After the Jewel Disappears

Inuyasha sat at the top of the hill it was sunrise the clouds just beginning to tint a pink-purple. The morning birds just starting their songs; the crickets going to bed after a long night singing. From here he could see all across the country side, all the way to the mountains. But today he wasn’t enjoying the view like he had with first Kikyo and then Kagome; today he was blind to the beauty around him. Instead he was lost in memories of that last battle. Looking back on everything now it seems such a long time ago. When we all stood and faced Naraku. Kagome gone into the cloudy air; Kikyo to hell without me; Sango, Miroku and Shippo off to live their own lives. Even Sesshomaru with Rin and Jaken left. I am now more alone than I was growing up. The only one left with me is Tetsusaiga. What am I to do? I have no one. Maybe I should just give up the Tetsusaiga and turn full demon like I wished to in the beginning. But that would mean giving up my soul, possibly killing my friends and in the end being killed. I am stronger now than I was last time I transformed but that doesn’t mean anything anymore.

Inuyasha turned tortured eyes toward the heavens. “Kikyo why did you leave me here? We were supposed to go to hell together. And you left me here all alone. Kagome I can forgive, she knew a long time ago that I had chosen you over her.” He begged the Kami’s for an answer. Knowing neither Kikyo nor Kagome could answer. He had told Kagome a long time ago that he had chosen Kikyo. That is why she left, but the jewel disappeared right before she did. What was her wish on it? She had the power and the strength to make a wish and now I am left wondering what it was. Knowing her it was for us all. Everyone she was to leave behind. She knew that she was leaving so she made a wish for everyone, that much I am sure of.

For three months Inuyasha sat on that hilltop, wondering if he should give up being hanyou or not. Summoning pictures and images from his own mind tormenting himself with Kikyo and Kagome. For three months Sesshomaru showed up and sat near the well willing Kagome to come back. Three months Miroku, Sango and Shippo spent in the Demon Slayer Village rebuilding it. But today Miroku and the others were back in Edo Village. And they were in Kaede’s hut talking with her about the Hanyou on the hill.

“Is he still moping about Kaede? I had hoped he would be better over time. But the loss of both Kagome and Kikyo must have done him in.” Sango asked worriedly.

“Yes Sango he misses both of them and he is in agony over what he feels is the abandonment of everyone. You, Miroku and Shippo all leaving to make new lives for yourselves. Kikyo leaving him behind when she went to hell, even Sesshomaru leaving him. I have no doubt that he felt betrayed that everyone left him all alone and for so long.”

“But Kaede, we didn’t leave him in fact we wanted him to come with us. But he told us to just go on without him. And we did perhaps that was our mistake. But we thought he needed time to accept what Kikyo has done. Kagome made a wish on the Jewel of Four Souls before she left. She spoke to us but not to Inuyasha about the wish. Maybe that is another thing he is wondering about.” Miroku said angry at their own stupidity.

“Kagome’s wish? What was it?” Kaede asked curiously.

“Only that when she left everyone she cared about would be happy. And that we all get what we want most.” Sango stated sadly missing the young woman who had been like her own sister.

“Really? Well then that would explain why I have my newest apprentice. One who will care for the shrine here after I am dead.”

“What is his name Kaede?” Miroku asked curiously.

“Why his name is Onomari Higurashi.”

“Ah, one of Kagome’s ancestors this shrine will be well protected for centuries.”

“Yes Miroku, it will be. But why did Kagome leave, and why has she not come back?” Kaede asked.

“Perhaps because she does not wish to come back and get her heart broken again. You must have noticed the way she was looking at Sesshomaru after he saved her during battle.” Miroku stated.

“Sesshomaru? Yes I did sense something. This raises another question. Why did Sesshomaru leave when he could have killed Inuyasha easily after the battle with Naraku?” Sango asked perplexed.

“Which raises yet another question, what did Sesshomaru want most?” Miroku asked sarcastically.

“That question is easily answered monk. This Sesshomaru wanted the priestess Kagome. And since she left I had no reason to stay and kill Inuyasha.”
“S-Sesshomaru? Y-You loved Kagome?” Miroku stammered as the demon in question walked up to them.

“Is it that difficult to believe? Yes I loved Kagome, how could I not? She was braver than any demoness I know. She was also lovely and loyal to a fault. Though her loyalty was not towards me. The half-breed did not deserve her. She was even unafraid of me. Fought me to help her Inuyasha.” Sesshomaru ground out angrily.
Miroku watched Sesshomaru as he spoke of Kagome noting the way the words of praise were said with pride. And the way she fought him for Inuyasha was said with anger.
“Kagome left after making her wish for those she cared for. I, obviously, was not one she cared for. Or my wish would have been granted. As it stands I come here everyday to look for her. But she is never here. Only Inuyasha sitting on that hill moping around contemplating setting aside the Tetsusaiga. And wishing for death. Were I in the mood to oblige him I would kill him. But for some reason I cannot.”

Miroku and Sango looked on in silence as Sesshomaru talked to them, both had looks of enlightenment on their faces. Neither could make any sense of what they were being told. Sesshomaru loved Kagome who loved Inuyasha who loved Kikyo. This love triangle was becoming more and more complicated.

“This Sesshomaru is going to stand by the well in hopes of seeing Kagome. The presence of you Monk and you Demon Slayer has brought the hope back to this Sesshomaru. Today may be the day she returns.” Sesshomaru stated simply. And he turned around and walked toward the well in Inuyasha’s forest.

“Do you think that it is possible she will come back with us here?” Sango put in hopefully

“Not likely, seeing as Shippo and Kirara are not here yet. They aren’t supposed to be here until later this evening. True but that would still be today.” Miroku replied sadly.

“But will Sesshomaru see her today or tomorrow or ever for that matter?” Kaede asked still mystified about what she had learned from the stoic demon lord.

Miroku and Sango just looked at each other then after the demon still confused about the whole thing.
