Chapter Fourteen

“Me?” Jaken gawked, his eyes wide like he was just accused of a crime he didn’t commit.

“You,” she repeated, pointing at the short man. “You’re the babbling guy from the chat room.”

“What?!” He exclaimed.

“Wow,” she said staring at him while Jaken began explaining that he had no idea who she was.

He looked like what she thought he was. A short, nerdy, beady man with bolding hair, a pointy nose, with a slight hush in his back; who did the bidding of his master without doubt or question; who worshipped the ground his master walked on. The more he kept rambling on the surer she was he’s toad servant.

“Now, out this minute!” He finished, coming up to her.

“Uh? Hey!” Rin said as she was pushed out of the room. The cherry door shut in her face.

As she stood out in the hallway, three things went through her mind. She owed Sesshoumaru a thank you, two apologies, for the shirt and falling on him. He probably thinks I’m a clumsy idiot. She was going to give Jaken an eyeful for shoving her out the door, making stumbling on her injured ankle: it probably going to be stay mess up with how many times she tripped, stumbled, and fallen on it. Rin needed to get back to work.

During the next hour she uneventfully finished setting up the rest of the lunges. When she was finally able to get off her feet she sat in the kitchen watching girls coming in and out. Some of the male staff starting arriving signaling the party had one or two hours left officially. But technically it doesn’t end until the last person leaves, because according to Kai these are people you don’t kick out when times up.

“Finally,” said Kagome walking with an empty tray of food.

“What is it,” she asked wanting to know.

“Inuyasha finally recognized I’ve been serving him all night. He only noticed because I ran out of food.”

“You are wearing a mask remember,” Then she shrugged, “But that’s Inuyasha for you.”

“He follows his nose.” They laughed.

Suddenly the doors opened and guess who poked his head through, “Hey, Kagome hurry up with the food.”

Rin started to laugh harder; he walked in as if on cue.

“Rin is that you?” he noticed her, “Who else is here?”

“Hey your not suppose to be in here,” said a male staff handing Kagome another tray.

“Alright here’s food, out before I get in trouble,” said Kagome forcing Inuyasha to back away.

“Wait a minute Inuyasha,” Rin stood up from her seat, walking towards the door Kagome paused balancing the tray with both hands and Inuyasha’s hand froze already around a mini sandwich. “I lost my necklace over your house on New Years. Do you mind looking for it?” Before he could answer, Kei shouted again, “Hey, hey, hey, get out here Kagome.”

“Going, going, move it Inuyasha,” Kagome said Inuyasha him and her leave.

Rin went back to her seat not looking at Kei. He was probably streaming, thinking again she was trying ruin his business. But she wasn’t, honest.

Soon less food and drink had to be taken out to the floor, people were getting full.

Rin had nothing to do and she was glad for it her ankle was too. All she did was sitting talking to Kagome, Sango, Ayame and other staff as they came in and out the kitchen. The boss Kei even let her be probably because the guests were circulating more then the floor area now. With this being the only place she could be where she wouldn’t enter act with them.

“Oh my god,” said Ayame suddenly walking in her eyes wide and cheeks beat red.

“What’s up,” she asked.

“Rin!” Ayame came over to her, “I can’t believe what I saw, and you won’t believe it?”

“What is it?”

“Okay, okay,” Ayame paused taking a breath, “I mean its one thing to see it in a movie, but it in person. It’s totally different, scandalously even.”

Rin waited for her to calm down.

“Okay, so I had to use the bathroom, but the staff restroom wasn’t near where I was. And its not like boss man was gonna go checking bathrooms for staff using the wrong one. So I took a chance on the guest restroom. When I walked in,” Ayame paused.

If she kept the pausing up, Rin was going to shake her. The girl was building up to something and a storyteller doesn’t stop at the raising action.

“I heard a noise; I ignored it at first thinking another woman was in here too. I use the bathroom and heard another sound, a rustling like clothing moving against each other. Now the stalls face the sinks and mirrors. As I was washing my hands I heard a giggle, then a stall door open!” Ayame exhaled.

