An alarm blaring woke Kouga from a sound sleep. He reached over and slapped his hand on the buzzer button to shut off the infernal racket, but nothing happened. He opened his eyes when the noise didn't stop and looked at the LED readout. "3:20? What the hell’s going on?" It was at this time he realized it wasn't his alarm clock waking him for his first class of the day, but the fire alarm on his floor at the dormitory. Throwing back his blanket, he jumped out of bed, ran to the door and flung it open. Several males were scrambling in the halls. Someone was screaming something about a fire on another floor and everyone had to get out of the building. Grabbing a pair of jeans that had been thrown over a nearby chair, Kouga quickly put them on, hopping on one leg then the other, as he left his private room and headed for the stairwell. Young men of various heights and weights were jamming through the door, pushing and shoving everyone in their panic to get down the stairs and outside. There was a faint smell of smoke in the stairwell as Kouga finally got into the narrow passageway and preceded down the metal stairway, two steps at a time. It took barely a minute to maneuver down the five flights of stairs from his dorm floor to the lowest level and out into the cold night air. Numerous fire trucks were parked just outside the building, and men in heavy-duty coats and helmets directed everyone away from the doorway.

A couple hundred young men were herded to the parking lot outside the fifteen story building. All eyes turned up towards the eleventh floor, where flames could be seen shooting out of a dorm window. There was a small explosion and black smoke billowed out several other windows from rooms adjacent to the one that was on fire. Glass and debris spewed out the side of the building and rained down on the gathered men, causing more panic. Everyone scattered, running as far from the blazing inferno that now engulfed the upper part of the building.

Kouga followed the pack of students that had just evacuated the university's smaller male dorm and now huddled to keep warm. He watched in amazement as the towering building turned into a bright torch and lit up the night sky. Fire fighters at ground level poised water hoses towards the lower half of the building, as men from laddered trucks rose in the air manning similar hoses that were aimed directly into the flaming rooms.

When the fire was finally out, it was some three hours later. Kouga and the rest of the students stood gasping at the burned out shell of the building, some virtually naked having had no time to grab anything to cover them before fleeing the dormitory. Kouga was one of the fortunate ones; at least he had his jeans on. But without a shirt or shoes, the forty degree temperatures were making him shiver. He brought his frigid hands close to his mouth and blew on them, hoping his breath could warm them just a bit. From out of nowhere, he was suddenly covered by a blanket and two strong arms wrapped themselves around the young man.

"Come on, Kouga, let's get out of here and get inside." He turned around to find one of his chemistry lab partners standing there, trying to help him get warm.

The men from the next dorm over had been watching the events unfold. When they were finally permitted to leave their own building; they thoughtfully all grabbed blankets and coats to take to their classmates that had been so unceremoniously ousted into the cold night. Bankotsu knew a lot of the guys in the neighboring dormitory and just hoped none of them was injured in the fire. He had spotted Kouga easily, his signature ponytail perched high atop his raven colored hair. That’s who he honed in on to help.

Kouga wrapped the blanket tightly around his back and chest and allowed Bankotsu to lead him to the warmth of his dorm. Once inside, resident advisors ushered Kouga and the other displaced students into the cafeteria where hot coffee and tea was waiting. He grabbed an offered cup of coffee and headed over to an empty table and sat down. He watched as all the men he knew, and even more he didn’t know that had occupied his dorm building, filed into the spacious room.

When the last of the displaced men had come in and gotten something to warm their insides, one of his dormitory resident advisors got on a table. Waving his hands and shouting for everyone to settle down, he got the masses to be quiet. “Okay, guys, here’s the deal. The fire marshal says that the dorm is a complete loss. It’s not safe for anyone to go back in there, not even to get clothes. For now, everyone is going to be staying in this dorm.”

There were rumbles and grumbles from both sets of dormitory men. Kouga was one of the most vocal.”Hey, do you mean we have to share a room with these guys? What about those of us that had private rooms?” Kouga was clearly upset at the prospect of sharing quarters with anyone else. As a prince in his own lands, he was used to his private room, with private kitchen and bath. The idea of sharing with just anyone was an intolerable concept for him. Several of the other displaced students were mouthing off similar comments. It seemed that the dormitory that caught fire was one used to segregate the rich and affluent from the everyday students. Most of the rooms there were private. Spoiled rich kids didn’t want to share what they had, and Kouga was no exception to that.

