The Skaters Edge
Chapter 1 Friday Night
“Kag’s, hurry up! We are going to be late” my incensed best friend yells as I apply the last of my eye liner and mascara. I double check myself in the floor length mirror in Sango’s room. As I peer at myself, I can’t help but smile. The years of skating have made my body lean, but I still have all the curves that any other girl would die for. Perfect hourglass shape with a beautiful set of C cups. My black body suit in place; I grab my belt and put it through the loops on my snug Guess jeans. I grab my Doc Martins and take one final glance. I grab my flat iron to tame the last of my normally wavy raven hair to make sure it is straight as can be. With a kiss to myself in the mirror, I run down the stairs with shoes in hand. It has been a weekly routine for the last 6 years. This is Friday night.
Sango is waiting impatiently for me as I descend the steps 2 at a time. Sango and I have always been best friends, I mean at least since the 6th grade but it may as well have been forever. We met when she thought she could take a seat next to me and start copying off of my science homework. She was sorely mistaken though as she felt the after effects of my hard slap to the back of her head as she tried to lean over and take a peek. I remember vividly the look of utter surprise on her face and then the not so subtle outburst of laughter she gave. It was contagious and we ended up laughing riotously. The teacher ended up giving us both 2 weeks detention. After getting to know her I was completely expecting retribution of some kind, due to her obviously violent tendencies. I was pleasantly surprised that I had instead found the best friend a girl could ask for.
As I hit the landing at the bottom of the steps, I see Sango glaring at me. It is the same every week, me always late and her always waiting on me. She has a thing about being on time, especially this night. After free skate tonight, is the Skaters Edge try outs for the human speed team, The Rockets. She and I have been racing intramural for the last 3 years but this is a chance to go pro now that we are both old enough. Sango is already 18 but she was waiting on me to be of age as well so we could do it together since I am the only good competition for her. We are #1 and #2 respectively, depends on which night though. I think tonight is going to be her night and I am totally more than willing to hand over the spotlight to her since this is something that I know her parents always knew was her dream.
Looking back….
Sango’s parents passed away just 2 short years ago in an incident that Sango, to this day, blames on herself. We were at a race in Kyushu and Sango ended up hurting her wrist. She had driven that night and I didn’t have anything other than my learners permit so I couldn’t drive us. My Mom and Jii Chan were at one of Souta’s soccer meets in Kyoto so Sango called upon her Mom and Dad to come and get us. As we stood and waited in the blistering heat of our Japan’s summer sun, Sango’s cell phone rang.
She gingerly reaches into her bag to grab her cell as the tune No Rain blares from the tiny object.
“Hello?” she didn’t recognize the number.
“Is this Sango Tamaka?” the man on the other line says evenly.
“Yes, who is this and how did you get this number? Only my parents and…”her eyes widen in shock. Just standing next to her with curiosity written all over my face, I see her turn white and drop the phone to the ground.
I watch as Sango sinks to her knees on the ground, taking her head in her hands. I snatch the phone off the ground, “Who in the HELL is this!? How did you get this number!? I don’t know who you are but when I find out what you have done to my best friend, you are going to wish you were dead!!!” I screamed into the phone not bothering to listen.
“My name is Detective Kishi from the Kyushu Police Department. Who am I speaking to?”
“My name is Kagome Higurashi. Why are you calling Sango?” The fact that the detective called Sango did not go unobserved by me but I thought I would give the man a chance to explain. I was always getting myself into trouble by jumping to conclusions and it was just recently that I was learning the error of my ways. My temper is that of legends, according to my friends and family. I just consider myself fiery.
“This is the last number listed in the phone of Mia Tamaka. I am sorry Kagome, but there has been a terrible incident and Mira and Karmei Tamaka were found dead at the scene of what appears to be a robbery.” Det. Kishi continues, “We are truly sorry to have to do this over the phone.”
I have completely blanked out by this time in the conversation as I stare at my best friend on the ground. She has not moved from her position and she is not even crying. I think it is because she is going into shock from not only the information she has been given, but the fact that she is injured and needs to be at a hospital.
I interrupt whatever the man is saying, “Detective Kishi, I need for you to send an ambulance right away!”
“Ok, but can I ask why?” He sounds confused at this suddenly urgent request.
“Sango was injured and that is why we waiting for her parents, they were coming to pick us up and I can’t drive. We are from Tokyo so we don’t know the area and even if we did, I don’t think I could even think about trying to focus on anything right now”
“I will send the ambulance right away, where are you?”
