CHAPTER 16
Kagome stepped onto the edge of the dry well. She extended her hand to Kouga, “Let’s go! I can’t wait for my family to meet you!” Her smile, as always, was contagious.
Kouga smiled at the delicate beauty standing on the well. Sunlight danced in her hair, showing almost blueish highlights from her deep onyx colored tresses. He took her hand and stepped beside her, “Do you just jump in or do you have to do anything special?” Kouga asked.
“Nope.” Kagome shook her head, “Follow me.” She stepped off the rim, falling rapidly into the darkness.
“Kagome!” Kouga leapt in after her, worried for her safety.
At first, everything was dark, the falling sensation made Kouga dizzy. Before he had a chance to call to a Kagome again, a brilliant blue light rippled around them like frothy waves in the ocean. Tiny pinpoints of light resembling starts in the night sky appeared to streak past them as they plunged througe ble blue void.
His mate was ahead of him, not out of reach in case she needed rescuing. Their falling forms slowed as the lights faded in the dark. Kouga watched as Kagome placed her feet gently on the ground. He landed beside her, not saying a word as his gaze starred up at the ceiling covering the well.
“Hey.” Kagome’s finger poked his ribs as she watched the play of emotions across his face. “Did you hear what I said?”
“Huh?” Kouga’s mind was a flurry of confusion and fear as he tried to focus on his mate’s pleasing scent.
“I said pick me up and jump out of the well. There’s a floor on the other side of the well for you to land on.” Kagome wrapped her arms around Kouga’s neck as he bent down, flexing his legs for the leap. The wolf prince held her close, tucking her close against his chest to assure her safety and avoid injury in case he grazed the siof tof the wooden structure.
Kouga looked around at the walls of the well house, noting its sturdiness and similarity to the homes built in his own time. Unnoticed to him, Kagome had slipped from his arms and was heading up the stairs, “Come on Kouga!”
He nodded, hesitantly placing one foot in front of the other as he followed his love to the door. Out that door was her world, her family, her time. Never had Kouga felt so distant from his mate, even when she traveled with the mutt and he had no idea where she was, he still felt like there was an unbreakable connection between them. Among both youkai and humans in the feudal age, he reigned supreme. His tribe was strong, intelligent, knowledgeable of the land and how to survive. They were a balance of fierce warriors that would fight to the death to defend their pack, yet love their families with the same warmth and tenderness of human families. Here, in the future, he was nothing. He had nothing to show his mate’s family so he could win their approval. All he had to give them was his assurance that Kagome would be loved. ‘Is that enough?’ Kouga wondered.
The very breath in Kouga’s lungs seemed to rush out in one mighty whoosh as the sounds and smells invaded his senses. Sunlight and cool air rushed around his frozen form. The first thing he saw was the god tree standing proud, announcing it had with stood the test of time. A stone patio surrounded the well house and led to other structures on the property. Kagome tugged his hand as she led him to a large home. Kouga looked up, taking notice of how big Kagome’s house was compared to his cave. His heart sank. ‘Just wait until her family hears that she’s living in a cave! They’ll hate me for sure.’
Kagome slid open the door that led to the kitchen and kicked off her shoes. “Mom! I’m home!” she called out. She gripped Kouga’s hand, pulling him in next to her. "Where's grandpa?"
“Kagome!” An older woman with dark hair came from another room and quickly embraced the young miko. “Your grandfather went out of town with a few of his friends. I was worried about you! I’m so glad you’re home!”
Kouga watched as his mate pulled away from her mother, “Geez mom, I wasn’t gone that long! Anyway, this Kouga. He’s my...friend.” Kagome winced at the look he gave her.
“Hi Kouga!” Mrs. H. greeted, “I’m glad you came to visit us. I like knowing who my daughter is traveling with in ancient Japan. Are you a hanyou like Inuyasha?”
Was Kouga surpised that she asked this? Yes and no. He knew Inuyahsa met her family before and he always wondered where Kagome got her curious streak. Apparently, she inherited that from her mother. One thing for sure, Kagome and her mother weren’t shy about getting to the point in a conversation. “No, I’m a full blooded wolf youkai.” Kouga replied with pride.
“Are you stronger than Inuyasha?” she asked.
“Of course I am. That mutt can’t hold a candle to me in a real fight.” An arrogant grin curled the edges of his mouth.