The men from the larger dorm were not happy because they already had three or four to a room, and now they were going to be more crowded than before. Add in the fact that all these new men were going to be using the limited showers on each floor, and it made for a lot of discord. Someone shouted, “They gonna get to choose their own rooms and push us out, or they gonna learn to share like the rest of us?” Slurs about rich boys versus poor middle class boys abounded, and a couple of fist fights broke out as the two sets of men squared off for supremacy in the one remaining male dorm.

A high-pitched squeal echoed throughout the cafeteria, as one of the resident advisors took a microphone and began to talk. “Listen up, everyone. As of tonight, there is one dorm for all the men, and this is it. We all will have to make some accommodations for squeezing the extra people in this dorm, until a new place is found. So, get over yourselves! Everyone here is a university student, and you are expected to act as such. We don’t want to hear anymore crap about rich kids and poor kids. As for doubling up on some of the rooms, we should have enough space here to make everyone comfortable. It’s a temporary situation. Live with it!”

No one was happy, but that was just the way things were going to be. Kouga looked around at the mix of students in the cafeteria. Had he not known some from his classes the last two years, he really wouldn’t have been able to tell upper class from lower class. He also knew that being a senior and a member of a royal family; he would be expected to be a leader. Taking a deep breath, he got up, tossed the blanket off his shoulders and jumped on a table. “Quiet down, everyone and listen. Most of you know me, I’m Prince Kouga. If I can live under these conditions for the time being, all of you can too. We all know that it won’t take too long to find suitable housing for those of us that came from over there (he pointed towards their burned dormitory). So, suck it up and do as you’re told.”

Bankotsu wanted to puke. Here he had gone to the trouble to try and help a ‘friend’ and found out that he was nothing but a stuck-up, snooty prick. “Live under these conditions, Kouga? What kind of conditions are you talking about? You mean you have to share a room with us peons until your snooty parents can make enough noise to get you moved to a private hotel or something?”

Kouga jumped off the table and stood before Bankotsu. He knew he stuck is royal foot in his mouth this time. Bankotsu was right to call him on it. “That’s not what I meant. It’s just that most of us aren’t used to sharing rooms with anyone and your dorm is kind of crowded already. I mean, sharing a room with three other guys is bad enough, but now it’s going to be more like five other guys.” He was trying to apologize but the more he spoke the worse it sounded. He finally gave up trying. “Look, can we just drop it. It’s been a rough night and I’m beat. I just want to get a shower and get some sleep.”

Bankotsu did understand what he meant and knew that it was going to be difficult. Add on that none of the guys from the other dorm even had clothes and it was going to be worse than they imagined. He took a deep breath and let it out with a sigh. “Tell you what. I only have two roommates now, since Jakotsu dropped out this semester, why don’t you take his bed. That way, you won’t get put somewhere else and be forced to sleep on a cot. You can even borrow some of my clothes until you can go shopping for new stuff. We’re about the same size.”

Kouga hadn’t thought about clothes. The fact finally struck him that he was technically homeless here at the university, and had to rely on the goodness of others. He dug into his jeans and sighed as he pulled out his wallet. At least he had some money and his credit cards so clothes weren’t going to be an issue for too long. Still, he looked around at the others from his dorm and realized that most of them weren’t so lucky. Realizing how fortunate he was to have gotten out of the fiery building unharmed, he turned his azure eyes to his friend and smiled. “Thanks, I’ll take you up on the offer. But, it’s only until they decide where they’re going to put us later. Deal?”

Bankotsu stared at Kouga’s blue eyes, seeing genuine gratitude. He may have sounded like a prick when he was up on the table, but he thought now he understood where the wolf prince was coming from. “Ok, it’s a deal. Now, let’s get upstairs before everyone gets a similar idea. I bet you could use a hot shower, and once all your friends over there get going, there won’t be much privacy.”

