A growl rumbled low in Inuyasha’s throat as Kagome’s arms wrapped around his neck. The taste of the tears she had shed for him mingled with the heady essence of her mouth. Kami, how he loved her. Who else would foolishly risk their own life to protect such a worthless hanyou? No, not worthless. In her, Inuyasha had discovered his worth.

As his desire for her grew, Inuyasha was vaguely aware of how close he was to the edge of his reason. Though his youkai blood had almost completely receded, it was not far from the surface, and struggled to regain dominance. Kagome’s hands found their way inside his fire rat haori, tugging at the hadagi undershirt beneath. A desperate whimper rose within him as flesh touched flesh, her fingers brushing against his abdomen as she pulled the undershirt free of his hakama.

Inuyasha lowered her to the ground, drawing breath in quick and deep. Covering her body with his, he roughly crushed his mouth to hers, feeling her shiver against him. For a moment, the world was silent, save for the muted sounds issuing from Kagome and himself. The quickening of her heart pounded in his ears, blending with the thump of his own. The scent of her arousal intoxicated him, drugging him senseless.

Her body called to him, and his strove to answer it, but his heart kept him at bay. He couldn’t allow himself to lose control. It was too important that he wait until tomorrow, until she was ready to give herself to him, until his wife could become his mate. Inuyasha battled with himself, pulling away from her swollen lips, breathing hard to quicken the flow of oxygen to his brain.

Before Inuyasha could find to strength to form words, Kagome pulled him back to her again, lifting her head to meet his. She gently nibbled at his lip, once again making his blood boil. With a harsh gasp, he managed to grind out her name in warning before he lost himself in her, “Kagome…”

Kagome whimpered, “No,” as she entwined his hair through her fingers, refusing to let him leave her.

Raising his head to look into her eyes, Inuyasha tried once more, “Kagome, I won’t….”

She shook her head, cutting him off, “Please.” Her voice was a pleading whisper. Kissing the hollow of his throat, Kagome pushed his haori off his shoulders, “Please, Inuyasha….”

Did she understand? Inuyasha closed his eyes. Her lips trailed their way down his neck to his chest, each one stoking the fire that incinerated him. Growling in frustration, he pressed his rigidity against her, hoping she would realize the extent of their situation. To his surprise, Kagome gasped and arched to meet him. Staring down at her, disbelieving what his senses were telling him, Inuyasha watched as her eyes fluttered open, meeting his.

Kagome moistened her lips with her tongue and Inuyasha’s eyes followed it’s movement with a groan. She tried to tell him she wanted him, searched her addled brain for a way to express what she was feeling. With a hard tug, Kagome pulled the rest of his hadagi out of his hakama and pulled it off with the haori. The broad expanse of his chest left her breathless, and she leaned up to press her lips against the pale, smooth skin.

“Please,” Kagome managed to whisper again, feathering her fingers down to his abdomen to caress the strong muscles there.

“Oh, Kami,” Inuyasha whispered, lowering himself to kiss her. Kagome sighed as his tongue found hers, darting into her mouth to probe deeper. The night was warm, but the hair rose on his arms as he cupped her breast through her top. She was a bundle of inconsistencies - hard and soft, weak and strong, all at the same time. Her arms held him firmly, holding him close, but her body surrendered to him completely.

Inuyasha fingered the buttons on her blouse, carelessly attempting to undo them. His characteristic impatience got the better of him and he managed to avoid being hit by flying buttons as he tore it open. He grinned as Kagome quickly reached to undo her bra before he could destroy yet another article of clothing.

Delicately, Inuyasha traced a claw along the contours of her chest, making Kagome gasp softly as she shuddered beneath his touch. He lowered his face to her breast, taking pleasure in the fact that she responded to his breath against her skin. With deliberate leisure, Inuyasha ran the pads of his fingers over her, avoiding the sensitive nipples. The teasing caused Kagome to writhe a little, whimpering as he repeatedly moved his hand away before reaching the firm peaks.

Kagome’s mind no longer obeyed her. She found strength only to respond to his touch, to the sounds that issued from him. Just when she thought she could handle no more stimulation, Inuyasha’s mouth closed over her nipple. Gently grasping it between his teeth he flicked his tongue over it. She moaned his name, arching against him. Her hands automatically rose to find his ears, tenderly stroking them. A low hum thrummed through her body as Inuyasha purred in response. The reverberation buffeted her, making her mew slightly.

Inuyasha switched to her other breast, resuming his attentions upon her, answering her cries as she responded to his touch. Kagome dug her nails into his shoulders, wanting him closer. His fingers trailed their way down her stomach, making it flutter as he found the button to her jeans. She reached down to help him, desperate to remove the obstacles that separated them, but he brushed her hand away with a possessive grunt.

Inuyasha studiously tried to focus on the task before him, hardly able to see through the screen of his need. He fumbled for a moment before reacting with instinctive force and pulling the heavy material upwards with a jerk. To his great relief, the button released its hold and the zipper accommodatingly slipped downward under the vigor of the action. Carefully gripping the edges, Inuyasha slid the pants and underwear over her hips, Kagome lifting herself to assist him. Lastly, her shoes and socks disappeared as well.

Kneeling at her feet, Inuyasha stared at Kagome reflected in the moonlight. Her body glowed as the light worshiped her, making her look ethereal. A light blush rose to her cheeks as she noticed his attention. Playfully, Inuyasha lifted one of her feet to kiss the sole, amused when she moaned softly at the tickle of his breath. He wanted to leave no inch of her untouched; unkissed. Slowly working upwards, he explored her body, learning the things that excited her.

A kiss on the underside of her knee made gooseflesh rise to her skin. His claw brushing the inside of her thigh stopped her breath. The flicker of his tongue along her entrance caused her to cry aloud, persuading him to continue. Pushing her thighs further apart, Inuyasha slowly probed the opening at her center, the essence of her femininity. He thought he’d go mad as her scent climbed, stirring his senses. He could feel the pulse of her blood rushing through her, making her swell around him.

Kagome’s cries grew louder, more insistent. She fought to bring herself closer to him, but she was held captive by his embrace. The heat that had smoldered within her began to flare, extending to every part of her body. Her breath came faster as a tingling sensation crept over her flesh, making her feel as though she’d lose consciousness.

Inuyasha pulled away, determined not to push her over the edge... not yet. Pulling himself up her body, he hovered above her, panting as he waited a moment for the pleasant tension to dissipate just a bit. When her eyes opened and focused on his, Inuyasha took her hand in his, guiding her to the knot in his obi. As her fist closed around the loose end, he released her, bracing himself.

Her eyes never left his as she gently tugged at the belt, allowing his hakama to fall loose. Rising, Inuyasha removed the rest of his clothing, standing naked before her. Kagome’s eyes roamed his body, her gaze lovingly caressing him. She sat up as he knelt beside her, drawing her against his chest. He placed his hand on the side of her neck, tracing the spot where he would mark her as his, forever.

“I want you,” he whispered roughly, giving her one last chance to stop him. Kagome responded by shyly placing her hand on the one part of his body that could offer no resistance.

Groaning, Inuyasha pressed her backward, taking her mouth fiercely. He caught her lips with his as he held himself above her. Inuyasha helped Kagome guide him to the entrance of her innermost recesses. He broke their kiss for a moment, looking into her eyes as he told her, “I love you,” and then took her in one swift movement.

Kagome gasped, then moaned as a sense of completeness overtook her. She grasped his hair in her hands, anchoring herself as Inuyasha withdrew once more. In a maddeningly languid pace, he rocked himself inside her, making her whimper with each stroke. She wrapped her legs around his waist, desperate to take all of him in.

Inuyasha groaned, as her softness clenched tighter around him. He was deliberately trying to go slowly, but his heart rate sped up with each stroke and his youkai blood began to bubble to the surface, responding to the call of its mate. Her soft cries fueled his passion, causing him to pick up speed once more.

Her every response heightened his arousal. Her heart competed with the beat of his heart, her scent made him hungry to be deeper within her, and each cry was echoed by one of his own. He filled her, yet pushed to be closer, to melt into her. Kagome groaned, grasping at his shoulder. He could feel the youkai beginning to take over, but he could no longer worry about the consequences. It was too late.

His mouth crushed against hers, swallowing her moans as his fangs caught her lip. Inuyasha felt her swell around him before a sudden cry announced her climax. Kagome pulled him closer, breathing hard as she continued to match his rhythm.

“Inuyasha....” It was his name exhaled in her breathy whisper that finally sent him reeling. Inuyasha gasped, his head falling back as his youkai blood gained dominance. Inuyasha fell still as he began to transform.

Kagome’s heart pounded in her chest. As she watched, purple lines appeared on Inuyasha’s face and his fangs elongated. His eyes shone bright red and his claws broke through the skin of her shoulder blades as they grew wickedly sharp and long. A low growl rose in his chest as he stared down at her, breathing roughly.

Inside her, Kagome felt Inuyasha swell and for a moment she thought that he was approaching his own peak. With a gasp, she realized that he was growing larger. Inuyasha grinned down at her fiercely, as he slowly eased himself out of her, then pushed in again, making sure she noticed the difference. Kagome moaned loudly, arching off the ground, feeling as though she would split in two.

