a path before she got to them.
Once at the shop, she walked inside. He seemed satisfied to lean against the wall outside, she could see his shoulder through the glass. What a jerk, how was she suppose to enjoy a nice walk with him trailing behind her. A huge grin covered her place, she walked up to the counter cutting in front of the other people. "Excuse me, its an emergency." The boy behind the counter smiled at her. "Hi, can you do me a favor. There's a guy out there following me. Does this place have a back door I could use?"
"Want me to call the authorities?"
"Oh no, it's just an old boyfriend thats bugging me. I'm not in any danger, he's just really annoying."
"Sure, I'll show it to you. Be right back." He opened the latch and lead her through the kitchen. She thanked him when she found herself on the next street over. Now time to make sure he couldn't track her.
Hiei waited patiently as he watched people go in and then come back out again. What the hell was taking her so long? He walked inside the building and scanned the area. He swore loudly causing everyone inside to look at him. The bitch had ditched him, he was going to throttle her.
Kagome was actually down the street a good ways. Deciding she was getting hungry, she stopped at a burger place. Something quick and easy before she went back. Shiori's cooking was wonderful but every once and in awhile it was nice to eat something greasy and bad for the health.
She got in line and waited her turn, she wanted a burger with extra cheese. Couldn't forget the fries. As soon as she got her order the door opened and a group of people walked in. She didn't move fast enough before she was spotted.
"Ah, Higurashi." The boy waved, she waved back no wanting to be rude.
She took a seat, he was with friends so maybe he'd ignore her. She was working on her fries when he sat down in front of her with his food. "Hi, Hojo."
"Good to see you out, you don't mind do you?"
"No but what about your friends?" 'Please go back over to them.'
"They'll be fine without me for awhile. Besides I can't let you eat alone. So what have you been up to?"
"Not much," She kept her eyes on her food. So much for enjoying a peaceful meal by herself. Maybe she should have kept Hiei with her.
"You look a lot better. How are you feeling these days?" Hojo began to eat his own food.
"Great." 'Doh, bad move Kagome.' She felt like kicking herself, she knew what was coming.
"Excellent, could I interest you in a movie tomorrow night?"
She knew she couldn't go even if she wanted to. She most definitely didn't want to, she'd rather put up with Hiei's solemn attitude. "Can't do it tomorrow sorry. I'm kind of staying with a friend who was recently hurt in an accident."
"I'm sorry to hear that. I insist that you let me walk you home, it's getting dark." He stood up and threw their trash away.
"I'll be fine by myself." Maybe he wouldn't take it too bad if she took off running.
"Nonsense, I insist." He grabbed her elbow gently. She let herself be dragged away.
Kagome acted like she was paying attention as he chattered away about how his first year of college was going. Like she really cared. He let her lead the way as they walked. The only good thing about the walk back was people weren't spreading before her like she was Moses.
She stopped in front of the door, "This is it. Thanks for walking me home." She tried the door knob, great it was locked. True it was after dark but did they need to lock her out. She knocked gently on the door, 'Hurry!'
"It was my pleasure, call me if you decide to take me up on that movie."
Kagome turned around to say goodbye, her eyes widened when he grabbed her shoulders. 'Oh no.' He brought his mouth down on hers before she could protest. She heard the door open behind her, great. She pushed him away gently, "Goodnight Hojo." She watched him walk away, a sigh escaped her. She turned and came face to face with a very pissed off Hiei.
"Hi." She smiled at him, a blush crept across her face. He continued to glare at her, so she pushed past him. Her feet carried her to the bedroom.
Once inside the bathroom she proceeded to brush her teeth and scrub her mouth with a rag. What had he been thinking? To make matters worse it had been Hiei to answer the door. Then again he was probably the one who locked it, knowing she'd have to knock to get back in. It was his fault, if the door had been open she could have made it inside before Hojo made a move on her. Now she would have nightmares for months to come.
She heard the door to the bedroom open. She cleaned out the sink and stepped out. "What do you want?"
"I don't take kindly to you running off." He stood in the middle of the room looking at her.
"Well I don't need a lap dog following me around either." She crossed her arms and glared back.
"Hn." He took a couple steps forward trying to intimidate her, he growled when he saw it wasn't working. "So which do you prefer? Male or Female?"
She was torn between shock, embarressment and humor. "Maybe I prefer both."
"You lie. I have yet to see you with your woman but I know what I saw outside. Is it all men that leave you cold or just him?"
"That's none of your damn business. I refuse to answer that." She couldn't believe he was asking her about her sexual preference.
What did it matter?
"Fine, I'll find out for myself." He appeared before her before she could blink. He grabbed the back of her head bringing her mouth down to meet his.
Her eyes widened in shock then closed as he let up on the pressure. His lips became soft turning into a light caress. She felt herself return the motion suprising both of them. His tongue came out to lick her bottom lip, her mouth opened and he dipped inside. Her nerves came alive as he explored her. The tiny muscle came in contact with her own, hers sprang to life meeting his. Her hands landed on his waist as he kept a tight hold on her neck. His tongue continued to clash with hers causing a strange heat to spark in her lower abdomen. In the back of her mind she was sure she heard him growl before he used his other hand to grasp her waist, pulling her closer against his body.
"Oh my." They pulled apart to see Shiori standing in the doorway with a shocked look on her face.
