Confrontations
A/N: Wanted to comment on a review. I'm not sure how Misoa's name is suppose to be spelled. I've seen it spelled Misoa and Missao, so I'm not really sure. I've also seen Saito's spelled Saito and Saitou and Saitoh, haven't seen the actual manga spelling so not sure. But I'd like to thank those that have reviewed so far and thanks for being patient..
Chapter Fourteen
The streets were busy as the carraige rolled along, leaving Kagome time to have doubts. It would have been nice to have someone to talk to but Sano refused to sit inside with her. Why he'd prefer to sit on the roof was beyond her. The evening air was slightly cool, giving a slight chill. The miko sat inside examining her nails trying to find something to preoccupy her mind besides the current situation. She wanted to go back for two things; get this meeting over with and stop by the well. She knew she couldn't go home but being close to it would give her the smallest amount of comfort.
Somewhere on the other side of the ancient well her family waited for her return. What must they believe? Would they think she died in the final battle? If only there was a way for her to communicate with them. Instead she was stuck here unsure of the reason. Did this girl really need help? Shippou was suppose to look for her and anything helpful while she was away. The only thing she could do was pray and hope for the best.
A dog started barking as the carraige pulled to a stop in front of the large dojo. She gazed out the small window taking in the large structure. It was hard to believe this was the same place she'd run from not too long ago. The well was near, she was close to her means home. Should she try it and take the chance of it working, leaving Shippou all alone.
A second later the door was being opened, Sano standing there waiting for her to exit. He had a huge smile plastered across his face, someone was happy to be home. She stepped out of the carriage wanting nothing more than to jump back in the carriage and telling the driver to burn rubber.
A strong arm was thrown over her shoulders pulling her towards the lone man waiting for them near the entrance. She tried to smile up at Sano, the offer of comfort welcomed. She couldn't help be somewhat nervous about meeting a professional killer. 'Why the hell am I so stressed? I stood up against Naraku and I can't even imagine how many people and youkai he'd killed. This is just an ordinary man, nothing I can't handle. Take a deep breath Kagome, you'll do just fine.' She kicked herself for being so nervous about nothing.
The few seconds it took her to cross the lawn was enough for her to collect herself. She wouldn't be scared of this man or anyone in this era. None of them compared to the monster she'd faced not long ago. A couple of questions to ease his meddling and she'd soon be on her way. Time to do what was needed.
The closer she got, a better look it presented. There wasn't much light left, only the moon provided what outlined the small man. He was only a few inches taller than herself. His bright red hair was pulled back leaving some bangs to hang down. She had to admit he was very cute in a boyish kind of way. His body was extremely thin but looked to be in shape. He wasn't anything compared to Aoshi, who was tall and well built.
"I heard you wanted to speak to me." Kagome spoke before he could, getting straight to the point. Sano chuckled softly beside her finding something amusing in her tone. It was a little harsh, her annoyance at being summoned obvious in her voice. If the man noticed it he didn't let it show. A smile was her only reply and a quick nod.
"I wished to speak to you, that I did. Won't you come in and we can sit down. The night is getting cold and Miss Kaoru has a nice fire going inside, that she does." Kenshin looked the strange woman over. She was wearing traditional clothing of a miko, someone of the church. Seeing so made him want answers even more. Who would attack a woman of the cloth? What kind of trouble was she in? She was very pretty, the clothing accented her body instead of hiding what she had to offer a man. A blush crept up his cheeks realizing where his thoughts were straying.
Kenshin walked inside leaving both of them to follow. Sano entered behind him first, yelling seeing the food about to be served. "We were about to eat, please join us." He nodded to his wife, he wanted the girl to stay until they knew she was safe. Why had she ran out that day? He was told that she'd healed Saito also, was she also a doctor? "Let me make the introductions."
Kagome felt the false smile slip from her face and took a step back. The urge to bolt baring down on her shoulders, he was here. There was Kauro and the young boy that had found her that day. A baby was sleeping on a blanket, but what bothered her was him. He was sitting there glaring at her. Like she'd known he'd be here of all places. Was there no escaping him? Panic finally set in, Kenshin was going to question her no doubt. And right in front of Aoshi of all people.
Not caring of their reactions, she turned on her heels and began making her way back outside. She urged her feet to move faster, not wanting to run yet. She couldn't allow Kenshin to pry with him there. The carriage was already gone, no means of transportation was available. A scream almost pasted her lips when she was grabbed by the arm only to be swung around to face a worried Kenshin. "Release me now!"
"Why did you rush out. I only wish to help you, that I do." He frowned seeing the girl's eyes hastily seek out the ground. She was hiding something but what? She'd been okay until they walked inside, had she panicked for a reason? He'd heard enough from Sano to know that the girl was thought highly of and went out her way to help others. Someone had injured her, she was terrified of something. "I can help you but you will have to trust me."
Trust him!! He had to be insane to think she'd tell him anything. Kagome groaned in denial, wanting to scream at the heavens. There was nothing they could help her with. If she told them the truth they'd likely hand her over to Aoshi so he could finish the job. His eyes looked so sincere, what she wouldn't give to have some help. She could feel the others standing at the door watching the display in the yard. "Look I'm grateful for the offer but there is nothing you can do to help me. I have to handle this on my own."
"Can you? If you could handle it then explain why Yahiko found you covered in blood on the verge of death. Someone tried to kill you, that they did. Why would someone want to kill a miko? You need help, that you do." Kenshin saw her shoulders tense at his words. She didn't like being reminded of her near brush with death. Maybe being reminded would make her realize that she needed help.
Kagome felt her temper snap, the tension hitting it's breaking point. Once again someone was implying that she needed to be saved. She wasn't able to take care of herself, always needing to be saved. "Listen here Mr. Himura, don't you dare tell me I can't take care of myself. I spent years being hunted every waking minute by things far more dangerous than you. I managed to survive the most evil bastard ever to grace existence. Being stabbed in the chest is nothing I can't deal with. Especially when done so by a self-centered prick that would rather assume than ask a simple question. Never again will I rely on someone else to save me. If I die then that's my problem, not yours. I know who you are and I understand what you are capable of. But I did not get where I am today by using other's as a crutch. There is nothing or no one in this century that I can't handle." Deep down she knew part of it was a lie, she had used other's as a crutch for a long time. She couldn't count how many times Inuyasha had to save her. But she'd gotten stronger, she was worth something now. "I refuse to die in this era, I won't die until I get home."
Kagome almost slapped herself, knowing the probably didn't understand what the hell she was talking about. The looks she was recieving said enough, they thought she was off her rocker. Not that she gave a damn, she knew she wasn't crazy. "Look, I'm sorry, please I don't want to talk about it. I can deal with it on my own." She let her eyes roam over the people standing not far away listening to every word. Most of them looked confused and shocked at the outburst. Her heart sunk, Aoshi was looking at her with an expression she couldn't read.
"Very well, I will not question you again. Just answer me this, is there a chance this person might come for your life again?" Kenshin decided to let her have her space. She obviously needed time to deal with everything. She'd come to him when she felt more comfortable with them. Until then he'd let her see that they could be trusted.
Kagome wasn't sure how to answer that question. Was there a good chance that he'd try to kill her again. Yes, he could possibly try to if he remembered her suddenly. There was no way for her to go home now and everyday she was here she was taking a chance of them realizing who she was. What if they did before she was unable to uncover the truth and clear herself? They would try to kill her again. "Yes."
