What One Does For Love
What One Does For Love…
He’d fucked up.
For the millionth time,
he’d fucked up.
He stood helplessly as
the woman he loved
strode right out his
front door.
As he watched her leave
everything that had ever mattered
to him shattered before his
very eyes.
Including his sanity.
Slowly, days turned to weeks
and weeks turned to months.
and the tainted blood of his father
coursed more strongly through his veins each day.
And the blood that had lain
dormant for so long,
woke.
The neighbour called the police.
Claimed that the man next door was
Screaming.
Things were being broken.
Two cops responded.
Amidst the broken glass and
shredded furniture sat the man
who’s life was shattered.
Crouching in the broken glass
and bleeding, he clung to the photo
of the only woman
who’d ever mattered.
She’d kept him from giving in,
in to that demonic side.
His father’s side.
She’d been his very salvation,
his life.
But now she was gone.
Just as his sanity.
The police tried to approach him,
calm him down.
Yet it wasn’t them he saw.
But vile creatures untamed
and vicious.
So he lashed out.
Intent on destroying the creatures
that threatened to take from him what
was already gone.
Her.
And for what felt like hours later,
He sat amongst the rubble and
Bodies,
bloodied and torn .
His hands covered with that blood,
Blood that was surly not his.
He could swear he heard her voice.
She was saying his name.
Calling to him.
But he’d heard it before. Heard
her before, yet every time he opened
His eyes, she was gone again.
Yet even still, every time it happened,
he wanted to open them anyway.
Just in case.
So in order to try and sooth
his tormented soul, he did just that.
opened his eyes.
And something impossible happened.
She didn’t disappear.
There she stood. In the middle of all
the blood and ruins.
Her eyes wide and disbelieving.
At the sight of her
his mind
seemed clear.
God, what had he done?
He stood, and somewhat dazed,
he went to her.
She didn’t move.
Didn’t flinch.
She stood there, as if taking
him in for the very first time.
Slowly, he traced his
fingers over her jaw.
But the look in her eyes had
him snapping back, realizing his mistake.
Instantly he was begging her, telling her
He was so sorry.
It had all been a mistake.
He hadn’t meant for
any of it to happen.
He needed her.
He loved her.
She swallowed hard.
And to his surprise,
she nodded.
Then she did something he’d never
Thought she’d do again.
Not after what she’d seen him do.
She kissed him.
She told him none of it mattered.
She was sorry too.
She still loved him.
He could swear he felt it,
the insanity, the bitter wildness that had
completely consumed his soul
simply vanished.
Just like that.
As if it had never even surfaced.
She took his hands.
“Go upstairs and wash. We’re leaving.”
How could she be so strong?
So fearless when he was still shaking
with shock and disgust.
God, he loved her.
Loved her for everything she was.
He leaned down,
Kissed her lightly, and headed
up the stairs.
He never dared ask questions.
Afraid he was still imagining it.
That she wasn’t really there
at all.
She stood staring at the stairway.
She couldn’t help but wonder,
how could she still love a man, while knowing
he had killed.
That he had lost his mind,
surrendered to the beast inside him.
After a moment she came to realize something.
She didn’t care.
She loved him anyway.
“Miss…”
She nearly leapt out of her skin,
Whirling, she came face to face with one
of the fallen cops.
He was bleeding.
It looked fatal enough.
Why was he still alive?
He came closer.
Close enough to grab hold of her pant leg
and whisper.
“I need to get to my car… If you can try and keep him busy…
I’ll call for back up…it looks like he trusts you,
I’ll try and be quick”
She didn’t think.
Just acted on instinct.
Knew what had to be done.
Reaching for his holster,
she gripped his weapon,
yanked it free,
and fired twice.
“I’m sorry…But I can’t let you do that” she whispered as his
body slumped lifelessly to the floor
before her feet.
She heard the tap turn off,
heard his feet rush down the stairs,
and felt his arms wrap round her
from behind.
She didn’t move.
Couldn’t.
So she simply stood there,
leaning against him.
Contemplating the fact that she’d just killed a man
but felt no guilt,
no shame,
no regret…
What did that make her?
A monster?
“Why?”
She heard her lover’s whisper.
And the answer left her lips before her
brain could even process it .
“Because I love you…He was going to call for backup.
You killed a cop, for that they would’ve killed you on sight…
I had to…”
They’d want her dead now as well.
They both knew it.
But it didn’t matter.
They’d run away together.
Never loose the other.
And so they did.
And now they lay together in the ground.
Without even so much as a stone to mark the grave.
Forever in each other’s arms.
Each killed fighting for the other’s life.
A happy ending?
Or a useless fight against the inevitable?
You Decide.
