Renewed

The days passed slowly. He hadn’t even had the strength to eat. All he’d known: his love, his life, his mate. Dead. He winced as another wave of depressing pain flushed his already weakened body. He tried to take a deep breath to calm himself but found that the air stuck in his lungs, making his body tremor at the motion.

He crawled from the mud hole he had fallen into days ago and reached out to the familiar wood. She was gone. Forever. He hugged his body closer to the old well and sobbed. He had watched her die and couldn’t save her. This world was different than her own; here, there weren’t medical techniques and equipment to save her life. And there was no way to get her to her own world.

So, as their child was taking its first breath in the world, Kagome was taking her last. He brushed his face against the weathered wood once more and then put his back to it, ignoring the crick and desire to stretch.

He hadn’t even seen their child and did not know the gender. It would remain in the care of his two traveling companions until seen fit otherwise. As soon as his love, his life, his world, his mate went limp in his arms, never to spread her joy laughter again, all meaning and resolve had left his body. He didn’t even think of his child when he hugged her lifeless body for hours. Only did he leave when they had pried her from his arms and started talks of a burial. He fled from the conversation and hadn’t been near another soul since.

A voice in his head emerged on the eve of the fifth day after Kagome’s passing. He tilted his head up and flicked his ears, trying to source the voice, incase he wasn’t just imagining it. When his senses picked up no other life forms, he resolved to huddling against the well again.

“Go to your child,” the voice was saying to him. “It will ease your pain.”

It was a woman’s voice. A familiar woman’s voice.

“Kagome?” he puzzled, hoping she would answer.

“Go to your child,” it said again.

“Please, come back to me,” he cried out, throwing his arms into the air and hoping against hope that she would somehow drift down from the heavens into his waiting arms.

“It will ease your pain,” it said.

“How can it ease my pain?” he yelled to the sky. “You’re gone. I have no reason to live. Please, just come back to me.”

“Go to your child, Inuyasha,” it said.

“I need you, Kagome!” he screamed. He broke down into another fit of tears and clutched the well.

The voice did not return.

The sudden desire to see his baby caused him to stir and leap into the air, toward the village where it was being kept. He bounded toward the hut and slid to a halt in front of the thatch door. He swept it aside and startled Sango, the wet nurse and best friend of his lost love. She gasped at his entrance, quickly covering the babe in the garb of clothing.

“Give me my pup,” he growled, unintentionally. He cleared his throat and said “please” in a softer tone. Sango smiled and handed over the package in her arms, replacing it with one of her own. She waited until Inuyasha had the baby situated in his grasp before walking from the hut to feed her whiney child.

Inuyasha stared at the bundle. All that was visible was a lock of jet black hair and two evenly set, honey-colored eyes. He pulled back the cloth and looked down at his baby. Her head and shoulders fit perfectly in his large, masculine hands. Her little arms and legs curled protectively to her body at the sudden exposure to chilly air. Inuyasha put out a finger to her hand; she wrapped five clawed fingers around it and squeezed. He marveled at the tiny beauty, whose whole hand fit above the top knuckle of his index finger.

“I love you,” he cooed, falling for her instantly. He pulled his finger from her grasp and ran it across the top of her head. Two miniature ears, matching to the ebony hair, fluffed up and flicked around. “I will never leave you,” he said, staring into her eyes.

His companion, Miroku, came into the hut, a surprised look adorning his handsome features.

“Does our beauty have a name?” he asked, looking down at the child.

“I suppose Goddess would not be an appropriate name,” Inuyasha pondered aloud.

“She is quite a gem, isn’t she?” Miroku smiled.

“Gem? That’s it; I’ll call her Jade.”

“A fine name, indeed.”

“Jade, my love, I will protect you until my dying breath. Not a day will pass that I’m not with you.”

Miroku chuckled at his friend. He’d only seen the half demon act in such a manner when he was dealing with the baby’s mother. Inuyasha wasn’t one to just dish out feelings. He was always rash and hard-headed. To see him so affectionate toward another being was somewhat new. Of course, he had loved Kagome with his whole heart, but she was different. She was the first person to connect with him on a level that none other could reach. She was the first person to put her heart on the line for him, over and over again, just going on hope and faith.

Eventually, Inuyasha opened up to her. After much convincing on his part, Miroku managed to get him to tell Kagome how he felt. He remembered the way Inuyasha led her away from the campfire and up to a cliff, overlooking a beautiful meadow. The setting was perfect. He stood before her and asked her to be his mate. She squealed a yes and jumped into his arms, sending them both to the ground. They hadn’t separated since then, that is, until Kagome passed.

Miroku sighed when the memories of that day came rushing back. Kagome had gone into labor as they were traveling to the Slayer’s village.
