CHAPTER 15
Nearby, two sets of eyes watched Kouga and Miroku through thick foliage. Her simple human ears could not hear their words, but the sensitive ears of the hanyou missed nothing.
Apparently, Kagome planned on going home today. Kouga was going to take her back to her family. ‘No doubt that damned wolf will announce that he is now her mate.’ Inuyasha scoffed at the thought of the wolf being welcomed with open arms into his former shard detector’s loving family. A sour look twisted his features. No matter how Inuyasha felt toward Kagome, the thought of Kouga going to her time and taking his place just pissed him off!
Kikyo watched his face as a low growl rumbled deep within his chest, “What is wrong with you? You seem..... angry all of a sudden.”
“I’m not angry!” Inuyasha snapped
“Of course you aren’t. I can tell by your tone that you feel nothing but joy in your heart.” She smiled at the hanyou as he narrowed his eyes at her.
“Don’t be a smart ass Kikyo!” He turned away from her, but could see from the corner of his eye that she was still watching him and waiting for the truth. They sat together in silence for several minutes as Kikyo waited for him to speak again. Inuyasha glanced at her and let out a deep sigh.
It annoyed him that she was so patient and understanding. He wished she would argue with him, call him a jerk, maybe even sit him like Kag......... ‘Wait a damn minute,’ Inuyasha’s spine stiffened, ‘I don’t want Kikyo to be like Kagome! That clumsy stupid bitch did nothing but aggitate me and get in the way! That’s why I gave her to Kouga!! I’m the one who got the better end of the deal. After all, Kikyo is better than her in every way! But then.... why do I miss her so much?’ The hanyou released another sigh, letting his ears droop as he averted his face from Kikyo.
“If you want to pout, then go ahead, but I have business to take care of. As soon as I come back we are leaving.” Kikyo gave him a quick peck on the cheek and started walking toward the wolf den.
Kagome was talking to Sango but froze in mid sentence when she felt the presence of the jewel shards. From the amount of power she felt, it must have been Kikyo or Inuyasha near by “I “I can feel jewel shards approaching Sango.”
“Is it Naraku?” Sango asked, looking a little alarmed.
“No, whoever it is doesn’t have that many.” Kagome stood up and started walking toward the entrance.
“Oi, Kagome, you better come out here. Kikyo is here.” Kouga announced the miko’s presence and gave her a courteous bow when she neared his den.
Sango came out and took Miroku by the arm, “Come on Mirku. Let’s go back to our room and gather our things.”
He gave her a brief nod and looked at Kouga and Kagome, “You both know where we are if you need us.”
“Thanks Miroku, but I think everything will be alright.” Kagome waved them off and turned to Kikyo. “Would you like to come inside and talk.” Kagome motioned toward the door.
Kikyo nodded and entered. Her face held a small smile, unlike the usual frown or scowl that Kagome was so used to seeing.
“Would you like to sit down and have some tea?” Kagome offered.
“That is very nice of you, but no thank you Kagome. I came here to give you this.” Kikyo held out her hand. As she stood there a small white sphere started forming in her palm, it’s light flickering like the stars at night. “This is the remainder of your soul. Touch it and it will absorb back into your body where it belongs.”
Kagome reached out, brushing her fingers through the warm misty form. It surrounded her hand, slid up her arm and disappeared into her chest, “Thank you Kikyo for returning it to me and for saving my life.”
“You don’t need to thank me Kagome. I owe you so much for how I acted in the past, but please understand that I am a different person now. All the hatred and need for revenge disappeared when Inuyasha gave me the elixir.” Kikyo fixed her gaze at the cave floor. “I am sorry that he took such extreme measures to bring me back...”
Kagome interrupted Kikyo before she had a chance to go into further detail, “Well, at least everything worked out in the end, right? I mean, we both have males who love us and will one day have families, so at least some good came out of this whole deal.”
Kikyo reached out and hugged Kagome, “Thank you. Inuyasha and I wish you you and your mate to live long happy lives and have many pups. If you ever need us Kagome, come to Inuyasha’s forest.”
“Take care Kikyo. I hope you two have a happy life together too.” Kagome hugged her back and escorted her out the door. She returned to the bedroom and stood in the center of the room, lost in her thoughts. A small pang of sadness shot through her heart. No matter what Inuyasha did, or how much she loved Kouga, there was an underlying sadness when she fully realized that Inuyasha was now a part of her past. She missed arguing with him and watching his ears droop when he as upset or perk up when he tried eaves dropping on her and Sango’s conversations. ‘Why am I sad? I love Kouga. Besides, I always knew, deep in my heart that he would choose her over me. Maybe reality has finally sunk in...’
