CHAPTER ONE
“Feh, this place stinks. Think I’ll go see about this demon.” Inuyasha slung the fang over his shoulder in a weak posture. He was going to be pissed if Kagome tried to talk him into sticking around. This place reeked of dying people and illness. If he had to watch one more villager spill their stomach he was going to join them. Nursing the wounded and ailing wasn’t his thing. Not like Kagome or Miroku who were busy hustling to see to the needy. “Why don’t you tell me just where the hell I can find this demon that’s causing the plague. Get rid of him, problem solved.”
“Well that’s a nice attitude to have.” Sango picked up the dirty rags and could almost feel for the hanyou. The smell had to be really strong with his nose. Another person started gagging and puking up their broth along with a small amount of blood. “Perhaps you have a point, we should hunt down the one causing it before any more lives are lost from it. Will you two be okay by yourself? This shouldn’t take us long.” Sango smiled down at the miko wiping the vomit from an elderly female’s chin. Kagome’s pallor had turned stark white but the girl didn’t pause in her ministrations. Those two were best suited to helping the sickly. She’d go with Inuyasha to destroy the demon causing it. There probably wasn’t much use for her, the hanyou could kill it on his own. It would just be nice to get away from the stench of the dying.
“We’ll be fine.” Kagome was sure she’d live but her stomach was hating her. The smell was horrible and she’d never be able to get it out her nostrils. The woman she was hand bathing decided she’d make a good toilet. Bile and water came up to spray on her hands and arms. “Gross,” bile rose in her stomach from the need to vomit as well. The old woman apologized and looked sorry for the mishap. “You two go ahead and make it quick.” Please, make it quick because she didn’t think she could hold out for much longer. What she needed was a bath and to get away from the strong smell of shit and vomit. The young boy laying in the closest bedding groaned about his tummy aching.
“Yes, do go and relieve the village of this downfall.” Miroku was trying to keep his cool and not holler for them to get their asses moving. He didn’t want to be nursing sick people all evening. He was just lucky he wasn’t wanting to puke like the miko. He had a stronger stomach and could take most of it. Though hearing the little boy start to lose control of his bowels had him frowning. Inuyasha took that as his cue and headed out the door with the information on how to find the demon. The smell of body secretions penetrated the air around them. The old woman sniffed the aroma once and the hurling began anew. This time Kagome managed to move back in time. “Do you think there is anything we can make them to help with the illness?”
Kagome tried to think of what they could make for the poor villagers. She knew of a tea that was supposed to help with vomiting but this was a plaque caused by a demon. Would the herbal tea Kaede showed her to make help these people? She didn’t want to sleep with the scent of illness on her. She hadn’t been expecting to end her day this way. She’d woken up in high hopes after last night. They’d made camp early due to the weather looking to turn bad. She’d offered to go with Inuyasha to collect some fire wood while Sango got the water boiling for dinner. While collecting she’d accidently tripped over a small rock. The few sticks she’d been holding had tumbled to the ground carelessly but Inuyasha had caught her in his arms before she could meet the same fate. The strong arms had pulled her close in a tight embrace. No words had been spoken between them. She knew he was still grieving over the final death of Kikyo. She’d give him the time needed, if it came to that. She wasn’t sure what it meant for them. Being there for him was all that mattered. “I can try to make them some herbal tea and see if it helps.”
“Yes, let’s try that. What do you think you’ll need?” Miroku looked around for the kitsune but Shippou was nowhere to be found. Probably ran off with Inuyasha and the others to get out of helping. Looked like he was stuck with the miko. He’d been hoping to spend this evening convincing Sango into a little cuddling. If they were to marry he saw no reason as to why they had to continue being indifferent. He knew she wouldn’t consent to doing anything before the wedding but some nights he wanted to be close to someone. As strong and independent as he was, he got lonely at times. Having her so close but far away could be tedious. He didn’t fail to notice that while he tried to be allowed the smallest amount of affection from his intended and was denied, Kagome was also doing the same. She’d willingly let the hanyou show her the smallest amount of attention. They were both longing to be with someone that was holding back.
