Power at Hand

Disclaimer: I don’t own the Inu Yasha series.

AN: Adding to my growing list of stories that have yet to be completed. ^^; Since there didn’t seem to be any stories yet in the Taisho/Kagome slot, I decided to add one and hope that more will follow. And because he technically needs a name and the one usually used on his fanfics is Sugimi, Taisho will be called such, if nothing more than to prevent confusion. And I’m really too lazy to think of other names. ^^;;;

Chapter I: Rebirth

The blood lust filtered through his veins as the crimson-eyed hanyou stalked along the dusty cave. Bones littered the ground, brittle from years having passed. His heavy boot stepped on a skull, effectively crushing the remains of a long forgotten demon. Morally, he had long broken many laws of the heart and mind, from relinquishing a lover’s life, to destroying villages for fun. Desecrating a grave seemed to be one of the least of his crimes. His mission was clear and his plan was perfect as his gaze lifted onto the form of a long dead dog demon: a demon lord to be precise, once being an esteemed general and one of the most powerful and feared demons to have ever walked the Japanese lands.

The great, Inu no Taisho lifelessly stared back at the evil hanyou, hollowed out and adorning no more than his armour. Naraku lifted his hand, flicking several jewel shards into the bones of the deceased dog general and watched as an eerie pale blue light surrounded the inu’s remains. A stream of muscle tissue and veins punctured out of the skeleton, surrounding each bone with life giving blood. Skin burst forth afterwards, and fur to top it off. Crimson eyes wearily rolled about, the taiyoukai’s dormant mind trying to grasp where he was and what was happening to him. He felt a searing pain before a sense of numbness followed, reminding him of the needle prickling feeling after cutting off your circulation to a limb. The surge of power pulsed through all of Japan, heralding something great in it’s wake.

Looking down lazily, the dog general spotted Naraku standing in his tomb with a victorious smirk. The red glow of the dog demon’s aura coming to life engulfed the once deceased form, transforming the dog general into his more humanoid form. Sugimi stood tall, proud, yet something was different. His golden eyes shifted towards his arms, which would not move at his command. His gaze shifted towards Naraku questioningly, meaning to ask the hanyou what all this was about, but his voice abandoned him. An evil chuckle met his perfectly pointed ears, causing him to cringe inwardly at the sound.

“My dear dog general….Sugimi, am I correct? Of course I am, you needn’t answer even if you could. But how rude of me, allow me to introduce myself. I am Naraku, your new master…”

Sugimi’s eyes narrowed dangerously as his muscles tightened, straining to move against the invisible force that held him still. His struggled didn’t go unnoticed to the evil before him as a crimson gaze found his golden one.

“Don’t waste your strength struggling, my slave. There is no use. You see, you have a jewel shard in each of your limbs, and for that, you are now my puppet. I have given you back the gift of life, and in return, you shall help me take the lives of your sons.”

Sugimi schooled his face into an emotionless mask, having had centuries to perfect the skill. Inside he was raging, his inner beast willing his body to move forward, to destroy the fool who dares to endanger his pups. He had died once for his young, he would do it again if he had to.

“Ah…I’m sure you remember the jewel. The Shikon no Tama: The Jewel of Four Souls. Yes, you remember it well, its creation, had probably seen its destruction in your suspended spiritual outline. It was the downfall of your youngest son 50 years ago, the cause of your rebirth now, and will be the end of the Taisho line all too soon.”

Naraku turned to walk away, having had enough of the foul smell of death and the humidity of the tomb. With a wave of his hand, Sugimi’s legs started forward, carrying his body to follow the half-breed out of his own grave.

Sesshomaru was pacing through his lands when a pulse shook the ground beneath him. He quirking a brow at the miniature earthquake as it stopped, feeling as Japan trembled with a foreign power. The thought unnerved him, though he’d never admit it. The only time he had ever felt such power was when his father was alive and had unleashed the full force of his fury.

Inuyasha lead his rag-tag group through an olde deer trail, his ears swiveling about as he ignored the needless chatter behind him. Kagome and Sango were giggling over the attention of some men from the previous village they had visited. Inuyasha and Miroku had been none too happy with the events, but after a good sitting and an encounter with the Hiraikotsu, the men decided to let well enough alone. Shippo happily ate at his treats of pocky and lolly pops that Kagome had retrieved for him from her time when the ground shook with an ominous calling. The group exchanged looks, Inuyasha voicing his thoughts first.

“What the hell was that?”

Miroku frowned softly, looking in the direction it seemed to have been coming from.

“I have no idea, Inuyasha, but whatever it is, it can not be good.”

The demon slayer looked over at the monk, question in her eyes.

“I didn’t sense any familiar auras, did you, Miroku?”

“No, Lady Sango, I didn’t. And that’s what troubles me. I wonder if whoever that was decides to be a friend or an enemy.”

Sugimi sat in the dank cell that was his new abode. Looking around at the walls of the dungeon, the former demon lord snorted, now free to Naraku’s binding spell, and knowing even if he did escape, the moment Naraku had him in his grasp, his sons would be killed by his own claws. Sighing softly, Sugimi took another look around the cell, contemplating his options. He had only recently been revived, and had still yet to regain much of his strength. He snorted at the half-breed’s folly, the mere thought that Naraku assumed to have ultimate power over him through the jewel shards. For now, Naraku, you may keep your false sense of security, but when I have gained enough strength, you will die by my hands for threatening my pups…I just hope I can gain enough power to escape before he uses me against them…

His thoughts were interrupted, as a demoness offered him a meager meal, her crimson eyes matching her master’s almost completely. His golden eyes met hers, watching as she nervously opened her fan only to snap it shut again. He allowed a smirk to play on his lips, the thought that even in his weakened state he could elicit fright in an unknown enemy.

Naraku viewed through Kanna’s mirror the Taisho’s sons. His malicious gaze followed Inuyasha’s group as they wondered about nervously, having obviously felt the power surge. With a wave of his hand the mirror showed him Sesshomaru being much in the same state. Much to Naraku’s amusement, not a one of the two groups had figured out just whose power had ignited.

“And so the games begin…”

Inuyasha was rushing the group a little faster than normal. He wanted to find safety and soon, demanding that they head to the mountains soon. The group oblivious to the dangers that awaited them outdoors, followed, not sure what to think of their companions need to be near the caves. Sango, looking over at Kagome’s contemplative expression, nudged her friend gently.

“Hey, what’s on your mind? Do you know why Inuyasha is acting the way he is?”

Kagome thought for a moment longer and shrugged.

“I don’t know. I read somewhere that dogs tend to act weird when something bad is about to happen. Like a sixth sense. I wasn’t sure if it was the same for dog demons.”

Sango smiled softly and shook her head.

“Perhaps. I can’t say you’re wrong because usually Kirara senses things long before I would. But why would Inuyasha lead us to the mountains where it’s a few days away?”

Kagome shrugged, not knowing the answer herself. After arguing with her inner self for a few minutes, she finally decided to ask Inuyasha just what he was after. Much to her disappointment, the only answer she got from him was a “Feh” and a “We need to get there. There’s something wrong there.” Rolling her eyes, she glanced suspiciously at her half-bred friend, wondering just who he was and what he did with the real Inuyasha.

Sugimi lulled himself into a meditative state, willing his body to heal after centuries of lack of use. He felt his muscles tighten at the strain, his aura having all but died out after the initial power pulse generated from his rebirth. He sighed dejectedly at his sever weakened state, once more trying to regain his center and rejuvenate his strength. The food wasn’t much, but it was a start to his inevitable recovery.

AN: I know the chapter is short, but I’m hoping it started the story off nicely.