Inuyasha growled her name as he began to move within her again. His pace was infuriatingly slow and Kagome began to shake as a tingling sensation prickled over every inch of her flesh. He picked up speed and her cries resounded through the forest surrounding them. She clung tightly to his shoulders, her nails cutting into his skin as she grasped tighter.

As always happened when Inuyasha transformed, his mind fixated on a singular purpose. Every fiber of his being desired to possess Kagome, to make her his mate. He groaned as she began to contract tightly around him in waves that threatened to carry her off the ground. He captured her mouth, making her cry out as he caught her lip between his teeth.

Kagome closed her eyes against the barrage of sensation that engulfed her. For her, nothing existed before this and nothing would after. Her paralyzed brain could only make sense of one thing, and that was Inuyasha. At every point where their bodies connected, currents exploded between them like static. The sound of her own breathing sounded foreign to her, as though the two of them existed in a world outside of reality where such trivial things as air were no longer important.

Awash in a zenith of delirium, Kagome opened her eyes and was electrified by the instantaneous communion that Inuyasha’s eyes made with hers. Although he was full youkai, the hanyou she loved most of all was there, gazing at her through aphrodisia laden vision. He had not lost himself in his youkai blood, as he had feared.

Inuyasha kept his eyes locked with Kagome as he thrust into her deeply, a soft, hungry whine issuing from him. He needed her, needed this. He had always feared not being in control, but for once, he wanted to lose himself and surrender his entire being to this woman who had so enraptured him that the thought of a life without her was inconceivable. Another spasm jolted through her, and Inuyasha moaned as her fever was transmitted to him as well.

Kagome was held prisoner by the surge of energy that continued to flow through her. Inuyasha lowered his head to kiss her throat as blood rushed into her head, screaming in her ears. His breath against her skin was inebriating, and she trembled at its caress. She felt his mouth close on her throat, grazing the skin with his lips tenderly as his cries began to intensify.

As he plunged into Kagome again, his fangs sank into her neck, claiming her. Inuyasha began throbbing inside of her as he took his release. His heart pounded against her’s as he collapsed against his mate, their bodies thrumming with intensity. Kagome whimpered, unable to feel any pain as her body shuddered through it’s final climax. She held him tightly against her, incapable of doing anything else for a time.

Slowly, Inuyasha’s mind cleared and he was himself again. Carefully, he extracted his fangs from Kagome’s neck. A quick glance at her face showed him that she was okay. He was afraid he had hurt her. Without removing himself from her, Inuyasha wrapped his arms around her, rolling onto his back with Kagome on top of him. For a while, the two lay there together as the sounds of the night returned them to the world.

For a long time, neither of them spoke. Inuyasha cradled Kagome against his chest, thanking whichever Kami had accepted his prayers and given him this. Were he to die tomorrow, it would have been worth having the chance to lay here with his lover in his arms, knowing that she loved him.

From the moment she had freed Inuyasha from Kikyou’s curse, Kagome had given him a reason to exist. What had begun as his desire to possess the Shikon no Tama had grown to include a need to protect this mortal girl. He had trusted her life to no one but himself, and ultimately, his lust for the Jewel had been replaced with love for someone he’d felt he had no right to want. Now that Naraku had been destroyed, and the Shikon no Tama was safe, Kagome had once again given his life purpose, and that purpose was the most noble thing he’d ever been entrusted with.

Kagome lifted her head to search Inuyasha’s eyes, “What are you thinking?” She asked quietly.

Inuyasha stroked her hair in an uncommonly tender way, “I was wondering what would have happened if the Shikon no Tama hadn’t brought you through the well to me.”

Kagome smiled softly, resting her head against his shoulder, “I wonder which it was?” she murmured.

“Hmmm?”

“Whether the Jewel brought me or whether I brought the Jewel,” Kagome met his eyes again, “You’re my soul mate, Inuyasha... not even five hundred years can change that.” Inuyasha smiled as she began to drift off against him.

Suddenly, Kagome jerked, lifting her head to stare at him.

“What?”

“Kami,” She climbed off of him, searching for her clothing on the ground.

Inuyasha frowned, suddenly worried. “What’s wrong?”

“I told my mother that I was just coming to see if you’d returned to the village yet. I didn’t say how long I’d be gone but she’s probably wondering where I am.” Kagome had pulled on her jeans, stuffing the panties into a pocket. She balanced on one leg, trying to shove her foot into a shoe before repeating the dance on the other leg.

“Hey,” Inuyasha caught her before she fell, pulling her to him. His kiss became harder and he heard her other shoe fall to the ground as her arms crept around his neck. Breathing ragged again, Inuyasha pulled away, closing his eyes. “Let’s get you home,” he whispered, turning to get dressed himself.

Sticking her socks in another pocket, Kagome put on the remaining shoe and her bra before picking up her buttonless shirt, staring at it.

Inuyasha grinned sheepishly, “Here,” he said, wrapping his haori around her tightly. When both were ready to go, he lifted her onto his back and took off through the woods. They weren’t too far from the well and it only took him half the time to reach it that it had taken her to find him earlier in the evening. Without stopping, he leapt into the well and jumped upwards again after landing softly on the other side.

He brought Kagome down to her house, figuring to enter by his usual route. Inuyasha made no sound as he landed on the roof beneath her bedroom window and, raising it quietly, he made sure no one was in the room before allowing her to enter and following her inside.

The house was quiet and Kagome looked at the clock on her night stand. It was ten... she’d been gone for five hours. Quickly, Kagome changed into her pajamas, grinning as Inuyasha sat on her bed, openly watching her. Indicating that she’d be right back, Kagome stuck her head outside the bedroom door, listening for signs of life.

Figuring her mother had already gone to bed, Kagome crept down the hall to her room, knocking lightly on the door. “Mama? I’m home now!” She called softly in case the woman was asleep.

“Was Inuyasha there?” Her mother called back to her sleepily.

“He’s fine... he came back a few hours ago,” Kagome explained, hoping the slight tremor in her voice went unnoticed. “I’ll see you in the morning, Mama.”

“Goodnight, sweetie.”

“Night!” Kagome returned to her own room, leaning back against the door after she’d closed it behind her. On her bed, Inuyasha had stretched himself out and motioned for her to come to him. She lay down beside him, smiling as he made her rest her head against his chest, taking pleasure in her closeness.

“Are you staying?” She asked him.

“Keh. Only till you fall asleep. I’ll go back to get the others for the wedding.” Inuyasha grinned at the pout that appeared on her face, “None of that, bitch,” he whispered affectionately, kissing the top of her head.

Kagome frowned, “You never did explain what that means. In Kouga’s lair I realized that you mean something when you call me that. I always thought you were insulting me.”

Inuyasha chuckled, “I was, at first. Then I used it to keep from getting too close, but after a while, the meaning sort of changed. A bitch is what inu youkai call their mates. It’s not insulting... just... possessive. My mind knew you were meant to be with me even before I did.” He shrugged, “We don’t always communicate that well.”

Kagome grinned as her eyes drifted closed, “That must be why it stopped offending me so much. At least, I figured we were even because I got to s-i-t you whenever I wanted.”

“You wanted?” He laughed softly, flicking her nose with a finger as she laughed with him.

Settling down again, he held her close. “Go to sleep, woman.”

As Kagome drifted into sleep, she remembered something she hadn’t fully realized earlier. Just before Inuyasha had marked her, as a full-youkai he’d whispered that he loved her. She smiled.

Long after her breathing had settled, Inuyasha continued to watch Kagome. Finally, he eased off of the bed, careful not to wake her. Pulling his haori off of the chair where she had put it, he covered her gently before heading back towards the well.

Smiling as he ran, Inuyasha shook his head, ‘My mate....’

********************
At the foot of the Gankyo-ji Mountain of Mt. Hakusan, the upper Uchinami River forms a pond with springs that run into it, but never out. The woman stood on its banks, remembering how the lake had earned the name eHakusan Sendaga Ike… ‘A thousand snakes.’

It had been nine hundred years earlier. A man appeared on this mountain at a time when her people had ruled the snowy peaks of the long dormant volcano. The woman recalled watching him from the shadows as he stood before the pond, spreading his arms wide with a staff in one hand. A force of blinding white spiritual power had burst forth from the monk’s body, covering the surface of the water. Within moments, every snake that dwelled in its depths had risen from the pond, bound by the white energy.

The priest had moved his arms, forcing the hoard of serpents into an opening in the wall of the mountain, which he then sealed. All of her people had disappeared, and only two remained, Kuroseirei(1), and her father. Her mother had been the ruler of their tribe, and had vanished along with the others.

Kuroseirei’s lip curled with disdain, remembering how her craven father had run from there, taking her to the distant ocean where they had lived ever since. The still air began to stir in response to her anger, whipping her hair. She had killed him not long ago, when she was finally strong enough to dominate the nearly two thousand year old youkai. At last, free of her father’s oppressive cowardice and strengthened by whatever power he’d possessed, Kuroseirei soon discovered, however, that a great evil had risen over the land, and threatened to bend all other youkai to its will.