Mrs. Higurashi gave Kagome a knowing smile, “Well, Kouga,” Mrs. H. took his arm as she led him to the living room, “I am certainly glad to know that a big strong youkai such as yourself is making sure my little girl is safe.”
Kagome glared at her mom when she glanced over her shoulder giving her daughter a wink. ‘Shit!’ Kagome swore mentally, ‘She is embarrassing the hell out of me! What’s with this little girl crap!? I can take care of myself!’ Kagome thought for a moment about all the times Inuyahsa and Kouga had saved her, ‘Ok, so most of the time I can take care of myself! We definitely need to have a mother, daughter talk later on.’
“Would you two like something to drink?” Mrs. H. beamed as she saw Kaogme sit down close to Kouga on the couch.
“That’s alright mom, I can get it.” Kagome went in the kitchen and filled the tea kettle with water.
Kouga sat across from Kagome’s mom for a moment, wondering what he should say. After a few minutes of tense silence Kouga stood up, “I.... I think Kagome needs my help.”
“Sure.” Mrs. H. replied as she watched him leave. She clamped her hands over her mouth to stifle her laughter. It was obvious from the moment Kagome walked in the door that Kouga was special. Inuyasha was a friend, Kouga was so much more. ‘Maybe a lover?’ Mrs. H thought. It didn’t matter to her as long as Kagome loved him and he treated her well.
Kouga rounded the corner and entered kitckitchen. Kagome was gathering cups and tea bags when he approached her, “Friends?!” he hissed out. “How could you say that? We are MATES, that goes WAY beyond friendship!” his voice was getting louder as he growled down at her.
“Will you please calm yourself!” Kagome said as she covered his mouth.
“No! Dammit, I came here to tell your family of my intentions, not hide the truth.”
“I’m not hiding anything...”
“I can’t believe you said that. You should have introduced me as your mate or...or, well, I’m not sure what else, but instead you lied to your mother!”
Kagome sighed feeling frustrated and afraid, “Put yourself in my shoes for minute Kouga. I come home after being gone longer than usual. I’ve never had a boyfriend or really showed interest in anyone other than Inuyasha. Suddenly, I bring home a guy that my mom doesn’t know anything about. What am I supposed to say? ‘Hi mom this is the youkai wolf prince that I love and I am now his life mate!’ I need time to talk to her, to make her understand what I feel. She needs to see how close we are.”
Kouga suspiciously eyed her for a moment. After thinking over what she said, he had to admit is was logical and would give her mother a chance to get to know him. “Fine. I see your point, but I won’t hide my feelings for you and pretend that we are just friends. I love you Kaogme. You belong to me and I want the world to know it.” Kouga’s lips met hers in a rough, possessive kiss. He slowly ravaged her mouth, passing his tongue over hers. He backed her against the counter so their bodies were tightly pressed together. Wandering hands caressed her hips as he tilted her head farther back, exposing her throat to a wet trail of kisses.
Kagome was lost in the feel of her lover’s touch, that is, until the door banged shut! Kouga and Kagome jumped at the loud noise, startled out of their passion by the young boy eyeing them curiously.
“Souta?” Kagome reached out for him as she noticed the bruise on his face. “What happened to your cheek?”
“Nothing.” Souta mumbled as he shoved her hand away. “Who’s that?” he asked.
“This is Kouga. Kouga this is my baby brother Souta.” Kagome ruffled Souta’s hair.
“I’m not a baby!” Souta yelled as he ran up the stairs to his room.
Kouga watched Souta. His demon senses detected the faint trace of tears on the boy. He decided to not say anything, he’d just wait till later to talk to his new brother.
Mrs. Higurashi came into the kitchen, “He mus in in a bad mood.”
“Do you want me to talk to him?” Kagome asked.
“I’ll talk to him later.” Both women gave him a questioning look. ‘Females.’ Kouga shook his head at them, “Sometimes there are things males need to discuss with other males. From the look of that bruise, I’d say Souta has been on the losing end of a fight.”
“But, I’m his mom. Souta knows he can talk to me about anything.” Mrs. Higurashi accepted the warm cup of tea form Kagome.
