Chapter 1: Inuyasha-Oniisama, Aishiteru…
The young beauty surveyed her surroundings from the top of the stone steps of her family shrine, a wooden broom held in her delicate hands. She closed her eyes, taking in a deep breath of the crisp winter air. Opening her eyes, she nodded and continued to sweep the snow-covered steps. Imbedded into her was over eighteen years plus several generations of a priestess’s training and nothing, not even a snowy day, would keep her from doing so. The soft crunching of snow beneath someone’s feet caught her attention and she turned to see her younger sibling carrying a wooden straw broom as well.
“Ah, Imoto-Chan,”
The younger girl approached her older sister, adorned in the same red and white priestess robes as she. Bowing her head in respect, she raised it only to inform her sister that she had completed her own set of shrine duties. The older woman smiled approvingly at her.
“Very good, Kagome-Chan. Do you think that we have done enough for today?” Kikyo asked, looking back out into the distance.
Kagome didn’t dare speak once Kikyo turned her attention out to the horizon. She knew what that far-off look in her older sister’s eyes meant; she was waiting for someone and sadly, Kagome knew exactly who that someone was. Kikyo turned back to face her younger sister with a smile.
“Shall we head into the shrine for the rest of the day, Kagome-Chan?”
”Hai, Oneechan. Do you have plans for the day?”
“Yes,”
As the two sisters began their journey back towards the shrine house, Kagome noticed a smile warm enough to melt the snow spread across her sister’s face.
“Inuyasha will be stopping by shortly. I promised I’d make him dinner tonight. Will you be joining us, Kagome?”
Kagome shook her head with a small sigh. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to see him, it was just…
“I have to continue to study for my exams.”
“That’s right, you’ll be starting junior high soon, won’t you? My, it seems like only yesterday you made fifteen. Okaasama would be very proud.”
Kagome nodded with a smile. She always enjoyed being praised by her elder sister. Kikyo very much resembled their late mother, with her soft, brown eyes and delicate beauty and had even inherited her mannerisms. Kagome felt very at peace with Kikyo as her guardian. As they approached the shed to store the brooms, Kikyo informed Kagome she would be taking a bath and asked as a favor if she’d go to meet Inuyasha.
“Of course!” Kagome’s brown eyes sparkled.
”Arigato, Imoto-Chan. Be sure to make him tea to help him warm up. I’m not quite sure how bad the snowfall is in his world.”
His world…Kagome always felt a chill down her spine whenever she was reminded of the secret shared between only her sister and herself; a secret that came with the inherited well just on the grounds of their shrine.
“Hai, I will. Would you like me to start a bath for you?”
“Yes, if you don’t mind.”
“Of course not.” Kagome smiled.
“Won’t you change out of your robes? It’s a bit light, even if this weather.”
Kagome shook her head as she hurried off towards the shrine house.
“Don’t worry, Oneesama! I’ll be fine!”
Kikyo watched with a loving and warm smile as Kagome headed into the home. While Kagome was only three years her junior in life, sometimes it seemed to Kikyo she was much younger than that. As Kikyo headed towards the house, she walked past the large Goshinboku, the ‘God Tree’. It was just around the time of Kagome’s second birthday that their mother passed away from a bad case of pneumonia. Despite Kikyo’s age of only five at the time, she worked hard, accepting help from the neighbors to help her with Kagome, but the shrine was her sole duty and she refused to ask for help from anyone. It was when Kagome made four that Kikyo began training her in the way of the priestess. Kikyo always seemed to have more time on her hands, but alas, one always did when they didn’t attend school. Kikyo sighed to herself as she entered the shrine. What opportunities had she missed because she hadn’t attended school at all? In a way, she was envious of her younger sibling…
“Kikyo! The bath is all ready!” Kagome announced.
“Thank you! I’ll be there in a moment!”
