Not So Original, Am I?

Chapter One: Not So Original, Am I?

Tokyo - 2256

He woke up in a cold sweat; even through the closed blinds, he could tell it was still dark outside his bedroom window. Suddenly, the door opened, and the soft light from the hallway flooded his vision, momentarily blinding him. He blinked a few times, and his vision slowly returned to normal. He glared into the bright light and finally made out the figure standing in his doorway.

“Kimi?” he asked in a quiet voice. “Kim, is that you?”

“Yea,” she murmured, stepping inside his room and shutting the door as quietly as she could. She didn’t want to be responsible for waking Suzume and Minoru down the hall.

“Kimiko?” he asked her. “Why are you here now, this late at night?”

She slowly crawled into the bed with him, fitting perfectly into his arms.

“I had one of those dreams again.”

He sighed, but held her anyway. ‘Her scent is so much like Kagome’s…’ he thought. He rubbed his cheek against hers and closed his eyes, squeezing her close to his naked body. She was wearing only a giant t-shirt of his.

The next morning, he woke in bed alone once again. He looked around and breathed in deeply, rubbing his face into the pillow beside his head. The t-shirt Kimi had been wearing the night before was slung over the back of his wooden chair, and he could still catch her scent lingering in the pillow she had slept on.

He walked into the kitchen, where the other four members of their small, revolutionary group were already up. Suzume, with her long, black hair tied back in a tight bun, her trademark hot pink eye shadow, and her deep, brown eyes, sat beside Minoru, who had his sleek, black hair cut very short, and he watched his young wife with amethyst eyes. Suzume had to lean back in her chair to help balance herself with that huge 8-month-pregnant belly. Shippo sat in the chair across from the pregnant demon slayer, munching on his pancakes. Kimi was at the stove, cooking the breakfast everyone was starting the day on.

He stared at her. She still had her hair down, and she turned to look at him. With it down, she looked exactly like Kikyo… only her face had a much softer look to it, much like Kagome’s. Her demeanor was different from either of his former lovers, though; and he absolutely loved it.

Kimi caught him staring at her once again. “Yash?” she asked him. “Are you all right?”

He snapped out of it. “Yea, I’m fine. Just got a little distracted, that’s all.”

It dawned on her. “Oh,” she mumbled. “I’m so sorry. I’ll go… put it up.”

He sat down at the table as she set the frying pan to the side and rushed out of the room to change. He looked at Suzume, Shippo, and Minoru. “Why does she feel she needs to do that?” he asked them.

Suzume was the one who spoke up. “She doesn’t want you to feel sad looking at her. She has some seriously strong feelings for you, you know.”

The hanyou nodded. “I know.”

Minoru spoke up, “She just doesn’t want you to think of her like you used to think of Kagome or Kikyo. She knows it’s a little bit of a shady past, but she doesn’t know all of the details.”

“We’ve been working on this since she was, what? Fifteen? And she still doesn’t remember all of it?” Shippo asked. The fox demon had grown into a strapping young man; his hair had become long and fluffy and orange; he’d really become quite an asset since the feudal times. “She’s how old now?” he asked.

“I’m twenty-two,” Kimi filled in, walking back into the room. She had put her hair up into a high ponytail, and she had put on dark eyeliner and green eye shadow. Yash sighed and smiled at her. “Now you look like yourself,” he told her. She gave him a soft peck on the lips as she passed him to get back to her cooking. “And, yes, I know that today’s the day,” she said.

Suzume and Minoru looked at each other. “They’ll be arriving any minute,” Minoru said. The two started to stand; Minoru had to help his wife to her feet.

“Maybe you and Suzume should stay here this time,” Kimi suggested, leaning on the nearest chair. Suzume glared at her as she stood beside her friend and husband, holding her gigantic belly. Kimi held up her hands in defense, a look of panic on her face. “I’m only thinking of your health and safety, Sue,” she told her best friend. “Yours and the baby’s.”

After a moment of thought, Suzume nodded in agreement. “It probably would be best. I’m really too close to my due date to be running around.”