“Kagome?” her mates deep voice called from behind her, “Are you alright love? You seem sad.” Kouga circled his arms arounder her waist, resting his head on her shoulder as he listened to her breathe.
“I’m fine.” Kagome looked back at him and smiled, “Are you ready to go?”
“Anythime you are. Shippo is at Aika’s already. After we say goodbye and get your friends, we’ll leave.” he softly kissed her temple.

Inuyasha watched Kikyo walk down the mountain trail and approach his hiding place in the bushes.
“Are we finished here? The smell of wolves is starting to get on my nerves.”
“Why are you so grumpy today Inuyasha?” His attitude was starting to get on her nerves.
“Keh! I’m not grumpy! I just want to get back to where WE belong and away from all these smelly wolves!” he stood up, straightening his back and glanced at Kikyo, “So, did the whiney little bitch cry?”
“Are you referring to Kagome?” she crossed her arms waiting for his answer.
“Who the hell else would I be talking about?” he shot back indignantly.
“Why would you ask such a stupid question? What would Kagome have to abouabout? From what I have seen she has a loving mate, a nice warm home and friends who care for her. She is very lucky.”
“And just what the hell is that supposed to mean? Don’t you consider your self lucky Kikyo? I love you, I’ll build us a home near Kaeda and you practically know the whole damn village!!” Inuyasha’s ears stood straight up as he glared at her.
“What is your PROBLEM!” Kikyo shouted. “I don’t want to fight with you Inuyasha because you obviously have something on your mind that you’re not telling me about!” she turned away from him, walking into the forest in the direction of her village.
“THAT is what the problem is! You don’t argue with me! You don’t insist to know what the hell I am thinking and you never really get mad at me! You never yell at me like Kagome ....” his clawed hands clasped over his mouth the instant her name fell from his lips.
Kikyo froze for a moment. Did she hear him right? “Are you comparing me to her?”
Inuyasha cringed at the pain in her voice. “No..... no, I didn’t mean it like that Kikyo. It’s just that.... well.....I don’t know..... you’ve, changed some since the elixir, that’s all.”
“How have I changed?”
His ears drooped as he thought about her question, “You aren’t as outspoken as you once were.” Even he had to admit that the answer he gave her was pitiful and only a half truth. He secretly admired Kagome’s sharp mind and inner strength. She was much more determined than he ever gave her credit for. When Kagome came out of the den behind Kikyo, Inuyasha took a good look at her. Kagome looked healthy and happy. A trace of mating scents drifted on the wind when Kouga opened the flap of leather covering the cave entrance.
“That is such nonsense Inuyasha! In the past, before I was tricked into pinning you to the Goshinboku, there were many times you and I would sit together in the flower fields, enjoying each others company without saying a word. I never spoke to you in a harsh or aggressive manner. Don’t you remember what we had together? You liked me when I was calm and caring.” Kikyo shook her head, “No Inuyasha, I am not the one who has changed, it’s you.”
Warm hands cupped his face, bringing his eyes back to her, “Do you really want me as your mate, or have you changed your mind?” her words were nearly whispered as tears formed in her eyes.
He wrapped his arms around her in a tight embrace, “I love you Kikyo. Please, don’t ever think that I regret what has happened between us.”he pulled away from enough to look in her eyes, “If I had to wait another fifty, one hundred, even two hundred years form now, I would still want you to be my mate.”
Kikyo smiled and kissed him on the cheek. It was a relief to hear him say those words, but in the back of her mind, something kept nagging at her. Something was wrong, but what, she couldn’t quite put her finger on.
******************************************************************************
Kagome kissed Shippo goodbye and promised Aika to be back in time for the birth celebration. She hopped on Kouga’s back and waved at the rest of the wolf tribe, bidding them farewell. Kouga put Guinta and Hakkaku in charge while he was gone. The thought of how much chaos those two could cause in his absence made him cringe, but there was no one he trusted more to watch over the pack, even after the incident with Kagome running off. His mate was sneaky when she wanted to be, which was one more reason he loved her.
“Oi monk, do you think that over grown fur ball can keep up with me?” Kouga taunted as he glanced up at them.
