SUMMARY: For the first time, Sesshoumaru returns to his father only to find the castle empty, and when he returns, something has changed him... Something named Izayoi. ("Teen" Sesshoumaru)

NOTES: 1) Technically, Sesshoumaru is still supposed to be a "teen" in the series (profile book calls him 19 human years), but this is more like 15 human years old. 2) This is the (presumably final) sequel to the rest of the "Home" series, but stands on its own, as they all do. 3) This was requested by FireMiko-KagomeChan ( http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1547605/ ), and I was only too happy to get around to writing this part of the story. And I did promise I would actually finish this story, despite the fact that it looks like it has chapters. ;)

Chapter 1

When Sesshoumaru realized the cloud castle was empty, self-disgust faded into the background of his awareness. Apprehension replaced it as his dominant emotion, a tight gripping fist around his heart that made it progressively harder to breathe as the feeling of wrongness grew.

He didn't know what fear felt like and he wouldn't have admitted to it even in the privacy of his mind if he had, but the constricting feeling as he stood in the empty bedroom and looked at the neatly bare mattress refused to ease no matter how long he stared, trying to accept it. Alarm had heightened his senses, and the stale scents painted a picture he didn't want to see: his father had not been here for weeks.

It had been weeks since Sesshoumaru was last here as well. Nearly a full moon had passed in the human world while he tried to keep himself away. It was the longest he had ever managed to avoid sacrificing his freedom for the prison he needed... but he had not enjoyed his freedom. He never truly did. Instead of growing easier to bear the longer he kept himself from his father's touch, the need only grew stronger and more insistent, and in the end he had given in, as he always did...

But this was the first time his father had not been waiting for him when he returned.

This was the first time he had ever truly not known where his father was. Never in the centuries since he had met him, nearly all of the life he remembered, had he simply disappeared. The castle had never felt so large, and empty.

He forced his eyes away from the empty bed, turning his back on the room through sheer willpower. Staring at it would not make his father reappear, nor give him any answers.

It was not the first time he had been unsettled by suddenly finding himself alone. Vague memories, more feelings than facts, rose unbidden in his mind as he walked away - the legacy of his flighty mother, whom he really only remembered through his father's descriptions. The word "abandoned" came to mind, and he crushed it.

Icy wind whipped his hair as he stepped into the courtyard overlooking the gently rolling clouds, pulling on his fur as though to take it. The wind cleared his mind somewhat; he had thought of maybe tracking him, finding his trail and eventually following it to where he had gone, but he discarded the idea now. The clouds that held the castle had drifted as any other clouds would, and he would have to find the place where he had reached the human world before he could find the trail; that was assuming he had even gone to the human world. Even if he trailed him, that did not mean he would not miss him, and he did not want his father to return and find him not here.

He would wait.

He faced the east and the growing darkness for a moment, sprinkled with the first bright stars, and then made himself step back inside.

Although he had been resting only sporadically for the last moon, Sesshoumaru slept very poorly. He had never tried to sleep in his father's room without him before and he woke constantly, expecting a warm touch or claws running through his hair, only to be faced by the stale scent and the empty space beside him. He might have slept better in his own room, where he would have no such expectations at least, but it was not his normal sleeping place and he couldn't face a night without even the old scent of his father and the hope that he would wake and find him.

Dawn was barely breaking when he woke again from a restless dream and finally gave up on sleep. He rose and paced, unable to choose a position or a room or a more productive course of action; he could only prowl the home that now felt more like a prison than ever, and wait.

Was this how it was for his father when he disappeared? He had always pictured him as he usually found him: waiting by the bed for him to return, patient, unruffled... It had never occurred to him that it would be hard for him. Surely his father wouldn't be impatient, or ever have any doubt that he would return to him...

If that were true, though, why had he left? Sesshoumaru realized that he was assuming his father had gone to look for him, but the unpleasant possibility occurred to him that in fact he hadn't. Maybe he had simply gotten bored and gone to entertain himself... or somehow been called away...