Back to the present…
I drift out of my musings as we start gathering our stuff in the foyer. We have “Big Betty” as we have so named our gym bag. Not so much a gym bag as it is the largest receptacle of sporting goods ever made on this mans Earth. I actually stuck Shippo in the bag, on a bet, and he fit perfectly. I throw in my skates and Sango puts in her Riedells. I was always the one to spend extra money on my skates so I have Oberhammer boots, Black Diamond plates and king pins and the best trucks this side of the Mississippi, not to mention Cannibal wheels with the very best ceramic Pfaffner bearings you can buy with money. This was an extravagancy that I would NOT deny myself. I double check that I have all my supplies. I have the Charlie’s Magic Oil, wrenches for my trucks and wheels, 2 pairs of extra socks, the spandex one piece racing suit that is to be worn for try outs and my helmet, which was decorated by an ex who was an artist. It has flames that are deep purple against the white of the safety gear. Sango does the same mental preparations as we throw in our make up bags and purses, with room to spare. Maybe we should see about shoving Shippo in again? I laugh to myself…
“Kohaku?” Sango yells up the stairs, “Don’t you dare think that I won’t know if you don’t finish your homework before you come out.” She takes in her little brother who is quickly descending the stairs in his blue Cross Colours, that just so happen to match Sango’s.
“Oh, shut up Sango!!” Kohaku yells with a little smirk.
“You finish up your Algebra and meet us there ok?” She says in her most maternal voice.
“And don’t you dare think about wearing those, blue is my best color and these are my nicest Cross Colours.” She takes an unconscious look down at her lithe body. She is in a white body suit with light blue see through shell and her baggy blue Cross Colours that are riding low enough on her hips to see a little skin on her legs where the body suit ends and the pants begin. This is topped off by her white and blue Adidas and the wonderful blue streaks we added to her hair just an hour ago. She is more mature looking than me but if I was into woman, she would be a 10 on my list.
“Ok, be there in about an hour, later sis!!” Kohaku takes his leave bounding up the stairs.
Sango looks at me with a gleam in her eye. “On the count of three…”
“One…Two…THREE!!!” She throws up a rock sign with her fist as I throw up a paper sign at the same time.
“HELL YEAH!! Your turn to carry Big Betty!” I laugh heartily as I help her pick up the bag and head out the front door to her beautiful new 94’ Ford Probe. It is the most wonderful color of blue that I have ever seen. It has little flecks of metallic silver in the coat that makes is sparkle in the right lighting. As we pass by my 81’ Ford Escort, I audibly sigh, as I usually do. My Escort, named Ernie, burns oil by the quart and has one grey door. The rest of the car is red and there are small rust spots on the bottom of the doors and hatchback.
“Don’t do that Kags, it really gets on my nerves.”
“I can’t help it; my damn shoes cost more than my car. Where are my priorities?”
“I have no idea. You have been doing some pretty weird shit since you dumped Hojo. That poor guy didn’t know what hit him.”
“I know, he just wasn’t right for me. I mean, yeah he was just about the nicest guy I have ever met but….how do I put this without sounding like too much of a bitch….He just wasn’t fast enough for me.” I give Sango a look indicating my thoughts on the matter with an evil little sparkle in my eyes.
“You know, if you had said that to anyone else, they would have thought you were nuts and on top of it a hentei. I know exactly what you mean though. When a guy can’t even keep up with you in a 200 meter sprint at 25 meters, he’s got to go…” She lets out one of the best laughs. I haven’t heard her this happy in a long time and it does my heart good to have her this happy and I laugh with her genially.
I finally throw on my shoes as Sango so eloquently deposits Big Betty in the trunk of her car with a resounding thump. I jump in the passenger side as Sango gets in. I drop down the mirror on my side and give myself a wink and blow Sango a kiss.
“You ready for the best Friday night ever?”
“Let’s do it Kags, tonight is going to be the best one ever!”
“Punch it Margaret!!!” Sango hits the accelerator to the floor and we burn rubber out of the driveway. Speed is just what we need… and crave…
Eyes from afar watch in fascination as the beauty’s jump in their car and make their speedy getaway.
“I will be seeing more of you later this evening my dear sweet Kagome.” The evil man steps from the shadows to his car to follow the duo. He knows exactly where they are going and he has his plans in place. Tonight will be the night my dreams come true, and your nightmares become reality Kagome.
