Kaili

A tall slender woman gazed at her reflection in the smooth surface of the river, she was admiring the odd sprinkling of freckles over her nose marring her moonlight pale skin. Her hair was the color of freshly fallen snow and it hung like threads of silk down her back ending at her knees.

“Someday you’ll fall in gawking at yourself like that Kaili.” Jiro said smirking as he left his hiding place in the forest just behind her. Kaili stood, nearly falling in from how quickly she did so.

“How do you know I gawk at myself unless you watch me all the time Jiro?” she asked smugly.

“I..I do not watch you all the time, who’d want to do that when there’s some many much more beautiful females in the village.” he stated.

“You’re a dumb-ass!” she said offended before bounding away. Jiro mentally slapped himself. “Way to go stupid.” he thought to himself.

Kaili was by far the least girly of the females in the Inu Youkai tribe, she preferred running around in the forests and meadows while other girls fixed their hair and make up. She was often in trouble for one thing or another, but mainly for all the lovely kimonos her mother made being ruined.

“Hello daughter, how are you today.” her father Kisho greeted as she came running up to their home.

“Hello Father, I’m afraid that I am in a bad mood thanks to Jiro and his hateful words.” she said sticking her tongue out in the direction she had just came from. Her father chuckled.

“My dear child you look so grown yet you are not quite as mature as we’d like considering that this is to be the year in which you will find yourself a mate and have a house of your own.” he said.

“Oh father must I be sold off like a bolt of silk?” she asked sadly.

“It has been done this way for centuries long before even I was born.” he said firmly.

“Yes father, I understand.” she said before bowing and entering the hut.

“Kaili have you been traipsing around in that all day?” her mother Akina asked looking slightly annoyed. Kaili grinned sheepishly.

“Father gave it to me, he said if I was going to act like a boy then I shouldn’t be running around in such fine kimonos so he gave me this to wear.” she said pulling down the short boy’s kimono.

“For Kami’s sake Kaili when are you going to grow up?” Akina asked exasperated.

“When Jiro stops calling me ugly.” she stated arching an eyebrow and crossing her arms. Akina’s eyes lit up and a smile stretched across her beautiful pale face.

“Oh I see, well perhaps he will, you run along and go with the healer, your training is in an hour.” Akina said as she stood from the cushion she’d been sitting on. “Oh and change before you go.” she added. Kaili gave her mother a bow and went to her room. Akina went to find her mate.

“My dear husband, I have some news for you.” Akina said as she approached her mate in the ornamental gardens in their backyard.

“What news would that be?” he asked turning to face her. She smiled brightly.

“I believe our youngest daughter has chosen her mate, however he is not willing it would seem.” She said. Kisho looked stunned.

“Would it be young Jiro?” Kisho asked. Akina gave a nod.

“Yes, but he still calls her names and remains childish, I believe this is also the reason why Kaili has still been acting childish.” she said.

“I’ll talk with him.” Kisho said.

“I did say I’d go through with this, but I don’t remember agreeing to this!” Kaili exclaimed as her mother twisted and knotted her hair. Her face was painted to look even paler her lips painted red. “And what is so beautiful about looking like a red lipped corpse?” Kaili added.

“Do be quiet, you should be happy today, not whining in my ear like a mosquito.” her mother said finishing her hair and placing the hood over her daughters head.

“Is all this really worth it? I mean this is all just so there will be pups right?” Kaili asked sadly.

“There is more to it than just having someone around to keep you pregnant Kaili, he will protect you and provide for you.” Akina said.

“I can protect and provide for myself.” she whispered. Her hands shaking with her nervousness.

“He’ll be the heat the warms you in winter.” her mother said grinning.

“Oh disgusting mother!” Kaili said laughing.

“Got you to laugh didn’t it? Her mother asked, dropping the proper way of speaking she usually used.

“I suppose...let’s get this over with.” Kaili said standing.

Jiro was nervous, his heart felt as though it was going to beat out of his chest, he had known since they were pups that he and Kaili would be here today, but now it was reality and he felt trapped.

When Kaili was presented to him she took his breath away. Dressed in white and walking gracefully towards him her head bowed. This part of the whole mating thing was just for show, the true bonding of mates was a private affair after all.

After the small mock wedding the entire tribe was invited to feast and dine to their hearts content. Kaili picked at her food, but had drank enough sake to intoxicate to full grown bear demons.

“I swear to drunk I’m not Kami.” Kaili stated when her sober mate asked her if she was drunk. He had lead her away from the celebration to a new hut at the edge of the village one side facing the woods. He lead her to bed where she passed out as soon as her head hit her pillow.