“It’s a matter of pride. No male wants to admit he lost a fight.” Kouga took a sip of his sweetened tea before continuing, “Besides, maybe I can teach him some self defense.” Kouga grinned.
Mrs. H. wasn’t sure why, but she trusted this stranger. His movements were natural and at ease. He didn’t appear to be sneaky or have any hidden agendas.
“Don’t teach him anything too dangerous.” Mrs. H. stated
Kouga smiled at her reassuringly, “I won’t. He just needs to know the basics for now.”
With that matter cleared up, Mrs. Higurashi and Kagome started dinner.
Kagome took his hand, leading him out the back door to the patio, “If you want to see some of the city, you can sit on the roof. We have a great view, but DO NOT leave the shrine grounds!” Kagome made sure to emphasize his need to stay away from the rest of modern society. She explained that demons were unheard of in thay. ay.
Kouga reluctantly agreed, folding his arms over his chest and poking his lower lip out much like a child would, “Fine.” he mumbled. Once again, his mate laid down the law and from the look in her eyes when she gave him instructions to stay put, there would be hell to pay if he disobeyed.
He watched as she returned to her home. The way her hips swayed when she walked made him want to grab her and take her some place private. Kouga wanted his mate, his body demanded her attention before this day was through. His eyes took on a devious twinkle as he started to formulate plans of how to bed his mate tonight. ‘Not now dammit!’ he growled to himself. It was time to use the self control he obtained from being the leader of a wolf pack.
Kouga adjusted the constricting fur wrap around his waist and leapt onto the roof. The sun was starting to go down, casting murky purples and reds across the sky. He could hear the laughter and chatter of humans as twalkwalked down the side walk near the shrine entrance. Loud sounds that he could not identify seemed to come from every direction. A sound that resembled an object beating against the wind hovered overhead. ‘What the hell?’ Kouga thought as he looked up, only to see a weird type of bird whose wings moved in a circular pattern.
Another sound from his right interrupted his train of thought, “What are you doin’ up here on the roof?”
It was the boy, Souta. “Just lookin’ around.” Kouga shrugged. “Kagome told me not to leave the grounds.”
“That’s a wise idea.” responded Souta, “My sister can act pretty dumb at times, but every now and then she comes up with a smart thought.”
“Don’t talk about Kaogme like that, kid.”
“Who’s gonna stop me?” Souta grinned at him, challenging Kouga’s authority.
The wolf prince laughed, “You sure do try to talk tough for a kid who got his ass whooped earlier.”
“Take that back! You don’t know me and you have no idea why I was fighting!”
“Then why don’t you tell me?” Kouga looked at his shocked expression, patiently waiting for Souta to explain.
Souta was disgusted with himself. Here he was telling a complete stranger about his problems. “I love my sister...” was all he said, before pausing and starring out the evening sky.
“Ok..... and what does that have to do with your fight?”
“The fight was over Kagome.” Souta turned his eyes bao Koo Kouga, “Some boys at school said that Kagome was ditching school because they saw her standing on a street corner.”
“What’s ‘ditching’? Kouga asked
“It’s when you don’t go to school either because you don’t want to or your parents let you take the day off.”
Souta waited for a reaction from Kouga, but when the wolf prince just gave him a blank look, Souta found himself more frustrated than ever. “Well!?” Souta shouted.
“Well...what?” Kouga asked.
“Doesn’t that make you mad!!??”
Kouga was incredibly confused, “Why would I care where Kagome stands or if she doesn’t go to school? As long as she doesn’t get hurt, she as the right do whatever she wants.”
Souta smacked his forehead with the palm of his hand, “I forgot you live in the feudal age, so let me explain: Girls who stand on et cet corners for no good reasons are called ‘prostitutes’. That means they sell their bodies to men.” Souta spoke slowly, letting Kouga’s mind fully latch on the unspoken details of what happens during one of those ‘sales’.
It took a moment, but the little ‘On’ switch in Kouga’s brain finally flipped in the right direction, “WHAT!!!!!!???????” He shouted at the top of his lungs.
‘Now he understands..’ Souta thought.
Springing to his feet, Kouga flexed his hands, allowing his wolfen claws to extend, “I’LL KILL THOSE LITTLE BASTARDS!! HOW DARE THEY ASSUME THAT MY MATE IS SOME LOWLY WHORE!!!”