“The herbs I’ll be needing should be easily found in the forest. I’ll need a bit to collect them though.” She turned to the elder who had come towards them. “There’s not much else we can do until Inuyasha kills the one behind this but I can probably make something to ease their suffering. Can you have one of the other women take over while we go search for what I’ll need?” Kagome made sure to add the houshi in her plans. He probably could use a breath of fresh air also. A small break from tending to the sick. She also wanted to wash this horrid smell from her skin. How could she get Inuyasha near her when she stank of puke?
Miroku took her elbow to escort her out into the fresh air. This was going to end a shitty week for them. There was no sign of Naraku anywhere or Kohaku. Sango was concerned over where her little brother was. There was a chance he was still with Sesshoumaru but could they be certain? The boy carried the last shard still embedded in his back. Naraku obviously hadn’t gotten it yet or the evil bastard would have put in an appearance. That one shard was all that was left from keeping Naraku from completing the bauble. There was no doubt that fact was worrying his intended. Kohaku’s life was in constant danger from many. They had no idea where to find him either or the great lord. He knew the miko also missed her family that was on the other side of the well. Things had to get better, they couldn’t get much worse.
“Ewww, I need to scrub this smell off of me. How long do you think it’ll take them to find the demon? It can’t be far right if it’s affecting the village.” Kagome moved a strand of hair from her face. She needed to seriously bathe and get some sleep. She eyed the houshi walking beside her. At least she wasn’t alone in this since Sango and Inuyasha had decided to skip out on them. Where was Shippou? She grumbled about being abandoned after all. Even the kit had fled from the smell.
“It all depends on how powerful the demon is. If it’s a weak one then he’ll have to be close. The village elder said something about a flock of strange colored birds. That could mean anything but Inuyasha and Sango should find it. We just have to do what we can until then. If it’s a crow then it could be safely some distance away. Their kind causes disease and death, wait for the victims to die then come back to feast on the carnage. Ah, I believe the brook is that way. We can let you wash up a little and then search for these herbs.” Miroku was almost certain they were dealing with some manner of crow from the sounds of it. Not much of a problem for their friends. What would take time is finding the creature’s nest.
“Hope it’s not far. I don’t want to sound horrible but I’m already tired of cleaning up puke.” Kagome heard the water before she saw it. It would feel wonderful to get cleaned up. She was probably wasting her time because she’d get barfed on as soon as she went back. There was little chance Inuyasha will have found the demon and slain it in such short a time. She should take her time but it would be wrong. The most extra time she’d give herself would be to get clean and a sip of the cool water. “Did you notice whether or not Shippou went with them?”
“My assumption: he’s with Sango and Kirara. He wouldn’t have cared for the smell either. The last time I saw him he was sitting on the outskirts of the village with Kirara. Let’s get refreshed then head to search for the herbs.” He walked up to the water’s edge and scanned the area. Nothing looked out of place, hard to believe that the village was suffering so. He smiled as Kagome knelt down to begin washing her hands off the best she could. His eyes narrowed at the red marks on the miko’s hands. Had one of the patients grabbed her. The arms were dipped to her elbows to remove the rest of the scent.
Kagome moaned suddenly feeling lightheaded. Was she getting sick as well? No, Miroku had said her miko powers would protect her from contacting it. She cupped a small amount of water from the stream. It felt wonderful going down her throat. “Damn, am I thirsty. What are you doing Miroku?” She looked up to see what the houshi was doing. His face was in a taut line of concentration. Was something near? She couldn’t sense anything. “Miroku?”
“Get up Kagome,” He tensed feeling the evil aura all around them. It came so sudden, but from where? He couldn’t exactly say where it was coming from. As if from right next to them. A soft moan came from the miko followed by an audible thump. “Kagome?!” he reached down for the fallen girl. Was she getting ill as well? She was still breathing but very shallow, an unnatural sleep. “Who’s there?” He kept one hand on her prone form, trying to wake her. This couldn’t be good and he was sure Inuyasha and the others were nowhere near to assist if it was needed. Laughter came from behind him; the water! Pain erupted across his chin, the blow knocked him back. The force was enough to put him on his ass. Dizziness filled his brain but he managed to look up to see the demon emerge from the water. A dragon? Spots appeared before his eyes as it shifted into it’s humanoid form. “Kagome?”