Either way, it gave him unpleasant realizations. If his father weren't out looking for him, did it mean he didn't care? Or that he was simply so confident in his hold over him that he didn't even have to wait? Something in him rebelled at the callous indifference of the first thought, and the arrogant assumptions of the second. He would not give in so easily. The simple fact of having such expectations made of him encouraged him to leave again and not look back.

But the other thought stayed him. If his father were out looking for him, he cared, and he was worried, either for his safety or of losing him. Because he owned him, and would not let him go? Or because he wanted him?

The more unpleasant realization was about himself: he wanted him to be searching for him. He wanted him to come home and be grateful to find him here. He wanted to think his father was worried, even if it were a thing he would never say. He had his father's love and devotion and yet he wanted his attention...

Sesshoumaru was not used to questioning his own motives. He rarely second-guessed anything he did or felt, and the inner turmoil made him uneasy and irritated; he prowled to try to escape it, and it did him no good.

He was outside, considering yet again if he should try to follow his father's trail, when a scent in the changing wind took the choice away from him. His father was coming.

He was standing rooted to the spot, feeling a sudden inner peace erase the turmoil, as the clouds in the distance broiled and reluctantly parted. The swirls of white fur were at first indistinguishable from them, and the mist fell from the great canine body slowly, clinging and draping. The sun caught the water trapped in his fur as he surged into his domain, and small rainbows flickered around him for a few brief seconds. Then he simply shone.

The massive dog dwarfed Sesshoumaru long before he arrived; by the time his light leaps brought him to the courtyard of his home, he could have reached up and touched the top of his paw, but only barely. The sharp claws sinking into the cloud-stone each probably weighed as much as he did.

His father alighted near enough for him to touch, barely avoiding stepping on him in fact, but he didn't reach out. The magnificence stunned him. His own true form would have barely reached his father's knee, and it reminded him again how much older, and how much more powerful, his father was. Dwarfed beside him, it was impossible to consider ever being his equal.

"Father," he said quietly, looking up at him.

The great dog head turned toward the sound of his voice and their eyes met briefly; he had the disconcerting impression his father hadn't realized he was there. Then the powerful form began to melt and shift away, raining icy cloudwater on them both as the fur that held it trapped shrank and disappeared. When his father's more human form stood before him, he still glistened in the sunlight. The vision was beautiful and unearthly.

"Sesshoumaru." He walked calmly toward the great doors.

Sesshoumaru didn't respond outwardly, but his stomach clenched, the inner peace driven away as suddenly as it had returned. Something was different. There was no 'my' before his name. There were no touches or kisses. There was no sign that his absence had even been noticed this time.

He wanted to flee to the humans' world again. If he were not going to be missed he shouldn't be here at all, if his father was not going to want him to stay then he was free to escape... But he could not. Instead he helplessly turned and followed in his father's footsteps, trailing him inside. His eyes were frozen on the broad shoulders and the swinging hair, yearning without any conscious thought.

When they reached the bedroom, something he saw or smelled made his father pause for a moment, and he looked back as though seeing Sesshoumaru there for the first time. Something was distracting his father and it made him uneasy, and although he wouldn't presume to ask what it was he wanted it gone. This subtle change distressed him - everything needed to resume its normal routine.

"You returned last night," the great one observed with his small self-possessed smile.

"Yes," he agreed. Their eyes met and he had to physically keep himself back. The power behind the gaze drew him - he needed him. He never wanted them to be apart again, and the thought of running from him now made his stomach churn.

His father didn't speak, but there was a subtle shifting in his pose, a tilt to his head that was like an invitation. His willpower crumbled, and he took a small step forward, his eyes turned down in the closest he would come to an admission that he had been wrong, not reaching out but seeking the touch that had never been denied him.

An interminable moment passed before he felt a hand on his hair, and the tenseness flowed out of him. He pressed into the touch and raised his eyes, then took the unaccustomed initiative and pressed forward for a kiss. It was hungry and even needy, and showed his desperation more clearly than he would have wanted, but he couldn't control himself. And his father responded to him, which made everything better...