‘Oh yeah, Kouga is gonna kick some butt today..hey...hold on..’ Souta snapped out of his thoughts when the word ‘mate’ was mentioned. “Mate?”
Kouga’s rampage stopped in mid stream of several colorful curses, “Huh?”
“Don’t play dumb. You said ‘mate’. Does that mean that you and my sister are going out or something?”
‘What is it with this family?’ Kouga pondered. ‘They never miss a thing and show no hesita whe when they want to ask a question.’ “We are not courting, if that’s what you mean by ‘going out’.”
“You’re not? Then why were you two kis...”
Before Souta could ask anything else, Kouga added, “We are married in human terms, so I have every right to kiss my mate.”
“Cool!” Souta gave him a face splitting smile, “So are like Inuyasha? You don’t look like him at all.”
Kouga sighed, annoyed at the being asked the same question again, “I’m not a dog HANYOU, I’m a wolf YOUKAI. There’s no human blood in me. I’m a hell of a stronger than that half breed dog turd.”
Souta thought this over for a moment, “So, you are 100% demon. Do you and my sister plan on having kids?”
Kouga didn’t like the crafty look on this kid’s face, “Of course we do.”
“Well, then won’t your kids be weak half breeds too?” Souta looked smugly satisfied with his observation.
Kouga snatched him by the neck of his shirt, lifting him out the window and holding Souta so they we’re nearly nosenosenose, “How old are you?”
“Ten. Why?”
Kouga shook his head, “What’s with you smart ass pups? Do you know Shippo?”
“Nope. Kagome never brought him with her, but I have heard stories about the fox. Why do you ask?”
“I think it would be a good idea to keep you two separated, forever. You’re both too damn smart for your age.”
Souta smirked at the wolf prince, “I call ‘em like I see ‘em.”
“Whatever kid. Look, you can’t mention anything about what I said, got it?! Kagome and I want to talk to your mother t. t. So don’t go blabbin’ about us being mates.”
Kouga sat Souta on the roof, giving him the most intimidating look he could muster. “What do I get if I agree to keep quiet?” The look obviously didn’t work.
“Shit! You are just like Shippo!! You are both little con-artists, ya know that!?”
Souta grinned, shrugging his shoulders, “Nothing in life is free.”
Kouga sighed, “Alright, how about I teach you to fight? I promised your mom I wouldn’t show you anything too dangerous, but I can still teach you to kick ass!”
“Really!?”
“Sure. From what Kagome told me, your father died a long time ago. You need some male guidance and I’d be happy to provide that.”
Souta grabbed hold of Kouga’s extended hand. Small arms circled his waist as the little boy hugged him. A sudden realization of his actions made Souta pull away quickly with a slight blush staining his cheeks, “Uh... sorry.”
“Don’t apologize.” Kouga patted his shoulder. He could tell Kagome’s brother felt embarrassed about hugging him, so he changed the subject, “When do you want your first lesson?”
“Can we start now, before dinner?” the boys eyes were bright with hope.
“That’s fine, but let’s get off this roof first. I don’t think my new mother-in-law or mate would be happy if I let you fall and break your neck.” Kouga wrapped a strong arm around Souta’s waist and jumped off the roof, landing firmly on the stone covered ground.
Kagome and her mom watched form the kitchen window as Kouga showed Souta various stances and ways to throw and block punches. The wolf prince also demonstrated different kicks. They laughed when Souta tried mimicking him, easily losing balance and falling on his rear end.
“He has a lot of patience Kagome.” Mrs. H. said as she watched them.
“Kouga’s good with kids. He treats Shippo better than Inuyasha did.”
Not missing the opportunity to be nosy, Mrs. H. decided to inquire about the hanyou. “Speaking of Inuyahsa, I haven’t seen him around lately. Is everything ok?”
Kagome’s face fell. She knew it was impossible to hide the truth from her mom, but she wasn’t sure how to explain all that had happened between her, Inuyasha and Kouga. “It’s a long story.”
“The food won’t be done for another half an hour.” Mrs. Higurashi added.
“Not now mom, please.” Kagome’s tone was soft, almost pleading for her mom to not puhe ihe issue any farther.
“Alright. But when you are ready to talk, I’ll be here to listen.”
“Thanks.” Kagome hugged her mom, thankful that she didn't push her for an answer.
