Consequences

Rin grimaced in pain.

Her eyes slowly opened, and she blinked several times.  It was dark. 

An awful, rotting smell assaulted her senses.  She blanched, covering her mouth, and tried her best to not vomit. 

With eyes now watering, she slowly stood but she was weak and her head hurt.  She tripped and fell onto something wet and squishy. 

As her eyes adjusted, her surroundings slowly came into view.  She was in …a cave?

Squinting through the darkness, she could make out brown walls. 

How did I get here?

She looked down and saw that what she was sitting on was nothing like she imagined.

She was sitting on corpses.  A mountain of corpses, her hands were pushing into rotting and congealed flesh.

Horrified, she stumbled to get away, unable to even scream.  She tripped and fell, but instead of sliding or even falling off the mountain of bodies she sunk into them.

Crying now, she frantically tried to get away from the corpses but it seemed that the more she struggled the more she sank.

Rin knew she was going to die here.  She had been abandoned by Lord Sesshomaru and then she had run off.  She ran away from her problems and straight into a nightmare.

A light appeared not far away, temporarily blinding her.

Rin blinked several times, and saw that it was an old man, wearing monks garb.  He was watching her solemnly.

‘Forgive me, child, but this is all in service to Lady Shiki.’

Rin stretched out her hand, ‘Help me!’

The monk shook his head, ‘Lady Shiki is most grateful to you.  She thanks you.’ 

Rin shook even more frantically. 

Several minutes passed, and she began to feel a slow burning, like fire, in her legs.

Terrified, she began to struggle even more, but she was tired and dizzy, and her headache was only worsening. 

‘I want to live,’ she sobbed.

The monk bowed his head, ‘You should save your strength, as it is useles.  For many days now I have been gathering beautiful young women together.  Lady Shiki was interred here, understand.  With each life she devours, she grows that much closer to re-entering this world anew.’

Rin looked around herself in abject horror.  There had to be hundreds of bodies here.  And…they had all once been living.  Girls, like herself.  ‘Y-you killed them,’ she whispered.

Rin was shaking now.  The burning in her leg had increased from discomfort to something like fire.  She hadn’t the energy to escape, and she felt like someone had lit a fire beneath her and it was slowly spreading.

Soon it would reach her knees….

‘It is awful, and I truly regret that it had to be you.  But I needed more and you were so close.  Lady Shiki will slowly melt away your flesh and then devour you.  Your skin will remain behind of course.’

Rin burst into tears.  The monk was turning to leave.  Taking the light with him.

‘Wait!’ She begged, ‘Wait, don’t go!’

Don’t leave me!

Thank you all for your support!  I hope to finish this story soon and start another Rin/Sesshomaru.  They are the only reason I was able to finish reading Inuyasha!  And I am happy that there are others who support this match!
