Chapter I: When Demons Giggle

Kagome sighed, trying hard to look away from Sango’s concerned looks as she began reorganizing her overstuffed backpack. Ever since Kikyo had joined the group, Kagome had felt broken between trying to keep doing her duty of getting the shards back and wanting to puke every time she saw Kikyo wrapping her arms around Inuyasha. The very thought made her wince.

And Kikyo never missed an opportunity to make Kagome utterly miserable. Sometimes she would kiss Inuyasha right in front of her. Sometimes she would drop her things right in front of Kagome and demand she pick them up. But what was worse, Inuyasha never said a word. He never stopped her or offered his help or relieved her in any way from his lover’s torments. It was like he had no pity on her at all.

Kagome sighed. And what was she suppose to do? If anyone spoke up, Inuyasha got pissed and they didn’t see the couple for days. And they weren’t use to defending themselves without a demon for help. No, the only thing any of them could do was bear the completely in control Kikyo.

“Hey Sango, I’m going to take a bath. Would you like to join me?” Sango smiled at her.

“That sounds lovely Kagome but I promised Miroku I’d help him find dinner. Apparently Inuyasha’s to good to catch anyone else’s food…” She shrugged apologetically and began searching for a dagger she’d misplaced. Kagome wanted to smile but her mouth wouldn’t even manage a twitch.

“Okay, see you later then. I shouldn’t be gone long.” She began to walk out of the small hut just as Kikyo began to walk in.

The tension was immediate, thick enough to taste, and sharp enough to cut a demon.

Kagome glanced away as soon as her eyes met the undead miko’s causing the other to snort.

“Move.” Kikyo ordered.

For a split second, Kagome thought of doing something, saying something. And yet, nothing came to mind. Instead, she just stepped to the side, allowing the woman to go first. Sango didn’t stop glaring the whole time. Giving a small, almost inaudible sigh, Kagome proceeded to the nearest hot spring.

“Oh, and Kagome?”

The younger miko stopped mid-step, closing her eyes. ‘Of course I wasn’t going to get away that easily.’

“Hai?” Kagome asked attentively, hating the sound of her own voice.

“We’re out of arrows. I took your last three so you will need to make some for the both of us. Gather a few sticks, rocks, and whatever feathers you can find while you’re out.”

A moment of silence passed between the two of them as Kikyo waited for Kagome to agree to her order.

Hesitantly, Kagome actually spoke her mind.

“Last time I checked, you were a miko too, Kikyo.” She said softly, yet icily. A moment of silence passed again as Kikyo slowly began to smile.

“And make sure the sticks aren’t too thick or they won’t fly straight.”

‘It’s like I didn’t even speak.’

“Hai.” Kagome murmured.

“Good.” Kikyo turned and entered the hut just as Sango was leaving. They both pretended not to notice the other.

“Hate her.” Sango murmured as she walked past Kagome. The younger miko sighed. She hated her too, they all hated her. Poor Shippo acted like he was walking on egg shells around her. Miroku wouldn’t touch her to save his life. Sango never turned her back on her, as if she were a particularly dangerous demon. No, not one of them could stand the undead woman. No one except one.

And he was the only one that mattered.

Kagome shook her head as she begun her walk into the forest, trying to escape her thoughts. Caught up in her own worries, she never sensed the invisible demoness above her in the tree tops, frowning at the entire situation.

“So, this is how things fair under the roof of the youngest Inuyashito son.” The beautiful woman spoke to herself. She tossed her golden yellow hair to the side and watched Kagome in the distance. “Poor little broken miko…how tragic…Hmm, I wonder how things fair under the roof of the eldest Inuyashito son?”

She smiled and disappeared into a cloud of white smoke.

Sesshoumaru frowned and glanced up at the sky. If he’d been a demon that showed his emotions, he would’ve scowled and cursed at it. Daylight couldn’t blanket what instinct was screaming at him.

It was, as his mother so poetically put it, “the moons of mating, the months of passion so painful it was pleasurable, the time of the beast within.” Sesshoumaru actually did frown at this, remembering. He knew what was going to happen, and didn’t like it one bit. As a youkai that never showed his emotions, the idea of them all bursting out at one time uncontrollably to even a demon of his power made him, in a word, pissed.

He momentarily pushed his thoughts away to pay attention to the young girl at his side. Rin had grown so much. At twelve, she was already turning into a fine young woman. Which is why Sesshoumaru hated (though he would never show it) to make her cry like he was. Large tears rolled down her face.

“My lord, please don’t leave! Take me with you! I promise, I can handle myself!” Sesshoumaru nearly smiled as she gripped the dagger at her side in determination and brushed away her tears. ‘How cute…’ He thought with an un-shown fatherly affection. To him, she was still the bouncy eight year old that refused to stop talking long enough to breathe.

The girl before him now, while still talkative and cute, was also independent and fearless. Sesshoumaru sighed mentally at that. Her fearlessness was mostly his doing. As he would never let anything hurt the human girl (and the fact that she carted around a two-headed dragon) made her believe herself invincible, no matter how much her instructors tried to pound it into her that she wasn’t.