The other four breathed a sigh of relief. “Ok,” Minoru said, “I’m going to stay here with her.”

Yash nodded. ‘So it’ll be just me, Shippo, and Kimiko,’ he thought, trying to plan out in his head how this would go about. ‘So, we’ll go and pick up the past from the well on the other side of Tokyo…’ He shook his head. “We need to get going,” he said to the others. “We might miss them if we wait too long.”

Kimi nodded in agreement. “Shippo, you ready to go?”

He clutched his stomach. “I’m starting to get a little nervous. And nauseous. I think I’ll stick around here and help Minoru and Suzume.”

The Miko made a face at him. “Pussy.”

He made a face back. “Slut.”

“Carnivore.”

“Hanyou-loving hoebag.”

“Geez,” Yash said, staring at Shippo. “That’s enough, right there. Now you’re offending me.”

Kimi glared at him. “Sit,” she said simply. Yash sat for the first time in over a year, since Kimi had figured out that little trick of hers. She looked down at him with a playful look in her chocolate brown eyes. “Come on, boy,” she told him with a smile on her face. “Let’s get going. It’s just the two of us.”

She walked over to the gun rack hanging on the wall beside the front door after helping Yash to his feet. She grabbed her trademark crossbow and slung an extra rifle across her back. Yash grabbed his shotgun and did the same as Kimi with another rifle. Checking them out in mirror, he nodded. He wore baggy blue jeans and a loose, black t-shirt with black Etnies on his feet. Kimi wore a fluttery, black mini-skirt, knee-high black boots that laced all the way up to the top, and a dark green tunic shirt with a deep v-neck. Her hair was in that high ponytail, and she wore green eye shadow that made her eyes really stand out.

“Once again, Kim, we look badass,” he told her. She nodded. “We’re rebels. We’re supposed to look badass,” she reminded him. He kissed her on the cheek, then led her into the outside world.

“Hurry up and pull me out of here, Inuyasha!” Kagome cried out from the bottom of the well. She huffed when he didn’t answer. She dug her fingers into the side of the stone well and crawled up herself. “Do we all have to do that?” Sango asked from the bottom.

“No,” Kagome answered. “I’ll catch his attention and get him to pull you guys up.”

“Kagome?” Inuyasha asked.

“What is your deal?” she asked him. “Why aren’t you-?” She stopped speaking when she finally pulled herself over the edge of the well and saw what lay around them. The sky was now purple, and her house was in ruin. Actually, all the houses around them were in ruin. It looked as if there had been a nuclear war in her absence. She blinked, starting to lose her hold on the top of the well.

Inuyasha looked at her and noticed this. He grabbed her arms and pulled her up.

He and Kagome worked together to pull Sango, Miroku, and Shippo from the well. The gang looked around at the devastated world around them. “Kagome, I don’t remember your time looking quite like this,” Sango told her friend.

“Feh,” Inuyasha replied, dumbstruck. “I don’t remember her time looking anything like this!”

All of a sudden, a Jeep Wrangler pulled up beside them, and two very familiar people were sitting in it. A woman who looked just like Kagome, only tougher, sat in the passenger seat as a man who looked just like Inuyasha but with shorter hair drove. The woman stood in the vehicle and called to them, “Hurry up and get in! We don’t have much time!”

Kirara leaped from Sango’s arms and jumped into the back of the Jeep. Sango shrugged. “Kirara seems to think this is urgent. Let’s go.”

They all piled in, and not a moment too soon; as soon as the Jeep was on the move again, things began to chase them. They appeared to be people, men and women, but they flew with angel-like white, feathered wings.

“Shit,” the woman sitting in the front passenger seat muttered before standing and pulling out her crossbow. She strung it back tight, aimed at one of the winged people, and fired. The arrow glowed purple, much like Kagome’s did, and it struck the bird-person in the chest. It let out a shriek of pain and fell to the dusty road behind them. The man looked at their passengers in the backseats through the rearview mirror. “They’re evolved bird demons. Naraku sent them to greet you to the year 2256,” he told them.