Tyoshi scanned the area searching for any signs of the inu-hanyou. Good, the man had taken the bait leaving the girl behind. Just as Naraku had said it would happen. He hadn’t been expecting the houshi but that wasn’t a setback. His eyes took in the sleeping miko, her breath coming in shallow pants. Not as nearly as pleasing as Kikyo but would do. She’d work just as well and so would the houshi. They’d give some form of entertainment while he used them to destroy the hanyou. All this trouble for his half of the jewel. He shrugged knowing it needed to be done. He’d play and do as Naraku asked. As soon as he killed this Inuyasha like Naraku wanted, he’d get his half. With the power of that half he’d be strong enough to kill his true nemesis, Naraku.
Kagome was sure a school bus had taken revenge and turned her into road kill. Her head was throbbing, her mouth was dry, her body felt like lead and she really had to pee. Where was she? Why was she so groggy? Had someone slipped her some sake in her tea? This had to be a hangover of the worst kind. What had Miroku done, tried to drown her at the stream? She moved her jaw trying to get some moisture in her dry mouth, that wasn’t working. Something cold and hard was keeping her wrist to the floor. Wait, she couldn’t move. Her eyes peeled open making the grit sting and form tears.
“Are you awake Kagome?” Miroku shifted his position so he could see the girl’s face. He’d woken up over an hour ago and had surveyed their surroundings. He’d have to think of it as their jail. “How do you feel? Oh, don’t bother to move. Your hands and ankles are bound to the floor by chains. You might be able to sit up at an angle but that is all.” The room was only about eight feet high, the size of Kaede’s hut at best. “Not sure why they have us chained when there is no need. We can’t escape.”
“What? Where are we?” Confusion filled her seeing the small room that was practically bare. The chains holding them and a small blanket was the only thing on the floor. There was no pit for a fire or a door, how the hell did they get in here? The last thing she remembered was stopping at the stream to wash up. Had someone taken them? But why? They didn’t have any jewel shards on their person. It couldn’t be Naraku, no he’d just kill them and get it done and over with. She was really starting to worry at the prospect of who might have bothered to kidnap them. “Nice, and I really got to pee.”
“We have bigger worries than that I’m afraid. Along with no exit, there is a barrier around this place. If I am correct it is to keep anything human out. Which means we are also trapped inside. Need I point out that any hope of rescue is slim at best. If Sango or Inuyasha can’t get in we may be stuck down here for a while.” Miroku tugged on the chain without any avail. They were stuck as they were until someone came to relieve them. Whomever had kidnaped them would surely come back at some point. “Let’s try to be patient.”
“That’s easy for you to say you don’t have to pee.” She squirmed in the restraints knowing that if she wasn’t released soon she’d have an accident. Why bother chaining them up if they couldn’t get out? As if sensing her needs the chains snapped open. “Huh?” It was too good to be true, but she moved away from them hastily. Another click and Miroku was also free. “I get to use it first, turn your head.” She saw the small bowl next to the blanket. It felt strange but she went over to the bowl and squatted. It was better than pissing on herself. “Don’t you dare look.”
It took a few seconds but her bladder was hurting so it overrode her mortification that he could still hear her urinating. “Oh, I feel better.” She wished she had some paper but had to drip dry. With an empty bladder she moved away from the bowl. “Okay, you can go if you want.” She went where he’d just vacated to look at the opposite wall. The sound of trickling penetrated the empty room. Not like she could ask him to keep holding it so she wouldn’t have to hear. Who had taken them? How could the person come back if there was no door? Well, they had gotten them in someway. “How do you think we get out?”
“You don’t,” Tyoshi spoke as he entered the room. The portal opened up long enough to let him and his two men inside. He smirked seeing the houshi tense at his presence. The miko was as Naraku had said, she was very inexperienced. If it had been Kikyo the bitch would know what kind of trouble she was in. “Hn, so you are as good as he said you were houshi. You’d have to be to have survived so long. Don’t even think about using your cursed hand upon us, it won’t work. The barrier around my castle keeps anything with a human ki out. Or in your case in. Your wind tunnel will not open as long as you are on my estate. Same goes for you miko, you are powerless while here.”
“I see and do you mind telling us why you have taken us?” Miroku recognized the dragon from the stream. It was the same man but what did he want with them? The long grey hair flowed behind the man to be caught in a tight ribbon near his ass. Soft features gazed at Kagome in indifference. What was the man thinking? Black eyes squinted in concentration before turning to him. This male was so pretty he might have mistaken him for a female if not for the attire. The robe exposed half a very masculine chest, the flowing robes danced around his feet as he strolled towards Kagome.