“I will not have a helpless female under my care out on such a night, Rin.” Sesshoumaru murmured as he walked, watching his soldiers and sorcerers secure the castle for the long months ahead. He wasn’t worried about Rin not being able to hear him. After living with demons for so long, her ability to hear had perked up quite a bit.

“I am not a helpless female!” She ran after him daintily, easily keeping up.

“You are helpless when I am not in control of myself.”

“I am not helpless! Didn’t Master Hikiru tell you about the snake demon I killed last week? And I did it alone!” Sesshoumaru did recall the conversation and the pride that came with it as he watched her show off the skin to her companions. He’d felt swollen with pride.

“Do not brag about yourself, Rin, it is unbecoming to a young lady.” He ordered, as if bored.

Rin growled at him. Sesshoumaru nearly smiled at the dog demon habit she’d picked up from him.

“No growling, that is not becoming to a young lady either.”

The tomboy rolled her eyes. “Otou-san,” She murmured since no one was around. “Let me come. I beg of you.”

“Iie. This Sesshoumaru will not repeat himself.”

“And this Rin will not accept that answer.” Rin murmured under her breath.

Sesshoumaru narrowed his eyes. “Watch your tongue.”

Rin bent her head in defeat, dark bangs covering her eyes. “Hai, Lord Sesshoumaru-sama.” She responded subordinately, though her bitterness wasn’t lost on Sesshoumaru.

“You are dismissed.”

Twisting around, she ran off at full speed. Sesshoumaru watched as a group of servant boys, the ones she played with, greeted her warmly. She brushed by them as if they weren’t even there. Sesshoumaru sighed mentally. He disliked leaving her mad at him, but he knew that part of her anger wasn’t at being left behind.

Sesshoumaru thought of the barrier being placed around her room. He was having her stay within the confines until he returned home. Though Sesshoumaru knew the Mating Moons could last anywhere from two months to two years, he knew that it was the best thing to do. She had to stay safe, that was the important thing.

“At least I won’t have to worry about anyone attacking, everyone’s preoccupied with the Moons.” After a moment, his young ward’s tear-stained face came to mind. And, as on one was around, he really did scowl.

“What is the point of these blasted moons? What good can come of anything that keeps me away from that which gives me peace?”

Gaining control again, Sesshoumaru continued on with his examinations, completely walking past the invisible demoness sitting on the stone wall. The woman shook her head again. “Not much better at the eldest son’s household.” She spoke again as if to herself. “How sad for the little ward. And for the Demon Lord…Hmmm…I wonder what’s going on at the River of a Thousand Waterfalls.” She stood, as if to leave when she cocked her head to the side and glanced back, as if someone were whispering in her ear.

“Iie, I don’t believe the Demon Lord has that much faith in the Mating Moons.” She sighed, speaking to an unseen person. She was silent again, as if listening.

“Well now! Don’t get mad at me! How exactly do you plan to make a believer out of him?” Wind blew though her hair, seemingly her sole companion.

“The miko!” Her nose crinkled up. Something whistled past her ear, as if speaking quickly. The demoness’ eyes widened in shock. “Well that’s a terrible thing to do! But…I suppose that since you play on remedying the situation immediately, it should be too bad…” She appeared thoughtful for a moment. “Okay, I agree to do this. In any case, it will help past the time. Okay! Now, where exactly do I find these Shikon shards you speak of?” The demoness listened and giggled before disappearing in a white cloud.

Sesshoumaru frowned and looked behind him. He could’ve sworn he’d heard a woman giggle. He shook his head, disgusted with himself. It wasn’t even night time and he was already letting the moons get to his head.

O:o:O

Kagome groaned and placed a hand on her back to help her straighten up from picking up more sticks. ‘Curse Kikyo for giving me this chore!’ She thought bitterly, trying to balance the load in her arms.

Who did she thinks she was anyway? ‘She knows she’s the lover of the head of the group…and the only man you’ve ever loved…’ Kagome shook the thought from her head. This was no time to be sulking over her situation. She looked around the dark woods, blessing her miko powers. She’s certainly get lost without them.

Believing Inuyasha to be back at camp, she focused on his aura and let instinct guide her to it as she had may times before. One of the last horrible mistakes she’d ever make.

Kagome let instinct completely take over and guide her safely to the hanyou. She was too busy watching the wobbling stack of rocks and sticks and trying to balance them without having to watch every step too. Suddenly, as Inuyasha’s aura became nearer, Kagome began hearing moans.

‘What is that?’ She wondered. She heard them again, someone was moaning. ‘Is someone hurt?’ She wondered quickening her pace. As she stumbled into a clearing and looked over her armful of branches, Kagome knew she’d made a terrible, terrible mistake.

She’d mistaken moans of pleasure for moans of pain.

Both Inuyasha and Kikyo were naked, staring at her. The sticks clattered to the ground as Kagome’s heart broke into a million pieces. Kagome’s mouth made motions like a fish out of water as the two stared. Kikyo scowled and broke the silence.

“Do you enjoy watching people have sex, pervert?”

She brought Inuyasha’s mouth back to hers. Just as he was about seal their kiss, he tilted his head toward Kagome.

“Leave.”