So she’d waited. For fifty-three years Kuroseirei had bided her time, waiting in her father’s palace beneath the sea for the opportune moment to rise and claim the lands her mother had held reign over. In one night, the dark miasma had increased tremendously, and then departed entirely from the earth. When she was sure the time had finally arrived, Kuroseirei had ascended from the depths and began the long journey to the place of her creation.

The atmosphere around her was filled with the crackle of pure energy, remainders of that ancient monk. Kuroseirei felt it spark against her skin and it would have hurt her to be there if she hadn’t taken her father’s youkai energy to add to her own power. She believed that she was now strong enough to rectify the offenses committed against her people.

Kuroseirei quickly located the space in the mountain where her tribe had been locked away. She was pleased that not much change had occurred in the time she’d been gone. A fine tendril of her people’s scent came to her, and she smiled. Lifting a razor clawed hand to the stone surface, Kuroseirei placed her palm against the rock and sent a surge of her own energy into it, easily overwhelming the force of the barrier and shattering it.

As the monk’s blessing relinquished its hold on the opening in the mountain, a hush fell over the wilderness. Sinuous wisps of miasma slithered from the cavity, coiling upward to hover over the mountain as it once had. Kuroseirei leaned forward to peer into the opening with a triumphant grin. A forked tongue flicked from between her ruby lips, tasting the air. “Come out my family. You are free.”

The stone wall began to tremor, then shake violently as a sound like that of rushing water began to intensify. A cascade of snakes flooded from the opening, hissing in rapture as the moonlight gleamed off of each shiny scale. The land was once again alive with their song and the rising black mist soon swallowed all traces of the old priest’s aura. The surface of the lake boiled as its former inhabitants returned home once more, writhing in the ecstasy of their emancipation.

Kuroseirei watched the jubilant procession silently. As the last snake left the mountain prison, she picked it up, turning it to gaze into its eyes, “Not you, mother. You shall serve another purpose.” Her jaws unhinged as she bit into the thrashing serpent, absorbing blood and energy with abandon.

Kagome awoke early, alone in her bed. With a sigh, she snuggled deeper under the haori Inuyasha had apparently wrapped around her before leaving. There were still a few minutes left until her alarm went off, and Kagome relished each lazy moment before she would be caught up in the frenzy of the long day ahead.

Stretching languorously, Kagome grinned at the warm glow that filled her from head to foot. She put her hand to her neck, fingering the sensitive wound that already seemed to be healing. Sitting up just as the alarm clock began to ring, she turned it off, threw on a robe and went downstairs to the bathroom.

Locking the door behind her, Kagome removed the robe to more closely inspect the marking. Leaning closer to the mirror, she confirmed that the area was bruised, but the two punctures were beginning to blend together the way they should. Smiling at her reflection, Kagome undressed for a bath. As the tub filled with hot water foaming with the added bubble bath, she stood naked before the mirror to examine her self.

Other than the bite on her neck, she didn’t look any different. Kagome grinned, not sure what she’d been expecting to see. Maybe some physical difference to echo the change she felt within. Turning off the running faucet, Kagome added her special lavender scented oil – it was the only one that Inuyasha actually liked her to wear in this time, since all the others irritated his sensitive nose and he threw a fit if she wore anything scented in his era.

Climbing into the tub, Kagome winced as her shoulders slipped beneath the surface. Sitting up, she craned her neck to try and see what had stung her. On the back of each shoulder blade were semicircles of four small, shallow cuts. She stared for a moment, frowning as she tried to remember what might have caused such a pattern. Then it hit her… Inuyasha’s claws. The sharp nails had cut into her when he’d become a full youkai. In the heat of the moment, she’d barely noticed.

Kagome rested her head against the edge of the tub, carefully keeping her shoulders above the water level. The warmth seeped into her muscles, easing aches she hadn’t known were there. Closing her eyes, Kagome allowed herself to relax. Lightly meditating, she pictured her mind as a glowing pink orb. Sending feelers from it, Kagome practiced reaching out with her energy, trying to extend her senses throughout the whole house.

It took less time then it had yesterday to locate her family. A vague impression of her mother’s aura came to Kagome from the kitchen, and she found Souta in his bedroom, along with Shippou and Kohaku. Jii-Chan was in the living room, and his pale green aura was tinted with yellow, leading her to think he might be anxious about something.

Another presence was nearby and Kagome frowned. No one else was in the house and she had been very careful to limit her search, keeping her power within her ability to control. The presence was outside and above their house and, as Kagome inhaled, she realized she could smell him. Inuyasha was here. Surprise almost made her lose her focus, but she managed to hold on to his scent, blocking out everything else and locking onto him.

It was definitely Inuyasha. Kagome could not only smell him, but if she focused hard enough, she could even see him. The image was slightly fuzzy, but his face appeared clearly. This was far different from what she was used to. Normally she only received the impression of the person’s aura and a sense of how far they were from her, and she had never seen this far away without trying to.

The spiritual power she contained could easily overwhelm her until she gained the strength to control it. Though she spent time in practice every day, it was hard work and she was careful not to push her limits before she was ready. Something else had allowed this vision through her vigilantly erected barriers.

Quickly finishing her bath, Kagome wrapped herself in a towel and hurried upstairs, managing to make it to her bedroom just as the front door opened and Inuyasha called a greeting to her mother. Sango and Miroku’s voice floated up to her as they entered the kitchen, and Kagome’s frown deepened. She’d been able to see Inuyasha’s arrival plainly, but she hadn’t realized the others were with him until they entered the house.

She brushed her hair, accidentally scrapping the tender, bruised flesh on her neck. Wincing, a thought occurred to her. Was it possible that becoming Inuyasha’s mate had given Kagome a heightened awareness of him? It was possible, and definitely something she’d have to ask him about later. But if that were true, than what about last night? While she’d been standing at the well, Kagome had a vision of him and she’d been struck with the knowledge that Inuyasha needed her.

‘No, that was different. I wasn’t trying to see anything at all then.’ Sitting down on her bed, Kagome sighed. Apparently there was a lot more to her powers then met the eye. However, now was not the time to deal with all the details, no matter how curious.

A soft knock on the door announced the arrival of Sango, come to offer her help to the bride. Smiling, she hugged Kagome, “Good morning! Have you eaten anything yet?” When Kagome shook her head no, Sango nodded, “I’ll bring something up to you. Inuyasha’s eating breakfast in the kitchen with our brothers and Shippou, even though he already ate with Miroku and I before we left this morning.”

Kagome grinned, “He’s a growing hanyou.” As Sango turned to leave, Kagome suddenly realized something she’d forgotten to do. “Sango, wait! There’s something I need you to help me with.” Kagome ran to her desk and searched a drawer for what she needed.

Finding the box that contained the rutilated quartz Kaede had bequeathed to her, Kagome removed the stone and pressed it into Sango’s hand. “I meant to do this in person but since Inuyasha got back so late…. Give this to him for me and call up the stairs when he’s holding it. Tell him I have a present for him today. I’ve been working on it for a while and I hope it works.” Without questioning Kagome, even though she looked like she wanted to, Sango left the room, leaving the door open behind her.

*****************

Inuyasha knelt at the table with the three pajama clad boys and Miroku, eating heartily. All of them kept glancing his way, searching for signs of nervousness, but the hanyou was anything but nervous about the impending wedding. As far as he was concerned, last night had sealed them as mates. The ceremony was for everyone else but the couple involved. He knew that Kagome felt the same way he did, but he remembered her words on the evening that he had proposed to her officially. She had said something about making sure he was hers in every way, which included a proper marriage in her world. Put that way, Inuyasha couldn’t make any complaint about it.

Sango came into the kitchen and Inuyasha noticed that Miroku immediately perked up. Grinning, he shook his head at the monk before realizing that Sango had approached him instead of her husband.

“Kagome says she has a gift for you today.” Handing Inuyasha the crystal, Sango added, “she says she’s been working on it for a while and that she hopes it works.”

Now Inuyasha looked worried, “She hopes it works? What is she…”

“Ready, Kagome!” Sango called upstairs as Inuyasha jumped to his feet.

“Wait just a damn…” He broke off as Kagome’s familiar aura surrounded him. ‘She’s fucking purifying me? So much for that shit about her liking me the way I am!’ After a moment, the light disappeared and everyone in the room gasped. Inuyasha looked down at his hands and saw that his claws had not disappeared and his hair was still silver. Around the room, everyone was staring at him in amazement.

Miroku was the first to speak. Grinning, he began to nod his head, “Ah! I see… clever.” Understanding seemed to dawn on Sango’s face as she smiled and nodded too.

“What did she do to me?” Not waiting for a reply, Inuyasha stormed off to the bathroom, stopping before the mirror. It only took him a moment to realize what was missing. His ears… his hanyou ears, anyway. Instead, a set of human ones sat on either side of his head. Surprised, Inuyasha reached up to touch the lobes, not sure how to feel about their appearance.

Inuyasha wanted to trust Kagome. He did trust her... he just didn’t understand. She loved him. He knew she did. So why would she change him? Was she embarrassed? It couldn’t be that. There had to be an explanation.