Kouga and Bankotsu slipped out the back way from the crowded cafeteria and ran up the stairwell to the eighth floor. The dorm itself looked similar to his, only the rooms were a bit larger. As he strolled past a few open doors, he got a real idea of how ‘the other half’ lived. Whereas his room was a bit smaller, there was only one bed, desk, chair and dresser. In these rooms, there were two sets of bunk beds; two tables with one chair each and four smaller chests of drawers. There were also four lockers that stood against a wall that would have held a full closet for Kouga. They looked a little cramped, but not as bad as he expected.

Bankotsu’s room was at the end of the hall in a corner. Surprisingly, that room was a bit larger than the others they had passed. Or maybe it just seemed that way because there were windows on two walls overlooking the main campus. The same beds, tables, chairs and chests were here, but there was a set of double closets where most had lockers. This added to the effect of more space to the room.

Bankotsu was right, leaving when they did afforded them a little privacy. So far they were the only ones to return to this floor of the dorm. Kouga stood in the middle of Bankotsu’s room as his friend opened a closet and reached high on a shelf, taking a towel and washcloth down. He handed both to Kouga. Then he grabbed a hanger which had a black kimono dangling precariously from it. That too was handed to the wolf prince. After getting some necessities like soap, shampoo and the like, he showed Kouga where the communal shower room was.

It was vast; twenty men could shower at one time in the curtained-off stalls that formed a pie-shaped ring in the middle of the room. There was a row of six sinks along two adjacent mirrored walls. A third wall had six urinals mounted, and the last wall had stalls, behind which were regular commodes. Kouga let out a slight groan at the sight of the shower/bath room. He was used to a private bath with a real tub that also had a shower built in, his own sink and a toilet he didn’t have to share with anyone. This was culture shock to the young royal.

Bankotsu saw the pallor on the young prince’s face as he scanned the common room. He smiled as he thought that this was going to be a first for the wolf demon. Patting him on the back, he said, “Come on, I’ll take you to the other side, that way, no one can see you when they come in here. That’s about as much privacy as I can give you.” He ushered Kouga around the circle of curtains, showed him how to adjust the water to the proper temperature and let him have his privacy.

Kouga was grateful to his friend. He realized he sounded like a pompous ass earlier, belittling he men who resided in his dormitory, The hot water running over his head and down his back was heavenly. He removed the leather binding on his ponytail and let his hair fall over his shoulders. Taking the bottle of shampoo Bankotsu had given him he poured a liberal amount in one hand, worked up lather, then washed his raven hair. Although it wasn’t his usual custom blend, it didn’t smell bad. After rinsing the shampoo out, he applied a smaller amount of conditioner to his hair, working out all the tangles as he rinsed it clear. The soap was a common brand found in most stores, and although it didn’t smell too great, it did do its job getting the body clean. When he was finally shampooed and washed, he turned off the water. Grabbing his towel, he quickly dried his body then wrapped the towel around his long hair so it wouldn’t drip on the black kimono that he was now putting on.

Feeling totally refreshed, he padded barefoot back to Bankotsu’s room where he was greeted by his two new roommates. He recognized one as a young dog demon, InuYasha was his name. The other was an unfamiliar human, tall and thin. The unfamiliar man extended his hand to Kouga and smiled. “Hi, I’m Miroku. Welcome to our little den of iniquity.”

Kouga shot a look to Bankotsu that asked, ‘what the hell;” to which Bankotsu just rolled his eyes and started laughing. “”Miroku, don’t scare him off already. You have no idea what an effort it was to get him to come here to begin with.” He put his hand on Kouga’s shoulder and led him to the lower bunk on the far side of the room. “Don’t mind him; he’s our resident sexual pervert. Anything in a skirt is fair game for him. Here, you take the bottom bunk, I got the top. Beggars can’t be choosers, at least not this morning. After you get some sleep, we’ll discuss if you want to switch with me or not.”

Kouga was just grateful for a bed to lie on and try and put the excitement of the night behind him. He knew he wasn’t going to make his classes today, he was just too exhausted. As soon as his head hit the white cotton pillow case, he fell asleep. It was going to be a big adjustment living here, but somehow he would make it work out.