Sango and Miroku were riding on Kirara’s back, just above the tree tops. Miroku’s arms circled Sango’s waist, holding her tighter as he looked down at the wolf demon, “Would you like to race and test your speed?”
Sango glanced back at her husband. Mirouku gave her a little wink and tightened his hold on her, it was his way of telling Sango to hold on tight.
Kouga laughed, “You’re on houshi!” He held onto Kagome’s legs as tight as he could without hurting her, “Hold on mate!”
“KYAAAAA!!” Kagome screamed as Kouga took off at top speed. Her hands hooked across his chest so she wouldn’t go flying off his back. The land scape was racing by as his bandaged feet pounded the earth, forcefully pushing him forward in an instinctual challenge for dominance over the group. A cloud of dust nearly enveloped them as Kouga leaped over rocks and dashed across the country side. Little did everyone know, but Kouga’s race wasn’t just for dominance, it also gave him a chance to work off his anxiousness. He was nervous about meeting Kagome’s family, especially because of the events that occurred over the last week. The travel time gave him a chance to think over an explanation that wouldn’t make him look like a complete jerk.
Kirara growled when he noticed Kouga was getting ahead of them. He increased his speed, nearly yelping as Sango painfully gripped the thick fur around his neck.
At the rate they were traveling it took several hours to reach the bone eaters well. Kouga grinned as he came to an abrupt halt in a clearing near the well. He was only 20 feet ahead of Kirara; the race had been close, but Kouga came out the victor. “Hah!” Kouga laughed as he let Kagome slide off his back, “I told you the hair ball couldn’t outrun me!”
Sango tapped her Hiraikotsu as she glared at Kouga, “Kagome, you had better warn your mate to watch how he talks about Kirara.”
Kagome looked at her friend and sighed, “Kouga, be nice.” Kagome warned, “Sango will hit you over the head! Just ask Miroku, he has the bumps to prove her temper!”
The wolf prince snorted as he watched Sango climb off of Kirara’s back. It wasn’t that he disliked Kagome’s human friends or that he wanted to argue with them, he just had a hard time accepting a female that challenged his dominance. Even though Kagome was strong willed, she seemed to silently acknowledge the fact that he was the stronger mate in their relationship and that he was was her caretaker.
“Whatever....” Kouga mumbled as he reached for Kagome’s hand, grasping it gently as he intertwined their fingers.
“Kagome-chan...” Sango approached her friend, “when you return, stop by Kaeda’s. Stay with us for a few days before you go back to the wolf den, please!? I really miss our ‘girl talks’.” she winked at Kagome, letting her know that they had plenty to gossip about in private.
“Oh...sure Sango.” Kagome giggled, earning a curious look from both males. “I’ll bring dinner back with me. We can have a cook out, just like old times.”
“Bye Sango, bye Miroku!” Kagome hugged them both. She and Kouga watched them disappear down the forest trail leading to the village.
“Ready?” Kagome asked as she reached or Kouga’s hand. His palm was sweaty and he looked a little pale.
“Honestly love? I’m not sure. What if your family hates me for what I’ve done to you?”
“What you’ve done to me?” Kagome repeated, “Kouga, I’ve told you before that I love you and I trust you with my life. Sure, things got off to a rocky start between us, but I’m happy now. I’m lucky to have you and I’m proud of you for who you are on the inside.” Kagome tapped her pointer finger on his chest, directly over his heart. “I love you for who you are Kouga, not because you are the wolf prince, but for the loud, aggressive, strong, sweet, caring male who will one day father our pups.” Kouga stood in front of her, gazing down at her, awestruck by the beauty and sincerity of her words. Her small, warm hand cupped his cheek, “There is no one else I would take more pride in presenting to my family as my mate than you.”
His eyes sparkled with love as he realized the depth of their bond. She meant every word and was completely sure of how she felt for him.
He cupped her face in his large hands, “Thank you love.” was all he could think to ss hes he leaned forward. His lips caressed hers, feeling them part for his entrance. Kouga took the opportunity to slide his tongue past her lips in an intimate toe curling kiss. Hesitantly, he pulled away. Arousal seeped into Kagome’s sweet scent, and no matter how he wanted to take her right now, he knew that she wanted to go home. He figured if Kagome appeared in front of her family in rumpled looking clothes, they would have some unwelcome suspicions.
Kouga’s stomach clenched as he looked down in the black depths of the dry well. It was time to stand before Kagome’s family and pray they found him worthy of being her mate.