Miroku’s reflection appeared behind his, meeting his eyes in the mirror, worriedly. Inuyasha sighed, looking away from the probing gaze, “Am I missing something? I always thought Kagome liked my ears.”

Miroku placed a firm hand on his friend’s shoulder, “Think, Inuyasha. Every time you go out in public in Kagome’s time, you have to hide your ears. The mortals in this era wouldn’t understand and it would cause trouble. Kagome knows how much you hate hiding and especially wearing that hat, so she provided you with a temporary solution.” The monk smiled, “Kagome could have chosen to marry you in human form on the night of the new moon, but she wanted to marry the hanyou she fell in love with… the real you.”

Inuyasha shook his head, “But… this isn’t the real me. Not all of me, anyway.”

“Look closer Inuyasha.” Miroku pointed at Inuyasha’s head in the mirror.

Confused, Inuyasha stared at himself. The human ears were still there, and his youkai ears still gone. Closing his eyes, the half-youkai clenched his fist around the quartz Sango had brought him, wanting to understand Kagome’s actions. Looking again, something happened. His image wavered slightly.

Frowning, Inuyasha leaned closer to the glass and concentrated on Kagome. He reminded himself how much she loved him, just as he was, when almost no one else in his life had. As warmth began to ease the fear in his heart, his reflection shimmered again, then changed. The mirror now showed Inuyasha in his familiar form. No human ears were attached to his head, only the white triangles that, but for one night a month, he had lived with all his life.

Miroku spoke to him. “It would seem that Kagome learned how to do the concealment spell that Jinenji told us about. It’s still you… the human ears are just an illusion. I realized what she had done because I could sense the presence of your youkai ears.”

Inuyasha reached up to touch his real ears. “Why couldn’t I…”

“You were afraid.” Miroku’s answer was simple, with no mocking in his voice.

A slow grin spread over Inuyasha’s face, “I want to see her.”

Miroku chuckled, “All in good time, my friend. Now it’s time for you to get dressed. We have a wedding to get through.”

******************

By the time Sango returned upstairs, Kagome was dressed in her formal under-kimono, staring at the wall with her hairbrush in hand. Jumping slightly at the taijiya’s entrance, Kagome smiled weakly, “Did he understand?”

“Not at first, but Miroku helped him work it out. That was an incredibly powerful spell you did, Kagome. I could feel the energy in your aura. Where did you learn it?”

“From Jinenji,” Kagome grinned, handing Sango her hairbrush as the woman stood behind her, “When I was in the hospital, I asked him to explain the basics to me, knowing it would come in handy someday. When I hugged him good-bye, I suddenly could see how it worked. It took me a while to get it down, but once I did, it was easy.”

Running the brush through Kagome’s hair, Sango looked proud, “ That’s an amazing accomplishment. Didn’t it tire you at all?”

“A little, but I meditated this morning so my strength will come back… ouch!” Kagome hissed through her teeth as the hairbrush accidentally scraped Inuyasha’s mark. Covering the wound with her hand, Kagome tried to play it off, despite the incredible pain.

Sango’s eyes were wide, “Kagome, you’re hurt! Let me see it!”

Standing up, Kagome tried to back away, but was trapped by the desk, “It’s fine, Sango… just a little scratch.”

Frowning, Sango pulled her friend’s hand away from her neck. Kagome blushed deeply as the exterminator brushed the hair away to examine the bruise. Surprised, Sango’s mouth dropped open before she could compose herself. She sat down on Kagome’s bed and watched her friend sink back into the desk chair, not meeting her eyes. The girl looked embarrassed and Sango could completely understand why. She’d recognized the mark the moment she got a clear look at it.

Kagome sighed, staring at the floor, “Last night… after I left you, I went back to the well. Before I could go through it, I had this vision of Inuyasha, and I sensed that he needed me. I ran and it was like I was being guided to him. He was being attacked by this… thing, and kept getting cut. The wounds weren’t bleeding, but he was really weak and I… panicked. I’m not sure how I did it, but I forced out its soul and purified it. Inuyasha took care of the rest. After that, I was so relieved he was okay and then we were kissing and….”

Sango looked down to hide her grin. In the week since her own wedding, she and Miroku had fought a few smaller demons in the village and both of them had hurried home afterwards. She definitely knew what the adrenaline of battle could do to a person.

Meeting Kagome’s eyes, she knelt on the floor before her, taking a hand. “ Kagome, I’m so happy for you.”

Kagome looked surprised, “You’re not… ashamed? It was the night before our wedding!”

Sango eyed her, “Are you ashamed?”

Immediately, Kagome shook her head, “No. It was my decision and maybe it’s odd, but being Inuyasha’s mate means more to me than being his wife. Does that make any sense?”

“Not at all. You live in our world more than in your own. Human conventions are much stricter in our time, but for as long as I’ve traveled with the group, you and Inuyasha have been each other’s family. You’ve taught him so much about humanity, so it’s only natural that you would take on some of his ways too.”

Kagome grinned, “I guess this is better than adopting his personality.”

Hugging her friend, Sango smiled, “Congratulations. Are you happy?”

Eyes shining, Kagome nodded, “I know it sounds cliche but... I’ve never felt happier in my entire life.”

“I know exactly what you mean.” Finishing Kagome’s hair in the traditional wedding style called bunkin-takashimada(2), and completing the look with a set of beautiful lacquered combs, Sango stood back to examine the result. “You look wonderful.”

Kagome smiled. Going to the door, she unzipped the garment bag that hung on its back. In her time, most modern brides had taken on more Western wedding customs due to the high prices involved in a traditional Shinto ceremony. It wasn’t unusual for a woman to wear a fairy tale inspired gown in a Christian ceremony and for the groom to wear a regular tuxedo. However, since Kagome had grown up on her family’s shrine, the ceremony would be held there and therefore as traditional as possible.

The shiro-maku(3) was the same one her mother had worn at her own wedding to Kagome’s father, in the family shrine twenty years earlier. As Sango helped her into it, Kagome was glad that the dress had a higher neckline and covered Inuyasha’s mark. Her mother probably wouldn’t recognize it if she had seen the bruise, but the bride would have one heck of a time explaining it anyway.

Just as the girls finished adjusting the dress, Mrs. Higurashi entered the room with a soft knock, staring at her grown-up daughter. It was hard for the woman to believe that the young lady sitting before her was the same little girl who’s knees she had kissed, when as a three year old she had fallen while trying to climb the Goshinboku. It didn’t even seem possible that this was the teenager that only three short years ago had made the decision to follow a half-demon five hundred years into the past, giving up almost any hope of a normal life.

Smiling to keep the tears from her eyes, the mother kissed her daughter. “You look beautiful, Kagome.”

*******************

Inuyasha stood in the middle of Souta’s bedroom, frowning at the Montsuki kimono(4). Dressed only in the black and white pleated hakama, he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing.

“Is something the matter, Inuyasha? Not having second thoughts, are we?” Miroku teased.

The hanyou snorted, “Keh, as if. I’d go through with this even if I had to fight a thousand youkai to get to the shrine.... It’s just this kimono.”

Miroku raised an eyebrow, “Is it an evil kimono?”

“Shut up, would ya? I’m trying to think!”

The houshi kept his mouth shut and nodded placidly, keeping his snappy comebacks to himself as Inuyasha continued to stare at the garment with a bemused expression on his face.

After a few minutes of silence, Miroku expected the kimono to catch fire, so intent was the half-demon’s focus. “Inuyasha, the kimono is fine. It’s almost exactly like the one I wore last week.”

“But it’s not...” Inuyasha mumbled, shaking his head. The color was the same, although the monk’s hakama had been solid black instead of alternating black and white. The haori overcoat was identical to the other groom’s, but something about the kimono....

Snapping his fingers, Inuyasha grinned. “That’s it!” Turning to Souta, who had been watching from the corner of the room, the hanyou pointed at him, “Go get you mother for me.” With a quick nod, Souta left his room, heading upstairs for Kagome’s.

Miroku watched as Inuyasha began riffling through the pile of his discarded clothing, searching for something. “I assume I’ll find out what’s going on someday, right?”

Inuyasha stood upright, clutching a wooden box in his hand, “Ah-ha!” Grinning at Miroku, the hanyou opened the box to show him the family crest inside. “Your kimono had your family crest on it. That’s what was missing from mine. When I went to see Sesshoumaru after your wedding, and he gave me ours.”

Lifting the beautiful seal, Miroku frowned, “Why would Sesshoumaru give you a family heirloom?”

Inuyasha shrugged, “Dunno. He said our father left it with him to give to me.” Taking back the crest, he went to the bed and gathered up the kimono.

Mrs. Higurashi opened the door. “Did you need something, Inuyasha?”

“Could you help me with this?” He handed her the kimono and crest, “Is there time?”

Brushing a finger over the intricate detail, his future mother-in-law nodded, smiling, “It’s perfect. Give me just a few minutes.”