“Very nice,” Tyoshi reached out to grasp the girl’s chin between his fingers. Dark blue eyes shot daggers at him, amusing. She would fight if she thought she had a chance. He didn’t mind women that had spirit, not so long as they knew their rightful place. This one obviously didn’t. He gave her an innocent smile making her stiffen. There was no time for her to brace herself. He brought his free hand up then back down. It cracked against the side of her face hard enough to pull her chin from his grasp. The girl fell to her knees, “Don’t look at me like that.”
Kagome grabbed her face, feeling the searing heat in her cheek. Her tongue picked up the fresh coppery taste of blood. The pink muscle jerked feeling a hard surface brushing along it’s edge. She spit in her hand revealing two white tiny objects. Rage filled her seeing two of her teeth resting in her palm. Holes in the side were oozing blood making her want to gag at the taste. “Owe,” her tongue touched where they’d been. The area was sore and she knew she was lucky she hadn’t lost more. Swearing got her attention to her left. Miroku was being held by two very large green demons. Were they about to die?
“Now, that I have your attention.” Tyoshi leaned down to squat in front of the girl. “You will do as I say. I have made a small pact with Naraku. Naturally, it isn’t to kill you but don’t think for a second that I will not tear out your heart and eat it as you watch. My goal is the death of the one called Inuyasha. You two are bait, nothing more. Give me no reason to kill you and I won’t. As soon as I destroy the hanyou I will release you. That is if you give me no cause to slay you in a gruesome manner. Of course I will not let you live just because you sit quietly like good little humans. I only need one of you alive to draw this Inuyasha in. I will not hesitate to kill the other. If you both wish to make it out of this alive then you will entertain me while you are in my care.” In truth he’d kill them both as soon as Inuyasha was dead. But waiting and doing as Naraku asked had some merit. At his current power he might not be able to destroy the hanyou without the power of the jewel. Naraku assured him that the key was this female. This woman somehow gave him an inner-strength to fight. His first goal was to sever that bond, to make the hanyou feel betrayed. Easy enough, and he’d be entertained while doing so. “Bring them, they reek of illness.”
Kagome felt herself being jerked up to stand on her feet. One of the demons thought it amusing to dig his fingers into her upper arm. “You don’t have to be so rough.” she was tempted to spit blood at the offensive creature. Their capture gave her a hard stare and she shut her mouth. She wanted to keep her teeth. The wall opened up to allow them through. She almost stumbled as they entered a very large room filled with all manner of demons. Just who the hell was this guy? She didn’t have time to memorize her surroundings. Her body felt heavy as they were pulled down a long hall to the right. The place was huge with so many people running around. The one holding her picked her up and placed her on his shoulder as she started to drag behind.
Creaking signaled her entrance into another room. This one appeared to be a bathing room, a round tub sat in the middle next to a table full of supplies. Her feet were harshly placed on the floor. Several women came quick to undress her. When they couldn’t figure out how to get the shirt off, a knife was brought in. A cruel hand wrapped around the back of her throat keeping her immobile. Now she knew how a cat felt being held immobile by the scruff. She was mortified to hear Miroku’s startled grasp. He was standing to the side with his capture. He could see her naked! She tried to place her hands over her private areas.
“Move bitch, you need to be cleaned.” The guard shoved her to step into the large tub. The women went to work at once dousing her with buckets of water. She wiped her face, clearing the water from her eyes. “Owe,” they were tugging on her and scrubbing her skin with some type of harsh scrubby. Her skin was being peeled off with the rough treatment. “Okay, I think I’m clean already.” Cheeks turned beet red as a hand went between her legs to scrub her most intimate spot. The servant was being slightly more gentle there as she was thoroughly cleaned.
Miroku tried to avert his eyes as they went to washing the miko. This wasn’t the time or place to ogle the nice form. He knew it was his turn as Kagome was made to step out and fresh water was brought in. They just started cutting away at his robe. In seconds he was just as nude as the miko. The water was extremely cold and made him shiver. He frowned feeling hands touching his equipment in personal manner. The ugly demon woman smiled at him with a mouth filled with sharp teeth. He felt his cock try to withdraw into his groin.
