Finding Out Why
A/N: This goes for the Kimisan and Vivian account, I just started working again so have little time to write now. But I hope to add a chapter every morning on atleast one of my stories. Though they might not be very long, I hope to give you something.
Chapter Twelve
"So what do you plan on doing once we get to town?" Shippou interrupted the quiet morning walk, the question constantly nagging at the back of his mind. They would be back in Kyoto late this evening, the end of this journey. As much as he wanted Kagome to stay with him, he'd understand if she still wanted to go home. She had to miss her family terribly and there was nothing in this era for her. Inuyasha was gone, along with Miroku and Sango. With no friends and family here there was no reason to remain. He wouldn't ask her to stay for him, it would mean never seeing her family again. Not when it was possible for him to live till her era.
"I'm not sure Shippou. I was originally planning on trying the well once more." Kagome sighed when a spiked head turned around to briefly glance back at them. Aoshi and Sano were taking the lead, her and Shippou in the middle, the houshi trailing behind a good ways. It gave her and Shippou some privacy in which to chat. What unnerved her was that Sano kept glancing back to make sure she was still there but Aoshi had yet to acknowledge her existence since the other day. What the hell was she going to do once she got back? The only reason she could possibly think of to stay was Shippou. As much as she loved the fox, she missed her family. Her mind told her not to even stress herself over the reasons. It quickly pointed out that the well had brought her here for a reason. It was up to her to find out why and fast. There was a good chance she wouldn't be able to get back through until she accomplished what she'd been brought here to do.
Her mind went back to that evening she'd first come through. There had to be something there, an answer. "Shippou, I'm not sure what I'm going to do but I'll be honest with you about something. I don't think the well will let me through. You see when I left you three I fell short over a century or so. Anyways, I think it was between ten to fifteen years to these people. I think the well brought me here for a reason. The first time I think I failed which is why I was brought back to this time. I need to figure out why I am here first before I worry about going home."
"Well, tell me what happened when you first came through. Exactly everything that happened, maybe I can help you with this. It's the least I can do. Two heads are better than one." Shippou was glad to hear that she wasn't leaving right away. Maybe dealing with her loss would be easier after he'd spent sometime with her. It did sound like there was a reason for her to come through at this point in time. Did Kagome have another purpose? Whatever she needed he'd be more than willing to help her.
"Well, lets see. I came through and noticed the difference, then I heard talking. A man and a woman were together in the woods not far from the well. I watched while they seemed to be argueing over something. Seemed the man wanted to leave the woman behind which must have pissed her off because she then stabs him in the back. Oh yeah, before she left she made a threat then ran off. Then of course me being 'Oh-So-Lucky-Kagome' runs up to the guy trying to save him. Only to have his friends appear half a minute later to think I did it. It felt so good being chased down like a dog, then stabbed in the chest. As if my heart weren't broken enough by Inuyasha, I get staked in it as well." She took a deep breath only to look towards said man walking a goodways ahead of her now. It had been him to stake her, even if he didn't remember it. What the hell was she going to do? She hadn't been there more than thirty minutes. What could the well have wanted her to accomplish in that little bit of time? "I wasn't there long, what had I been suppose to do?"
"Maybe you weren't suppose to do anything Kagome. Have you ever considered you were just suppose to see? Think of this, what if you weren't sent to save that man but to see who killed him. You said so yourself she ran off before his friends came. No one would know who killed him. But since you chanced by you were able to see, to know of the guilty party. Then you were brought here for some reason." Shippou tried to think for a few seconds while Kagome did the same. "Okay, can you remember the threat she made?"
"Something about his brat being the first to fall under her blade. I think she called the brat a she, so I'm assuming the man had a female child. But thats all, nothing more was said after that. She ran off leaving me to take the blame." Kagome wished she could find that woman again. Plunge that sword in the proper culprit. "But if I was brought back to make sure she was caught for the crime then why was I brought back years later. Think about it, they think they got the right person. As far as they are concerned they got the woman that murdered him."