“And!” Rin said motioning for her to continue.

“There were two people having sex. The guy had the woman pinned on the wall her boob hanging out, his pants at his ankles. He was pumping-”

“Enough!” Rin put her hands over her ears, “No details please!”

“I haven’t even told you the worse part yet,” Ayame pulled her arms down, “I was standing there shocked when the guy sees me and he says, ‘Want to join in.’”

It was Rin’s turn to say, “Oh my god!”

“I know I was freaking out, I ran out of there as fast as I could. I’m going to be scarred for life,” Ayame exclaimed.

“What are you doing, Ayame?” Said Kei.

“Boss man, got to go,” said Ayame leaving.

“Rin!” Called Kei.

“Yes” She answered.

“Take out the garage,” he pointed to a pile of bags.

“Mm…mmm…” She groaned. Wasn’t this a male staff job? Sliding off her seat she made her way over to the pile, well at least they were near the back door. Grabbing two bags one in each hand she pushed the metal door open with her shoulder.

“Mmmmm…” She groaned again. The door is close, but the dumper was far. “This is punishment.”

It’s cold out here, she could see her breath come out like clouds of smoke and there’s dirty snow on the ground. The only good thing was the alley nicely lit so she could see where she was going. Rin wand up making four trips back and fore before completing her task, her arms were jelly when she made it back inside the warm building.

“Great you took a long time, go help Sango and Ayame in the coat room,” ordered Kei.

A two second rest to warm up and back to work, Rin signed taking her shivering self to the front. Last time she was going to let Sango talk her into working. Oh that’s right she agreed without getting the details. All right last time she was going to that again.

Sango, Ayame and her checked ticket numbers, retrieved expansive looking coats, and then returned them with fake smiles on their faces.

“Do we get tips from this,” Ayame asked while searching for a coat number.

“The guests can, but it’s rare, why?” Answered Sango.

“I’m trying to find something redeeming about agreeing to do this.”

“What happen?” Sango said concerned.

“Nothing I mess up a lot, but lucky for me boss man was busy with Rin that I didn’t get yelled at,” said Ayame finding the coat.

“Hey,” Rin said.

“Well it’s true, but when we start cleaning up my cover ups might be revealed.”

“Everyone gets there just deserts,” Rin commented.

“Well they are your mess ups, Ayame,” said Sango.

“I know but I’m hoping that boss man will think Rin did it.”

“What?” Rin said disbelief she had enough of her own trouble.

“Don’t worry Rin, if I get any tips I’ll spilt half with you,” Ayame smiled as if saying this will make it all be fine.

“Yeah right, take on your own respond-abilities,” Sango said.

“My thoughts exactly,” Rin said going up to the counter to attend to another guest. Suddenly her breath hitched in her throat standing at the counter was Naraku. It was too late to turn around she was only two steps away. And it will be rude to abruptly walk away, especially if he recognized her. Did he recognize her, she quickly wondered. Taking those shorts steps, he spied her as he slid the little paper across the counter. She took it wordlessly turning around going in the back.

“I’ve been scarred today, if boss man finds out about the other stuff knows what it’ll do to my mind.” Ayame said still shuffling through ticket numbers.

“What are you talking out” asked Sango. The girl was making no since at this point. She made her way up front handing a coat to a departing guest. Getting another ticket she came back to hear Ayame’s answer.

“I used the guest bathroom instead of the staff and I walked in on a couple humping like bunnies.”

“What?” Sango said in skepticism.

“Too much information,” Rin said looking for her own assigned coats.

“It’s true.” Ayame said finally finding the matching number. “In fact,” she peaked around the corner looking to the front, “There’s the guy.”

“What, I don’t believe you,” Sango whispered looking.

“The guy in the middle wearing black suit.”

For reason Rin found herself peaking as well, through she probably guessed who it was already. “I believe you.”

“See.” Said Ayame.

“You do?” Said Sango.

“That’s Naraku my mother’s boyfriend and all they do is… hump like bunnies.”