Kagome blushed seeing the houshi naked but she couldn’t avert her head with the fingers keeping her still. All she could do was close her eyes and she was loath to do that. She wanted to see whatever was taking place around her. She did look off to the right and tried not to focus on the naked body. At least the women had just cleaned her. She could make out how several of them were having roaming hands as they washed. One even went as far as grabbing his package. The hand wrapped around the hanging meat causing Miroku to jerk back. The woman could have at least waited until he popped the question. A towel was used to dry them both off. The oldest looking woman spoke in a language she didn’t understand. She groaned when a door that hadn’t been there before opened. She had a feeling she didn’t want to walk into the next room.
“What the hell do you mean they’re gone?” Inuyasha didn’t care that the elderly man flinched at the tone of his voice. They had to be fucking pulling his leg. Where the hell would Kagome and Miroku run off to? It’d only taken them about two hours of searching before finding the creature responsible for the condition of the village. Only to come back and find that they’d hauled ass on them? “What did they say?”
“Well the miko and houshi left to get some herbs to help ease their pain. While they were gone the villagers started feeling better. Minutes later the young girl came back to speak to me. I informed her that it had been lifted. With that I thanked her for her help. I offered to allow them to stay and rest for the night. Instead she told me that she and the houshi would go look for the rest of her companions. I assume it meant they were going to join up with you. She bid me farewell and departed with the houshi at her side”
“What the hell were they thinking?” Inuyasha grumbled. Why the fuck hadn’t they stayed at the village? Now he had to waste time tracking them down. Dark had already fallen outside. Something didn’t seem right here. “Feh, fine then. We’ll be going.” He was going to track them down and if they were fine they both were going to get an earful about going of. Even if the place still reeked of vomit and shit, they could have been patient.
“Don’t get too upset Inuyasha.” Sango petted Kirara as she stepped outside. “They probably just wanted to get away from the scent. After spending hours in it they wanted some fresh air. Plus, they both know that we’ll catch up to them as soon as possible. I suggest we head out and catch up to them before it gets any darker. They probably made camp somewhere nearby. Can’t blame them for wanting to leave now that the villagers were going to be okay. You know how it affected you, imagine poor Shippou. They probably left to get him away from here. I’m sure all three are sitting around a fire waiting for us.”
Kagome grumbled as the woman latched the clasp around her ankle. That wasn’t fair, she was being chained down by a single five foot length of metal. Miroku remained silent as he was told to sit on the edge of the bedding and wait. There was only one chain near the bedding also. How come she got tied? Were they going to get any clean clothes? The two guards left only after the women departed leaving them alone in a room that looked like a normal bed chamber. As soon as she was alone she voiced her opinion. “Why the hell do I get chained and you don’t?”
“Probably because they know that I am not strong enough to free you. Because of that we are both stuck here. The barrier is still up but they aren’t going to risk the chance of us trying to flee. If it were me chained I would tell you to leave me here. Perhaps they know that with you chained that I will not try to leave without you.” Miroku kept his eyes forward and away from the nakedness of the miko. He wouldn’t ogle her goods. Instead he looked around to see what there could be used as a weapon. Nothing but the bedding, a chamber pot, a table and a very tiny window outfitted the tiny bedroom. “Are you okay? That blow looked painful.”
“Eat shit, he knocked my teeth out. I’m missing two of them now.” She jerked at the annoying weight on her ankle. Like she’d leave Miroku here to rot without her. Showed what the fucker thought of a female’s honor. The hole opened in the wall and a servant came in carrying a tray. Her mouth began to water at the sweet aroma of bread. She was a true prisoner, bread and water for dinner. It was eyed with disdain after the woman left. “Think it’s safe?”
“Probably, he could easily kill us if that were his intentions. We have to be fed to be kept alive.” Miroku went for the pitcher and looked inside. Appeared to be normal water. He lifted it to his mouth and took a swallow. Nothing happened as it slid down his throat. “It’s fine, here drink some. You might want to wash out your mouth. Might do you some good to eat as well. We need to try not to worry. We’ve been in worse situations. Inuyasha will come for us, we know this. Let’s focus on that for now and try to stay alive.”
