Scene 13
Scene 13 ------------------------------------------- Kaede's Village
* With the aide of Kouga's speed, it only takes half a day for him to carry Inuyasha on his back to the outskirts of the village. Inuyasha taps his shoulder as they grow near.
Inuyasha - Kouga, stop...
Kouga - What?
Inuyasha - I said stop here!!
* Kouga puts on the brakes with a hint of confusion. He lets the Inu climb down off his back as the tornado dies down. Said tornado, however, hasn't gone unnoticed from the village. The monk glances around after he stands from the steps of Kaede's hut. The slayer and the mikos are inside the hut with Shippo. Instead of disturbing them from their concerns for the kitsune, Miroku decides he'll just go and meet with Inuyasha before he comes into the village. Meanwhile, in the clearing where Kouga has come to a stop he watches Inuyasha move to stand in front of him and sniff briefly toward the village. When the hanyou senses nothing alarming he turns to look at Kouga. His eyes squarely meet Kouga's.
Inuyasha - Kouga,... I want... No, I need you to know that I-I understand what has happened...
Kouga - Here we go again... It was just...
Inuyasha - You helping me.
* Kouga falls silent and Inuyasha lowers his eyes a moment.
Inuyasha - We're both adults... We both know that the absence of a claim doesn't mean an absence of...
Kouga - If that has occured it won't be much of a problem... It's somewhat common for pups to be produced outside of a permanent mating bond. Besides, since I'm their leader they will see the reasoning behind having an heir without being tied down with a mate.
* After a short pause, Inuyasha lowers his eyes, swallows, then starts to turn away to head into the village. Miroku sees Kouga grasp Inuyasha's arm and pauses behind a large tree to wait.
Kouga - Mutt,... Inuyasha, I didn't mean that to sound so callous... If I learn anything of the matter I'll come to tell you right away...
* Inuyasha catches Miroku's scent then glances back at Kouga nodding.
Inuyasha - You should know, Kouga... I no longer see you as a rival... You should also know... that I can no longer keep you from... her...
Kouga - We shall see where our lives go from here... You can smell the monk, too, huh?
* Inuyasha nods as he looks back toward the direction of Miroku. Hearing this, the monk steps out from his hiding place.
Kouga - I must get back to my pack... Take good care of yours, hanyou.
* Inuyasha nods.
Inuyasha - Travel well, Lord Kouga.
* As Kouga turns and speeds off Inuyasha turns back to Miroku and keeps his ears down as he approaches him carefully. At first, Miroku is puzzled by Inuyasha's caution, but then he remembers why he left and sighs. The monk holds out his uncursed hand palm up in a welcoming gesture to Inuyasha.
Miroku - Welcome home, Inuyasha.
* The hanyou relaxes some and accepts the hand.
Miroku - We have all missed you.
Inuyasha - All...?
Miroku - Yes... Shippo told us how you protected him as best you could...
* Inuyasha bows his head and flattens his ears again.
Inuyasha - We... I was still unable to prevent...
Miroku - You still did your best.
Inuyasha - How is the little fox...?
* Miroku pauses until Inuyasha raises his eyes to meet his own.
Miroku - He made the decision to keep his kits... But he is not doing well, I'm afraid.
* Inuyasha raises his hands to grasp the monk's arms.
Inuyasha - Not...? Explain, please...
Miroku - Sister Kaede believes that he is pining for you. He remained quiet, withdrawing more each day. He would only leave her hut briefly to scan the village borders... He lays in her hut now, he slipped into a mild delirium yesterday after...
* Before Miroku can finish the words Inuyasha leaps off toward the village. The monk follows and catches up to him as he pauses outside of Kaede's hut.
Miroku - Do you wish me to go in and announce your return?
* Miroku hears Inuyasha whimper quietly as he raises his nose some to catch a scent. When the hanyou then nods Miroku moves around him and goes up into the hut. Having heard the muffled exchange outside Sango and the two mikos turn their eyes toward him anxiously.
Kagome - Please tell me that he's back...
Miroku - Yes. He is outside... (Quietly) He's nervous about how we'll...
* Before he can finish Sango and Kagome rush past him. Miroku listens to them greet Inuyasha excitedly as his eyes fall on Shippo. The kit tosses and mumbles some until Inuyasha comes up into the hut quietly. Miroku turns to catch Inuyasha's reaction when Shippo whimpers softly. He sees plainly how the sound rends the hanyou's heart. The older miko comes over to touch Inyasha's arm.
Kaede - (Quietly) Just go over to him... Touch him, stay beside him... He will know.
Miroku - Let's give them some privacy.
* Inuyasha turns to watch Kaede, Miroku, and Sango leave. He then meets Kagome's eyes but doesn't know what to say. Kagome sighs and raises a hand to touch Inuyasha's cheek. She is surprised to find it wet with tears that went unnoticed in the dimly lit hut.
Kagome - I still care about you both... Please, just help him out of this... whatever the problem might be... We all think it's because he misses you.
* Unable to speak because of the lump in his throat, Inuyasha nods. When he looks toward Shippo again Kagome leaves. Inuyasha slowly makes his way over to the futon. He can see now how the kit's body is trembling and falls down beside him when he tosses fitfully. He notices that one of Shippo's hands remains on his middle protectively. Inuyasha swallows to regain his voice then leans closer to the kit's pointed ear.
Inuyasha - Shippo,...
* As soon as he speaks Shippo sobs and turns his head toward him. Inuyasha moves one of his hands to lay gently on the kit's head.
Inuyasha - Shhh... I'm here now... Rest.
* Almost immediately the trembling stops and Shippo grows calmer, just as he had in the cave after the ordeal had taken place. Inuyasha now seems to fully realize why this takes place and sighs quietly to himself. 'Looks like it's you and me, now, kit', he admits to himself, 'We'll still need time to be sure of this, though. Will you consciously accept me after I've failed you so'? Inuyasha knows that only time will dictate their fate from here, but he stoicly resolves to accept whatever the kitsune's decision might be. Now that Shippo is quiet and still, resting more comfortably, Inuyasha lays down beside him and gently lays one of his hands on Shippo's hand that's laying on his stomach. The hanyou closes his eyes to concentrate and slowly a smile touches his lips briefly before he lets his own exhaustion take him.