Kagome’s stomach lurched. Leave? Leave…? By this time he’d lowered his mouth back to Kikyo. Kagome couldn’t believe it. He didn’t even feel sorry or embarrassed she’d caught him like that! All he did was tell her to leave.

‘Fine, Inuyasha.’ She thought bitterly, brokenly as she began to run away from the horrible sight. ‘I’ll leave, forever. You want me to leave, I will. Your whore wants my soul. Fine. I don’t give a damn anymore.’

Kagome ran, and ran. And when she got tired, she used her miko energy (something she never did) to propel herself forward. By the time she actually had to stop, she was completely tired. But she was also on a mission. She noticed that a tiny stream was before her. She plunged her hand into it and pulled out a jagged rock.. Just as she was lifting it to her wrists…

Someone giggled.

Kagome head snapped to the side, the miko energy that was left telling her dizzily that it was a female demon. And a very beautiful one at that. ‘I’m tired of beautiful women.’ Kagome thought wearily. The demon smiled, as if hearing her thoughts. “What do you want?” Kagome snapped. “If you want to feast on my body, at least wait until after I’m dead.”

The demon had the nerve to chuckled. “Forgive me, priestess, for I’m not the human feasting type.”

“Then what type are you?” ‘For Kami’s sake, can’t I die in peace?’

The demon smiled. “I am quite a few things, miko. But for the purposes of this conversation and meeting, let’s just say I am the wish granting type.”

“The wish granting type?” Kagome repeated tiredly. ‘There’s a new one.’

“Exactly.” The beautiful woman replied, walking toward Kagome, who jumped up automatically. “You see, Lady Kagome, you don’t want to die.”

“Really? Cause let me tell you, right now I feel like bleeding until my soul slips away.” Kagome laughed bitterly.

The demon smiled indulgingly. “You don’t want to die, Lady Miko. You want to stop feeling. You want the pain to go away, and you don’t want to wait for time to do it for you. You want it done now.”

Kagome was shocked by the accuracy of statements. “And you,” Kagome inquired warily. “Being the wish granting type, can do that?”

She grinned. “Not me, miko. But I have something that can.” Without reaching into her pockets or moving whatsoever, the demon opened her hand and produced…

“A Shikon-no-tama shard.” Kagome whispered. But this shard was different. It swirled and pulsed black and purple.

“And unpurified Shikon-no-tama shard.” She corrected fondly, stroking it with one clawed finger.

Kagome frowned. The little energy she had left screamed for her not to do it, but she pushed the tiny voice aside. “And this will keep me from feeling the pain.” Kagome whispered. Smiling, the lady demon nodded.

Glancing from the shard to her, Kagome frowned. “What’s the catch?”

“No catch.” She responded enthusiastically.

Slowly, Kagome reached for the Shikon shard…

Only to have the demon’s hand close around it. “What do you have to trade?” She demanded. Kagome blinked.

“T-trade?” She stuttered, a bit taken a-back. The female nodded once.

“What…what do you want? My soul?” She laughed, half-sarcastically, half-fearfully. She waved the question away.

“Iie, I don’t want your soul! I have millions of those! I want that!” She pointed to Kagome’s head. Kagome blinked.

“My hair?”

“Iie! That!”

Kagome’s hand ran along her ponytail. “You…you want my hair ribbon?” ‘Is she serious?’

“I’ve never seen such a pretty blue!” The female demon squealed. Hesitantly, Kagome undid the ribbon, letting her hair fall down, and handed it to the woman who snatched it up greedily.

“Okay! Here you go!” She dropped the shard in Kagome’s hand and became completely preoccupied with the hair ribbon. Kagome frowned at the evil and heat coming from the shard.

“Better put it in before it melts right through your hand, miko.”

“Put it in where?”

The woman sighed in exasperation. She just been consumed with rubbing the silk ribbon against her face. “Your heart, miko, isn’t that where it hurts?

‘She’s right…’ Kagome thought. And it hurts so much. ‘The hell with it, what’s the worst that could happen? I already want to die…well, here goes nothing.’

“Be careful, if you don’t put in gently it’ll kill you.”

‘Death or a mystery, neither one matters to me.’ With that thought, Kagome pressed the Jewel deep inside her chest.

She gasped at the pain and dropped to the ground. She couldn’t even hold herself up with her arms, they were so racked with pain. Clawing at the dirt, she gasped for pain. Or, at least, she tried to. No air brushed past Kagome’s lips. She couldn’t breath. Kagome clawed at her throat, trying desperately to grasp at air. She fell to her side, seeing spots and becoming dizzy with pain and lack of oxygen. All of this happened in the blink of an eye.

Slowly, darkness began closing around her eyes.

The demoness walked into her blurred vision, looking sheepish. “Sorry miko, I guess I forgot to tell you. The Shikon shard will sort of kill you…but only a little! Then again, you used up so much of your miko energy already, I’m not entirely sure what it will do… But I’m pretty sure it won’t kill you!” She grinned. “I’ll be seeing you around, Lady Kagome. I think you might need me again. Good luck.”

The last thing Kagome remembered was a toss of golden hair and a giggle that seemed to come from everywhere.