**********************

Kagome was just about ready. She was dressed, her hair was done and she had already applied the traditional white body make-up that symbolized purity. Laid out on the desk before her were the accessories a bride wore for good luck - a little purse, or hakoseko; a small encased sword, or kaiken; and a fan she would wear tucked into her obi to ensure a happy future(5). Her mother had left a few minutes earlier to help Inuyasha with something, and as the minute hand began inching its way closer to noon, Kagome was starting to get nervous.

Sango had changed into the coral and yellow kimono that she had worn to her own wedding reception, and now sat on Kagome’s bed. Noticing her friend’s sudden anxiety, the woman smiled reassuringly, “Don’t worry Kagome, I’m sure Inuyasha is fine.”

Shaking her head, Kagome glanced at the window. From outside, the sounds of a gathering crowd rose up to them. “It’s not that... it’s the wedding. I feel like I’m on stage.”

Pulling back the curtain, Sango glanced down into the yard. “It doesn’t look like there are too many people... maybe thirty but they’re all heading up towards the shrine so I’m not certain.”

“Thirty?” Kagome sank down into her desk chair. “Who did Mama invite? I don’t think I know that many people!”

Sinking down beside the girl, Sango put a hand on Kagome’s knee, “Relax. This is just a formality. As far as the two of you are concerned, you’re already married. All you have to do now is create a place for him in your world. Today is about you and Inuyasha, so don’t let anything else get in the way of that.”

Taking a deep breath, Kagome took Sango’s hand in hers, “Thanks. I’m glad you’re here, Sango. I don’t know if I could do this without you.” The two girls hugged, both of them feeling blessed to have the other as a friend and sister.

A knock at the door sounded, and Kagome went to answer it, surprised to see Jii-Chan waiting beyond. As she let him in, she noticed that the nervous aura that she had sensed surrounding him this morning had grown, practically turning his skin yellow.

The old man went to the window and stared out, not looking at his granddaughter. He cleared his throat as Kagome and Sango glanced at each other in confusion.

“Kagome...” he began, hesitantly, “as patriarch of this family, there are some things I must tell you about getting married... about your, uh, marital duties.”

Heat rose in Kagome’s face and she began to fervently pray that the earth would open beneath her feet and swallow her instantaneously. ‘Kami, please don’t let this go any further!’

The door opened and Souta rushed in, “Jii-Chan! I think one of the guests might have ruined your bonzai!”

Everything else forgotten at the threat to his beloved trees, Jii-Chan whirled around, eyes wide. “My bonzai? Which one? What happened?”

Souta looked frantic, “I’m not sure... you’d better go check!” As the old man rushed from the room, muttering angrily, Souta relaxed and grinned at his sister. “You owe me big time.”

Kagome’s mouth dropped open, “How did you....”

“I heard him practicing the speech all morning. I’ve been working on a plan to interrupt him ever since.” Souta looked proud of his successful rescue.

“Thanks. I promise I’ll make it up to you.” Kagome smiled at her brother, making him blush.

“You look great, Nee-chan.”

“So do you.” The teenager was wearing an outfit very similar to the one Inuyasha usually wore. He could have opted for a more western style suit, but Kagome knew the outfit made her brother feel important, and was his way of showing his respect for Inuyasha.

Souta looked embarrassed, “I’d better get back. Miroku’s changed already and Inuyasha’s just finishing up now.” Surprising Kagome with a quick hug, he rushed out of the bedroom, closing the door behind him.

Sango grinned at her friend, “You’re brother’s going to be a good man when he grows up.”

“He’s grown up so much already…. It feels like it was only yesterday that Inuyasha and I helped him out with his first crush. Now he’s almost the same age I was when I started going through the well.” Kagome shook her head, “It’s just amazing.”

“I know what you mean. Sometimes I look at Kohaku and I marvel that he’s the same boy I’ve known since his birth, and yet so much is different about him. What he went through with Naraku… it aged him in some ways. I’m surprised he’s been able to keep as much of himself as he has.” Sango met Kagome’s eyes, “I’m so glad that Kohaku was able to come through the well with us. Having Souta and Shippou as friends has done a lot to repair the damage. He’s starting to remember how to be a kid again.”

Kagome smiled, “Don’t worry, Sango. Kohaku is strong, like you. He’ll heal, and we’ll all start building good memories to replace the bad ones.”

A moment of silence passed between them as both girls realized that they would all have an eternity to learn how to live, after devoting their lives to the defeat of Naraku and the safe return of the Shikon no Tama for so long. Though each of them had lost much in their struggle, the fact that they were all alive was something none of them had dared to hope for.

The girls remembered their fears, those they loved who could’ve so easily been taken from them. Inuyasha and Miroku. Shippou, Kohaku and Kirara. While they would continue to fight for the protection of the world, Kagome and Sango now had the advantage of knowing that their strength lay in their unity, and that was the easiest of all weapons to wield. None of them could imagine separating from the others now. From out of adversity, a family had been born.

A though occurred to Kagome, and she frowned, “Where are Kohaku and Shippou? I can’t sense them in the house.”

Sango glanced at the clock, which was odd since she couldn’t tell time. “Oh, they’re probably outside greeting the guests. We’d better hurry, the ceremony should be starting soon.”

*******************

Finally dressed, Inuyasha posed proudly as Miroku looked him over. The silver color of the hanyou’s long hair was made even more stunning by the black and white of his outfit. The monk had expected to have to argue with his friend over the footwear, but Inuyasha had surprised him by putting on the tabi socks and zori sandals(6) without a word. Knowing how much he hated having his feet covered, Miroku could only smirk and shake his head at the lengths the half-demon was willing to go to for Kagome. Especially since he had spent the better part of three years pretending to have no interest in the girl as anything more than a shard detector.

The door flung open and Shippou and Kohaku came into the room panting, eyes shining with excitement. Inuyasha eyes the two suspiciously as Souta calmly followed them in and got their cloths for the wedding out of his closet. All three outfits were identical to the one Miroku had donned for the occasion, and consisted of a pale purple haori and hakama, with a white hadagi underneath. Shippou had told the hanyou that Souta had chosen the style in his honor.

“Where have you two been? You disappeared after breakfast when you should have been getting dressed.” The boys were changing hurriedly knowing that time was running out.

“Now, Inuyasha, don’t be so hard on them. I’m sure they were just outside watching everyone arrive and got caught up in the festivities. Is that right, boys?” Miroku raised a questioning eyebrow at the two, who nodded quickly.

“Yeah, that’s right.”

“Uh-huh!”

“Keh,” Inuyasha snorted. “Just hurry up, alright? It’s almost time for the ceremony.” He missed the conspiratorial looks the three boys exchanged with Miroku as he left for the living room.

Mrs. Higurashi sat on the couch, speaking quietly with Jinenji. Both were dressed in their finest, faces glowing with excitement. Looking up, Kagome’s mother smiled at Inuyasha as he entered the room. “Inuyasha! I’m glad you’re ready. Jinenji has something he wants to give to you and Kagome.”

Jinenji stood and bowed formally to the groom, eyes twinkling, “Congratulations, Inuyasha-sama. Kagome is a wonderful woman. I trust that you will give her as much love as she gives you.”

Embarrassed, Inuyasha bowed back, grinning, “Keh.”

With a nod, Jinenji cleared his throat, “Mrs. Higurashi called me before she sent out the invitations. She asked, and I was honored to help with some of the formalities. Humans consider it bad luck to give gifts on the wedding day, but this is more of a necessity. I’ve had our youkai government contacts provide you with the appropriate papers you’ll need to exist in this time period.”

The doctor pulled an envelope from out of his kimono. “In here is all your documentation, identification, birth certificate a marriage license, stuff like that. When you’re ready to update the information, all you need to do is call me. I’ll handle the rest.”

Taking the envelope in hand, Inuyasha stared at it. “I don’t know what to say. This is….” Looking up at Jinenji and Kagome’s mother, his eyes were wide. “How did you do all of this? The clothing for all of us, the papers… how did you afford to do so much for us?”

Mrs. Higurashi smiled, “I’ve been putting money away for Kagome’s wedding and for college. It seems that she has a larger calling in life than school. I want the two of you to have a great start in your life together.”

Inuyasha was constantly surprised by this woman’s warmth. He’d been alone for centuries, and still hadn’t adjusted to the idea that he was wanted, that Kagome loved him, and that her family included him among their numbers. A slow grin spread across his face, “Thanks, Mrs. Higurashi. Thanks, Jinenji.”

“Please, call me Mama. You might as well.” Stepping forward, Kagome’s mother hugged Inuyasha tightly. “I just hope my grandchildren are as adorable as you are,” she added, laughing at his blush. “Open the envelope.”

Sliding a nail under the seal, Inuyasha lifted the flap and drew out the top paper. It was the marriage license, legally allowing him to marry Higurashi, Kagome. Inuyasha looked puzzled at his name written beside hers… Ichirei(7), Inuyasha.

“Ichirei?” He questioned.

Jinenji nodded, “Everyone has a last name in this time. You needed one too, so I created one for you. It means, ‘One Soul’. I thought it was fitting.”

Inuyasha stared at the name again, ‘Ichirei, Inuyasha… Ichirei, Kagome. One Soul.’ Jinenji was right… it did fit. Not only were they two parts of the Shikon no Tama, his soul belonged to her, and hers to him. The name wasn’t just fitting - it was perfect. Inuyasha nodded his approval, smiling widely.