He would have gone on, and could have simply kissed him for hours if that were all he could have, but his father pulled back, running relaxing, enticing fingers through his hair. "You have been lonely," he observed.

He didn't answer, because it was true. Leaning into the petting, he watched him intently. The smell of humans was stronger on him than he was accustomed to, like he had spent time among them rather than passing them by, but it didn't turn him away; it encouraged him to replace the scent with his own, as it should be.

"Very well then," his father said, as though speaking to himself, and drew him forward to kiss him again.

This time it was not ended prematurely, and he drank his fill of his father's taste, and his passion. His hands were running over the broad chest, trying to find a way to become even closer to him. If only they could occupy the same skin...

He was guided down, and for a moment as the mattress pressed into his back the unusual position disconcerted him - he was almost without fail in his father's lap when they joined - but he was distracted when the false silk beneath his hands faded away into warm bare skin. His own body responded in kind, and they were pressed together, the warm weight of his father on him oddly comforting.

They moved faster than normal; for the first time he could remember his father's eagerness evidently matched his own hidden feelings. A hot mouth explored his cheeks, and he knew the tongue was tracing the lines of his markings - when it reached the sensitive moon on his forehead he shuddered with waves of sudden need, clinging to the powerful shoulders above him.

"Father..." he panted, feeling a whine building in his throat.

A clawed finger laid over his lips, followed by a light kiss. "I know."

His legs were shifted, and he let himself be moved, occupying himself by taking another deep kiss from willing lips. He had been drowning in solitude, dying for this touch and this kiss, and he hadn't realized just how much until now. He was a fool, he would sooner survive without air than without this...

He felt a brief pressure, then his father was there inside him. He gave a gasp at the sudden entrance and the moment of not-quite-painful discomfort - it was more than made up for by the fullness, the connection to his father. The completion.

There was a moment of adjustment for them both, then he pressed deeper into him with smooth thrusts. It was an all but new experience; he was used to controlling the penetration and the pleasure he received, and new he could only hold onto him and accept what his father gave him. He didn't mind; what his father gave him was nothing less than what he wanted, and needed. He found himself holding the strong arms that held his father up with one leg wrapped around his waist, trying to pull him further inside of him. Despite how deeply within him he was buried, there was more of him - he wanted all there was.

Another thrust pressed the knot against him, already too swollen with his father's excitement to fit easily inside of him. He tried to relax, pressing up against his increasingly insistent thrusts, but he couldn't stop the frustrated whine when it still wouldn't fit.

Then a particularly forceful thrust breached his walls and he let out a breath that was nearly a cry as it lodged within him. That hurt him, as it rarely did - and yet it felt so good. They were locked together, inseparable, and though his father still obviously felt the urge to thrust into him and he still greedily wanted more of him, neither of them could have moved if their lives depended on it.

His breath caught as his father let out a satisfied growl above him; with a final ineffectual thrust the long climax began. He could feel it filling him, and he panted, clinging to him and struggling to control his own rising pleasure - he wanted to feel it and savor it for as long as possible, after making himself go so long without. Soon he could contain it no longer, though, and he uttered a sharp cry as it overwhelmed him.

When he was next conscious of anything but the pleasure, they were on their sides in a warm tangle of limbs and furs, and his father was either asleep or nearly there. He shifted to wrap his legs lightly around his father's waist, bringing them closer together, and felt with satisfaction that they were still locked tightly together. A half-formed hope that it would last until morning crossed his mind as he naturally sought the calm heartbeat.

There were times when he would regret this and run in the middle of the night for freedom; now, even if it were not physically impossible, he wouldn't have considered it. He was too full, too sated, too complete to consider it. Freedom was an illusion; this was what he wanted.

They were still firmly tied to each other when he drifted into a deep and dreamless sleep.

It was Sesshoumaru who woke alone in the morning.