“Beat you can’t sleep at night,” Ayame giggled.

“Ayame,” Sango scolded.

“What it’s funny,” Ayame continued to laugh.

“Alright back to work.”

Ayame gave a small huff of protest, but did as told. The girls got back to work, however Rin lagged a little holding the three coats attached to the ticket. She wondered if she might ask one of them to do it for her, but decided not to. She could only hope the mask still on her face was enough to camouflage her identity. Going up to the counter she used the coats as an excuse lifting them up to her face she passed them over.

Okay almost there, just take them already. She couldn’t see his face. However saw arms rising to receive them. Through they didn’t take it, he grabbed her arms. Rin flinched at the contact and tried to pull away, but his grip held strong. He forced her arms down. Red eyes bore into hers, “If you hide Rin I will find you,” Naraku said his fingers digging into her arms. “There’s no where you can hide.”

“Don’t go far your mother will get worried,” Naraku departed with his coats in hand.

What did you he mean-?

“Hey, hey you awake in there!” Said a middle-aged man waving a ticket in her face.

“Oh sorry,” she said blinking her eyes, taking the ticket she put the moment out of her head.

But it wouldn’t stay out of her head. What did he mean? She was never planning on running away. As long as her mother was happy with the way things were, then she was also. But she didn’t know if that’s what Naraku meant; she almost certainly knew it wasn’t. So what did you he mean?

The question had her perplexed as she retrieved more coats.

“Okay the line is going down, Rin why don’t you take a break.” Sango.

“You sure?”

“Why her?” Ayame chimed in.

“Aren’t you waiting on that tip,” said Sango.

“That’s true.”

“Okay, I’m off thanks, Sango,” Rin said leaving the station.

She wanted to be somewhere, where she could think about what Naraku meant, and not run into Kai. Because he’ll put her right back to work, even if Sango said she could take a break. Deciding outside was the good choose she stood on the sidewalk in the midnight sky. There was a light snow falling, departing guests waited for the valet to drive up with there vehicles. Then Rin spotted him, Sesshoumaru, her heart leaped thinking this was it.

You know this is your last chance, her inner voice announced.

Thank you very much for the update she answered it.

Taking a deep breath of cold air into her nose she found her resolve. He noticed her approach, and she felt her heart picking up speed, stopping a couple of feet away from him.

Alright you have his attention now, don’t choke.

Rin vaguely thought to herself why was her inner voice so blunt, sarcastic, and mean.

“Um…” She started.

Oh and you still have mask on.

She gave a short gasp raising her eyebrows she feeling them brush against the material. Reaching up she pulled it from her face. A car rolled to a stop in front of him.

Hurry up and say something!

“I wanted to thank you for saving me from drowning on New Years. I never had a chance to and I didn’t want you to think I wasn’t grateful for my life. Cause I am! And I wanted to apology for slipping wine on your shirt and being clumsy and falling on you,” Rin bowed her head catching her breath.

Now you sound like the short servant, he got one already rambling on and on.

Shut up!

Raising her she continued, “I want to find a way to find some way to thank you. I don’t know what, but I want to.”

Time seem to tick buy at an odd motion. As she waited for him to say something, through he really didn’t have to. Cause he might be still upset about today’s events. She could have ruin some sort of business deal or something he was discussing. Or he felt that he was a higher form of life then she was and giving her an answer of any kind was beneath him. Or maybe he was the host of the party and she embarrassed him in front of his many guests, then Kei will be right in saying that if he decides to tell other clients that Kei have incompetent people working for him. Then Rin really owed Kei an apology and Sesshoumaru another one, because she didn’t really work here. It’s a day thing. She would have to try to convince him not to tell people to discredit Kei’s catering business. Cause it’s really good when she’s not working here, not like she’ll ever know, but she was sure it did better service. Or maybe he was surprise at knowing that she was the one helping with his accounting work. Cause according to Jaken, he runs a pretty big company. Or he was really just choosing to ignore her, either way Rin wanted to pay him back.

“Do as you like,” he said only.

“Kay!” She smiled.