“Why don’t you and the boys head up to the shrine? Jii-Chan is there already. I’ll show the papers to Kagome and we’ll meet you.” Mrs. Higurashi kissed Inuyasha’s cheek before heading to Souta’s room to gather the boys.

Jinenji placed a hand on Inuyasha’s shoulder, “You ready for this?”

“Definitely,” Inuyasha grinned.

“The two of you will live a full life. I can personally guarantee that.” Chuckling at the questioning look on his friend’s face, Jinenji shook his head, “I told you, I can’t answer that question. If I told you whether or not you’re still alive in this time, you might try to find yourself or worse, do something to influence the outcome and that could be disastrous. Trust me, you’re better off just waiting to find out for yourself.”

Sighing, Inuyasha nodded and, as Miroku and the others joined them, the group set off for the shrine.

******************

Kagome’s mother arrived just in time to help her put on the tsuno-kakushi(8). With the white hood attached to her kimono, the girl hardly recognized herself in the small mirror. The white make-up covering her face somehow gave her an unearthly beauty, and the deep red of her lipstick seemed to be the only thing holding her to this earth. Her blue eyes(9) shone brilliantly, floating in a sea of white.

Behind her, Sango smiled at her reflection, “Are you ready?” she asked the bride.

Kagome tried to speak, but could only nod. She stood and her mother put an arm around her. Together, the three women went downstairs and outside, starting up the hill to the main shrine.

The reception guests had gathered not too far away, filling the space between the mini shrine that contained the well, and the Goshinboku. Tents had been set up to shade the guests, and the tables beneath were already laden with food. A distance of fifty or sixty feet was all that separated them from the shrine, and Kagome could feel eyes on her as she approached.

“Wow, Mama… you really went all out!” Kagome’s stomach fluttered nervously, and she stopped herself from trying to count the number of people at the reception.

Mrs. Higurashi laughed quietly, “My daughter’s getting married… I think that’s a good enough excuse for a little extravagance.

Standing in front of the shrine were Jii-Chan, Souta, Miroku, Shippou, Kohaku… and Inuyasha. Instantly upon seeing the hanyou, all of Kagome’s nervousness vanished. Remembering Sango’s words from earlier, the bride focused her energy on the man before her… her lover, her mate. This was their day, and all of the people there had come to celebrate them.

Then, she was standing before him. Eyes never leaving Kagome’s face, Inuyasha reached down and took her hand in his. She was beautiful, like the goddess the villagers back home believed her to be. For the first time, the significance of this mortal ceremony washed over him. He was declaring to the human world, and their gods, that she was his alone… that they belonged to each other.

Together, they were each creating a place for the other in their worlds. Last night, Kagome had become his mate and had joined him in the solitary life he had built for himself. Today, Inuyasha would become her husband, and would finally find his place in the human world he’d never been fully comfortable in.

Smiling down at her, Inuyasha had never felt more confident of this, of her. Kagome had been right… not even five centuries had prevented them from finding one another.

Jii-Chan cleared his throat, “Are we ready?”

Kagome nodded, still gazing at Inuyasha. Resisting the urge to run her fingers through the silver mane that seemed to float around his head like a halo, she turned to her grandfather. The wedding party bowed their head in prayer, and Jii-chan solemnly purified them with a harai-gushi(10), granting them access to the sacred space. When he’d finished, the doors behind him were opened and cries of ‘Bonzai(11)!’ carried to them from the crowd under the tents.

Hand in hand, Inuyasha and Kagome stepped inside the temple, only to stop in shock after no more than five steps. At the head of the shrine was Kaede, who stood by to perform the miko duties during the ceremony.

“Kaede?” Kagome was surprised to see the woman as joy filled her. “How did you get here?”

“We brought her,” Shippou puffed out his chest proudly, indicating to himself and Kohaku, “it was our idea.”

“Miroku, Sango and I were in on it too. We were supposed to keep you busy so Kohaku and Shippou could go back and get them without you noticing.” Souta added, a large grin spreading from ear to ear at the happy expressions on Inuyasha and his sister’s faces.

“Them?” Inuyasha raised an eyebrow, looking around.

“Inuyasha-sama!”

“Ouch!” Inuyasha slapped his cheek, capturing the tiny flea youkai. “Myouga?”

Myouga bowed, “I’m honored to be here, Inuyasha-sama.”

Kagome looked confused, “I’m so glad you’re here, but I still don’t understand how you got through the well.”

Kaede smiled, “The boys felt that since Shippou is now part of the Shikon no Tama, he may have the ability to get through the well on his own. He and Kohaku came back for Myouga-sama and I, and we were happy to participate in the experiment.”

Shippou blushed proudly as Kagome hugged him. “Thank-you, Shippou.”

Inuyasha mussed his hair, “Good job, runt.”

Jii-Chan cleared his throat again, “I don’t mean to interrupt, but we have a wedding ceremony to perform.” Turning to Kaede, the old man reddened slightly as he bowed, indicating to the front of the shrine. “My lady?”

Kagome observed Kaede’s reaction to her grandfather’s interest with pleasure as the two led the way to the front of the shrine. Inuyasha nudged her, nodding his head in their direction and Kagome smiled at him. He’d picked up on it too.

Facing the couple, Jii-Chan waited for all of those in attendance to take their places before beginning. Tradition had the relatives of the bride and groom facing each other, to represent the union of the two families into one. On Kagome’s side stood her mom, her brother, Shippou and Kaede, who also stood up front in order to perform her Miko duties. On Inuyasha’s side stood Miroku, Sango, Kohaku, Kirara and Myouga.

The priest acknowledged Kaede and Myouga as the go-betweens, or nakoudo(12), for the couple. Their role as teachers to Kagome and Inuyasha made them the perfect choice to offer advice to the bride and groom when they needed it.

After cleansing the four corners of the shrine, Jii-Chan welcomed Inuyasha and his granddaughter, motioning for them to kneel on the rice paper at his feet. He began reciting the prayers to announce the marriage to the Kami and ask for their blessing upon it.

Inuyasha and Kagome read oaths to each other, solemnly pledging their faithfulness and obedience. Finally, the San-San-Kudo(13) began, and with their first of nine sips, the couple was officially man and wife.

Inuyasha filled with pride as he looked into Kagome’s eyes. They shone back at him with their violent blue tint, made even brighter by the tears that hung suspended in them. Rising with his new wife, Inuyasha glanced around at all of those present. Miroku and Sango were grinning at him, and the significance of them acting as his family filled the hanyou with an unfamiliar sense of community. On the other side stood Kagome’s family… and now his too. His mate had given him so much, and he was overwhelmed with emotions he’d never realized he was capable of feeling.

Jii-Chan stepped forward and kissed Kagome’s cheek, “You’re father would have been proud of you.” Eyes tearing in memory of his son(14), the old man stiffened his spine to regain his composure. “Now… the rings please.”

Souta reached inside his haori and produced two small jewelry boxes, which he handed to Inuyasha and Kagome. At the hanyou’s confused look, Souta grinned, “Our one modern addition to the ceremony.”

Kagome opened the box she’d been handed, finding a simple gold wedding band. “It’s beautiful,” she breathed. Lifting it out of the box, she took Inuyasha’s hand and slipped the ring onto his finger. “In my world, this symbolizes that we belong to each other.”

Smiling, Inuyasha took the smaller ring out of his box and gently placed it on Kagome’s hand. Suddenly not caring who was present, he pulled her against him and kissed her deeply, aware of no one else until Miroku started applauding.

******************

After the ceremony, Inuyasha and Kagome returned to the house with Miroku and Sango amid cheers from the partygoers. Throughout the remainder of the day, the bride and groom would need to change outfits two more times to symbolize good luck.(15)

Still in her white make-up, Kagome’s first uchikake kimono(16) was deep purple, made of silk brocade and embroidered with golden cranes. The ceremonial hood was removed and Sango helped her attach the matching purple headpiece to her hair.

Inuyasha’s second outfit was purple as well, and was in the same style as the clothing he wore every day. The familiar costume was more comfortable for him, although the fabric it was made from was much richer then he was used to.

As the group returned to the reception, Kagome and Inuyasha were instantly swept up by the welcoming frenzy of their guests. Led to the seats of honor at the head of one of the long tables, the newlyweds held court as each of the guests approached to offer their congratulations and blessings.

Miroku stood nearby with Sango, watching Inuyasha and Kagome. The monk had traveled with them from almost the beginning of the search for the Shikon no kakera(17). The first day they had met, he’d deduced that Inuyasha was in love with their beautiful companion, though they’d both denied it vociferously. He’d observed their behavior, and recognized the signs of growth in their feelings for one another as time had passed.

Ever the stubborn half-youkai, Inuyasha had been the last to admit that his feelings for Kagome went far deeper than the friendship he’d not only learned to trust, but rely on. It hadn’t been so long ago that Miroku had finally asked him outright if he loved the girl, and actually got as straight of an answer as Inuyasha was capable of giving.