Kikyo stepped out of her sandals and made her way through the warm, modernized shrine house. It was only modern in the aspects of Kagome’s ‘western’ bedroom, the kitchen and the solitary television in the dining room where they ate. Kikyo enjoyed her old-fashioned bedroom and was so strict to her training, she had gotten used to the sliding doors and large futon that made up her bedroom. Kikyo entered said bedroom, only to change out of her robes and her hair down. She took a deep breath before opening her eyes once more and smiled inwardly; her room consisted of many treasures found only in the Feudal Era, brought over by Inuyasha. Vases, plants, scrolls…Kikyo adored every single one of them. Wrapping a towel around her body, Kikyo made her way to the bathroom where Kagome was still testing the water in the indoor bath, modeled after a hot springs. Kagome stood by silently as Kikyo removed her bath towel, always envious of her sister’s beautiful body; it was perfection. The same, impure question interrupted her thoughts yet again; How many times had Inuyasha seen her older sister’s body and made it ‘impure’? Kagome shook her head with a slight blush. There was no way her older sister could be impure, despite the fact Kagome had heard them ‘together’ several times. Every time, Kagome would place her pillow over her ears and wish so desperately it was she he was holding in his strong arms.
“Nee, Kagome-Chan?”
”Hai, Kikyo?” Kagome smiled.
“Would you mind washing my back for me?”
”Of course not…!”
Kagome found a soft cloth and began washing her older sister’s back. Her skin was so beautiful and so smooth…Regardless for how she felt when Inuyasha held her sister’s body in his arms, Kikyo was perfection in Kagome’s eyes. Absently, Kagome pressed her forehead to Kikyo’s back. Kikyo barely glanced over her shoulder and gave Kagome a gentle smile.
“Is there something bothering you, Kagome?”
“Kikyo…how can I become beautiful like you?”
Kikyo giggled and turned, facing Kagome. Kagome blushed upon seeing her sister’s perfect chest as well. Kikyo smiled; Kagome had always asked that question, even when she was similar. As always, Kikyo placed her hands on Kagome’s robed shoulders and smiled.
”Just be yourself, Kagome-Chan. That’s all.”
Kagome sighed in dejection.
“What if being myself isn’t enough?”
”Well, who would you want to be? You can’t be anyone else but yourself, Kagome-Chan.” Kikyo smiled.
Kagome giggled a little and nodded her head in agreement.
“I guess you’re right. Oops, I have to meet Inuyasha soon! I’ll start the tea and then go to get him.”
”Alright then, be safe.”
Once Kikyo settled into the bath, Kagome excused herself and prepared to meet Inuyasha. Once the tea was started, Kagome slipped into her sandals and headed back outside, but Kikyo’s question was still heavy within her; true, Kagome couldn’t be anyone but herself, but…would she ever be able to be the image of perfection her sister Kikyo was?
The snow began to fall as Kagome approached the old wellhouse. The wind quickly changed and Kagome stopped short of opening the doors; he was already on his way here. Slowly opening the doors to the wellhouse, she could see the familiar light in the well. The glowing brought with it the sound of howling dogs and a figured cloaked in all red, with beautiful silver hair. He stood on the lip of the well and took a deep breath before looking at the young shrine maiden standing at the top of the stairs leading from the well.
“Kagome-Chan…”
“I…Inu…Inuyasha-Oniisama...” Kagome barely rasped.
Kagome lowered her head with a blush; she’d called him that ever since she was five and had first met her ‘sister’s big secret’. Still, the feelings she felt for him were far beyond that of a surrogate older brother. Inuyasha hopped down from the well and almost instantly, she watched his usual transformation take place; his silver hair turned to black, claws turned to simple fingernails and his sharp fangs had turned to normal human canines.
“Ah, dammit, I hate going through this…” he muttered as he ascended up the stairs.
“I’m certain Kikyo is working on a way to stop you from losing your demonic traits whenever you cross over to our world.” Kagome giggled at his swearing.
Inuyasha shrugged and stopped to look at her; Kagome was still cute, even though she was what people would call a ‘woman’ in his time. A girl like her would have probably had a husband if she’d lived in the Feudal Era; she pretty, but had nothing on Kikyo, who was beautiful all over. Kagome blushed under his gaze and led him out of the well house. Why had he been staring at her like that? Kagome was certain she didn’t want to know the answer.