"If they hadn't tried to kill you, she still would have gotten away with it. So if you hadn't witnessed it then she'd gotten away with it either way. What about this kid, if she is still alive then she'd be in danger right. Lets go out on a limb here, lets say the girl is still alive, the killer hadn't gotten to her yet for some reason. No one would know of this threat because they weren't there, except you. Honestly seeing the woman brought to justice isn't really a good reason for the well to bring you back to this time. Maybe you weren't meant to save the man but his kid. You are here now, so we have to assume that she is still alive and in danger." Shippou stopped when Kagome did, waiting to hear her response. That made the most sense to him, bringing the woman to justice wouldn't bring the man back. So she had to be here to save someone. He didn't like hearing that she'd been injured when she'd only been trying to help someone. He'd like to know who it was that tried to kill the girl he loved as a friend and at one time like a mother.
She stopped in her tracks, what he said made sense. That only brought more questions and an even bigger problem for her. "I have no idea who the hell he was or who she was. How am I suppose to find informantion about someone that died over ten years ago. Not to mention the chaos during that time. My search would never end, it's giving me a headache just trying thinking about it. They didn't keep records back then or even now."
"True but surely if it happened near a town there will be talk, even after all this time. We can snoop around, see what dirt we can dig up. It's worth a try, what other lead is there? Not unless you can remember what one of his friends looked like. Maybe find one of them and I could question them or something." Shippou saw her face pale suddenly, "Are you okay? You wouldn't have to get near them. Even so they think you are dead and it's been too long. Humans don't have good memories."
Kagome felt her knees get weak, her stomach pitched to her feet. She forced her eyes to stay on Shippou and not to fly to the man still continueing to walk down the road. He was the only one she'd gotten a good look at and there was no way she was telling Shippou about him. The fox would go off the deep end and try to avenge her, didn't matter if she'd live. Then Aoshi would want to know why he was being attacked. How could they explain everything to him? Not to mention he'd have yet another reason to dislike her. She still wasn't sure on the first ones but why add fuel to the fire. Her luck he'd try to finish the job, fixing his mistake of not making sure she was dead. More problems she didn't need right now. "No, that's not an option. I didn't get a good look at any of them. We will have to find another way."
Aoshi heard Sano clear his throat, he turned to look at the man. His eyes followed the direction of Sano's gaze, the two had stopped suddenly in the middle of the road. The strange man had a hand on the girl's shoulder, her face was pale. What was being said couldn't be heard from this distance. It had to be important from the actions of their bodies. The girl was tense, reminding him of a rabit that had been cornered. Something the man had said was now making her shake her head vigorously in denial.
Putting on a stern look, he started to walk back towards them. He wanted to get back to Kyoto before nightfall, they were holding them up. The sooner he got away from her the better. By the time he got to them the houshi was upon them, the conversation stopped before he could hear. "What is the hold up? We don't have time to waste standing in the road. I have more important business waiting for me, get moving."
Kagome bristled hearing his voice, the nerve of him. She took a deep breath and tried to smile but felt like kicking him hard in the shin. "Well excuse us for wasting a minute of your precious time. No one told you to stop walking or asked you to come back here. Come on Shippou, lets keep moving before he has a coronary." The fox was fast on her heels as she stormed past thier escort. Now her ire was up pushing aside her fear and confusion. She had the urge to tell Shippou so they could double team him and kick his ass. What the hell was his problem, they'd only stopped for a minute. Not like he had to stop, they would have caught up eventually. He was being a complete dick for no reason.
This really wasn't her year, what had she done to deserve this? Would she ever get an answer to that question? First thing was to get back to town and have a nice bath and a good night sleep in a bed. Then she'd think about her upcoming search for a dead man's daughter. The idea of playing detective left a hollow feeling in the bottom of her stomach. What answers would she uncover? And was she prepared for them?