That day at the woodpile, Miroku had realized how close his friend was to losing Kagome. Inuyasha’s determination to repay his debt to Kikyou was the lynchpin on which their relationship turned, and it wasn’t long after that something had changed in him. Miroku wasn’t sure what had happened, but the morning of the final battle with Naraku, Inuyasha and Kagome had returned to the group holding hands, and the hanyou had seemed at peace for the first time since the monk had known him.

Inuyasha had become a whole new person. He no longer shut himself off from the world, and his attitude had grown a little softer. Though he was still the same surly hanyou they all knew, Miroku could almost see that his soul had been changed by his love for Kagome.

Miroku watched as across the room, a gap in the line pressing in towards them allowed the couple a solitary moment in which Inuyasha took his wife’s hand. His smile was so uncommonly tender that Miroku had to grin to himself. The love of a good woman could solve most any problem.

“Inuyasha certainly looks pleased with himself.” Miroku whispered to his wife with a smile.

Sango nodded happily, “He should be… his mate is someone to be proud of.”
Miroku laughed, “You mean his wife….” Suddenly, he caught the full meaning of Sango’s words. “His mate?” he queried, incredulously.

Meeting his eyes, Sango repeated herself, “His mate.”

Looking back towards his friends, Miroku stared for a moment, before bursting into laughter. “When?” he managed to choke out.

Sango grinned, “Last night. Kagome’s spiritual energy drew her to him when he was in trouble. They defeated a creature together and then….” She trailed off as an amused understanding entered her husband’s eyes.

Miroku laughed even harder, “Looks like we’ll have to take turns after our battles,” he muttered suggestively.

Blushing, Sango hit him gently, “Hentai Houshi.”

Putting his arm around her, Miroku led her towards the banquet table. “I guess that means you own me money.”

“That was never an official bet, Miroku!”

“Ah-ah, no backing out of it now!” Miroku’s eyes twinkled as he continued to tease Sango throughout dinner.

******************

A momentary lull in the steady stream of guests gave Inuyasha his first chance to look around the pavilion that had been erected for the reception. From every cross-beam the supported the tent hung dozens of brightly colored paper cranes. Glancing down the row of tables, he realized that an origami bird sat in front of each place setting as well.

Turning to Kagome, Inuyasha lifted the sleeve of her kimono, brushing a finger over the golden cranes that appeared there too. “What are all the birds for?”

Kagome smiled brightly, “Cranes are traditional for weddings. They’re said to live for a thousand years, they mate for life, and they symbolize peace, happiness and eternal youth.”

Inuyasha started to grin in reply, but was cut off by something landing squarely in his lap.

“Inuyasha!” Shippou threw his arms around the hanyou’s neck before launching himself at Kagome.

“Hey, Shippou!” Kagome laughed as she caught the boy. She noticed that he had transformed himself so that his tail didn’t show. “Are you having fun with Souta, Hitomi(18) and Kohaku?” The three boys had become such good friends since meeting that she knew it would be hard for them to part.

The kitsune’s eyes shone brightly with excitement. “Uh-huh! I like your time, Kagome! Can we come here a lot?”

Inuyasha snorted with a wry grin, “What’s the matter? Our own home not good enough for ya?” Seeing the earnestness in Shippou’s face, the hanyou nodded, “I expect we’ll be back often enough.”

“Bonzai, Kagome, Inuyasha!” Eri shouted as she, Yuka and Ayumi came to greet them.

Kagome stood to hug her friends as Yuka looked her over, “I’ve never seen you look happier, Kagome! I’m sure glad you didn’t get sick today.”

Shippou laughed, “She wouldn’t have missed this day for anything!”

Ayumi crouched before the fox youkai. “Hey there! What’s your name?”

“I’m Shippou!” The three girls laughed in delight as the kitsune bowed formally.

“Aren’t you the cutest thing ever!” Eri cooed, “Are you a cousin of Inuyasha’s?”

“Nope. Kagome and Inuyasha are my parents!” Shippou announced proudly, not noticing the wide-eyed looks of surprise on his audiences faces.

Kagome felt as though her face had caught fire, “Shippou, why don’t you go catch up to Souta and Kohaku.” As the boy ran off with a wave, she tried to think of a plausible explanation for her friends.

“Kagome,” Yuka began in her usual concerned tone of voice.

“We adopted him,” Inuyasha explained calmly. “He lost his parents three years ago and since we’re the closest thing he’s had to a family since then....”

“Well, I think he’s adorable,” Ayumi asserted after a moment of silence.

“Did you see Houjou?” Eri asked, changing the subject.

“No... did he come?” Kagome asked, relieved to let it go.

“Yep! He’s right over... uh, actually, he’s headed this way!” Yuka commented with a nervous glance at Inuyasha, who remained impassive.

The school friends made swift their good-byes and were gone before Houjou had reached the couple.

“Bonzai, Higurashi... or, I guess it’s Ichirei now, isn’t it.” Houjou smiled as he extended a hand to Inuyasha. “Bonzai, Inuyasha. Make sure you take good care of Kagome... she get’s sick a lot.”

Inuyasha merely nodded as he eyed the former competition.

Kagome smiled, pretending she wasn’t uncomfortable, “Thank you for coming, Houjou. I’m glad you could make it.”

“Thank you for inviting me. I wish you both happiness in your new life.” Turning to walk away, Houjou looked back at the bride one last time, “You look beautiful, Kagome.”

The festivities wore on into the evening until finally, only one guest had not given blessings to the new couple.

Jinenji hugged Kagome tightly and shook Inuyasha’s hand before introducing them to his companion. “This is my mate, Kuri” Jinenji said with a blush.

Kuri was a full blooded horse youkai, with soft blue eyes and a thick mane of brown hair. She smiled gently and stepped forward, reaching out to hug the surprised bride. “Kagome. I have so very much to thank you and your mate for. It is because of you that my Jinenji had the courage to court me.”

“It’s true. Before you two came along, I would never have dared speak to a full youkai... especially one so beautiful.” Jinenji smiled as his mate kissed his cheek.

“How wonderful, Jinenji!” Kagome exclaimed happily.

“Way to go, Jinenji... I knew you’d turn out to be a decent hanyou.” Inuyasha grinned.

Jinenji’s blush deepened at the complement. “I wanted to introduce you... and to give you this.”

Kagome frowned as she accepted the envelope, “What is it?”

“Your honeymoon.” Kuri smiled. “ There’s an inn at the base of Mt. Hakusan that is famous for it’s hot springs. You’ll be spending a week there, starting tonight... all expenses paid.”

“Oh, we can’t!” Kagome protested, “It’s a lovely offer but we can’t accept such an extraordinary gift!”

“It isn’t a gift,” Jinenji corrected, “and it wasn’t our money that paid for it. The givers wished to remain anonymous for the time being, but you will learn their identity in time. This is repayment of a debt owed to you.”

Inuyasha looked at Kagome with a shrug, “I say we take it.”

Kagome bit her lip as stared at her mate before nodding, “All right, but as soon as we find out who it is, we may have to pay them back.”

Satisfied, Jinenji shook his head, “You’ll find that it won’t be necessary. A limo has been called to take you there. You should just have time to say your good-byes, change and pack before it gets here.”

Kagome hugged the couple, “Thank you for everything.”

Jinenji winked, “Thank you, Kagome. By the way, great job on that concealment spell.”

A quick word to Mrs. Higurashi and the announcement was made that the bride and groom were leaving on their honeymoon. As her mother tried to round up those closest to the couple, Kagome and Inuyasha ran back to the house to prepare for their trip.

Within half an hour their bags were packed, they had changed into their third and final outfit, and the couple reemerged to say farewell to their friends, who had gathered in the yard. Sango, Miroku and Kohaku promised to look after Shippou, who had tears in his eyes, and Souta promised to keep an eye on mom and Jii-Chan.

Mrs. Higurashi hugged her daughter and son-in-law as the limo honked from the drive below the house. “Take care of each other.” She instructed through a happy veil of tears. Hand in hand, Inuyasha and Kagome started down the hill, disappearing with the setting sun.

As the limo drove away, a couple stood within the shade of a nearby grove of trees. The two watched the small group of family members head back up to the reception before turning to leave in the direction of the forest.

“Do you regret it?” The woman asked softly.

The man smiled, “not once in five hundred years,” he said with a glance to his mate.

“That honeymoon was money well spent, don’t you think?” She grinned.

“I know I enjoyed it,” he replied. “When we get home we could recreate some of the better parts,” he suggested slyly.

Stopping, she turned her mate to her, wrapping him in a tender kiss, “I love you, Inuyasha.”

“Keh.”

Chapter Glossary:

NOTE: I realized that since I tried to explain all the terms used for Miroku and Sango’s wedding in the actual chapter, that I didn’t provide a real definition, so some of these words may look familiar!

1) Kuroseirei - Original name, created by me! Translation - kuro = dark, seirei = spirit

2)Bunkin-takashimada - A wrapped hair-style, almost like a bun, worn for shinto weddings.

3)Shiro-maku - Shiro means white and maku means pure. This is the name for the wedding dress.

4) Montsuki kimono - Consists of a short haori overcoat bearing the family crest with pleated hakama pants. The traditional outfit for the groom.

