Under the Cover of Snow

Disclaimer: Not my characters! I have no money, so don't sue me!

Newest Update: Sorry about the no spaces between the paragraphs thing, (as a fellow reader I know how annoying that is) and also sorry I haven't updated in like, a thousand years. I promise that I'm in the process, and I have about three other stories going on at the moment (and waaay too many more bouncing around in my head), so for all you who keep coming back - I thank you for your continued support, and very sorry about the lax. I promise to update soon! Pinky swear, even!

They ran. Miroku had him grasped under one shoulder while Kagome had him under the other. Sango was close behind, making sure that none of the smaller ones were following the trail of blood that spilled down the broken form of their hanyou friend. Tetsuaiga dangled limply in the arm slung across Kogome’s shoulder and occasionally a low moan could be heard from Inuyasha when they jostled him too much.

“It can’t be much further!” Miroku called over his shoulder, casting a quick, worried glance at Sango’s lithe figure in the distance, only just making out the triangular shape of her un-slung weapon. He noted the thinning trees and hope flared briefly and he meant to give Kagome a reassuring look, which faded at the look of concentration on her face. “What—?”

“I can sense a shard up ahead. . .it must have gotten ahead of us somehow,” she whispered, and sure enough, as they neared their destination, the foul stench of burning pitch reached them at about the same time as the screams. Sango caught up to them a moment later as they came to a stop in the clearing and surveyed the scene unfolding in the village below.

Fire and thick, black smoke billowed from several of the wooden structures, and people scattered in all directions, some trying desperately to put out the flames and others simply panicking and running amok and adding to the mayhem. And then they spotted it. The demonic figure rising above the houses with a squirming figure clutched tightly in it’s hands, while its maniacal laughter rang loudly.

“We have to help them!” Sango cried before dashing down the hill and flinging her weapon at the unsuspecting demon.

“Sango!” Miroku yelled after her departing figure. Quickly he turned to Kagome. “Stay and tend to him, I think we can handle this thing.” He helped set Inuyasha down, then rushed after the demon-slayer.

Kagome watched him disappear, and feeling helpless she began binding up the dog-demon’s wounds as best she could. Satisfied with her handiwork, she scooted him as close as she could to a tree and leaned him against it, in what she hoped was a comfortable position. She un-slung her yellow backpack and rummaged around inside for her binoculars. Hunching down on the hill’s overhang, she put them to her eyes and began scanning the wreckage below for her friends. The demon had disappeared, along with her two friends, with only the destruction the creature had caused to show it was even still there. Bodies littered the area–several of them—though whether they were alive or otherwise she could not tell. Then she spotted it; bobbing in and around the wooden structures, the demon plucked a man from the ground and was proceeding to devour him when Sango’s trademark flashed by, slicing the creature’s arm off at the elbow. It roared in pain and annoyance, and whirled to find its attacker, swinging its wickedly spiked tail in an arch and catching the young girl by the leg as she attempted to dodge, throwing her several feet. She landing heavily against a building, where she remained motionless. Miroku was nowhere to be found.

“Sango!” Kagome yelled, panicking. She leapt to her feet and dashed down the embankment, pulling an arrow from the quiver at her back and readying her bow for when she got within range. The demon, grinning stupidly, was bending over Sango’s unconscious form and so did not sense the arrow speeding towards it, but felt all-too-late as the power-infused weapon pierced its backside. “Get away from my friend, you disgusting monster!”

The demon roared in even greater pain as it scratched at the arrow, trying in vain to dislodge it. Its eyes flashed red, and its tail found the arrow and snapped it off. Growling, it slowly turned to face its new opponent, who already had another arrow pointed at it. It lunged at her. She released the next arrow which caught in its shoulder, and she just barely managed to dive out of the way as it lashed its remaining clawed arm at her.

She rolled sideways and was on her feet in a flash, reaching for another arrow, but to her horror, found that her quiver had been lost. Dumbly, she stood facing the demon as it stared down at her with hungry, red eyes.

“. . .In-Inuyasha. . .” she whispered as she slowly began backing away. Her feet bumped into something hard and, off-balance, she fell over it. It was Sango—breathing, but unconscious. Cursing herself for being so helpless, she could only watch as the demon crept closer.
