‘Why did he want to come along this time?’, Kagome asked herself frustrated. It wasn’t as if he had any business in her world to attend to, so it seemed to her, he just had asked to annoy her.
Of course - if asked - he’d tell the truth, saying he wanted to supervise the buying of the instant noodles. A rational person would have acknowledged that fact and left it at that, but Kagome wasn’t being rational.
Her frequent visits to the shrine, often accompanied by Inuyasha, had given rise to a problem that – compared with her adventures in the feudal era – shouldn’t bother her at all. She was facing death on a daily basis without ever really questioning her actions, without trying to find an easy way to sneak out of her responsibility. And yet, she had cowardly avoided a simple talk with her mother, and had chosen to lie to her instead.
Of course it was her own fault for doing so, but she still held it against Inuyasha, that she now had to face the consequences. Whom else should she blame, if it was him, who made her take him to her mother, except maybe her mother herself, who would undoubtedly hint so clumsily at the subject, that even Inuyasha would finally get suspicious.
There was no choice. She had to tell him right away, or he’d blow her cover. She tried her best cute-little-girl-smile and approached the halfdemon, waiting for her at the well.
‘Inuyashaaa?’ Her tentative tone caught his attention instantly.
‘What it is now? Forgotten anything else? I will not be returning to camp a second time and look for your stuff! There’s no need to try and persuade me!’
Kagome was amazed, that he caught on so quickly to her going to utter a request, when he could be so very dense on other occasions. Maybe it was his demon side, that warned him whenever danger was close.
‘It’s not that, I just have to tell you something.’ ‘Great.’, she thought, ‘I already start to sound defensive.’
‘Tell me on the way then. The sooner we leave, the sooner we’ll be back. And didn’t you say yourself, that your mother wanted to cook for us? We’ll better hurry then.’
Despite his rash, Kagome didn’t move an inch closer to the well, and started fidgeting on the spot instead.
‘No, Inuyasha, really! It has to be now! I..’ She furrowed her brows and - for about the hundredth time - thought about a way to tell him, that would not make him go completely bonkers on her.
‘What is it?’ Inuyasha asked impatiently, but seeing her avoid any further eye contact with him, and instead study the tips of her shoes with the greatest interest made him worry.
‘What did you do?’, he asked suspiciously.
Slowly she started to speak, cautiously avoiding to look at him.
‘I,…well, actually I… I did something I shouldn’t have done and if I tell you,… you surely… you will be furious at me.’
Inuyasha wiggled his ears at her, to make sure, he hadn’t overheard anything important. She was really starting to freak him out. Crossing the few steps that lay between them, he crouched down in front of Kagome to force her to look him in the eye.
‘Tell me!’, he demanded and when she didn’t comply instantly, he forcefully added ‘And you better do so now.’
Taking a deep breath, Kagome decided to just lay it on him.
‘I… I told my mum, you were gay!’, she burst out and clenched her eyes shut, the moment she ended, as if that would make her invisible to the hanyou.
With baited breath she waited for the volcano to erupt, but when nothing happened, she cautiously opened an eye to glance at Inuyasha, who had now risen again and was staring at her in utter disbelieve.
‘You did what?’ he asked, but certainly not as furious as she had feared. Maybe it hadn’t yet sunk in completely.
‘It was just easier that way! You probably don’t understand, but I just wanted her to stop bothering me and so I…’ Kagome broke of, when Inuyasha grabbed her wrist.
‘No, I mean it! What did you do?’
‘I just told you! What else do you want to know?’
‘Kagome?’ That sounded more confused than angry actually, so she decided to keep on talking.
‘When I was home a few weeks ago, she started to ask me about you. She has done before, but it just got worse. I just wanted her to stop, you know? She was getting on my nerves with her questions and little hints all the time, so I decided to tell her you were gay, just to shut her up! I never meant…’
Inuyasha, who had been listening intently up to this point, suddenly put a finger over her mouth to stop her babbling and - when she had - with a forced calmness, he asked again.
‘Literally. Kagome, what is “gay”? What did you tell your mother?’
For a moment, Kagome was so surprised, she didn’t even think of closing her mouth, let alone answer him. She was simply speechless.
‘You don’t know?’, she asked incredulously, when she had found her voice again.
‘Nooo, obviously not.’ Inuyasha said a little annoyed.
‘Talk about Inuyasha being dense and naive sometimes!’, she thought to herself, but then it occurred to her, that it might just be called differently in the feudal era, and seeing as they hadn’t come across any gay communities yet…
‘”Gay” means, that you like men.’, she explained in a low voice, watching him from under her lashes.
For a moment, he didn’t react at all, but when he did, it was in a way Kagome hadn’t expected at all. He grinned lopsidedly and said matter-of-factly:
‘Well, no problem there. I do. Now let’s go, or we’ll definitely be late!’
Stunned silence followed his statement and again, Kagome not so much moved a muscle to comply with his request. But after the few seconds, that she needed to realise what exactly he had just said, the words came spilling from her mouth like water.
‘You do? You are? Why did you never tell me! What about Kikyou? What about me? I thought… Does Miroku know? Have you told anyone? Have you always been? How did you…?’
Kagome would have gone on for a lot longer in her quest to get more information out of Inuyasha, but the utterly confused look on his face stopped her.
‘What?’, she said in an angry voice, that betrayed her disappointment, not to have been trusted with this piece of information before.
‘What are you so surprised about?’ Inuyasha asked defensively and took a step back before he went on, talking himself into a kind of frenzy.
‘And why are you asking me all that? You were the one who told me to respect men in the first place and you were also the one who got on my nerves for months to admit that they are not all bad. And now you act all bitchy because I have grown to like them? I don’t get it! Of course I like men! Didn’t we just save a whole town just yesterday? Do you think I do it for the thrill? And why would your mother care to hear that? I met her before, remember? And I didn’t try to eat her or anything, just because she is humane! You know, I also like demons and half demons, if they don’t happened to be set to kill me! And animals, and plants, if they are not poisonous and…’
‘Oh…’ Kagome groaned inwardly. “Dense” didn’t even begin to describe this hanyou.
There was only one way to stop his rambling, and seeing what he had just put her through – unknowingly though it was – she couldn’t help a sly grin appearing on her lips when she uttered the one word.
‘Sit.’
Review? Pretty please? Thank you so much! ^_^