5) white body make-up, the little purse [hakoseko], small enclosed sword [kaiken], and the fan symbolizing a happy future - All of these things represent good luck, much like the ‘something old, something new...’ tradition in American ceremonies.

6) Tabi socks and Zori Sandals -

7) Ichirei - Damn I had a hard time coming up with a good last name for them! I went through dozens of variations before settling on this one. Ichi means one and rei means soul. I liked the concept for it! Incidentally, I took a test to find out what my anime name would be.... It came up as ‘Ichi’! Strange, ne?

8) Tsuno-Kakushi - This is the white wedding hood worn by brides. It reminds me of the thing Maid Marian wore in the Disney Robin Hood cartoon. The name literally means “to hide horns” and refers to the horns of jealousy towards the new mother-in-law, who is now considered head of the house-hold. It is worn during the ceremony to indicate that the bride will carry out her role as wife with patience and serenity. (Right......)

9) ... blue eyes... - Before anyone questions it, I wanted to explain in advance. In the original manga, Kagome’s eyes are a beautiful slate blue. In the Anime, the color was changed to brown for reasons unknown. I like the idea that Kagome is different, so I kept the blue.

10) Harai-gushi - A wand, usually a stick, with papers hanging from it, used in purification rituals to

11) Bonzai - Yes, this is the name of the little trees you can shape as they grow. It is also a Japanese version of the ‘Bronx cheer’. In the anime episode where Souta confesses his love to Hitomi, Inuyasha and Kagome shout ‘Bonzi’ for luck as they send him off. The final time he leaves, Jii-Chan and Mama get in on the act too!

12) Nakoudo - Traditionally, a kind of match-maker. They act as go-between’s for the couples family, and may actually do the proposing for the groom. There’s even an official ceremony for the first meeting to arrange the marriage. The nakoudo’s job is to answer any questions the bride or groom may have concerning life. Usually, a teacher or boss is chosen for the position, not a family member.

13) San-San-Kudo - The three x three sake ritual. The bride and groom take three small sips from three different sized sake cups. This is what officially unites the couple as husband and wife. In Shinto ceremonies, there is no exchange of rings, or a kiss to seal the pledge. (Okay, so I added that to my scene. I really wanted it! Can you blame me?)

14) ‘...memory of his son.’ - Most people believe that Jii-Chan is Mrs. Higurashi’s father. After all, she does call him ‘father’ in the first movie. However, I’ve thought about it, and maybe I’m wrong, but I think Jii-Chan is Kagome’s dad’s father. Reasoning: Jii-Chan is the shrine-keeper, indicating that he didn’t come to live with them after Mr. Higurashi died. Maybe they came to live with him! Also, they all have the same surname, Higurashi. This would be possible if Kagome’s dad were Jii-Chan’s son. Make sense? Either way, he’s the same old Jii-Chan!

15) Changing clothes three times - This ritual dates back to the 14th century that signifies that the couple is prepared to return to everyday life.

16) Uchikake Kimono - Originated in the Edo era and was mainly worn by court nobles. The kimono is made of silk and a silk brocade, in bright colors and patterns. They come in a variety of colors since bright patterns are only worn by unmarried women and this will be the last time she may wear them!

17) Shikon no Kakera - Japanese for Shikon shards. They use this term a lot in the manga.

18) Hitomi - Remember her? She’s the little cutie that Souta asks to be his girlfriend in the anime! Inuyasha and Kagome help him. I just had to put her in here.

A/N - Almost all of the characters in this chapter are brought to you by the genius of Rumiko Takahashi, and the letters A, R and U. I do not own the characters, they own me.

This is the LONGEST CHAPTER in the history of this story. 27 pages! Woot!

< a little man with a mop and push-bucket enters to clean up the massive quantity of fangirl drool>

Hooray for lemon! That’s all I have to say! I worked on this for weeks so I hope you all enjoy it! The lemon at the beginning of the chapter is 5 PAGES.

Okay, before I answer my reviews, I have a question to put before my readers.... I was in the shower tonight, plotting my one-shots, and an idea came to me and I decided that I wanted your opinion on it. I’m thinking of making Kohaku gay.... Don’t panic! I’m comfortable with the idea, but I realize many of my readers may not be. So I’m submitting this to a vote. Majority will rule, so if you are vehemently opposed to it, or for it, please let me know. Here are the terms. If you are against it, I respect your opinion, and I ask that you respect mine by not flaming me, or my story, as it’ll only piss me off. Plus, it’s not nice. Send ALL responses to my e-mail address: BrethlessM@aol.com . I only need a yes or no; no reasons are required. Thanks, and happy voting!

Okay, on to the reviews:

Vikki - You were first this time! Woo-hoo! Thanks for noticing I got the year right! You know me, anal retentive to the max! Very few people realize that since a) Inuyasha’s father died the night he was born, and b) Inuyasha’s father died two hundred years ago, that Inuyasha is two hundred in the series! My story takes place three years later, so therefore... 203! Hope you enjoy the lemony goodness, and the wedding! As for Sesshoumaru and Rin... you’re reading my mind, sister! Stay tuned for it!

Crossbow Trueshot - The ‘This Sesshoumaru’ thing is confusing, but it’s how he actually refers to himself in the manga! It indicates that he’s arrogant and thinks highly of himself. (Naraku and a lot of other villains do it too!) It could also be translated as “I, Sesshoumaru,” but somehow I like the other way better. I didn’t know about the weasel demon thing you mentioned. That’s interesting. Nice catch! I chose the name from a youkai website. It’s very cool! http://www.k2.dion.ne.jp/~youkai/myth/az_aljpn_en.html Thanks to them for the help! As far as the future references, I do use it more than once, but don’t worry. I’ve been very careful. There are a few references to it in this chapter and in the upcoming ones as well! I really tried to work it out before I did anything with that stuff so I could avoid the situation you described. Truthfully, there’s nothing that irritates me more than an unfinished fanfic. Mine is almost done! Finally, you caught me on the Beautiful Souls song. I had it in my head when I started writing this. I almost used it in the prom scene, until I realized that Inuyasha wouldn’t understand the English! Oh well, thanks!

Juice - Hope you liked the marking ;P. It’s official, Kouga will be in chapter 20! I’m working on 19 now, so he’s next! I hope Sesshoumaru wasn’t too out of character... I know he was nice, but I’m building up to this change in him... you’ll see.

Stuey - I know! Hooray for reviewers! I’m glad you liked Diane’s work! I’m so excited! I hear she’s working on the battle scene.... YEAH!!!! As for your question, the answer to that will be in chapter 20.... Heh, heh. Thanks for the editing help. Whenever you are able to look is great. I’m not going anywhere for a while. I am planning on starting a website of my own for my stories and Diane’s art work. What do you think? Any suggestions?

BakaInuGirl - Oh, I feel so loved!!! I’m so glad you loved how Inuyasha realizes his feelings for Kagome and Kikyou. I was so excited when I wrote that! I struggled with a couple ideas for it beforehand. I knew I wanted it to be special, before the final battle (where the bitc... I mean, Kikyou dies!) I’m sorry about the loss of Kagura.... It broke my heart when I read it! Wasn’t the stuff between her and Sesshoumaru SOOO touching though? OH! I’m so happy you liked my battle! It was the first picture I had in my head for the story! My new friend is illustrating the battle right now and I can’t wait! It was a very Secret of NIHM moment. Hooray for Disney freaks too! I’m one myself, so I know the feeling. After doing my virtual tour of DisneySea, I’m trying to convince my parents to go (so I can tag along, of course)! It’s so beautiful and if you haven’t gotten a chance to look at that website, you should! I posted it at the bottom of chapter 11. There will definitely be a sequel! I’m thinking about it now, so stay tuned! Glad that you’re excited too! Get some sleep, and keep enjoying!

PJ - I think Kagome’s friends are funny. They’re so irritating about the whole Inuyasha thing, I can’t believe Kagome puts up with it! I thought that part with them was funny! Thanks for the approval of the fight scene (more on that in another chapter ) and of the Sesshoumaru stuff. I love Sesshy too! Hope you love the lemon!

Diane - Wahoo! I’m so excited to see the battle scene! I’ll be waiting eagerly! I’m trying to pick up my writing speed, but I’m posting about two chapters a week. You’re all catching up though! I showed your Inuyasha pic to a friend and he’s really thrilled you’re illustrating for me. I’ll let you know when I get some kind of a website up. I’m trying to learn how! I’m definitely following through on the detail! Anything to inspire!

Final notes to EVERYONE! - Okay, to let everyone know, the story is looking more like 25ish chapters instead of 20. It may be a few less, but we’ll have to see! Lastly, Diane, the wonderful artist illustrating this story, has asked if I have any suggestions for her art. I told her to do whatever she was inspired by, but I thought it might be nice to see if you guys had any requests! If so, go ahead and post them, and I’ll pass them on. Of course, this doesn’t mean she’ll do them all, but if she needs some ideas, I’d love to see what sticks in your minds! Thanks again!

By special request, I haven’t forgotten!!! My next chapter will be posted on Wednesday! See you then!
